The whole procedure is quick, rather simple and there are not that many things that can go wrong. However, there are certain aspects of sunless tanning that you should consider and pay close attention to. For example, you should make sure you don’t have other skin treatments the day of your spray tanning session (like sauna, spa, etc). You should not apply deodorant or antiperspirant right before you head to your tanning salon; you should not shower or go swimming for a least 8 hours after your session, and so on…But, can you shave after a spray tan?Of course, this is quite frequent and very common question in the world of spray tanning, and the answer is YES – you can shave both before and after your session, but there are certain rules for you to follow. Simple rules, but rules nonetheless. Tips On Shaving BEFORE Your Spray TanWe at Artesian Tan recommend shaving one whole day before your spray tanning appointment. This way you will actually exfoliate your skin and thus allow the tanner to set even better. Both shaving and waxing provide a smoother skin for a spray tanning specialist to work with, which means your tan will be of even better quality as exfoliated skin doesn’t have dry patches that usually lead to uneven spray tanning results. Special Tip For Women With Dark Hair Persons with extremely coarse hair should shave at least the night before their appointment. This way you will give your pores a chance to close up prior to the session. If, however, your pores are open during the applying of the tanner, the solution won’t be able to settle into the pores of your skin which often leads to the appearance of notorious polka dots.Special Tip For Women With Light HairThe ladies with fair hair don’t have to worry too much about shaving as they can very well shave the day of their spray tanning appointment. Tips On Shaving AFTER Your Spray Tan SessionSince shaving does more than just cut your hair – it also exfoliates the skin quite a bit – you should wait at least 8 hours after your spray tanning session is over as the tanner needs this time to set. There are also several tricks on how to do this correctly: Use New RazorChances are your old and who-knows-how-many-times used razor is pretty dull and dirty. This means using it will probably drag heavily on your skin and thus remove the tanner. Make sure you get a new one that will be able to smoothly glide over your skin without taking the spray tan with it. Never Use Shaving FoamShaving foam and other similar shaving products are usually packed with ingredients (like alcohol and heavy detergents) that can potentially damage your sunless tan. If it is absolutely necessary for you to use something that will act as shaving foam, try using conditioner or a shower gel, but make sure they don’t contain sulfate. There are also shaving lotions you can use that are made especially for sunless tanning. Do It Lightly While shaving, avoid pressing too hard. Otherwise, your razor will scrape off the tanning solution. Don’t Shave Too OftenIf it is possible, make sure you are not shaving on a daily basis. Because the more you shave, the faster your new spray-on tan will fade out. So, there you go folks. To answer the titular question Can you shave after a spray tan? once again – yes, you can, but as long as you follow the rules we mentioned above. Shaving Before and After a Spray Tan
When you go in for a spray tan, you want to make sure everything is perfect to get the most out of your tan. If you’re new to spray tanning, you might be wondering when to shave, how to prepare for your tan, what to bring, and many other spray tan care questions. While it might seem overwhelming at first, rest assured that once you figure out your spray tan routine, you’ll have it down to a science.
Here are a few tips to get you started:
Shaving Tips for Before a Spray Tan
When it comes to shaving before your spray tan, ideally you should shave at least 24 hours before your tan. The soonest you should shave before your tan is four hours, and make sure to end your shower with a nice cold rinse to close up your pores. If you shave any closer to your appointment, you run the risk of your spray tan turning out streaky because razors leave a film on your skin which makes it harder for the solution to adhere to your skin.
Here are some other spray tan tips to prepare you for your appointment:
Get all your other beauty services done before your spray tan like nails, waxing, etc.
Wax at least 24 hours before your appointment. Wax can stay on the skin, making it difficult for your spray tan to hold.
Exfoliate in the shower at least 4 hours before your spray tan. This helps the tanning solution adhere to your skin, but it also gives your pores enough time to close back up for an even color. As mentioned earlier, end your shower with a nice cold rinse to really prepare your skin.
When you’re exfoliating, make sure to use an exfoliator that’s oil-free and made from organic ingredients.
When you come to your appointment, make sure you don’t have any lotions or makeup on.
