“Real Fact” #45 and #46

“Real Fact” #45: “Elephants are capable of swimming 20 miles per day.”

OH SNAP!

This Snapple “Real Fact” is TRUE! Yes, believe it or not, elephants are capable of swimming 20 miles per day! Now someone might wonder how they hold their breath for that long or how they don’t get tired. Let’s look at the fact again, it says they are CAPABLE of swimming 20 miles per day, no one said they actually do! Elephants aren’t really known for swimming besides while getting water or on a hot day but when they do feel like going for a nice relaxing 20 mile swim, they use their trunks as snorkels! And they’re pretty good at it too! Elephants are actually excellent swimmers. Researchers once observed a family of elephants swimming, and they covered almost 30 miles at speeds of 1.7 miles per hour! Now that’s pretty fast for the worlds largest land animal.

Apparently, this little guy wasn’t up for the 20 miles that day!

“Real Fact” #46: “Elephants are the only mammals that cannot jump.”

OH SNAP!

This Snapple “Real Fact” is FALSE and yet adorable! It is true that elephants cannot jump but other mammals cant jump either! These mammals cant jump due to the fact that they lack knee caps. Another reason why is because the bones in an elephants foot are packed more closely together compared to other mammals meaning that they lack the flexibility and spring mechanisms to jump! However, rhinos and hippos are misjudged for jumping because they, unlike elephants, can have all four feet off the ground at one time. What I found interesting about this fact is that sloths cant jump either! Now, I know sloths are known for being lazy but they are built to be lazy too!

Hope you found this video as adorable as I did! Thanks for reading all about elephants!

Can elephants swim?

Swimming comes naturally to many animals. One animal that many people do not think can swim are elephants. People believe that they are unable to swim due to their enormous size. However, African and Asian elephants are some of the few mammals that have learned how to swim.

Although these animals do not use swimming to catch prey, they rely on swimming for an excellent reason. Our South African elephant conservation team wants to share with you how elephants are able to swim and why they do it.

Can elephants swim?

Contrary to popular belief, elephants, in fact, can swim. Although African elephants can weigh up to 2.5 to 7 tons, these mammals are natural swimmers. How are elephants able to swim? Their body mass plays an important part in keeping them afloat. It gives them enough buoyancy to float and submerge underwater if needed.

As elephants use their feet for swimming, they keep their face above water and keep their mouth below. Elephants use their trunks as a snorkel to breathe underwater. This allows them to swim for long periods of time without needing to completely emerge from the water.

How far can an elephant swim for?

Elephants like to keep moving no matter where they are. On land, elephants walk on average, 25 km (about 15 and a half miles) per day. However, if needed, elephants walk up to 195 km. When elephants are in the water, they can also rank up some major miles. They are able to swim up to 480 km – that is about 300 miles.

When do elephants learn to swim?

Although elephants are natural swimmers, they do not know how to swim as babies. South African elephant conservation researchers found that baby elephants (calves) do not learn how to swim until they are several months old. The mother elephants will stay with them when they are near water.

Baby elephants like to play in the water, and this helps them learn how to use their trunks. When elephants are very young, they do not know how to control their trunks. Many times they bend down their heads to drink water instead of using their trunks.

Why do elephants swim?

You are probably wondering why elephants even need to swim? Elephants do not swim to catch a meal but to stay cool. These massive animals live in locations that have very warm temperatures like the African savannas and Asian forests. Elephants do not sweat, so they need a way to cool their huge bodies.

They regulate their body temperatures through rolling in mud or taking a swim. How does this work? When an elephant gets into water or mud, they store that material in their skin. This helps their bodies stay cool, protects them from the sun and keeps parasites away. That is one of the reasons why you tend to see elephants around watering holes.

Can Elephants swim? They even swim underwater!

Elephants are known to be big and bulky animals. Many people think that they cannot move or swim very well because of just that, their size. However, elephants are excellent swimmers and capable of crossing rivers and even swimming underwater!

The largest ever recorded elephant swim was over 22 miles long and took place in India. The elephant trunk serves as a snorkel while they’re swimming, this helps them to breathe while they are underwater.

While most elephants live on land, there are some that live in swampy areas. These elephants have webbed feet that help them to swim through the water.

Elephants are amazing creatures and it is fascinating to learn about all of the things they can do! It is clear that they are not limited by their size, but rather, they are able to use their abilities to adapt to their environment and survive.

Read on for more amazing facts about why elephants can swim.

Elephants are born swimmers

Elephants are pretty much born swimmers! However, they need to learn how to use their trunk as a snorkel in order to breathe while swimming. A South African elephant conservation researcher center found that baby elephants (calves) did not learn how to swim until they were a couple of months old. The elephant’s mother will stay with them when they are near water until they are ready. It’s the motherly instinct of mammals, very similar to the human behaviour.

It is interesting to note that elephants are the only mammal that can float without any floating devices. This is due to their natural buoyancy.

How do Elephants swim?

Elephants typically swim using somewhat of a breaststroke. For us humans, this will be comparable to a “doggy swim” type of stroke rather than a clean human breaststroke.

The elephants four legs are used to propel them through the water. Their legs are so powerful that they can swim continuously for as long as six hours! An elephant’s head and torso are generally kept just below the surface of the water as it paddles its massive limbs back and forth on a typical swim.

As mentioned, however, keep its strong trunk raised above the water and use it as a sort of snorkel to allow it to breathe even while the rest of its body remains in the water.
