Anniversary
Date of an event from a previous year and the observance of this milestone
Memorial plaque presented by the National Capital Sesquicentennial Commission, 1951
An anniversary is the date on which an event took place or an institution was founded in a previous year, and may also refer to the commemoration or celebration of that event. The word was first used for Catholic feasts to commemorate saints.
Most countries celebrate national anniversaries, typically called national days. These could be the date of independence of the nation or the adoption of a new constitution or form of government. There is no definite method for determining the date of establishment of an institution, and it is generally decided within the institution by convention. The important dates in a sitting monarch’s reign may also be commemorated, an event often referred to as a “jubilee”.
Anniversary names [ edit ]
Birthdays are the most common type of anniversary, on which someone’s birthdate is commemorated each year. The actual celebration is sometimes moved for practical reasons, as in the case of an official birthday or one falling on February 29.
Wedding anniversaries are also often celebrated, on the same day of the year as the wedding occurred.
Death anniversaries.
The Latin phrase dies natalis (literally “birth day”) has become a common term, adopted in many languages, especially in intellectual and institutional circles, for the anniversary of the founding (“legal or statutory birth”) of an institution, such as an alma mater (college or other school). In ancient Rome, the [dies] Aquilae natalis was the “birthday of the eagle”, the anniversary of the official founding of a legion.
Anniversaries of nations are usually marked by the number of years elapsed, expressed with Latin words or Roman numerals.
Latin-derived numerical names [ edit ]
Latin terms for anniversaries are mostly straightforward, particularly those relating to the first twenty years (1–20), or multiples of ten years (30, 40, 50, 60, 70 etc.), or multiples of centuries or millenniums (100, 200, 300, 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, etc.) In these instances, the name of the anniversary is generally derived from the Latin word(s) for the respective number of years. However, when anniversaries relate to fractions of centuries (125, 150, 175, 250 years—i.e. 1.25, 1.5, 1.75, and 2.5 centuries), the situation is not as simple.
Roman fractions were based on a duodecimal system. From 1⁄12 to 8⁄12 they were expressed as multiples of twelfths (uncia “twelfth”; the source of the English words inch and ounce) and from 9⁄12 to 11⁄12 they were expressed as multiple twelfths less than the next whole unit—i.e. a whole unit less 3⁄12, 2⁄12 or 1⁄12 respectively. There were also special terms for quarter (quadrans), half (semis), and three-quarters (dodrans). Dodrans is a Latin contraction of de-quadrans which means “a whole unit less a quarter” (de means “from”; quadrans means “quarter”). Thus for the example of 175 years, the term is a quarter century less than the next whole (bi)century or 175 = (−25 + 200).[1]
In Latin, it seems that this rule did not apply precisely for 1+1⁄2. While secundus is Latin for “second”, and bis for “twice”, these terms are not used such as in sesqui-secundus. Instead sesqui (or ses) is used by itself.

