Safety Razors Last a Lifetime – Buy it Once
Safety Razors are a buy-it-for-life product and once you find the perfect one, you’ll never want to go back to gimmicky shave clubs and subscription services again.
How many shaves can you get from a safety razor blade?
To give you a ball park estimate, most safety razor blades last around 5 shaves (plus or minus). However, while you might want to enjoy the cost savings of classic wet shaving, don’t sacrifice a superior shave! It is always better to change your razor blade before you need to, rather than after a bad shave.
How many times can you reuse a safety razor blade?
On average, a man shaving daily should expect his razor blade to last around a week. This means that a razor blade will need changing after about 6 shaves if you shave using the three-pass technique (with the grain, across and against). Most people change their blade somewhere between 1 and 7 shaves.
Can you sharpen safety razor blades?
The act of sharpening a safety razor can make it last for many more shaves than it might have otherwise. That said a safety razor blade doesn’t technically there is no such thing as safety razor sharpener. Safety razors obtain sharpness when they get polished — or in shaving terms, “stropped.”
Can you shave with a safety razor everyday?
The short answer to “can you shave every day with a safety razor” is yes. It all boils down to the quality of the razor. If a razor can give you a quality shave it can give you a quality shave every single day. It doesn’t matter what your shaving schedule is.
Is a safety razor worth it?
2. A safety razor helps prevent razor burn. Shaving with a sharp clean double edge blade is much less likely to clog with beard hair, shave cream and bacteria — the ingredients of mild skin irritation and razor burn. Rinse the safety razor blade regularly during the shave to ensure a clean, smooth outcome.
Can you flip safety razor blade?
Flipping the blade on your safety razor is a common trick that supposedly helps extend the life of your razor blade while providing a closer, cleaner shave.
Is shaving with a safety razor worth it?
Safety Razors Give You a Better Shave:
Shaving with a safety razor reduces skin irritation, shave bumps, and ingrown hairs that are common with cartridge or electric razors. The main reason is that with a safety razor you only have one blade against your skin at any time.
Can I use shaving cream with a safety razor?
A gel can be a little thick for use with a safety razor, while foams often don’t provide as much lubrication and protection against irritation. The light lather from a shaving soap is the traditional companion for the safety razor. However, we love using a shaving cream with a safety razor.
How long should a 5 blade razor last?
Ideally, you want to change your razor blade after 5-10 shaves. Gillette actually recommends 5-7 shaves, but this is just a general rule and it actually comes down more to the thickness and density of your facial hair.
How do I know if my razor is dull?
You will know that your razor is too dull if it pulls at your facial hair or feels rougher than usual. You may also get bleeding nicks and bumps on more sensitive areas of the face like your neck. If the blade doesn’t feel smooth or starts cutting against your skin, then it’s time to either sharpen or replace it.
How do you maintain a safety razor?
It can be as simple as a thorough rinse with warm water and wiping clean with a dry towel. That will keep surface lather residue off the razor and inhibit mineral build-up from the water. If you want to get a bit more serious about it, be sure to rinse and wipe the inside of the razor head when you change blades.
Is a straight razor better than a safety razor?
The most significant difference between safety and straight razors is the effort they require. Safety razors win handily in the convenience and time category; the angle is easy to set, you’ll learn to use them quickly, there’s little to no maintenance needed, and when the blade dulls, just swap it for a new one!
Do safety razors give a better shave?
Safety Razors Give You a Better Shave:
Shaving with a safety razor reduces skin irritation, shave bumps, and ingrown hairs that are common with cartridge or electric razors. The main reason is that with a safety razor you only have one blade against your skin at any time.
How do you know when a razor blade is dull?
The best indicator it’s time for a new blade is dullness. If your razor blade pulls at your hair, feels rough on your skin or you notice more skin irritation than normal post-shave, it’s time to replace it.
Is a safety razor really better?
Rather than having 5 razors dragging over your skin, safety razors only use a single sharp blade. This provides a much smoother shave while reducing your odds of razor burn or bumps. Particularly if you have sensitive skin or are prone to shaving irritations, it might be worth switching to a safety razor.
