The Difference Between a Package and a Nuc Keeping Backyard Bees
There are a few different ways to purchase a new colony of bees but packages or nucs are two of the most common. In this article I describe what each is, and some of the benefits/drawbacks to each.
What is a Bee Package?
A bee package is a wooden frame box with screen on two sides. It is used to transport bees to a new hive. Packages are sold by the pound. There are roughly 3500 bees per pound so a three pound package contains around 10,000 bees.
Inside the package is a feeding can filled with a syrup mixture. This is used to feed the bees while in transport.
There is also a small wooden box with a screen on one side. This box holds a queen and a few worker bees to attend to her while on the trip. This small wooden box has a cork on one end and is suspended from the top of the package.
In a bee package, the bees are not necessarily related to each other, and are not related to the boxed queen.
What is a Nuc?
A nuc typically consists of 4 established frames. It will contain two frames of honey for feeding and two frames of brood to expand the hive. It will also have a laying queen.
In a nuc, the bees are related to each other and to the queen.
Benefits of a Package
Less Expensive- The top benefit of buying a package of bees is that initially, they are less expensive than a nuke. However, a nuc is more established…so it’s sort of a “time is money” kinda thing that you’ll have to decide on.
Easier to Find– In my experience it is easier to find a package of bees for sale. This form tends to be popular with the larger bee companies. Even our local Family Farm and Home teamed up with one of the larger bee retailers this year and was offering package bees for sale.
Some of the larger retail companies will sell nucs, but it’s more often a smaller operation bee transaction. You may have to search for a local bee keeper in your area willing to sell a nuc.
Learning Experience- A package of bees will give you the opportunity to see a colony start from the “ground” up. They will draw out fresh comb, the queen will lay the first brood and you will be able to witness how a hive is built from nothing at all.
Not Limited by Frame Size- When you purchase a nuc you have to make sure that the frames will fit into your hive box. A package doesn’t include frames so the bees can be deposited in any style of hive.
Benefits of a Nuc
All the Bees are Related- In a nuc, you are essentially buying a family of bees. The bees are all related, they are used to working together and most of all, they are related to their queen. She is accepted and already laying brood.
Head Start- Because a nuc is comprised of already established frames, this will give you about a 2 week head start on honey production. The bees do not have to take the extra time to begin the hive from scratch. This time saver is especially important if you live in a cold climate where the honey season is limited.
Your bees can also take advantage of the spring flow, where in a package of bees the workers have to focus on building comb and often miss the spring abundance.
No Need to Feed- Nucs come with two honey frames used to feed the bees until they can continue expanding. With a package, you must feed the bees until they build comb and begin making honey.
Less Stress- Nucs tend to be a less stressful transition for the bees. They essential are taking a bit of their original home with them in the move. They have developed relationships, accepted their laying queen and already have brood and food available to them.
Nuc installation is usually less stressful as well. A package of bees is often shaken into the empty hive where the nuc frames can be gently places inside without much disruption.
In my opinion, if you can find a nuc for sale, that’s the better way to go. But don’t sacrifice bee keeping this year if a package is all you can find/afford. Both are proven to be successful ways to begin bee keeping.

If the weather is good (sunny/warm), bees gather nectar and pollen for the upcoming brood. More workers can gather more nectar and pollen and can care for more brood. This can give a head start to 3-pound packages.
If the weather is poor (wet/cold), which usually happens in a Utah springtime, beekeepers will need to feed bees. More workers mean more mouths to feed, and more time for the beekeeper at each apiary. (This becomes more of an issue with increasing hive numbers.) Packaged bees are used to having plenty to eat, as they come from sunny California (or the South). Thus, a 2-pound package can be easier to feed in the springtime.
In the cold weather, 3 pounds of bees may be warmer in their hive because of more body heat.
The queen bee will lay as many eggs as bees can care for. Caring for eggs is typically a job for newly emerged nurse bees. She can only expand her brood chamber so far with the initial package workers. Two pounds of workers will expand to cover about 4 deep frames. (“Cover” means they will take care of eggs laid in the comb, literally “cover” the space with their little bee bodies.) Three pounds of workers will expand the brood chamber to cover about 5 frames. At that point, the expansion stalls out because there are no new emerging nurse bees to care for a larger brood chamber. Once the first set of new bees emerges, the hive really takes off.
If we conservatively say that the queen can lay 1,000 eggs a day, then it would only take her 3 days to make up the difference between a 2-pound package and a 3-pound package. About 4-6 weeks after the package is hived, you won’t notice any difference between 2- and 3-pound packages. They will have similar bee numbers and accomplish the same amount of work.
This management decision really only impacts the first 4-6 weeks of growth. The 3-pound package has a slight advantage in good weather. The 2-pound has an advantage to the beekeeper in poor weather.
And then there is price. In 2013, 3-pound packages cost $75, and 2-pounders were $65. The $10 difference is significant if you are buying, say 30 hives. It would save you $300.
Because of the cost difference, we use 2-pound packages for our operation and they work well. Over hundreds of hives, there is no significant difference between the two sizes after 6 weeks. Also, 2-pound packages are standard in the beekeeping industry.
We start our 2-pound packages in a nuc box (like the awesome barn hive below) until they fill up the space, and then transfer to a standard 10-frame hive.