Quasqui is a contraction from quadrans “a quarter” plus the clitic conjunction -que “and”. The term was coined by Funk and Wagnalls editor Robert L. Chapman in 1961.[2] 150 years Sesquicentennial Term broken down as sesqui- (one and a half) centennial (100 years) 175 years Dodransbicentennial Dodrans is a Latin contraction of de-quadrans which means “a whole unit less a quarter” (de means “from”; quadrans means “quarter”). 175 years is a quarter century less than the next whole (bi)century (175 = 200 − 25).[1] Dodrabicentennial Alternative Latin form of Dodransbicentennial Dequasbicentennial Alternative Latin form of Dodransbicentennial Dosquicentennial Dosquicentennial has been used in modern times and this is perhaps a modern contraction of “de-quadrans”. However, it seems inappropriate to combine the terms que and de when dealing with such Roman fractions. In any event, if such a conjunction was appropriate then it would perhaps more likely have been “Dosquibicentennial” (but the result is little shorter anyway).[1] Demisemiseptcentennial Probably[ attribution needed ] a modern coined term: demisemiseptcentennial; literally one-half (demi-) × one-half (semi-) × seven (sept-) × 100 years (centennial)—also demisemiseptcentenary.[3][4] Quartoseptcentennial Probably[ attribution needed ] a modern coined term: quartoseptcentennial; literally one-quarter (quarto-) × seven (sept-) × 100 years (centennial)—also quartoseptcentenary.[3] Terquasquicentennial A coined word for an anniversary of 175 years, but the elements of the word literally refer to an anniversary of 375 years, as follows: ter- (3) × quasqui- (1 1 ⁄ 4 ) × centennial (100 years) Septaquintaquinquecentennial Suggested by lexicographer Robert L. Chapman to William Safire; first appeared in Safire’s column, “On Language” (The New York Times Magazine, February 12, 1995). It is a coined word for an anniversary of 175 years, but the elements of the word literally refer to an anniversary of 35,000 years, as follows: septaquinta- (70) × quinque- (5) × centennial (100 years) 200 years Bicentennial Bicentenary 250 years Sestercentennial To express 2 + 1 ⁄ 2 in Latin it would be expressed as “half-three”. The term relates to being halfway [from the second] to the third integer. In Latin this is “Sestertius”, which is a contraction of semis (halfway) tertius (third)—hence Sestercentennial.[1] Semiquincentennial Probably[ attribution needed ] a modern coined term: semi- (half) × quin (5) × centennial (100 years) = 250 years. Used by Brown University in 2015.[5] Bicenquinquagenary Used by Princeton University in 1996, Reading, Pennsylvania in 1998, and Washington and Lee University in 1999.[6] It is a coined word for an anniversary of 250 years: bi- (2) × cen(t)- (100) + quinquagenary (50 years). Quarter-millennial [7] 300 years Tercentenary Tercentennial Tricentenary Tricentennial 350 years Sesquarcentennial Sesquarcentennial is a modern coined term; sesquarcentennial for 350 years is deduced here from the “Sestertius” definition for 250 years above. Anniversary symbols [ edit ]
Many anniversaries have special names. Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics and at Home by Emily Post, published in 1922, contained suggestions for wedding anniversary gifts for 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 50, and 75 years.[10] Wedding anniversary gift suggestions for other years were added in later editions and publications; they now comprise what is referred to as the “traditional” list. Generally speaking, the longer the period, the more precious or durable the material associated with it. For the general list of the wedding anniversary symbols, see Wedding anniversary.
However, there are variations according to some national traditions. There exist numerous partially overlapping, partially contradictory lists of anniversary gifts (such as wedding stones), separate from the ‘traditional’ names. The concepts of a person’s birthday stone and zodiac stone, by contrast, are fixed for life according to the day of the week, month, or astrological sign corresponding to the recipient’s birthday.

Period of 10 years
A decade is a period of 10 years. The word is derived (via French and Latin) from the Ancient Greek: δεκάς, romanized: dekas, which means a group of ten. Decades may describe any ten-year period, such as those of a person’s life, or refer to specific groupings of calendar years.
Usage [ edit ]
Any period of ten years is a “decade”.[1] For example, the statement that “during his last decade, Mozart explored chromatic harmony to a degree rare at the time” merely refers to the last ten years of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s life without regard to which calendar years are encompassed. Also, ‘the first decade’ of a person’s life begins on the day of their birth and ends at the end of their 10th year of life when they have their 10th birthday; the second decade of life starts with their 11th year of life (during which one is typically still referred to as being “10”) and ends at the end of their 20th year of life, on their 20th birthday; similarly, the third decade of life, when one is in one’s twenties or 20s, starts with the 21st year of life, and so on, with subsequent decades of life similarly described by referencing the tens digit of one’s age.
0-to-9 decade [ edit ]
The most widely used method for denominating decades is to group years based on their shared tens digit, from a year ending in a 0 to a year ending in a 9 – for example, the period from 1960 to 1969 is the 1960s,[2] and the period from 1990 to 1999 is the 1990s. Sometimes, only the tens part is mentioned (’60s or sixties, and ’90s or nineties), although this may leave it ambiguous as to which century is meant. However, this method of grouping decades cannot be applied to the decade immediately preceding AD 10, because there was no year 0.
Particularly in the 20th century, 0-to-9 decades came to be referred to with associated nicknames, such as the “Swinging Sixties” (1960s), the “Warring Forties” (1940s) and the “Roaring Twenties” (1920s). This practice is occasionally also applied to decades of earlier centuries; for example, referencing the 1890s as the “Gay Nineties” or “Naughty Nineties”.
1-to-0 decade [ edit ]
A rarer approach groups years from the beginning of the AD calendar era to produce successive decades from a year ending in a 1 to a year ending in a 0, with the years 1–10 described as “the 1st decade”, years 11–20 “the 2nd decade”, and so on; later decades are more usually described as ‘the Nth decade of the Mth century’ (using the strict interpretation of ‘century’).[a] For example, “the second decad of the 12th. Cent.” (sic);[3] “The last decade of that century”;[4] “1st decade of the 16th century”;[5] “third decade of the 16th century”;[6] “the first decade of the 18th century”.[7] This decade grouping may also be identified explicitly; for example, “1961–1970”;[8] “2001–2010”;[9] “2021–2030”.[10] The BC calendar era ended with the year 1 BC and the AD calendar era began the following year, AD 1. There was no year 0.
Usage methods compared Year 1 2 3 … 9 10 11 12 … 19 20 … 2000 2001 2002 … 2009 2010 2011 2012 … 2019 2020 2021 2022 … 2029 2030 0-to-9 decade 0s 10s … 2000s 2010s 2020s … 1-to-0 decade 1st decade of the 1st century 2nd decade of the 1st century … 1st decade of the 21st century 2nd decade of the 21st century 3rd decade of the 21st century
Public usage of the two methods [ edit ]
A YouGov poll was conducted on December 2, 2019, asking 13,582 adults in the United States, “When do you think the next decade will begin and end?” Results showed that 64% answered that “the next decade” would begin on January 1, 2020, and end on December 31, 2029 (0-to-9 method); 17% answered that “the next decade” would begin on January 1, 2021, and end on December 31, 2030 (1-to-0 method); 19% replied that they did not know.[11]