What happens if you don’t change your razor blade?
Your Razor Gets Covered In Grime
The longer you hold on to your old razor, the more bacteria, dead skin cells, shaving cream, and hair crops up in there. That goes double if you’re also not rinsing well in between strokes.

Safety Razor Shaving – A Guide On Why And How To Shave With A Safety Razor
Safety Razor Shaving – A Guide On Why And How To Shave With A Safety Razor
Until recently, traditional shaving techniques such as shaving with a safety razor or a straight razor had become a dying art. In the years before the mid 1960s, the fine tradition of double-edged safety razor shaving was passed down to each generation proudly by their fathers before them as a rite of passage to manhood.
Nowadays due to intelligent marketing campaigns and an influx of advertising, sadly many men are only accustomed to the cheap disposable shaving products, so the practice of safety razor shaving had decreased. These new and ‘innovative’ shaving products, despite speeding up the shaving process and adding more convenience to the equation, are now responsible for an increasing number of skin ailments. Electric razors and the latest multiple blade contraptions of today irritate the skin more than is ever needed, leaving ingrown hairs, razor bumps, razor burn and skin redness in their wake. Thankfully the male ritual of shaving with a safety razor has made a glorious comeback with men of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds.
Up to date, smart looking safety razors like the one in the image the uber cool, the German made Muhle R106 is a huge seller worldwide. It gives a close, comfortable shave time after time.
The Benefits of Shaving with a Safety Razor
The are a huge number of benefits to safety razor shaving and an even bigger number of reasons for picking up this skilled and traditional way of shaving.
Safety Razor Shaving Reduces Cost
Although admittedly a safety razor will sometimes cost more than one of its five bladed modern counter parts, in the long run a safety razor will prove itself to be a cheaper financial alternative. This is down to the pricing strategy of today’s shaving companies. Here the strategy employed today is to provide a razor at a cheap, affordable and even loss leading cost and then charge an excess on the shaving blades used.
Today, a pack of four Gillette Fusion Blades can set you back as much as £13.00 for some razors and will last just under a month, whereas ten safety razor blades cost from £3.50 for 10. On that basis it’s not hard to see how safety razor shaving will certainly benefit your pocket in the long run.
Safety Razor Shaving Benefits The Environment
This is due to the fact you’ll use three times less razor cartridges by using a safety razor, there’ll be less waste for you to dispose of. Secondly, due to the fact safety razor blades are made of a single metal razor blade, they can be easily recycled unlike today’s modern razor cartridges that are a mixture of plastic and metal.
Safety Razor Shaving Provides Better More Consistent Shaves
Today’s modern razors and electric shavers are no match for a double-edged safety razor. This is due to the very design of modern cartridge razors. Here the blades in a multi blade cartridge are each positioned to gradually extend toward your beard unlike a safety razor. These cartridges achieve their closeness by stretching the skin with a layer of rubberised ‘microfins’, then by lifting the hair and slicing it off at a point slightly below the surface of the skin. It is this overzealous closeness that causes many of today’s skin and shaving problems as when shaved too closely, cut hair can grow painfully into the upper layers of the epidermis. Once the hair follicles begin to do this, there is a high chance of causing ingrown hairs, razor bumps and razor burn. These problems are severely reduced and even removed all together by shaving with a good quality safety razor. This will provide better more consistent shaves and will leave your skin in excellent condition every time as a safety razor cut hairs directly at the skins surface.
How to Shave With A Safety Razor
You can watch our How To Shave with a Safety Razor video tutorial. In this video Brain demonstrates how to achieve a smooth shave with a safety razor.
You can follow these steps below to achieve a close, comfortable shave with safety razor:
1. Firstly wash the face with hot water or a apply a warm towel. Alternatively many people recommend shaving straight after coming out of the shower. Both these methods work well and will help open the skin and hair pores allowing for a closer, more comfortable shave.
