How Many Hours in a Year Are There? [In-Depth Guide]

Can you tell me how many hours you spend working each year? The question of how many hours in a year there are is more than just idle curiosity. For a lot of people, it’s very important to how they get paid and how they work. Here, we’re going to make sure you have no doubts as to how many hours and even minutes there are in a year, regardless of what calendar you go by and whether it’s a regular year, leap year, or topical year.

Aside from going over the crucial facts that answer the question, we’re going to look at the definitions of different calendar years and clear up a few questions people have about it, too, such as how many hours in a week and workdays in a month there are.

How Many Hours Are in a Year?

In order to answer the question of how many hours there are in a year, we need to be specific about which kind of year we are talking about. Most of the world uses the Gregorian calendar. In this calendar, there are 365 days on a common year (or mean year,) and 366 days every leap year. To be technical, there are 365.2425 days every year in the Gregorian calendar, but we use leap years every four years to convert it and make it easy to follow.

Each day has 24 hours, so the conversion ratio is simple:

Every Common Year : 24 hours x 365 days = 8,760 hours

24 hours x 365 days = 8,760 hours Every Leap Year: 24 hours x 366 days: 8,784 hours

There is also what is referred to as the tropical year, or the Sidereal year, which is how long, specifically, it takes the sun to make its way back to the same position relative to the cycle of the seasons, as experienced from the earth. How many hours are in a year for this type? This year is 365 days 5 hours 48 minutes 46 seconds, or 8765.82 hours. Of course, this measurement isn’t commonly used.

There is also the Julian calendar, which was the calendar used from roughly 46 BC to 1582. It is quite similar to the Gregorian calendar but, while the Gregorian calendar has 665.2425 days a year, the Julian calendar has 365.25 days a year. The Julian calendar had the same number of hours per common year and leap year, the Gregorian calendar is just more specific to make leap years more accurate.

Did you know: the Julian year is named after Julius Caesar, who first made it official in 46 BC, while the Gregorian Calendar is named after Pope Gregory XIII, who announced the calendar reforms for all of Catholic Christendom. As such, it has borne his name ever since.

How Many Minutes in a Year Are There?

There are 60 minutes for each hour, meaning that you simply need to multiply the number of days per year to find out how many minutes a year there is. As such:

Common year : 8,760 hours x 60 minutes per hour = approximately 525,600 minutes

8,760 hours x 60 minutes per hour = approximately 525,600 minutes Leap yea r: 8,784 hours x 60 minutes per hour = approximately 527,040 minutes

8,784 hours x 60 minutes per hour = approximately 527,040 minutes Tropical year: 8765.82 hours x 60 minutes per hour = approximately 525,949 minutes

Did you know: the division of an hour up into 60 minutes comes from Babylonians, who used a sexagesimal system (divide by six) for all their math and astronomy.

That’s how much time has passed since I first walked through the doors of 888 Brannan St. San Francisco for the first time as a new employee. What a 2 years it has been for us all during this timespan. The last time I stepped through those same doors was just over a year ago after the start of the pandemic lockdowns. It’s not lost on me that it was 2 years ago this day, April 1st, affectionately known as April Fools Day, that I started my journey at Airbnb. Shoutout to my April Fools Batch colleagues as it’s been anything but this namesake day during this time here.

It was during my first day of “Check-In,” new hire onboarding training over a full week of all day training and immersion into the Airbnb culture, that I learned that Airbnb wasn’t a memorable company name with a capital “BnB” at the end of it, which implies a capitalized uppercase “Air” | “Bed & Breakfast” but instead it’s a lowercase “bnb,” rounding out the origin story as “Airbed” & breakfast.” It was those useful Air beds and a side of breakfast that started off this global cultural movement so many years ago. My mind was blown and what I thought I knew coming in would be challenged for the good every day since.

In the Zoom meeting and remote working world we live in today, many mornings my teams and colleagues ask me “how are you doing?” as we start a meeting, and I occasionally will quip back with the phrase, “living the dream.” This response is met with some smiles and is both ‘tongue and cheek’ and also absolutely true. The past two years have been quite the rollercoaster to say the least. From our Airbnb business dropping 80% over night when the virus became a global pandemic, to some of the most difficult professional decisions and actions I had to be a part of, to an exciting and unexpected IPO in a company that has disrupted the travel industry – my naturally dark hair has much more peppering of white than when I first started.

During the past 2 years, there have been countless experiences and memories that come to mind when I sit back and reflect and all of these memories come flooding in at once. I have learned many things these past 2 years at Airbnb, but the following five learnings (I have several more, but will save them for another day) have really become relevant to me and hopefully will help you as you go on with your day.

Lesson 1: Focus on what we can control

One of the most simple and powerful learnings I’ve picked up during my career has become even more relevant recently is to truly focus on what I can control. There arguably hasn’t been a more opportune time in history than the past year to embrace this learning. What has Covid-19 taught us? That a virus that is imperceptible to the human eye can create havoc with people’s lives and literally change the world seemingly overnight. Imagine trying to control all the events happening around the world this past year and taking all that stress and anxiety onto yourself. You’d be a mess and you’d never be able to get a good night’s rest with anxiety all the time. If you try to focus on what you can really control – how you show up with your colleagues in meetings (on Zoom calls of course), your time management throughout the day, your calendar – the world, your work and you would be very different. Give it a try – it’s easy to say and incredibly hard to do, but you’ll feel like something’s been lifted off of your shoulders.

