How Long Does It Take For Ho’oponopono To Work?

How long does it take for ho’oponopono to work? If by “work” we mean to demonstrate beneficial results, I believe ho’oponopono works as soon as the method is used. For those who may not be aware, ho’oponopono is performed through ongoing repetition of a mantra (there are various mantras used in ho’oponopono). This mantra repetition is believed to clear karmas — typically referred to in ho’oponopono as memories — that cause different life dysfunction.

Again, it is my belief that ho’oponopono demonstrates positive results as soon as it’s used. These immediate results are typically experiences similar to serenity and contentment. Over the long term, as memories get cleared through cleaning (mantra repetition) results can be perceived as a variety of positive life experiences — an improvement in health or financial circumstances, for instance.

The issue of results speaks to an important point within ho’oponopono, which is being free from expectations. In ho’oponopono the user is responsible for cleaning, and the results from the cleaning are left to Source (or however one wants to refer to this presence). This means ho’oponopono practitioners don’t concern themselves with how ho’oponopono is, or isn’t, working; they simply clean, and leave it at that.

This admonition of no expectations is often taken in one of two ways: it’s either seen as a relief because it frees from any responsibilities beyond cleaning; or it’s considered a cover for the ho’oponopono method not working to satisfaction — no expectations may be interpreted as a convenient excuse for disappointing results. So which is it really?

The answer is ultimately for the individual to decide. I am an advocate for the ho’oponopono method and do consider it to be an effective tool for life improvement. Ho’oponopono is not for everyone however: aside from being free of expectations using ho’oponopono involves ongoing mantra repetition — as close to all the time as is possible — and this may feel like too much work for some.

Having said that mantras are not unique to ho’oponopono and some people will find using them to be a simple alternative to the practices of other life improvement techniques. It really is a case of individual taste, which may explain why a variety of life improvement techniques exist in the first place: enough choice for everyone to find what best suits them.

In the case of ho’oponopono, is there a standard time frame whereby change, beyond initial serenity and contentment, shows up? I believe the answer to this question is no: there is no absolute time frame for life change to occur. But can any life help method guarantee an outcome within a particular time? I believe the answer to this question is also no. It would be preferable to many of us — or perhaps more accurately to our egos — if we could ensure a stop watch effect for change by using one method or another.

This, however, is not the way it works. I believe in the effectiveness of ho’oponopono, and other techniques as well, but the nature of all of them seems to be that results come when they do, and not before. If nothing else this gives us a chance to work on remaining in the present moment versus anticipating the future — this may also be part of the motivation for no expectations within ho’oponopono, to encourage staying present — as occupying the future often leads to dis-ease where being present, which is where Source is always found, usually brings peace.

A lack of a definitive time frame maintains as well the pleasant surprise when change finally does come, and this in turn provides the motivation and confidence to seek even more positive change.

Understanding Ho’oponopono: A Beautiful Hawaiian Teaching About Forgiveness

People who struggle with the concept of forgiveness– both for themselves and for others– often find comfort in a deeply healing age-old practice that comes from Hawai’i. The beautiful Hawaiian teaching for Forgiveness is called “Ho’oponopono” (pronounced HO-oh-Po-no-Po-no), and it’s lovely.

This ancient Hawaiian practice of forgiveness functions as both a communication concept for reconciliation and a tool for restoring self-love and balance.

In practice, it works sort of like a mantra for self-love. And, even more surprisingly, it’s super simple.

The word ho’oponopono roughly translates to “cause things to move back in balance” or to “make things right.” It’s a very zen concept. (In native Hawaiian language, “pono” means balance, in the sense of “life.” When things are in balance, nothing is off, so to speak.)

Accordingly, chanting this prayer over and over is a powerful way to cleanse the body of guilt, shame, haunting memories, ill will, or bad feelings that keep the mind fixated on negative thoughts.

As a forgiveness practice, it is also deeply resonant, as it tends to penetrate our inner monologue over time.

To try it out for yourself, follow along with the practice, below.

***

“I’m Sorry, Please forgive me, Thank you, I Love You”

To “cleanse” yourself of bad feelings, chant the following mantra repeatedly while sitting with your eyes closed, as a kind of meditation.

The ho’oponopono prayer goes like this:

“I’m sorry, Please forgive me, Thank you, I love you.”

That’s it. And isn’t that something we all need to hear? “I’m sorry, Please forgive me, Thank you, I love you.” It’s very touching, especially given how simple and universal these words are.

With regular practice, reciting these four simple phrases helps develop self-love and self-esteem at the times when we need it most. In this way, it’s both a lullaby to the self and a guaranteed insightful way to approach forgiving other people.

Part of the reason why this traditional Hawaiian forgiveness prayer is so powerful is that it first requires you to acknowledge that wrong was done by saying you’re sorry.

Having other people acknowledge our feelings is a universal need; in ho’oponopono, you must first acknowledge that wrongdoing exists, which is a way of acknowledging these feelings. Only then will it be possible to find it in your heart to forgive someone else, or yourself.

In the final step, you acknowledge love– both for yourself, and others.

Most people, when attempting to forgive either others or themselves, make the mistake of thinking that forgiveness = total absolution, or an erasing of the wrongdoing. This is ultimately futile because it ignores hurt feelings, which inevitably bubble back up later if they are not addressed.

Understanding True Forgiveness

On the contrary, true forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting. Instead, by first acknowledging the wrongdoing, ho’oponopono allows all parties to sit with and hold space for these feelings. First, we acknowledge that the problem exists. Then, when we are ready, we make the conscious choice to move on.

True forgiveness, moreover, requires both attention and intention. When done correctly, it is one of the most freeing sensations there is– like an invisible weight has been lifted.

Historically, the ho’oponopono prayer was a kind of shared reconciliation mantra for divided families, also known as Ohana.