2. After this has been done, apply a generous amount of pre-shave oil or pre-shave soap or gel to the area you wish to shave. Using a good quality pre-shave treatment will help reduce the friction between the safety razor and the skin, helping it to glide more effectively allowing for a closer shave, whilst protecting the skin at all times.
3. Next, ensure that you have a fresh razor blade in your safety razor. Most safety razor blades can last for 5-7 close, comfortable, tug-free shaves, due to their sharpness and the fact you can use both sides of a safety razor. Ensure that you change the blade at least weekly to guarantee a close, gentle shaving experience.
4. Next ensure that you have put a generous amount of shaving cream or shaving soap on to your face. It is best to do this with a synthetic shaving brush as these types of brushes have an extremely high water retention capability and can create an all round well formed shaving lather quickly and easily. Ensure that whilst applying shaving cream you lather the face in a circular motion, this ensures that you lubricate the skin properly and get under beard stubble.
5. The single biggest mistake committed by those new to safety razor shaving is to apply too much pressure with the razor. Whilst this isn’t a problem for cartridge razors, this can be very painful with a safety razor. A good quality safety razor will have been developed and designed to have an even weight distribution to allow for a balanced shave, this means that very little pressure is needed. Most nicks and cuts occur at the beginning of a safety razor shave, to prevent this allow the safety razor bar to contact the skin first and then lift the razor to the desired angle, then begin your forward motion.
6. Next and still applying very little added pressure, hold the safety razor loosely in your hand and allow it to glide across the skins surface without pressing it into the skin when shaving. Throughout the shave strive to maintain a thirty degree blade angle relative to the skin. Whilst this maybe difficult to keep up round the more difficult areas of the face, such as: ear lobes, nose and chin, it is still the optimum angle at which to safety razor shave and you’ll see and feel the results. Next, hold the razor firmly and direct it where you want it to go. Beard bristles must be tackled using short strokes of 25-30 mm at a time, whilst finer hair can be removed using slightly longer sweeping strokes.
7. After shaving, wash the shaved area thoroughly with warm water to remove all traces of shaving cream. Then splash the face with cold water to close the pores, finally apply a
light moisturiser or skin food on the skin. This is needed as the protective layers of the skin and nourishing minerals are removed during the shaving process, using a premium quality moisturiser or skin food will help the skin retain more of its moisture and allow it to regenerate faster.
8. Finally remember to take your time whilst shaving with a safety razor.
Follow these guidelines on how to shave with a safety razor and you’ll soon pick up the habits and the skills you’ll need to pull of an effortless shave. Remember, you must still remember to take your time as careful diligence will always result in a comfortable, smooth yet close shave.

Answering Shaving FAQs – How Long do Safety Razor Blades Last?
As one of the men who are using safety razor blades every day, you might be wondering, “How long do they last?” or “How long can I use them until they go bad?”
It can be quite difficult to tell exactly when you should change your safety razor blades. While they may be much easier to use and far more effective than disposable or cartridge razors, but safety razors blades can be quite tricky when it comes to replacement periods.
If you suspect that your safety razor blades are due for a replacement but aren’t exactly sure about it, here’s a quick guide on everything you need to know:
On the topic of duration
Generally speaking, any safety razor that is used almost daily will need to have its blades replaced after a week or after six shaves. That is assuming that it’s being used with a “three-pass” technique.
Razor blades lose their sharpness after an extended period of usage. That essentially leads to a dull blade that doesn’t shave as well as it should. When it’s not sharp enough, the chances are that you’ll end up with nicks and cuts because of rough shaving patterns from applying too much pressure when using the razor.
Aside from nicks and cuts, a dull blade can also lead to a few ingrown hair-related problems as it will have a tendency to tug slightly before shaving the hair off and cause a persistent irritation on the skin.