Notes [ edit ]
^ There are two ways of thinking about when a century begins and ends. The “strict” viewpoint counts centuries from −01 to −00, while the “popular” viewpoint counts centuries from −00 to −99. For example, the “first decade of the 19th century” may mean either 1801–1810 (if used in “strict” terms) or 1800–1809 (if used in “popular” terms). See century for more information.

Unit of time lasting 100 years
A century is a period of 100 years. Centuries are numbered ordinally in English and many other languages. The word century comes from the Latin centum, meaning one hundred. Century is sometimes abbreviated as c.[1]
A centennial or centenary is a hundredth anniversary, or a celebration of this, typically the remembrance of an event which took place a hundred years earlier.
Start and end of centuries [ edit ]
Although a century can mean any arbitrary period of 100 years, there are two viewpoints on the nature of standard centuries. One is based on strict construction, while the other is based on popular perception.
According to the strict construction, the 1st century AD began with AD 1 and ended with AD 100, the 2nd century spanning the years 101 to 200, with the same pattern continuing onward.[note 1] In this model, the n-th century starts with the year that ends with “01”, and ends with the year that ends with “00”; for example, the 20th century comprises the years 1901 to 2000 in strict usage.[2]
In popular perception and practice, centuries are structured by grouping years based on sharing the ‘hundreds’ digit(s). In this model, the n-th century starts with the year that ends in “00” and ends with the year ending in “99”;[3] for example, the years 1900 to 1999, in popular culture, constitute the 20th century.[4] (This is similar to the grouping of “0-to-9 decades” which share the ‘tens’ digit.)
To facilitate calendrical calculations by computer, the astronomical year numbering and ISO 8601 systems both contain a year zero, with the astronomical year 0 corresponding to the year 1 BCE, the astronomical year -1 corresponding to 2 BCE, and so on.[5][6]
Alternative naming systems [ edit ]
Informally, years may be referred to in groups based on the hundreds part of the year. In this system, the years 1900–1999 are referred to as the nineteen hundreds (1900s). Aside from English usage, this system is used in Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic, Finnish and Hungarian. The Swedish nittonhundratalet (or 1900-talet), Danish nittenhundredetallet (or 1900-tallet), Norwegian nittenhundretallet (or 1900-tallet), Finnish tuhatyhdeksänsataaluku (or 1900-luku) and Hungarian ezerkilencszázas évek (or 1900-as évek) refer unambiguously to the years 1900–1999.
Italian also has a similar system, but it only expresses the hundreds and omits the word for “thousand”. This system mainly functions from the 11th to the 20th century:
il Quattrocento (that is “the four hundred”, the 15th century) il Cinquecento (that is “the five hundred”, the 16th century).
These terms are often used in other languages when referring to the history of Italy.
Similar dating units in other calendar systems [ edit ]
While the century has been commonly used in the West, other cultures and calendars have utilized differently sized groups of years in a similar manner. The Hindu calendar, in particular, summarizes its years into groups of 60,[7] while the Aztec calendar considers groups of 52.[8]

^ AD and CE year numbering, which are numerically equivalent, are now commonly used to number years, including those which occurred before these notations were invented; AD did not become widespread in Europe until early in the 2nd millennium.