Wear dark, loose-fitting clothes to your appointment
Shaving Tips for After a Spray Tan
Whether or not you can shave after a spray tan shouldn’t be the only question on your mind after your spray tan. There are a lot of post-tan care tips that you should know to make the most out of your tan. But this one is one of the most important tips because not only does a razor remove hair, but it also exfoliates your skin.
Here are some tips for shaving after a spray tan:
Use a new razor because a fresh razor will cut into your skin less and not remove as much of the tanning solution
Wait at least 8 hours after your spray tan to shave for the first time.
Use an oil-free moisturizing body wash when shaving, not traditional shaving cream. Most shaving creams on the market contain alcohol and heavy detergents that can strip your tan. You can also find a lotion to use that’s made especially for after a spray tan.
Shave lightly and try not to press into your skin too hard. The lighter your shaving, the less it will exfoliate.
Don’t shave too often. A little leg hair never hurt anyone, right?
So long story short, yes you can shave after a spray tan as long as you are careful and don’t strip your skin of the tanning solution.
Want more spray tan care tips? Here are a few additional tips to help you care for your skin if you decide to shave after a spray tan:
Moisturize in the morning and at night after getting a tan.
From day 3 on, use our Tan Extender as your primary moisturizer.
To preserve your tan, avoid swimming, long showers, baths, steam rooms, and saunas.
Don’t be afraid to “top off” your tan with some tinted moisturizers. Just make sure that the color is the same as your Be Bronze tan. Highlighter and bronzer also help you keep that glow for longer.
Don’t exfoliate until you’re ready to say goodbye to your current tan and hello to your new one.
Conclusion
Hopefully we answered your question about shaving before and after a spray tan and provided you with tips on making your tan last as long as possible. If you are shaving after your tan, make sure to wait at least 8 hours, avoid any harsh chemicals and hot water, and shave gently to avoid exfoliating your skin too early. When can I shave after tanning?
Shaving is a common way to remove your body hair, but can you do it after a spray tan?
My clients dread the looming ‘stubble’ that would appear a few days after shaving pre-spray tan.
The answer is yes you should shave before tanning, but it depends on a few aspects that I’d like you to read. Have a scroll through this guide to assess whether shaving your legs after you’ve fake tanned will leave you smooth and de-haired, or unfortunately patchy.
Let’s start by describing how fake tan works.
Shaving Guide For After a Spray Tan You can shave 9 hours after a spray tan as it will have fully developed by then (this applies to rapid tans too)
Use a new razor, as a blunt one as a dull blade, will remove a fair amount of your skin along with the hair
Use an oil-free shaving product as oil removes fake tan
Don’t shave too often
Don’t press down too hard on the razor, lightly glide the blade over your skin
How does fake tan work
The top few layers of the skin are temporarily stained with fake tan. The DHA (a simple carbohydrate), reacts with the oxygen in the air and the amino acids in the skin, causing a gradual darkening effect. Much like if you bit an apple and left it out!
The skin renewal process
Now we move on to the skin, and how it sheds. The epidermis (the outermost layer of the skin), is constantly renewing itself. The lower layers of the epidermis form new cells, and these surface in roughly 4 weeks, replacing the older cells.
Can I shave after tanning
Using the knowledge that fake tan temporarily stains the top few layers of the skin and that the skin is constantly renewing itself, it can be determined that your fake tan will be temporary, usually lasting around one week.
Yes, you can shave after spray tanning, but be aware that some of your colour may come off, especially if you soak in the bath or shower for long periods of time prior to shaving.
have prepped well for your tan (See spray tan preparation)
moisturised daily (no oils please)
have not dried your body with a towel straight after showering/bathing/swimming as this softens the skin, making you more susceptible to peeling skin Shaving is less likely to affect your tan if you:
How to prolong your tan

Epilate as an alternative to shaving. The same logic applies to epilating as it does to waxing, although it is only for the brave! Epilating allows you to manually pull out your hair at the root with a small rotating machine. I use one every 3 days to keep on top of my hair growth.

Tips For Shaving When You Get A Spray Tan
The best way to shave after a spray tan is to use a sulfate-free shower wash, a new razor, and a light touch. Pat dry when you’re done and moisturize with a self-tanning lotion to extend your color. All other hair removal methods should be done before your spray tan so as not to remove your color.

