18 Dollars An Hour Is How Much A Year: Can You Live Off Of It? • Savvy Budget Boss

18 dollars an hour is how much a year? Calculate your annual, monthly, and weekly salary (before and after taxes) and determine whether you can actually live off of $18 an hour.

This post is a complete guide to making $18 an hour including how much you’ll earn per year, month, and week (before and after taxes). You’ll also discover the answer to “Can I live off $18 an hour?” We even include a sample budget to get you started. Finally, we break down the best jobs that earn 18 dollars an hour without a degree!

Let’s get to it.

18 Dollars an hour is how much a year

$18 an hour is $37,440 per year.

Here’s how we arrived at this number:

40 hours of work per week multiplied by 52 (the number of weeks in a year) equals 2,080 hours worked per year.

Multiply the total hours worked per year (2,080) by $18 to get $37,440. This is the amount you’ll make per year before taxes.

Working full-time

For the record, in America, if you work between 35-40 hours a week, you are considered a full-time employee.

Our calculations above are based on a 40-hour workweek multiplied by 52 weeks a year.

If you work 35 hours per week and earn $18 an hour, you will make $32,760 per year.

35 hours per week multiplied by 52 weeks in the year is 1,820 hours worked. If you multiply 1,820 by $18 an hour, you get $32,760.

Working part-time

Part-time is considered anything under 35 hours worked per week. Typically, part-time employees work between 20-29 hours a week.

If you work 25 hours per week at $18 an hour, you will earn $23,400 a year before taxes.

How much is 18 dollars an hour a year after taxes?

If you make $37,440 a year, you’ll pay 15.1% (on average) of your income in federal taxes, social security, and Medicare. You’ll pay even more if you live in a state that collects an income tax.

This brings your approximate annual take-home pay to $31,769 if you work full-time (40 hours per week) and about $20,473 a year if you work part-time (25 hours per week).

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room…

Can you live off of $18 an hour?

The US Census Bureau estimates that the annual median personal income for 2019 was $35,977. So, if you make $37,440 (or more) a year, you can consider yourself just above average (as far as earnings in America go).

The bright side is that a full-time job making $18 an hour would put you well above poverty guidelines ($12,750 a year) for a single individual.

Related: Can you live on $30 an hour?

That’s all well and good, but can you live (comfortably) on $18 an hour?

According to a recent study by Go Banking Rates you can’t.

Based on a recent survey they conducted, which took into account rising housing costs as well as basic living expenses, you’ll need to earn anywhere between $58,321 a year (to get by in Mississippi) all the way up to a minimum of $136,437 a year to get by in Hawaii.

I mean, really…who wants to live in Hawaii anyway?

I don’t know what kind of MATH their smoking because, up until recently, our family has never earned more than $50,000 a year…

In fact…

My husband and I lived on $40,000 ($19.23) an hour for years while raising our (3) children in Colorado (which has a state income tax), and somehow, we managed to survive.

We even bought a nice 3 bedroom 2 bath home on that salary which we later sold (in just 24-hours) for a tidy profit.

Currently, my son manages to live well on just $15 an hour, working part-time while living in a city with a high cost of living index.

Based on personal experience, if you are single, and live in an area with a low cost of living, you can live quite well on $18 an hour.

Can you buy a house making $18 an hour?

Mmmmm…MAYBE.

The answer to “can you buy a house when you make $18 an hour” is a tricky one that depends on a handful of factors.

For example, if you:

Have a healthy savings account

Know how to budget

Live in a low-cost of living area

Have a debt-to-income ratio <43% Then, yes, you can afford to buy a (modest) home on $37,400 a year. However, if you: Struggle to live on a budget Live in a city with a high cost of living index Have a debt-to-income ratio >43%

Work less than full-time

You cannot afford to buy a house on $18 an hour.

Tips to live on $18 an hour

As I mentioned earlier, my son lives well on $15 an hour in a big (expensive) city. Here’s how he does it:

With the exception of a small student loan (he does not have any debt) He keeps his food costs low He lives with a roommate He’s frugal and budgets his money wisely He lives on less than he earns

Ways to make more money if $18 an hour isn’t enough

If the tips above don’t appeal to you, there are a plethora of ways to increase your income if you find that $18 doesn’t quite get you the lifestyle of your dreams.

You can:

Gross vs Net

Net salary is an amount without income taxes and deductions for social security contributions. Overall, taxes and social security contributions are around 25% of the employee’s gross salary in the UK.

The most common income tax rate is 20%, and social security employees pay between 0% and 12% of their salary, depending on the level and class of income. Employers also pay a share.

British social insurance includes unemployment, sickness, disability, occupational accidents, occupational diseases, maternity, widowhood, and pensions.

In the UK, the so-called “pay as you earn” (PAYE) system applies when it comes to income taxes. The tax-free amount is £12,570 per year. Generally, there are three income tax rates (slightly different rates apply in Scotland):

20% – for annual salary between £12,570 and £50,270 40% – for annual salary between £50,271 and £150,000 45% – for annual salary above £150,001

Yet, the majority of people pay 20% in income tax and 12% in social security. This will leave someone with a gross annual income of £40,000 with £30,864 after taxes or £2,572 monthly.

You have paid £5,484 in income tax and £3,651 in National Insurance.

