Dior Sauvage (EDT) Full Review In 2022
Dior Sauvage Full Review in 2022 – Still on Top?
Dior Sauvage is definitely the fragrance that left the mark in the industry and it most certainly remains one of the best sellers today.
Johnny Depp in the desert being… Well, Johnny Depp – playing guitar in the desert while Native American is dancing… Even though the campaign was pulled due to appropriation of Native culture, that’s the impression house Dior wanted you to have – a fragrance that is one with Earth, soul, and nature, but still very modern.
Francois Demachy from the house of Christian Dior is a mastermind who created Dior Sauvage Eau De Toilette in 2015 and it skyrocketed, becoming the best-selling fragrance ever since.

In this article, we’re going to review Dior Sauvage as best as we can so you can get the complete picture of the fragrance before deciding is it for you.
What Does Dior Sauvage Smell Like?
Straight out of the bottle, Dior Sauvage smells like a fresh, adventurous, spicy, classic man fragrance, but at the same time, it’s not something you didn’t smell before, so don’t expect much in terms of uniqueness.
It does smell like a manly, wild, and sexy fragrance, but a lot of people get reminded of Bleu De Chanel, Versace Dylan Blue, and Prada Lunna Rosa Carbon.
However, Sauvage has its own uniqueness – it’s similar to others, but if you’re to be blindfolded and you get to smell these ones, you would easily figure out which one is Sauvage.
If you can imagine classic men’s fragrance with a tiny bit of wilderness in it, that’s what Dior Sauvage smells like.
Notes used in the creation of this fragrance are commonly seen in men’s fragrances but a different blend in them gives Sauvage a recognizable scent. Those would be (1):
Top notes:
Pepper
Calabrian Bergamot
Heart notes:
Geranium
Lavander
Vetiver
Patchouli
Sichuan pepper
Pink pepper
Elemi
Base notes:
Labdanum
Cedar
Ambroxan
When you spray it you can immediately smell the pepper. It’s so strong, that I have a feeling that molecules of the pepper are just buzzing through the air in all directions like they are radioactive!
You can smell a little bit of bergamot, but there is no real bergamot in the notes — it’s aroma chemical manipulated to smell like bergamot.
That is perfectly fine since fragrance houses often use these because they are cheaper and can make the fragrance more affordable. Also, aroma chemicals are used when perfumers need a certain note to have different performances – in this case, real bergamot is a more soft citrusy note that’s not going to give you that smash through the air that the perfumer wants you to feel, so they replaced real bergamot with aroma chemical.
As it dries down, it becomes drier, where you start to feel pepper combined with lavender, but these notes were combined so well that you start smelling that there’s something sweet from the background combined with other notes even though in reality these notes are not sweet.
Right after the heart of the fragrances reaches its peak and starts slowly declining towards the base, Sauvage becomes dry, still pepper dominant, woody (with a bit of tobacco note I’d say) compliment getter that’s gonna last for hours on your skin.
In my personal opinion, Dior Sauvage is too universal and too safe, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a beautiful smelling fragrance. There are no notes except the pepper that will be too obvious, they are all a bit blurred and merged together, which makes it a true manly, sexy, men classic
Altogether, if you are not a fragrance freak like me, I bet Sauvage will blow your mind!

How Long Does Dior Sauvage Last?
Dior Sauvage lasts for 10-12 hours, being ultra-potent and projecting for the first 4-6 hours, depending on your skin.
Sillage is also ultra-strong, and the scent will definitely stay in the air after you.
It’s an absolute beast in terms of longevity and it also has loads of projection, projection even 4-5 feet around you constantly. If you want everyone to smell your presence when you walk into the room, then you will make no mistake doing it with Dior Sauvage.
Longevity always played a huge role in making this fragrance best seller and it’s definitely one of the reasons why so many people like it. Saying that I’m pretty sure that Dior house won’t take anything away from Sauvage’s longevity in the future.
UPDATE (May 2022): There have been many reports that the Dior Sauvage batch from the end of 2021 and 2022 does not meet this standard of longevity and that it lasts for 6-7 hours. Personally, I still didn’t have the chance to test it, but I plan on within the next couple of weeks, after which I’ll update this section properly. Regardless of the rumors, rest assured that Dior Sauvage is still considered to be a long-lasting fragrance. If you’re experiencing a couple of hours of longevity, try following some of our tips on how to make the fragrance last longer.
When to Wear Dior Sauvage?
Dior Sauvage is a very universal fragrance, so saying that you can wear it during the day or at night when going out. It works beautifully on hot summer days, but also it keeps its performance in the cold wintertime.
Most people said they love to wear it in the office, but don’t limit it to be just the office fragrance – Dior Sauvage will fit perfectly if you have a date with someone you want to impress.
