10 oz American Gold Eagle Coins For Sale

Gold Eagle Obverse Design

The obverse of the American Gold Eagle features Augustus St. Gaudens’ iconic Lady Liberty design, a full-length figure striding forward confidently from the rays of the rising sun and the nation’s capital dome, with her hair and robe flowing freely in the breeze. Her right holds the touch of freedom to light the way while holding an olive branch in her left hand signifying peace. Surrounded by 50 stars to signify the 50 United States with the inscription “LIBERTY” at the top and both the date of issue and mint mark in the lower right. A ‘W’ mintmark indicates its production at the U.S. Mint’s facility in West Point, New York.

Gold Eagle Reverse Design

The reverse side features the namesake of the coin, American Eagles. Designed by the American sculptor, then Miley Busiek, now Miley Tucker-Frost, in 1986. The image features a family of nesting bald eagles. The male bald eagle is soaring above the nest clutching an olive branch in its talons. The female eagle awaits with her young, vigilantly standing guard over the young hatchlings in the nest with her wings protectively encircling two eaglets, representing the importance and strength of the family. The reverse inscriptions read, “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” at the top of the coin. The Mottos, “IN GOD WE TRUST,’ is on the right, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM, Latin for “out of many, one,” is on the left. The coin specifications are at the bottom with the face value and weight of the coin. This combination of a classic and modern coin design has proven to be a winner. Since its release in 1986, the American Gold Eagle instantly became one of the most popular gold coins in the world and has retained this original, iconic design for over 32 years.

The American Gold Eagle Series

American Gold Eagle coins are the official gold coin of the United States since 1986 and are legal tender. These stunning gold coins are an American icon globally, proudly displaying the nation’s most iconic symbols, from the national emblem of the American Bald Eagle to Lady Liberty striding towards freedom, as a reminder of the majesty, longevity, and strength of the United States. Authorized under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 to compete with world bullion coins such as the Canadian Maple Leaf, the South African Krugerrand, and others. Today, the American Eagle gold coin is a leading gold bullion Internationally and is one of the most popular choices with investors and collectors around the world. Minted annually since 1986, there are several popular versions and four different weights. Besides the standard bullion coin, versions include proof, burnished uncirculated, and reverse proof coins. The one-tenth ounce (1/10 oz) has a face value of $5 and weighing 3.93 grams. The other three weights are a one ounce (1 oz.) size with a face value of $50 and weighing a hefty 33.931 grams; a half-ounce (1/2 oz), with a face value of twenty-five dollars, weighing 16.966 grams; a quarter ounce (1/4 oz) with a face value of $10 weighing 8.483 grams. Each gold coin contains 91.67% gold (22 karats), and contains an alloy of 3% silver and 5.33% copper to help increase the stability and scratch-resistance of the coins. By law, each coin is guaranteed to contain an exact quantity of gold, which is mined exclusively in the United States from newly mined sources in America, and to meet the rigid quality standards of the U.S. Mint. The market value of these gold coins is tied to the value of their gold content, not face value, and it fluctuates with market forces based on the current spot price of gold. However, there is a strong market for collector versions and low mintages, which carry a higher premium than their bullion counterparts. American Eagle gold coins have a U.S. Government guarantee of accurate precious metal content, weight, and purity. Additionally, they are legal tender. Since they are available in four denominations, in several finish varieties, spanning the last 32 years, they sell at a variety of price points.

American Eagle Gold Proof Coin

American Eagle Gold Proof Coins are collector versions of the official United States Mint bullion coins produced since 1986. They are available in four sizes: one ounce, one-half ounce, one-quarter ounce, and one-tenth ounce. All American Eagle Gold Proof Coins contain 91.67 percent (22-karat) gold. The gold weight and diameter will vary with each coin denomination, as specified below. The coins are minted at the U.S. Mint at West Point bearing the “W” mint mark.

The obverse features the figure of Liberty used on the gold coins since 1986. The design is inspired by Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ celebrated 1907 $20 gold piece, the “Double Eagle.” In 2021, the Mint marked the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Coin Program with an updated designs. The Mint used historical assets such as the original bronze cast to closer reflect Saint-Gaudens’ original vision. The refresh includes modifications to the Capitol Building, stars, torch, sun rays, and other design elements.

Since 2021, the reverse shows a portrait of an eagle. To give the new coins an added level of security, they have also been updated with enhanced security features, including a reeded edge variation.

From 1986 to 2021, the reverse, by sculptor Miley Busiek, depicted an eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a second eagle and hatchlings.

In 2020, the U.S. Mint produced a special End of World War II 75th Anniversary American Eagle Gold Proof Coin featuring a “V75” privy mark. The outline of the privy mark represents the shape of the Rainbow Pool at the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC.

5 More Tips for Understanding Weights and Measures

A few weeks ago, I realized that I have pretty much zero intuition about how much a gram weighs. I know—kind of tragic, right?

Nope, not tragic at all. In fact, I see it as an opportunity, because whenever I stumble upon something like this that I don’t know, I’m a fan of figuring it out.

So, if you’re at all like me and are not exactly sure just how heavy grams, ounces, pounds, stones, and tons are, then you’re in luck! Because that’s exactly what we’ll be talking about today.

Tip 1: Grams and Paper Clips

Let’s kick things off by clearing up my, perhaps your, and certainly everybody else’s uncertainty about exactly how much 1 gram weighs. As we’ve learned in a discussion of mass versus weight, I’ve actually confused the issue a bit in the previous sentence by proclaiming the gram to be a measure of weight—of course, it’s more properly dubbed a measure of mass. So, with that in mind, how much mass is 1 gram?

1 gram is about the mass of a metal paperclip.

The quick and dirty comparison to keep in your head is that 1 gram is about the mass of a metal paperclip. Or, if you prefer, it’s about the mass of a US dollar bill. As these comparisons show, 1 gram isn’t much mass at all—at least by everyday standards. Although if you’re a proton, you’d actually think that 1 gram is a huge mass, since a proton’s mass is only about 1 trillion trillionth of a gram.

The gram is the fundamental unit of mass in the metric system, but you’ll often hear masses measured in kilograms, too. A kilogram is simply 1,000 grams, which turns out to be pretty close to the mass of a pair of soccer balls.

Tip 2: Ounces and Pencils

As you’ll remember from last week’s show about the units we use to measure volume, the word “ounce” can refer to either a volume or a mass measurement. As we learned, the volumey kind of ounce is actually called the “fluid ounce,” so there really isn’t all that much cause for confusion.

As we also learned, the quick and dirty way to think about ounces is to know that a pencil and an empty soda can each weigh about 0.5 oz., and a tennis ball weighs about 2 oz. If you want a more direct comparison, a slice of normal sandwich bread has a mass of roughly 1 ounce.

Ounces are the primary unit of mass used in the U.S. and a few other parts of the world—i.e., everywhere that isn’t metric. If you’re wondering how an ounce compares to a gram, it turns out that 1 ounce is a lot more mass than 1 gram. In fact, 1 ounce is approximately equal to 28.35 grams.