Moving to the UK? Here are top reasons why you shouldn’t come to the UK.

Housing

No surprise that rent is our biggest expense when moving abroad. It contributes to at least 30% of our monthly budget.

In London, the closer you are to the center, the higher the rent.

Renting a one-bedroom apartment close to the city center in London would cost you about £1,600 a month, but you can choose one outside the city center for about £1,100.

On the other hand, renting a family home costs about £3,100 a month on average in the city center and about £1,900 for one outside the center.

However, rents in other English cities are lower. For instance, in Manchester, you will get a one-bedroom apartment for about £700 a month.

Housing in London Average monthly cost One-bedroom apartment (city center) £1,662 One-bedroom apartment (outside of city center) £1,272 Three bedroom apartment (city center) £3,188 Three bedroom apartment (outside of city center) £2,081 Internet £32 Utilities (gas, electric, and water for an 85m2 apartment) £171 Council Tax £80 Source: wise.com

Consequently, more and more people are unable to afford to live in London. Hence they are moving to cities nearby. This fact has driven prices high in those cities as well. Thus, the cost of living in any town near London has skyrocketed.

Overall, the average rent for a small studio apartment in the UK is £708.

$28,000 a year is how much an hour?

$28,000 salary working 2,000 hours

As a simple baseline calculation, let’s say you take 2 weeks off each year as unpaid vacation time. Then you would be working 50 weeks of the year, and if you work a typical 40 hours a week, you have a total of 2,000 hours of work each year. In this case, you can quickly compute the hourly wage by dividing the annual salary by 2000. Your yearly salary of $28,000 is then equivalent to an average hourly wage of $14 per hour .

Want to reverse the calculation? Start with the hourly wage and answer the question: 14 dollars an hour is how much a year?

What if you get 2 weeks of paid vacation, or you take no vacation time?

Now let’s consider the case where you get paid $28,000 a year, but you get 2 weeks of paid vacation. You get the same result if you work all year with no vacation time. In the previous case, we assumed 2 weeks of unpaid vacation, so your total year consisted of 50 weeks. But if you get paid for 2 extra weeks of vacation (at your regular hourly rate), or you actually work for those 2 extra weeks, then your total year now consists of 52 weeks. Assuming 40 hours a week, that equals 2,080 hours in a year. Your annual salary of $28,000 would end up being about $13.46 per hour .

What’s the total number of working days in 2022?

If you wanted to be even more accurate, you can count the exact number of working days this year. 2022 starts on a Saturday (January 1, 2022) and ends on a Saturday (December 31, 2022). It has a total of 365 days in the year including both weekdays and weekends. There are 105 weekend days (counting every Saturday and Sunday in the year), and 260 weekdays (Monday through Friday). So if you worked a normal 8 hour day on every weekday, and didn’t work any overtime on the weekends, you would have worked a total of 2,080 hours over the 2022 year. You can then convert your annual salary to an hourly wage of roughly $13.46 per hour .

What about the holidays?

Most companies give employees time off for various holidays, so that should really be included in the calculation. The problem is that different countries can vary in their national holidays, and your company may give certain days off but not others. On average, in the U.S. there are 7 major holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, the day after Thanksgiving (since this is always a Friday), and Christmas. Many businesses also have an additional floating holiday that is sometimes used for Christmas Eve, New Years Eve, or one of the days near July 4th. Often this is based on whether one of those days falls on a Tuesday or Thursday. Adding that extra holiday can give employees an extra long weekend. Some schools can also be off on Presidents Day, and banks may have their own official holidays. Retail businesses often have different rules for what’s considered a typical “business day”. Federal holidays may include Veterans Day, Columbus Day, Martin Luther King Day, and Washington’s birthday. Of course, holidays may also fall on a weekend day, in which case you might get the previous Friday or the following Monday off. Given all these variations, here’s a table showing how the number of holidays affects your hourly rate:

$28,000 annual salary in 2022 # holidays # working days hourly rate 6 254 $13.78 per hour 7 253 $13.83 per hour 8 252 $13.89 per hour 9 251 $13.94 per hour 10 250 $14.00 per hour 11 249 $14.06 per hour 12 248 $14.11 per hour 13 247 $14.17 per hour 14 246 $14.23 per hour

How much do I make each month?

Since there are 12 months in a year, you can estimate the average monthly earnings from your $28,000 salary as $2,333.33 per month . Of course, some months are longer than others, so this is just a rough average. If you get paid biweekly, you may get 2 checks in one month and 3 checks in another, so some calculators look at a month as a 4-week period, with 13 of these periods in a year. In that case, you would be getting $2,153.85 per 4-week period .

What about each week?

Assuming 52 weeks in a year, you would make $538.46 per week . You can check how many weeks in a year to get the exact number.

How much money would I make in a day?

First of all, if you’re working a regular 8-hour day, then you can simply take any of the hourly rates listed above and multiply it by 8 to get your daily rate. For example, if you worked a total of 2,000 hours in the year, then your hourly rate is $14 which means your daily rate is $112 per day .

On the other hand, let’s say you just wanted to know the daily rate that would add up to $28,000 counting every day of the year. Then since 2022 has 365 days, you would be making an average of $76.71 per day .