There’s really no rule here when it comes to this amazing fragrance. It fits perfectly in every event and it will most definitely leave awesome first impressions.
How Many Sprays of Dior Sauvage is Enough?
I’ve tested hundreds of options, from almost bathing in it, to having just one spray, and the result is pretty much what I expected.
Dior Sauvage is a very potent perfume, so 2-4 sprays should work just fine for you and should be enough. Get 2 on the sides of the neck, and if you want it to keep the smell longer on you, spray 2 more times on your chest or shoulder. Fragrances always linger more on your clothes than on your skin.
If you want to go below 2, then just spray it once right under your chin and it will work like magic again. However, if you think that 2-4 sprays are not enough, feel free to spray it a few more times wherever you need it.
Just make sure you don’t apply over 3 sprays on the same spot as that will make it harder for the fragrance to open up and dry down to the base notes.
You can also check out our ultimate guide on how to apply perfume properly for the best performance!
Should I Wear Dior Sauvage? Is It For Me?
If you are a man who has no problem with people knowing you entered the room before they saw you, and if you are a man who loves expressing his masculinity then yes, Dior Sauvage EDT is definitely for you.
Of course, not only do those two rules define if the Sauvage is the right fragrance for you.
You must have in mind that this fragrance is a top seller since 2015 when it was created and that a lot of men out there have it, so there’s a good chance that people around will recognize it and might comment something like “Oh, you smell like my brother/boyfriend/ex/friend, etc.“. So if you are okay with smelling like lots of men out there, then go ahead, but if you’re more into smelling unique, then Sauvage might not be the best choice for you.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Sauvage is mostly not for folks who don’t like interaction with people and getting a lot of attention. I’m saying that because Sauvage will do just that – it will let everyone know that you smell good, it will spike interest in people to approach you and ask you about your smell and most certainly it will get your attention.
So altogether, if you like the fresh, sexy, and manly fragrance but you also want it to be pretty safe which will make sure that most people like it, then yes, Dior Sauvage is a great choice for that.
It’s no secret that women adore Dior Sauvage. There were a lot of social experiments where guys would get thoughts of girls they never met before, and 8/10 of women always say that Sauvage is definitely one of the best fragrances they ever smelled.
But is Dior Sauvage unisex? Can a woman wear it?
The house of Christian Dior declared Sauvage to be men’s fragrances, not unisex. However, it’s known that many women prefer wearing men’s fragrances, so if you are a woman who seeks masculine perfume, Dior Sauvage can serve that purpose.
What’s The Difference Between Dior Sauvage EDT, EDP, Parfum, and Elixir?
In 2015 Dior released Sauvage which was EDT, meaning it had 10-20% of etheric oil and 80-90% of alcohol. 3 years later they released Eau De Parfum (EDP) version which also turned out to be an amazing fragrance, but nowhere near close to EDT. Year after that, in 2019, Dior released Sauvage Parfum, which I believe was a total miss.
The difference between Sauvage EDT, EDP, and Parfum is pretty big which changes the complete story about the fragrance.
In short, the main differences are that Dior Sauvage EDT, EDP, and Parfum don’t have the same notes, they don’t have the same performance, the price is different for all 3 of them, and some people who like EDT won’t like other versions and opposites. Those differences are big which changes the story entirely about the fragrance as they don’t smell or perform the same.
We have a complete article of all in-depth differences between EDT, EDP, and Parfum that you can check out here!
UPDATE: At the beginning of September 2021, Dior announced Sauvage Elixir. According to the reviews and my own personal sniff or two, Elixir is more concentrated and it has original Sauvage DNA, but it’s far different from the other three options. It’s made for heavy winter and fall days and works perfectly with cold temperatures. We’ll get into more details about it in a separate review!
Where To Buy Dior Sauvage
The best places to buy Dior Sauvage are local perfumeries who are the authorized reseller of Dior fragrances, or if you’re buying online then the best places are Amazon, FragranceNet, FragranceX, and Dior’s official website.
It’s always smartest to buy fragrances in physical stores — perfumeries who the authorized reseller of the brand, because that way you get the benefit of trying out the fragrance first and then decide should you buy it.
Doing a blind buy on Dior Sauvage probably won’t go wrong, but still, if you have the chance to visit the physical store, that’s what you should do.
On the other hand, if you’re pretty certain about this buy, or you just want to refill, I would personally recommend getting your bottle from Amazon or FragranceNet.
Prices may vary between Amazon and FragranceNet but so does the shipping.
Besides other trustworthy sources for buying perfumes online, an alternative for buying Sauvage is Dior’s official website.
Whichever source out of these you pick, rest assured that you will get an original bottle, without needing to worry about scams and fake versions.
