HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – No doubt, doctors are some of the highest paid working professionals in the nation. But they would probably fare better in any other state than Hawaii.
A new Wallethub study says Hawaii is the fourth worst state for doctors.
The study looked at all 50 states and Washington, D.C., and analyzed several factors like doctors’ wages and number of hospitals per capita.
Hawaii scored last in the nation for average monthly starting salary and second to the last for average annual wage.
The wages were adjusted for cost of living in both scores.
According to the latest survey by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, physicians and surgeons in Hawaii earn an average salary of approximately $241,000.
New York, Rhode Island and New Jersey took the bottom three spots on the list.
The state ranked best for doctors: South Dakota.
In 2017, the University of Hawaii also published an assessment that found that the state’s doctor shortage is worsening, pointing to the state’s high cost of living and lower pay as primary reasons.

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics has recently shared its employment and wage estimates for about 830 occupations in the nation, states and approximately 530 areas. Healthcare practitioners and technical occupations represented 6.2% of total national employment.
The May 2021 estimates showed California ($115,220), Hawaii ($113,370) and New Jersey ($112,860) as the states with the highest wages for healthcare practitioners and technical occupations.
