With the latest trend of selecting unique and unusual names, popular names are not as popular as they once were. The probability that parents inname their child, the top boys’ and girls’ names, is only. Twenty-five years ago the top boys’ and girls’ names were. Back then, a baby had aprobability of being given either name. In other words, a child born twenty-five years ago is over twice as likely to be given the current year’s top name than a child born today. While this trend away from the most popular names may be associated with the current generation of parents, it’s been occurring for far longer. Onlyof children born last year were given a name in the top ten. In comparison, twenty-five years agoof children would be given a name in the top ten, and 50 years ago that number was. A person born into our parents’ generation is nearly three times as likely to be given a top ten name than a person born into our kids’ generation. As someone who had two other ‘Sara’s (spelled differently) in her kindergarten class, I am fascinated that the probability of a kindergarten class of 35 in 2022 havingtwo children with the same name is only. The probability of a kindergarten class having three children with the same name? Just. That doesn’t mean it never happens. With so many kindergarteners in the US, we estimate approximatelykindergarten classes across the country will have three kids with the same name.

‘Sarah’ a top 10 baby name since 1801
Most baby names wax and wane in popularity over the years, but when it comes to staying power, the name Sarah is unmatched, at least in Ontario, according to the family-tree website Ancestry.ca.
The website tracked names back to when records were first kept in 1801 and found Sarah was the only name to consistently appear in the top 10 in Ontario.
In fact, for 133 years, between 1801 and 1934, Sarah was never out of the top 10 list of girls names.
During that same period the top five spots were occupied by Mary, Margaret, Marie, Annie and Elizabeth.
But flash forward to 2008, and those names have fallen well behind. Sarah, however, ranks No. 5.
For boys, the popular names of old have also been in retreat, but if there is a male equivalent to Sarah, it would be William.
Between 1801 and 1934, two of the top boy baby names were William and John.
In 2008, William was the 12th most common name, but John did not even crack the top 25.
Other common names from history that have not aged well include George, Albert, Frederick, Florence, Edith and Ethel.
The new trending baby names are Emma, Olivia and Emily for girls, and Ethan, Matthew and Joshua for boys.
Ancestry.ca has access to 126 million Canadian records, including the complete historical Canadian censuses from 1851 to 1916, as well as vital statistics from B.C. and Ontario, dating back to 1813.
