Challenge Yourself To Swim 5K In Just Eight Weeks’ Time

In most forms of self-powered locomotion 5km isn’t far – it’s an hour’s walk, a run of less than half an hour for most, or an even quicker bike ride. It’s a ruddy long way, though, when you’re propelling yourself through water – 2½ hours is a good target for the uninitiated.

That makes it a significant challenge for your average Joe or Josephine, but one that’s eminently achievable if you’ve got a solid base of fitness, some confidence in the pool and Swimathon’s training plans (opens in new tab). Of course, don’t talk it down in that way when you’re soliciting sponsorship – “I’m doing 200 lengths of my local 25m pool” sounds much more impressive, as well as having the advantage of being true.

Swimathon (opens in new tab) is an annual aquatic fundraiser, which this year is supporting Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie. It’s being held in pools across the UK between Friday 27th and Sunday 29th April 2018.

The 5km distance is the longest you can set your sights on, but there are also 400m, 1.5km and 2.5km swims for individuals to take on, while teams of two to people can tackle 1.5km or 5km.

And there’s just the right amount of time for people with decent endurance levels to train for the 5km distance. Swimathon has beginner, intermediate and advanced ten-week training plans for all the distances on its website, and while those with calendars to hand (or who have read the headline on this article) will point out there are only eight weeks before the event, we’ve checked with Jolyon Finck, Swimathon head coach, who put the plans together, and he’s confirmed there’s no reason not to dive straight in at week three.

See related

All of the 5km training plans ask you to put in three (occasionally two) sessions a week. The length of these sessions ranges from 30-75 minutes in the beginner sub-2½hr plan to 60-100 minutes in the advanced sub-1½hr plan.

Finck suggests that people with experience of running or cycling endurance events should be able to transfer that staying power to the water, and swimming novices should see the greatest physical improvement over the course of the plan. Even those who have spent a bit more time in the water should see their skills develop thanks to the various technique drills you’ll tackle.

Of course, if this week’s session on the beginner 5K plan – 70 minutes in the pool, covering 2,250m using a variety of strokes – sounds like too much of an ask, that’s probably an indication that you should sign up for one of the shorter distances. Finck recommends 1.5km as a good starting point for those without a background in endurance sports or who find swimming a significant challenge. This week’s session in the beginner 1.5km plan clocks in at a much more manageable 600m. Whichever distance you choose, Swimathon is a worthwhile challenge that could end up sparking a real passion for the pool.

Swimathon is on 27th-29th April. Find a participating pool and sign up at swimathon.org (opens in new tab). £9.75-£26, plus fundraising

Open Water Pace For A 5K Race

How fast is fast for a 5K race?

We made some estimates on how long a 5K swim would take based on an average 100-meter pace in the open water (i.e., no pushing off walls, no deviation from the straight-line course, no hydration breaks, no drafting).

Since we estimate only 1.6% of Americans can swim 500 meters non-stop in a pool, we believe those who swim 5K are better open water swimmers than 99% of humans.

• If you swim an average pace of 1:10 per 100 meters, you will finish in 58:20.

• If you swim at a 1:15 per 100 pace, you will finish in 1:02:30.

• If you swim at a 1:30 per 100 pace, you will finish in 1:15.

• If you swim at a 1:45 per 100 pace, you will finish in 1:27:30.

• If you swim at a 2:00 per 100 pace, you will finish in 1:40.

• If you swim at a 2:30 per 100 pace, you will finish n 2:05.

Any pace under 1:15 per 100 meters in the open water is very fast (world class).

Any pace under 1:45 per 100 meters in the open water is admirable for competitive swimmers and any endurance athlete.

Any pace under 2:30 per 100 meters in the open water is respectable for any adult, especially relative to the population in general.

How Much Swimming Equals Running 5 Miles?

You probably can swim about 1 mile in the same time as you run 5 miles. Image Credit: Patrik Giardino/The Image Bank/GettyImages

Maybe you love running, but you just need to mix up your routine a little, and you want to know how swimming compares as an effective workout. Depending on your exercise goals and the intensity with which you’re comfortable doing either activity, swimming could meet your needs just as easily as running.

Video of the Day

Tip Depending on your speed, you will probably be able to swim 1 mile in the amount of time it takes you to run 5 miles, and both workouts will burn close to the same number of calories.

What Are The Benefits Of Swimming

First, it’s important to think about the reasons that swimming is an effective workout. Like running and other forms of exercise, swimming burns calories, improves your mood, increases your energy and lowers risk of disease.

But there are two major benefits that set swimming apart. You might have heard before that swimming is a full-body workout, meaning it works every muscle in your body. You also might have heard that it is a low-impact workout. Because the water supports your body weight, you are less likely to injure a joint or muscle when swimming.

In fact, the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps lists decreased muscle and joint pain and improved use of painful joints among the benefits of swimming.

Measuring Up A Swim Versus A Run

Although both are great workouts, comparing a swim and a run is like comparing apples and oranges. Devices for measuring walking and running — such as a pedometer or an accelerometer — cannot measure swimming or cycling.

Let’s look at 1 kilometer of swimming versus running. If you are swimming 1 kilometer a day (about .62 miles), this would require 40 lengths of a 25-meter swimming pool. A swimmer doing one length a minute could finish this workout in 40 minutes. If this workout were done four days a week, you could easily meet the weekly 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise recommended by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

If you were to try running the same distance at a pace of 5 mph, you would be done in a little over six minutes. As you can see, you would need to run much farther than you swim to get the same recommended minutes of exercise!

Swimming vs Running Calories

You might be wondering about how many calories swimming burns versus running. The good news is that both aerobic workouts can burn some serious energy%20(www.cdc.gov/healthyweight/physical_activity/index.html), although running does have a slight edge. If a 154-pound man were to run at 5 mph and complete 5 miles, he would burn 590 calories.

If that same 154-pound man were to spend an hour swimming slow freestyle laps, he would burn 510 calories. The number of calories a person burns will vary based on the person’s weight and the intensity of their workout.

Another perspective on swimming-to-running conversion can be taken from guidelines put forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American College of Sports Medicine, and the North Carolina Office of State Human Resources.

Per this swimming-to-running conversion, swimming constitutes a vigorous activity, and approximately 25 minutes of swimming is equal to about 3 miles of running. If you regularly run 5 miles, you would want to swim for approximately 42 minutes to get an equivalent workout.

A Mile of Swimming For 5 Miles of Running

Now let’s do the math for a timed workout. If you swim at a pace of one length per minute, you could do 60 lengths in an hour, a total of 1,500 meters — nearly 1 mile (which is actually 1,609.3 meters, strictly speaking).

This would take the same amount of time as a 5-mile run at a pace of 10 minutes per mile and, in the case of the previously described 154-pound man, burn close to the same number of calories.

In short, comparing swimming and running all depends on your body weight, your intensity, your duration and — of course — your workout goals. But whether you’re thinking about burning calories or simply hitting your minutes of aerobic activity, both swimming and running are great ways to meet your needs.
