This means that in a standard US half gallon there are 64 flu ounces. This answer is: … You might think the answer is 64 ounces, since a true gallon is 128, but ice cream has fallen subject to the same downsizing as so many other consumer packaged goods. Think of “Half Gallons” as a sub-category used to separate items from “Pints” and “Novelty” within the larger category of “Ice Cream.” Now, most items in the Half Gallon category have been downsized to 56 or 48 ounces, though this has provided an opportunity for others to advertise that their half gallons are actual 64 oz half gallons. Will ice cream makers ever return to half-gallon containers?

GRAND RAPIDS — As we celebrate National Ice Cream month, it’s time to mourn the loss of half-gallon containers of ice cream.

Once the symbol of summer fun, this product has all but melted away from store freezer shelves.

This summer marks the second year that local favorite Hudsonville Creamery & Ice Cream Co. has delivered its flavors in 56-ounce containers. It’s equal to 1.75 quarts — 12 1/2 percent less than the 64-ounce half-gallon container.

But Hudsonville tubs still are bigger than its national competitors, including Green Bay, Wisconsin-based Breyers, which has the biggest slice of the U.S. market. The brand’s containers have shrunk to 48 ounces, or 1 1/2 quarts, in recent years.

Ice cream companies shrank their containers as the cost of raw ingredients and transportation rose. A smaller container offered an alternative to raising prices.

“Consumers notice price increases; they don’t as readily notice product size decreases,” said consumer advocate Edgar Dworsky, who has written about the topic on his blog, mouseprint.org, which exposes the strings and catches in advertising fine print.

“People end up buying ice cream more often,” said Dworsky. “It does really end up being a price increase because they make more purchases.”

These containers of ice cream sell for between $3 to $4 — less if on sale.

Has anybody been screaming about the loss of so many scoops?

Not exactly.

“Purchasing behavior hasn’t changed,” said Bruce Kratt, Hudsonville’s sales and marketing director. “Consumers either didn’t care or didn’t notice.”

That’s one of the reasons the Holland-based ice cream company gave into the industry’s shrinking trend, which began in 2006.

Its competitors were reinvesting their savings — from selling less ice cream — into promotion and marketing.

Hudsonville introduced its new packaging in early 2009, a “sqround” container with a separate lid that eliminated the “messy knuckles” from the ice-cream-coated flap of the traditional brick-shaped container.

Consumers liked the packaging. Kratt says Hudsonville didn’t receive any “significant backlash” because “I think people saw it as a much bigger container than what is out there.”

“We aren’t the biggest, but there is no one bigger,” Kratt said.

Tammi Shymanski is accustomed to the smaller containers, but she does find herself buying ice cream more often.

“We just have to keep replenishing,” said the Ada resident, who was grocery shopping with her boys Thad, 11, and Trent, 9, at the Knapp’s Corner Meijer on Wednesday.

Country Fresh — which has an office in Grand Rapids and is supplied by Michigan dairies for its local market — also sells its ice cream in 56-ounce containers. A spokesperson declined to comment for this story.

Meijer brand ice cream comes in 56-ounces brick and 5-quart tubs.

But Kratt doesn’t think the extra 8 ounces has necessarily helped Hudsonville take a bigger bite of the ice cream market. He credits that to the introduction of more flavors and additional marketing.

“I think the biggest thing that has helped us is it’s made in Michigan and tastes great. People want to support local products,” Kratt said.

The ice cream-maker buys its raw material from local dairies and cherries from Traverse City area farmers.

So will the original 64-ounce half-gallon container return?

Consumer advocate Dworsky thinks so.

If the ice cream container is downsized below its 48 ounces, Dworsky predicts someone will reintroduce the half-gallon.

“By that point, it will be double what you paid for it originally,” Dworsky said. “This is what was done with potato chips and candy bars.”

Calculating Ice Cream Quantities For Your Next EventKaleido Scoops

Ice cream is a versatile, easy to serve dessert for any type of party. One of the most important aspects of planning for a party is determining how much you need to serve each of your guests. There is no way to determine the exact amount your guests will eat, but there are ways to get a close estimate. The age of your guests, their typical appetite, and the amount of other refreshments you serve will all affect this estimate. Follow the simple calculations below and you should know the right amount of ice cream to purchase for your party.

Estimate the amount of ice cream

Make a list of the guests that will attend your event. Each guest will likely eat at least three scoops of ice cream, which translates to about 1 and a half cups. If you are planning a child’s party, two scoops is probably a more accurate estimate. Next, multiply the total number of scoops by 4 ounces, which is the average size of a scoop of ice cream. Ice cream for 15 guests would total 45 scoops or 180 ounces of ice cream.

