The length of your piercing jewelry refers to the wearable length of the barbell that goes through your piercing. It is measured from the top to the bottom of the straight barbell and does not include the balls or charms.

How do you know what size your piercing is?

As long as you are wearing the correct gauge of jewelry in your piercing, just use a caliper to measure how thick (big around) your jewelry is. You cannot measure gauge accurately with a ruler. If you do not have a caliper ask your piercer for help.

Is 16 or 18 gauge bigger?

Gauge is the standard unit of measure for sheet steel and wire products. The lower the number, the thicker the steel. Therefore, 16 gauge is thicker than 18 gauge steel.

Is 14G or 16G bigger?

Small gauges will have a thinner bar but a larger number (like 20G), and large gauges will have a thicker bar but a smaller number (like 14G).

16G .050″ 1.2mm
14G .064″ 1.6mm
12G .082″ 2.0mm

Is 20g smaller than 18G?

20 Gauge is thinner than 18G and is the standard most popular size. If you are unsure this would be your best choice. 22 Gauge is the thinnest size post and perfect for those who normally wear silver nose jewelry, from jewelry stores such as Claires (the majority of their silver nose jewelry comes in thinner gauges).

Which is bigger 16 or 18 gauge piercing?

“Here [in the U.S.] it’s measured by gauge.” Gauge sizes work in reverse, meaning that the higher the number, the thinner the width. So higher numbers (like 16 gauge) are thinner than smaller numbers (like a 6 gauge). When discussing gauges, references to a “larger gauge” means bigger around, not a bigger number.

Choosing the Correct Size of Body Piercing Jewellery

How Do I Choose The Correct Gauge?

There are standard gauges associated with the most common types of piercing. For example, navel piercings are created using a 1.6mm gauge needle (this means that the needle is 1.6mm thick). So, all the belly bars that you see for sale (whether on the internet or on the high street) have a gauge of 1.6mm – that’s the thickness of the curved section which sits inside your piercing. Likewise for tongue bars, nipple bars, nipple rings and nipple shields – they are all 1.6mm gauge (regardless of the shape). Cartilage (ear) piercings are commonly created with a gauge of 1.2mm gauge, although some are created with a gauge of 1mm. It depends on your piercer, the location of your piercing and often your own personal preference. Lip piercings can be either 1.2mm or 1.6mm gauge, the same with eyebrow piercings. Nose piercings are commonly created with a 1mm needle, although again this can vary (0.8mm and 1.2mm can also be used for nose piercings).

Ear lobe tunnels and plugs are also measured by the gauge. A 10mm plug will fit into an ear lobe piercing which has been stretched to a diameter of 10mm. The same 10mm plug will fall out of a 16mm ear lobe piercing, and you won’t be able to insert it into an 8mm ear lobe piercing because the plug will be too large.

Ear stretchers (tapers, expanders) also use the word ‘gauge’ to refer the thickness of the jewellery – specifically at the widest end of the stretcher. When you see a 6mm stretcher for sale, the thickest end will measure 6mm in diameter (the thinnest end, in comparison, might have a diameter of 1mm or 2mm). If your ear lobe piercing is currently 5mm and you want to stretch it to 6mm, you would need to buy a 6mm stretcher. You would begin by inserting the thinnest end into your piercing and then pushing it through slowly. When the 6mm end is sitting comfortably in your piercing, you will have successfully achieved a 6mm piercing – the diameter of your piercing hole will be 6mm. Don’t go pushing the stretcher through quickly though – very important! We have a ton of advice and tips in our Ear Stretching Guide – it’s an absolute must-read for every new stretching enthusiast.

Standard Piercing Sizes

Here you will find some information on the basics of sizing for the most common types of body piercing. This is intended to help new comers in choosing the correct size of body jewelry. Please keep in mind, when you are initially pierced you are pierced with a longer piece of jewelry to allow for swelling and to aid in the healing process. The sizes listed below are for healed piercings.

These are the standard sizes used for each piercing in body jewelry. Please note that we cannot guarantee that this is the size used for YOUR piercing. These are the standard gauges and lengths used by most professional piercers. Everyone’s body is different, and sometimes piercers will use different lengths and gauges depending on your body. Please go to our Measuring Tab to learn how to measure Body Jewelry so you can choose the correct gauge and length for your piercing.

BELLY – NAVEL

Thickness / Diameter: 14 Gauge (1.6mm)

Length: 3/8″ or7/16″ (10mm or 11mm)

Jewelry: Bent Barbells, Spirals, Circular Barbells, CBR’s

The standard navel jewelry is 14ga. Very few piercers will pierce a navel with a 12 gauge needle unless requested. The most common size jewelry for a healed navel is 3/8 inch or 7/16 inch. The next size up is 1/2 inch if you prefer something longer. Since navel piercing is the most common piercing, it would only make sense that this should be the most versatile piece of jewelry. That is why we are one of the only company to offer the largest selection in Navel Jewelry. Since everyone is different, we have an endless amount of options you can choose from.