What To Expect With Your Package Of Bees
Beekeeping is a fantastic hobby but it does have a steep learning curve and requires a bit of patience. One way to make the process easier is by purchasing a package of bees from your local beekeeper.
A package of honey bees is a small, easily transportable hive that contains roughly ten thousand honeybees, a mated queen, and a can of sugar syrup in a vented box.
The bees included in the package are normally from separate colonies with a mated queen also from a different colony.
Since the queen has not yet been accepted by these bees, or commonly referred to as “locked in” with the colony, it will take time for the bees to accept her. There are specific methods for introducing the queen and I’ll include a video below illustrating this process.
What you’ll typically get with a package of bees is a can of sugar syrup to feed the bees during shipping. Once you receive your bees, they will continue to require supplemental feeding for around a month depending on your local conditions.
It is not uncommon to receive a large number of dead bees; some will die during shipping because they are stressed and have been deprived of their normal colony conditions. The longer the shipping time, the more dead bees you’ll receive.
Packaged bees tend to be very grumpy and agitated when you first transfer them to a new hive. This is due the bees being from different colonies with an unfamiliar queen. Once they accept a queen and are working, your bees will calm down quite a bit. Buying packaged bees is the most popular option for new beekeepers since its cheaper than buying a nucleus colony.
One of the biggest advantages to purchasing a package of bees is how much you will learn as a beginner beekeeper. You will get to observe how the bees build a hive from scratch and you will be more hands on in the beginning. You can also use any type of hive box since it will be a small colony to begin with.
As I mentioned above, packaged bees are usually made up of worker bees from different colonies as well as a new queen from a different hive. Some suppliers also package a couple worker bees with the queen bee. But this does vary between suppliers.
Sometimes your bees can arrive pretty beat up depending on weather conditions and shipping times. I’d recommend to always inspect your queen to make sure she is alive and healthy. If you’re new to beekeeping, it’s best to have an experienced beekeeper assist you with this.

Advantages Of Packaged Bees
Least expensive option for purchasing bees High availability – it is very easy to locate a packages of bees and they don’t have to be purchased locally. Can be shipped over long distances – many suppliers will ship packages nationwide. Bees can be easily placed in any type of hive box, The Langstroth, The Warre or The Top Bar hive. Less likely to have diseases and parasites – but they will still require treatment early on. Easily transferred into a new hive. Education – is the best learning experience for a new beekeeper.
Disadvantages of Packaged Bees
Weaker colony – these bees will require more feeding, support, and monitoring to become a strong colony. Young unrelated queen – it will take time for the bees to accept the queen, and in some cases they don’t and you will have to purchase a new queen (re-queen the colony). Higher chance of re-queening and/or absconding Increased stress on the bees from shipping and you will receive a large number of dead bees. The colonies requires a lot more time to build since they have no comb, brood, or food stores. Possible climate difference between shipping origin and hive installation. This again increases the stress on these bees. You are likely to receive more stings since these bees will be highly agitated and very grumpy. These bees were not prepared to leave their previous colony, are highly stressed from shipping and are queen less.
I still cannot overstate the importance of the education a new beekeeper will receive when purchasing bee packages. Not to mention how much easier it is to order packages of bees no matter where you live, and they are more cost effective than purchasing nucleus colonies (NUC’s).
Packaged bees can be easily introduced into any type of hive, whether you have a Top Bar, Warre or Langstroth hive. There also tends to be less issues with mites and parasites since there is no brood frames included. But you will need to treat your bees within a couple of weeks.
The biggest disadvantage to packaged bees is they tend to be pulled from different colonies and therefore are genetically unrelated. They also require a lot more TLC and if the colony doesn’t accept the queen you many have to purchase another. The colony will require quite a bit of feeding to build comb and to gather nectar and pollen.
Packaged bees also have a higher chance of absconding especially if being introduced into a brand-new hive. New hives and frames do not contain the attractive pheromones and scents that older frames and hives do.
If you’re new to beekeeping, it’s always best to purchase 2 packages of bees. You just never know what could happen especially since you’re learning, and you will make mistakes. You could be incredibly lucky and have both colonies take off, but you could have one completely die or one colony not accept the queen.

How long can you keep packaged bees in the shipping container?
I always recommend installing your bees as soon as possible. If you can, it’s best to install your bees into the new hive the same day you receive them. You don’t know how long they’ve been caged and hopefully you don’t have to many dead bees.
You could probably keep them in the shipping container for 3-4 days as long as you continue to feed them. But, as I stated above, for the best chance of success I recommend getting them out of the shipping container as quickly as possible. You should also check the level of sugar syrup in the can, this will give you some indication of how long the bees have been caged.
When should I order my package of bees?
If you’re planning on ordering packages of bees and/or queens, I would recommend ordering them early. It’s always best to order them in the winter for delivery in March through May.
Suppliers ship on a first come first serve basis and you need to get your orders in early. As a beginner I would recommend ordering in December for a package of bees. The earlier the better since suppliers will sell out fast.