Factors that affect the longevity of a razor blade
Other than the frequency of use, there are several other factors that can affect a safety razor blade’s longevity. Here are some of them:
Your facial hair
Both the thickness and coarseness of your facial hair will greatly affect the lifespan of a safety razor blade because of the amount of work needed to shave them off. If you have coarse and thick facial hair, then you’ll need to replace your blade more often. On the other hand, if you have fine and fairly-thin facial hair, then you can probably use a safety razor blade longer than usual.
The rate at which your facial hair grows
Speaking of work, the amount of effort your safety razor blades need to put in also depends on the speed of your facial hair’s growth. For example, if you’re the type to have a pretty awkward five o’clock shadow every day right after a shave, then you’ll need to replace your razor blades often.
The quality of the razor blade
Another important factor to consider when dealing with the longevity of a safety razor blade is the blade itself. It may not seem like it at first, but every blade option on the market is made slightly different from each other in terms of the material used, the grinding used in the manufacturing process, and the coating that’s applied on the razor. Each type of razor has its own special application where it can last much longer, so make sure that you’re getting one that best fits your needs.
Frequently changing your safety razor blades is not only a necessity, but it’s in your best interest as well. If you’re in need of high-quality safety razor blades that get the job done extremely well with every shave, then head over to Cut Throat Club and check out our wide range of options.
How Safety Razors Save You Money
1. Safety Razors Last a Lifetime – Buy it Once
There’s a reason the classic razor your grandfather used to use is still around today. Safety razors are made much more durable than the plastic disposable cartridge razors we have replaced them with. Metal bodies allow safety razors to stand the test of time and make these razors fully recyclable (Yay for less plastic pollution)!
Safety Razors are a buy-it-for-life product and once you find the perfect one, you’ll never want to go back to gimmicky shave clubs and subscription services again.
2. Rockwell Razors Have a Lifetime Warranty
While safety razors are built to last, sometimes things happen and parts get damaged due to wear and tear. When you purchase a Rockwell-razor, you are backed by a lifetime guarantee policy because we believe this should be the best and last razor you need to purchase. That means any manufacturer defeats, damages, accidental damage, and replacements are covered. For more information check out our quality guarantee page.
The upfront cost of a safety razor may be more than a disposable one, but imagine this cost over a lifetime. If you spend $150.00 on a Rockwell Safety Razor that will be used three times a week, it will pay for itself in 1 year. When you purchase items such as disposable razors that will be thrown out regularly, you are throwing away money and contributing to waste production.
3. Replacement Blades Cost Less than 10 Cents
I think we can agree that purchasing expensive cartridge blades feels like throwing away your money because let’s face it, you kind of are. You already paid for the initial cost of your razor, and now the blades are just as expensive (if not more).
Big-name razor companies purposely design inexpensive handles that are only compatible with expensive cartridge blades. Once you get sucked into the cycle of purchasing the replacements you may end up spending 5X the cost of double edge blades in a year.
Ten cents is the average cost of one double edge razor blade, you read that right. Buying a year’s worth of blades will cost you less than one meal at most restaurants.
4. You Aren’t Paying for All the Bells & Whistles
With shave subscriptions and fancy disposable razors, you’re paying for extra fluff you don’t need. It would be worth it if the numerical blades correlated with the quality of shave, but this isn’t the case. Dermatologists have explained that more blades on razors can lead to an increase of ingrown hairs, razor burns, and other skin irritations. Switching to a safety razor will give you the cleanest shave of your life, we promise.
5. One Razor Can Do It All
The biggest concern customers have is whether a safety razor will work for them. Unlike traditional safety razors, Rockwell razors can adjust to meet the needs of any shave. With adjustable plates in our 6S + 6C and fully adjustable setting built into our patented Model T design, any shave is possible. This eliminates the need for multiple razors or expensive cartridge blades.
Maybe your skin is really sensitive and prone to razor bumps so you need a sensitive setting, or you’re looking for a more aggressive clean shave, either of these is possible with the same razor and blade. We have a whole breakdown of how to easily adjust our Rockwell razors on our site and a comparison guide when choosing your Rockwell Safety Razor.
Still not convinced a safety razor will save you money?