In the modern era, it remains a highly effective mediation practice for forgiveness, both in helping people navigate hurt feelings and feelings of resentment towards others. It’s also felicitous in healing the self.

For people who carry a lot of guilt, it’s also an easy way to practice self-comfort when you’re feeling down.

Ho’oponopono for Self Forgiveness

To practice ho’oponopono, take a few deep breaths with your eyes closed. Then, slowly repeat these phrases to yourself about 7 or 8 times. (“I’m sorry, Please forgive me, Thank you, I love you… I’m sorry, Please forgive me, Thank you, I love you“— and so on.)

End with a few moments of silence to let the message resonate. Open your eyes. How do you feel?

***

There are also passive ways to experience this message. Some people play the ho’oponopono mantra over and over in the background while working or trying to fall asleep. This way, you get some good vibes by osmosis, which can be particularly helpful in cultivating more self-love and compassion.

^ If you are someone who is very hard on themself, this might be more moving than you anticipate.

Below, watch a YouTube video of Kumu Sabra Kauka, a Hawai’ian elder, historian, educator, and activist speaking about the Hawai’ian tradition of Ho’oponopono, and how it is applied.

“It is much bigger to forgive than to carry the burden of blame and to move on,” Kauka notes. “Because only by forgiving and moving on can you reach a higher point.”

Watch her short explanation, below.

Here’s some audio of the ho’oponopono recitation for deep healing and forgiveness:

Practicing Ho’oponopono in Four Simple Steps

There is a Hawaiian psychotherapist who cured an entire ward of criminally insane patients, without ever meeting any of them or spending any time with them. Sound crazy? It really happened! The therapist was Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len and instead of the typical process of reviewing each patients’ files, and then meeting with them in person, Dr Len focused on healing them by healing himself.

Sound like a miracle? It was, but one performed with conscious effort using the right tools. Dr Len used Ho’oponopono, what he calls Self IDentity Through Ho’oponopono (SITH).

I have been following his lectures for some time and started practicing Ho’oponopono immediately. I am now a certified Ho’oponopono practitioner. I can guarantee the results are nothing short of miraculous. Maybe you need a miracle, or just a way to become more effective as a healing practitioner?

You might be thinking; how can this possibly work? What does healing yourself have to do with healing anyone? The “New Age” ideas of creating your own reality, take on a whole new level of responsibility with Ho’oponopono. If you do subscribe to the belief that you do create your own reality then it is no secret that there is no such thing as “out there” – everything happening to you right now in every moment is happening in your own mind. Everything you see, everything you hear, every person you meet, is not “out there” its happening in our own mind and shaded with all of our perceptions, fears, beliefs about that experience.

Unfortunately, because of how the mind is designed, we want to think what is happening is outside of us. This takes away any responsibility for what is happening. In reality, it’s quite the opposite: we are responsible for everything we think, and everything that comes to our attention. If we watch the news, everything we hear is actually our responsibility. That might be a little difficult to accept at first, but the good news is that we are now able to clear it, clean it, and through forgiveness change what is happening in our reality.

The good news is that you can do this process yourself, without anyone to help you. All you have to do is “say” the words in your head. The power is in the feeling and in the natural order of how our “universe” is designed.

Let’s face it, our lives unfold base on how we think. The good news is that if we think the right thoughts then life unfolds accordingly. The bad news is that if we think the wrong thoughts then life unfolds accordingly. Controlling our thoughts is one of the most difficult things we can do, because the mind, left to its own devices is like a drunken monkey sometimes, randomly jumping from one thought to the next. One thought makes us happy, another makes us sad, another thought starts us worrying about something that only “might happen”. It is pretty crazy sometimes. Do you know what your next thought is going to be? Not usually, it just shows up.

The good news is that whenever you are having difficult thoughts that are non-productive and stressing you out, it is time to take control of your thoughts and focus on happier thoughts. The practice of Ho’oponopono will do just that and the good news is that you can do it in just four easy steps.

Step 1: Repentance – JUST SAY: I’M SORRY

The first step is to realize that you are responsible for everything in your mind, even if it seems to be “outside” of you. Once you accept that, it’s very natural to feel sorry. When I read about all the heartache and destruction in the world and take responsible for becoming aware of that reality in my consciousness, I am very sorry. This realization can be difficult to accept, and our ego will definitely resist this level of responsibility, but once you start to practice this method and see results it is nothing short of miraculous. A great exercise is to choose something that you already know you’ve caused for yourself? Over-weight? Addicted to nicotine, alcohol or some other substance? Do you have anger or self esteem issues? Health problems? Start there and say you’re sorry. Just say I’M SORRY. That’s it! It is even more powerful to say it more clearly: “I realize that I am responsible for this (issue) in my life and I feel remorse that my consciousness has allowed this.”

Step 2: Ask Forgiveness – SAY: PLEASE FORGIVE ME

Don’t worry about who you’re asking. Just ask! PLEASE FORGIVE ME. Say it over and over. Mean it. Remember your remorse from step 1 as you ask to be forgiven.

Step 3: Gratitude – SAY: THANK YOU

Say “THANK YOU” – again it doesn’t really matter who or what you’re thanking. Thank your body for all it does for you. Thank yourself for being the best you can be. Thank God. Thank the Universe. Thank whatever it was that just forgave you. Just keep saying THANK YOU.

Step 4: Love – SAY: I LOVE YOU

This can also be step 1. Say I LOVE YOU. Say it to your body, say it to God, say it to the universe. Say I LOVE YOU to the air you breathe, to the house that shelters you. Say I LOVE YOU to your challenges. Say it over and over. Just say I LOVE YOU and mean it. There is nothing as powerful as Love.

That’s it. The whole practice in a nutshell. Simple and amazingly effective.