Always be super careful when buying fragrances online, and use trusted sources like the ones mentioned above. Fake fragrances are not dermatologically tested and can cause serious health problems.
Packaging and sizes
Dior Sauvage comes in a beautifully designed blue bottle that becomes more and more transparent towards the bottom. It has a heavy magnetic cap which gives it that premium feeling in the hands.
© Image credit and owner: Fourth Sense
It’s produced in 3 different sizes:
2 oz / 60 ml
3.4 oz / 100 ml
6.7 oz / 200 ml
Like most of the folks, I started with a 60 ml bottle, but after that went out pretty fast, I have a 200ml bottle of this beautiful manly beast in my collection, which I’d advise you to get as well!
Summary
Dior Sauvage won the hearts of many people out there ever since 2015, which made it one of the best-selling fragrances in the world. Women love the sexy scent it gives and men love it because it smells like confidence!
A very complex mix of notes was the masterpiece of Francois Demachy who managed to blend it all together and give the pepper advantage. He said that he “used man as his starting point. A strong and unmistakable masculinity.” so if you identify yourself as the one, then this fragrance is definitely for you!
You can wear it any time you like, as it will fit perfectly day or night, spring or fall, summer or winter.
It remains the game-changer in men’s fragrances and I look forward to you trying it on yourself!
Eau De Parfum VS Eau De Toilette
We all have our favourite fragrances but we oh so often hear the same question – what is the difference between eau de toilette and eau de parfum?
As these are the two most common types of fragrances available, it makes sense to compare them.
The Difference Between Eau De Toilette And Eau De Parfum
The answer is simply the concentration of the perfume or aftershave.
Think of this blog post as a little guide to buying your next fragrance, be it EDT or EDP.
EDT & EDP Concentrations
So, what does ‘concentration’ mean? It is the strength of the perfume. The higher the concentration, the stronger and longer lasting a perfume is.
More perfume oils are used (and less alcohol) in stronger concentrations like EDP.
Generally speaking, an eau de toilette (EDT) has a lower concentration than an eau de parfum (EDP).
The concentration of an EDT is normally between 8% and 12%. In an EDP, it is higher and normally between 12% and 18%.
Eau De Parfum VS Eau De Toilette
Now, let’s dive into the differences in more detail:
Eau De Toilette (EDT)
An EDT is often the cheaper option (many perfumes are available in both EDT & EDP) making them more affordable.
This is because the concentration is weaker (between 8% and 12%) than that of an EDP.
Because of this, most people associate an eau de toilette as a daytime fragrance – something you can wear to work or a spot of lunch.
You can expect the fragrance to linger for around 3 hours if you choose an EDT.
Eau De Parfum (EDP)
The longer lasting of the two options, an EDP is also the more expensive option.
The concentration is generally between 12% and 18% which also helps the fragrance to last longer – you can expect the longevity to be around 5 hours.
An EDP can be classed as a nighttime fragrance due to how long it lasts – think a date night or even a night on the town.
Do you have sensitive skin? If so, an EDP will be better for your skin due to the lower concentration of alcohol.
Remember, with an EDP you can use less sprays as the concentration of perfume oils is higher.
Does An EDT Smell The Same As An EDP?
Let’s take Dior Sauvage as an example. So you have:
Dior Sauvage Eau De Toilette
And you have Dior Sauvage Eau De Parfum.
Both of these aftershaves are the same – but the concentration is different.
One is the eau de toilette so is cheaper but also weaker than the other.
One is the eau de parfum so is more expensive but also stronger than the other.
But – do they smell the same? In theory, they should smell the same. In reality, they smell almost the same.
For example:
Someone walks past you wearing the EDT version of Dior Sauvage. 10 minutes later, someone walks by you wearing the EDP version of the same fragrance.
More than likely, you’ll recognise both as the same fragrance because they are extremely similar.
It’s only if you smell them at the same time that you pick up on the ever so slight differences – certain notes may be a little sweeter for instance. But you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference in an everyday situation.
Will My Fragrances Expire?
Most fragrances tend to have a shelf life of between 3 and 5 years.
If you’re like myself and get hooked on a fragrance, you’ll fall very short of the 3 year mark!
However, if you’re only an occasional user or have that certain fragrance for special occasions you may want to grab the EDT version.
The reason being is because eau de toilettes contain more alcohol which acts as a preservative of the fragrance.
Where as a an EDP contains less alcohol meaning it ages just that bit quicker.
If you really want to keep your fragrances smelling their best for as long as possible, think about how you store it.
We recommend keeping it in the original bottle and packaging for its lifetime. Also, a dark cupboard and consistent temperatures (room temperature if perfect) will really make a difference.