Shaving Before Your Spray Tan
Shaving can help to exfoliate removing dry patches that could lead to an uneven spray tan.
If you are waxing, bleaching, or doing laser hair removal please have this done several days before your tanning appointment.
Do I Have To Shave Before A Spray Tan?
No, shaving is a personal choice and you don’t need to shave at all if that is not your preference.
Can You Shave The Night Before A Spray Tan?
Yes, the night before your spray tan appointment is the perfect time to shave and exfoliate to prep your skin. This gives your skin time to calm down before your spray tan is applied.
Can You Shave The Day Of A Spray Tan?
This depends on how coarse your hair is and how much time you have until your spray tan appointment.
DARK HAIR: If you have very coarse or dark hair, shave the night before your tan, it gives a chance for your pores to close up before the spray tan is applied so the tanning solution doesn’t settle into them resulting in little polka dots.
FAIR HAIR: If you are fair with light fine hair you can shave the morning of your spray tan. Just make sure to rinse with cool water to help close the pores after you are done shaving.
Can I shave an hour before a spray tan?
This is not recommended as your pores will not have time to close allowing the sunless tanner to settle into the open pores causing black dots or what we call strawberry legs.
How to prevent Strawberry legs or black dots when using a sunless tanner
This is caused when you shave or wax too close to the time of your spray tan appointment. Or shave right before you apply self-tan at home.
Tips for preventing self-tanner dark spots on legs:
Shave in the direction of the hair growth. I know that you won’t get as close of a shave but it will leave the hair follicles closed preventing your tanner from settling into the pores.
Rinse your legs with cold water after shaving to close the pores. tanning can help reduce strawberry legs as warmth can open the pores.
Use a fresh razor.
Exfoliate before hair removal.
Moisturise after hair removal.
Wait 24-48 hours after shaving for your hair to grow a bit and fill in the follicle and for your skin to settle down and the pores to close.

Shaving After Your Spray Tan
Does spray tan come off when you shave?
Yes, shaving does exfoliate the skin, so if shave AFTER your spray tan there are a few tricks to remember:
WAIT 24 HOURS after getting your spray tan to shave. USE A NEW RAZOR. The old razor is dull and will drag on your skin taking your tan off with it. This isn’t going to make anyone happy so go grab a fresh one so it can glide along without dragging against your skin as much. DON’T USE SHAVING FOAM. Shaving products often have ingredients that can damage your tan. Alcohol and heavy detergents can dry and strip your tan away. In a pinch use your conditioner or a sulfate-free, shower wash so you are not applying harsh products to your freshly sprayed tan. Or grab one of the sunless tan-safe shaving lotions that I list in my shopping guide. If your razor has a moisturizing strip make sure that you are rinsing all that product off your skin too. PRO TIP: Never dry shave. LIGHT TOUCH. Don’t press hard when you are shaving. Let the razor glide along your skin gently so that you are not taking off the tan when you shave. Try not to shave daily after your spray tan if you can help it. The more often you are shaving the faster you will fade out your color. Do NOT wax after your spray tan as it will remove your sunless tan. Please do all waxing at least 48 hours BEFORE your spray tan appointment.
You CAN have bronzy smooth skin if you follow these spray tan tips for shaving after your spray tan!
And as always, following up with a good moisturizer or sunless glow creme can help to keep your color longer.
Shaving Tips For Men
When it comes to my male clients getting their spray tan applied we need to have a quick conversation about your shaving routine.
You are shaving your face and/or head so if we mess this up it’s gonna show.
My questions are:
How often do you shave?
Do you use a blade or electric?
Are you using any pre-shave products or after-shave products?
First, shave your face and/or head before you come in for your spray tan appointment.
This gives me a clean palate to start with.
To allow the spray tan to fully develop, please wait at least 24 hours before shaving.
Skip the pre-shave products as they have ingredients in them that will break down your tan.
Don’t use a foam-based shaving product. These have alcohol and detergents in them that will break down your tan.
Do use a plain alcohol-free lotion after you shave to soothe and hydrate your skin and keep your tan moisturized.
Don’t shave daily if you can help it.
Using an electric razor is more gentle to your spray tan than a blade helping it to last longer.