Convert ounces to gallons

Now that you know how many ounces of ice cream you need, convert them to gallons. A true gallon consists of 128 ounces, although many containers labeled as a gallon only contain about 96 ounces. If you are unsure about the conversion for the brand you wish to purchase, simply keep the measurement as ounces. You can also purchase this dessert from an ice cream store to help you get the right amount.

Next, divide the amount of ice cream you need between the various flavors you want to serve. For example, if you are serving 15 people and you want to serve chocolate and vanilla, 90 ounces of each is sufficient. With this estimate, two gallons of each would be more than enough to satisfy your guests.

How Many Ounces in a Gallon

Are you wondering how many ounces in a gallon? It isn’t easy to remember how to convert liquid oz to a gallon or gallons to ounce. You’ll need to do a little basic math. But don’t worry, I’ve done it all for you, including a conversion chart!

Wondering how many oz in a gallon of water or liquid?

Have you ever wondered how many ounces in a gallon or half a gallon?

In this blog post, we will explore the different measurements that are used to measure volume, and what is a gallon.

You’ll also learn about how to convert between these Imperial and metric units of measurement!

Whether you’re cooking, doing science, or working on a project, sometimes you need to make some conversions.

I know how hard it can be when you’re cooking and your favorite recipe is written in Imperial, but you know Metric or vice versa.

Suddenly you might find that you’re racking your brain to remember how many oz in a gallon?

There isn’t a very straightforward answer, but don’t worry! I’ve done all the conversions and calculations for you.

Just keep scrolling down and I’ve done all the conversions for you!

I’ve also made a handy free printable (get it below) full of kitchen conversions! Just print it out and keep it with your cookbooks.

Ounces can be confusing, so I also have a handy guide if you’re wondering How Many Ounces in a Quart? Or How many cups in a pint, quart or gallon.

It might also help you to check out this guide to Imperial vs Metric.

What is a gallon?

A gallon is a measure of volume and fluid in both British Imperial units and US Customary units. Three significantly different sizes are in current use:

A gallon equals 4 quarts, 8 pints, or 128 fluid ounces.

Abbreviation for gallon: gal.

The word “gallon” has its roots in the latin word, “galleus” or “galena”, meaning container or large jar and was originally used as a measurement of wine production.

A commonly used volume measure in the United States is gallons. There are four quarts in a gallon and 128 fluid ounces in a gallon. A quart is made up of two pints or four cups, and there are three cups in a pint. One cup equals eight fluid ounces so one pint equals 16 fluid ounces.

The Imperial system uses the same measurements as the Metric system except that it doesn’t use liters instead it goes with gallons but they have different names like barrels (UK) or hogsheads (US).

For the purposes of this conversion, I’ll be using the US customary system.

What is an ounce?

An ounce is a unit of weight (dry ounce) or a unit of volume (fluid ounce).

A fluid ounce (fluid oz.) is a unit of measurement for both liquid and dry ingredients and is commonly used in cooking, baking, nutrition and pharmacies.

Abbreviation: fl oz, fl. oz., or oz. fl.

There are very slight differences in the conversions for Imperial or US Customary measurements.

US: 1 fluid ounce = 29.6 ml

UK: 1 fluid ounce = 28.4 ml

Ounces can be abbreviated to oz.

In recipes, you might also see fluid ounces abbreviated to fl oz.

A fluid ounce is a unit of liquid volume equal to ⅛th of a pint or 1/32nd of a quart.

General Conversions

To get started, here are the usual conversions for liquids:

USA conversion: 1 US fluid quart = 2 pints = 4 cups = 32 fluid ounces = 950 mililitres.

1 gallon = 4 quarts

UK conversion: 1 Imperial quart = 40 Imperial fluid ounces = 4+¾ cups = 1.13 litres.

1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 fluid ounces

Half gallon of water contains 64 US fluid ounces.

Mathematical Formula

To convert fluid ounces to gallons and vice versa, you need to divide the volume by the conversion ratio.

In order to convert from gallons into ounces, multiply your number by 128 (or divide it by 128 if you want the answer in ounces)

Fluid ounces in a gallon:

1 gallon = 128 fluid ounces, so the formula is:

x fluid ounces ÷ 128 = x gallons

Ounces to Gallons

1 US Fluid Ounce = 0.0078125 fluid gallon, so the formula is:

x gallons x 128 = x fluid ounces

In other words:

Convert fluid ounces to gallons = the oz x 128.

Convert gallons to ounces = the gallons ÷ 128.