TONGUE

Thickness / Diameter: 14 Gauge (1.6mm)

Length: 5/8″ (16mm)

Jewelry: Straight Barbells

The most common gauge for a tongue piercing is 14ga. Once healed, the most common barbell length is a 5/8 inch. We offer all our Tongue jewelry in any gauge from 14ga, 12ga, 10ga all the way up to 1/2 inch. It is recommended to wear jewelry that fits perfect in your tongue. Too long of a barbell will knock on your gums and teeth and will eventually damage them. If for any reason you feel your tongue jewelry creates too much friction with your gums or teeth, IMMEDIATELY replace your jewelry with something shorter. Too short of a barbell could result in the tongue healing over the balls. Keep in mind; you are pierced with a longer post (usually 7/8″) to allow for swelling and to aid in the healing process. To avoid damaging your teeth and gums, you should switch to a shorter length barbell when the swelling goes down.

EYEBROW

Thickness / Diameter: 16 Gauge (1.2mm)

Length: 5/16″ or 3/8″ (8mm or 10mm)

Jewelry: CBR’s, Bent, Straight, Circular Barbells

The most common gauges for an eyebrow piercing are either 16ga or 14ga, with 16ga being the most common. Typical ring diameters and curved barbell lengths are 5/16 inch, 3/8 inch, and 7/16 inch.

LABRET & MONROE

Thickness / Diameter: 14 Gauge or 16 Gauge (1.6mm or 1.2mm)

Length: 5/16″ or 3/8″ (8mm or 10mm)

Jewelry: Labrets, Circular Barbells, CBR’s, Spirals

Labret usually refers to a piercing that is below the bottom lip, above the chin. The most common gauges for a labret piercing are 16ga or 14ga. The thickness of your lips should determine the length of your labret. The most common length is 3/8 inch but 5/16 inch and 7/16 inch are common as well. Labret and Monroe can also be used for Cartilage rings.

NIPPLE

Thickness / Diameter: 14 Gauge or 16 Gauge (1.6mm or 1.2mm)

Length: 5/8″ or 3/4″ (16mm or 19mm)

Jewelry: Circular Barbells, CBR’s, Straight Barbells

The most common gauge for a cartilage piercing is 16ga with a length of 5/16 inch and 1/4 inch. Tragus Barbell, CBR (Captive Bead Rings) and Horseshoes can also be used as Cartilage rings.

CARTILAGE

Thickness / Diameter: 16 Gauge

Length: 1/4″ or 5/16″ (6mm or 8mm)

Jewelry: Labret, Circular Barbell, CBR, Straight Barbell

The most common gauge for a ear cartilage piercing is 16ga with a length of 1/4 or 5/16 inch. Tragus, Barbell, CBR (Captive Bead Ring) and horseshoe can also be used as cartilage rings.

TRAGUS / HELIX

Thickness / Diameter: 16 Gauge (1.2mm)

Length: 1/4″ (6mm)

Jewelry: Labrets, Circular Barbells, CBR’s, Straight Barbells

The most common gauge for Tragus and Helix piercing is 16ga with a length of 1/4 inch. CBR (Captive Bead Rings), Labrets, and horseshoes can also be used for Tragus and Helix rings.

INDUSTRIAL

Thickness / Diameter: 14 Gauge

Length: 1-1/2″, 1-3/8″, 1-1/4″

Jewelry: Industrial Barbells, Straight Barbells

The most common gauge for a cartilage piercing is 14ga with a length of 1 & 1/4 inch and 1 & 3/8 inch, and 1 & 1/2 inch. We also carry 1 & 5/8 inch. Barbells can also be used for Industrial Piercings.

EAR

Ear lobe piercing is one of the most popular kinds of ear piercing. If you got your ears pierced by a gun, you’ve never stretched your hole(s), your jewelry gauge is 20 or 18. If you were pierced with a needle the gauges most commonly range from 16-10, most likely being 14. Various kinds of ear piercing jewelry suits ear lobe piercing, including Labrets, Captive Bead Rings, straight and curved Barbells, Segment rings, Plugs, and many more…

CBR (CAPTIVE BEAD RINGS) / HORSESHOES

CBR (Captive Bead Rings) and Horseshoes are the most versatile body piercing jewelry available. It can be worn virtually with any body piercings. Helix Size Guide

Finding your perfect helix hoop size depends on a couple of factors:

Hoops:

Hoops can be worn in healed helix piercings, with the size you require depending on your anatomy and also personal preference. If your piercing is closer to the edge of the ear and you like a close fitting hoop, then a smaller inner diameter will be best for you. Always make sure there is at least 1-2mm space between your skin and the jewellery otherwise a hoop which is too tiny can cause discomfort and irritation.

Bars:

As a helix is typically one of the first cartilage piercings most people get, labrets and barbells are commonly used in this area of the ear. The bar length you need will depend on your skin thickness and piercing location, recommended lengths are usually 6mm or 8mm. For a short and snug fit, we recommend a 6mm length, if you have thicker cartilage or prefer to leave a bit of space either side then an 8mm may be better suited.

It’s usually a process of trial and error to find your perfect fit, however we always recommend visiting your local piercing studio who carried out your piercing as they will be able to measure your ear and offer some professional advice.