Lesson 2: Intentional vs accidental strategy

I’ve been using this phrase more frequently in recent months. Airbnb is at an incredible inflection point as a company as a tween ready to become a teenager and then an adult as a company. We are learning to take what has made us successful the first 12+ years and figure out how we go to the next level as a company. For my Product team and I, we need to form a point of view and define a product strategy in support of our business objectives. We are undergoing a major transformation across people, process, and product and during this journey it can seem like we’re just moving forward without a complete plan. Many times organizations, companies or individuals don’t define an actual strategy and wonder why a few years later, there is too much complexity in how the organization works. The process becomes the way things work vs. understanding why we’re existentially here and what we’re trying to achieve together. If we look more broadly and be explicit about what our intentional strategy is to achieve the outcomes we’re trying to reach, things become much more clear and significantly more simplified. Try to have an intentional strategy vs. an accidental one and it’ll just all make more sense.

Lesson 3: A rising tide will lift all boats

This is another classic phrase that I’ve leveraged over the past few years during my time at Airbnb. The original example comes from a boat dock where the tide comes through and the boats ride the wave up along with everything else. In our work, this can happen when positive information or support comes to a team, it can lift everyone’s mood around. This has been challenging in the remote work world, but it still happens regularly at Airbnb. What I’ve seen that is an interesting twist on this phenomenon is when the rising tide is an individual or a group of people on a team. When there is alignment and clarity on why we’re working on something particular or an individual who drives collaboration across teams outside of their immediate area – these individuals can be that rising tide that lifts everyone else around them. I’ve seen several examples of this with the amazing people and teams we have at Airbnb. These catalysts make everyone around them better and truly care about what they are doing and what impact they can make for our Community. Real question – How can you be a rising tide on your team this week?

Lesson 4: We can do anything but we can’t do everything

A new phrase my boss recently shared with the team and I has really struck a chord. It’s a refreshed take on an age old challenge of focusing on fewer priorities. If everything is a priority, nothing really is a priority. As Product Managers and leaders at Airbnb, my team and I are asked to prioritize new work all the time which is natural for a growing company disrupting the industry. Isn’t it amazing how everything seems to be a P0 or P1 priority? When you combine these asks with individuals who love to help others solve problems you get an organic recipe of saying ‘yes’ to many things. Not all things can be done well as there is a limited supply of engineers and resources to do it all effectively. Sharing a mindset that we can do anything but focusing on the critical few will set us up for success for the longer term. We can avoid individual burnout, unneeded stress and lower quality products but still compete fiercely in the market for a need that has accelerated by many years oddly enough during the global pandemic. At Airbnb, we were forced to slow down or shut down parts of our business when the Pandemic became global last year. As our up and down start of the year in 2020 suddenly turned around unexpectedly last summer during our traditional “peak” season our business came roaring back with domestic stays and destinations within 0-500 miles of major cities. People long to travel and we are in a great position to support this new world of safe and responsible travel. To do this right, we need to continue to build the muscle to focus on the things that matter the most now. We are the only ones who can get in our own way.

Lesson 5: Belonging is personal

Belonging is an interesting word and very personal to each individual and especially to me. When I think of the word “Belonging,” I get warm fuzzies all around and words such as familiar, comfortable, family, or home come to mind. Belonging is that feeling you get when you’re around friends or family who you care about and you know care about your well being. Belonging has been a word that has been challenged in recent times by the many events that have just happened in the last year and most recently in the news with many unfortunate events. Black Lives Matter, AAPI Hate incidents, countless other discriminatory issues have seemingly flooded our already hurt world, only exacerbated by the global pandemic all around. For me, as a Leader at a Silicon Valley tech disruptor who has a passion for companies and roles that have the opportunity to impact more than individuals lives, but instead can bring good to everyone, Belonging is an important part of what I look for in a job, in a company, in founders and fellow leaders and teammates around me. During my 2 years at Airbnb, it’s no April Fools Joke that I can say I feel like I absolutely Belong here. I can leverage my experiences, my relationships, my knowledge, my skills to help my teams and colleagues around me as we all lock arms together to solve complex problems for our Community. To better the Airbnb Community and its tight ecosystem of guests and hosts who invite people into their homes, into their cities, into their shared experiences. It’s been a wild ride these past 2 years, and every single moment, even in the toughest of times. I feel like I am at home. I feel like I Belong.

To my family. Thank you for your absolute support for me every single day. I love you with all my heart.

To Aisling, Brent, Ari, Tara, Tina, CSP, my CS leadership peers, incredible colleagues, friends across Airbnb. I’m looking forward to all we are are going to accomplish together to create a world where anyone can feel like they Belong. To Brian, Nate and Joe. Thank you for creating a company that is bigger than any one individual and allows us all to Belong.

Thank you all for an amazing 2 years. Here’s to the next 20.