Will An Eau De Parfum Last Longer Than An Eau De Toilette?
In short, yes. An EDP will last longer on the skin than an EDT.
But we should say this in regards to you choosing the same fragrance. You can’t compare an EDP and an EDT if one is a woody fragrance and the other floral.
The notes in each are completely different – for example, fruity notes tend to die down much quicker even when the concentrations are higher.
We recommend trying a fragrance on your own skin before committing to purchasing a full bottle. Your skin is different to everybody else’s and the way a fragrance smells on you may not be the same as the next person.
Hint: our fragrance samples are perfect for trying a fragrance before purchasing a big bottle.

Opening
The opening of the EDT features a fairly sharp bergamot note that is joined by the spicy Sichuan pepper and calming lavender. It’s pretty intense to my nose, not that pleasant from the jump, but it does calm down and get smoother as it moves forward.
It’s just the way that the citrus juiciness interacts with the spicy warmth of the pepper, I find it to be somewhat bothersome. Not terrible, but the eau de toilette original, never fully won me over to its opening charm.
I think that the eau de toilette, really starts to shine once the pepper fades a bit, and the lavender/ambroxan combo get into full swing. With those notes flanking it, the citrus smells better, as well.
It becomes balanced, instead of ‘in your face’.
Sauvage EDP, starts off with the ambroxan note that has become a distinct ingredient in both of these scents. The ambroxan is warm and joined by a nice smoky vanilla and less lavender than the EDT version.
When it doesn’t have the same Sichuan pepper blast, I find the result to be much more pleasant and wearable. The nutmeg and anise, share some of the weight of that accord, and the end result is great.
Which do I prefer? The EDP, it doesn’t have the sharpness or spiciness of the original, and it’s just a better aroma for me. It is a simple change of the composition’s structure and the addition of the vanilla, but Dior did it perfectly and improved upon the original.
To me, the opening of the EDP is the perfect Sauvage blend to date, and I doubt, that they’ll be able to improve upon it.
Edge: EDP
Projection
Sauvage EDT has pretty strong sillage from the start and then settles into something more moderate. The EDP should have the ability to project itself better, since it has a higher concentration of fragrance, does it?
Yep, the EDP is a beast with its sillage. It doesn’t take much to create a warm cloud of fragrance around the wearer and it keeps going.
When testing it out, numerous times, the EDP really only needed a few sprays. Anything beyond that, can fill up a room, rather easily. The original can do the same, but only for a short while, before it turns moderate on my skin.
So, the EDT even when starting strong, never seems to reach the same heights as the eau de parfum.

Longevity. How long does Sauvage last?
With Sauvage EDT, it lasts about 6-7 hours on my skin when it is warm and the humidity is higher. When it’s colder, I can get about 8-9 hours of wear from it.
How long does Sauvage EDP last? It will go 10+ hours, without any worry that it’ll quit. Seriously, the enhanced concentration and newer composition structure, really boost the longevity of this name.
The Sauvage EDT, is pretty consistent in how it lasts. It’s definitely not a bad option, by any means, but doesn’t hit the same heights as the higher concentration eau de parfum.
I’ve never been able to get double digit hours of wear from the EDT, like some people apparently. This is a clear win for the EDP.

Versatility
There really isn’t a difference in how versatile either of these is. Both fragrances can fit well in a variety of situations from casual to more dressed up to club wear. They can also work in different climates without much issue.
Maybe, the original feels slightly better in warmer weather, as it isn’t as heavy. Though, it isn’t strictly a summer fragrance either, but it’s solid in the heat. That’s about it.
With the EDP, perhaps it works better in formal situations. Otherwise, it’s an even match.

Overall Scent
Overall, which fragrance is the better buy?
I always thought that the original Sauvage EDT was good but not great. It was something that I could wear from time to time, but it never really captured my interest for very long. It’s nice, it’s popular, and definitely has its uses but it wasn’t my favorite.
The more time that I spent with it, the less I enjoyed it. It still has nice aspects, isn’t a terrible fragrance by any means, but I don’t really like wearing it.
The EDP has given me a much greater appreciation for this name. Dior took what I didn’t like about the original (mainly the sharpness and spiciness and abundance of lavender) and then created this version, which is awesome.
It smells better, performs better, and is sexier than the EDT. The ambroxan and vanilla are great together and the spice is more varied and not as strong, as it had been.
The bergamot is a role player in the EDP, but it is much better suited, and adds a change of pace from the rest of the wear.
The EDP is powerful, clean, warm, and just a joy to wear. Without a doubt, I’d pick it over the EDT. Even with the release of the newer Parfum version, the EDP is still the best smelling cologne of the Dior Sauvage lineup.
