Can you BASE jump without experience?

How Much Does It Cost to Be a Felix Baumgartner–Style Daredevil? We Ask Four Stunt-Seekers
Staring down the side of a mountain before a jump, a craggy abyss yawning beneath your toes, takes exactly two things: guts and a helluva lot of cash.
Take extreme athlete Troy Hartman, who boasts a résumé that makes typing for a living seem even lamer than it is. He once hosted an MTV show. He was a pilot before he “went through the skysurfing thing,” a phase during which he won a gold medal at the X Games. Now he owns something called a “speed-flying school.” Also, he built his own jet wing. The wing itself cost $20,000. The parachute system was another $8,000, while the jet engines ran him back $25,000. “It’s a gigantic chunk of change, and it really put a strain on me,” he said. “There were a lot of sleepless nights when I was dumping this kind of money into something and had nothing to show for it. It was a complete leap of faith. Many times I found myself saying: Was this the worst decision I ever made in my life?”
As it turns out, it was no more foolish than whatever Hartman did on his MTV show, Senseless Acts of Video. But the project was only affordable with every spare dime he made for two years, plus a refinancing of one of his homes—plus his other-other gig as a real-estate broker. Hartman says he has since recouped the costs by shooting TV pilots and car commercials, and he managed to be a thrifty inventor by buying parts directly from suppliers and learning how to build some of the simpler components himself. “None of this stuff is rocket science,” he says, adding, “I haven’t gotten into the rocket stuff yet.”
Meanwhile, Felix Baumgartner’s style of professional B.A.S.E. jumping—which gets its name from four types of diving boards: buildings, antennas, spans, and earth—is as expensive as it is risky. To be a B.A.S.E. jumper, you have to be a skydiver, and skydiving certification rings in around $1,500. It also takes 200 skydives, at roughly $25 a jump ticket, for a thrill-seeker to earn B.A.S.E.-jumping certification. Then it becomes a lot cheaper, considering all you need is something to jump off—but you still need rigging equipment, which runs upward of $5,000.
The aquanaut James Talacek purchased a used rig 10 years ago for $1,500 and paid for his skydiving certification with prize money from a spearfishing tournament—money he won by netting a 36-pound African pompano. Like the others of his tribe, Talacek dumps most of his discretionary income into adventure. In addition to diving and skydiving, he owns a four-wheeler for mudding. “I don’t spend it on jewelry or fancy stuff or credit-card debt,” he says, of his cash. “A gold chain doesn’t excite me.”
How else do daredevils bankroll what they do? Desk jobs—at least until Red Bull comes calling. Karina Hollekim, a Norwegian professional skier and B.A.S.E. jumper, first clicked in at three years old and soon realized that cruising down groomers wasn’t satisfying enough. To pay for her ski habit in her early 20s, she worked at a sports shop in the summer and did a short stint as a database programmer. “I realized I was as much an alien to them as they were to me,” she said, of her cubicle mates. “Except for the 0s and 1s, we didn’t speak the same language.” Today, she has the luxury of sponsors like Red Bull, the North Face, and Volkl, which pay almost all of her bills: “I don’t really cover much out of my own pocket,” she says.
Not long ago, the B.A.S.E. jumper Jeb Corliss was fighting off a flu he thought he had picked up on a trip to Palau, where he was swimming with jellyfish and diving off World War II wreckage. Corliss’s expense account, he says, is nothing more or less than his very existence: “People need to understand that money is just little pieces of paper with dead people printed on it,” he tells me. “How much does it cost? It costs everything. It’s beyond money. It costs you your time. It costs you life.”
His most money-sucking project, in terms of actual, dead-people dollars, was that time he hopped out of a helicopter while suspended 6,000 feet in the Chinese air. “It was aired live to about 500 million people across Asia,” he says. “It turned into a gigantic, massive, crazy event.” Red Bull sponsored the multimillion-dollar production, and the crew relied on the military for crowd control and air space.
A less daring black hole for daredevils? Insurance. Corliss does pony up health insurance, but definitely not life insurance. “I’ll be dead,” he says, “so what the hell do I care?”
How Much Does It Cost to Become a Skydiver?
We’ve already talked a lot about how much it costs to tandem skydive. But maybe you’re thinking bigger! Maybe you’re thinking about the total cost to, y’know, learn how to solo skydive, kit yourself out and start a whole freefall love affair. Exciting stuff! So let’s cover the nuts and bolts of … how much does it cost to become a skydiver?
The Cost of Your Solo Skydiving Course
Of course you could do it piece-by-piece. We have all the rates posted right here.
That said though: it’s more economical (and smarter, from a currency perspective) to go for one of our Accelerated Freefall course packages. You’ll save the price of a few precious jump tickets when you purchase our full AFF package! This includes your all-important First Jump Course ground school, as well as a class where you’ll learn how to pack your parachute, your new sport logbook and six jumps. You will have two instructors with you in freefall, plus radio assistance to help you during the parachute descent and landing phase of the jump.
Rugged individualist? Cool! You don’t have to do a tandem skydive to enter our AFF Program. We’ve built a specialty package just for you. It includes the ground school, ten minutes in the “indoor skydiving” wind tunnel at iFly Toronto with a WNY Skydiving AFF instructor at your side, and one skydive, wearing your own parachute. (Don’t worry — you’ll still have the instructor support described above.) This package is the lowest price option of all – and a super great way to keep the cost to become a skydiver at an entry level minimum.
Interested in booking one of those packages? Give us a call at least 14 days ahead of time and we’ll roll out the red carpet.
The Cost of Skydiving Equipment
We don’t encourage new students to buy equipment. It’s generally better to rent ($35 per jump, here at WNY) until you’re proficient and knowledgeable enough to select gear that’s right for you.
A used complete skydiving kit — including a main parachute, a reserve, and a container system — will run you around $2,500 at the very low end. It’s possible to spend considerably more (like, three or four times that number) for a brand-new, state-of-the-art kit — though folks rarely do. Most skydivers have a mix of used and new gear, depending on what’s most important to them.
The peripheral equipment won’t cost you more than a couple of big nights out. Some examples: A used skydiving jumpsuit will run you at least a couple hundred dollars. A used visual altimeter won’t cost much at all (especially the older, analog versions). You can jump with a student helmet until you get excited about picking up a more comfortable (perhaps, full-face) version for a around 300 bucks.
The Cost of Jump Tickets
Once you have what you need to skydive, the last part of the puzzle is simply to get into the air. Here at WNY, it’s kind of a Goldilocks question. We have three different altitude “sizes” to choose from: big (10,000’ for $26), medium (5,000’ for $20) and small (3,500’ for $16). No matter what you’re working on, there’s a “feet fit.”
Our best advice for the whole experience: trade retail therapy for the immense investment in your adventurous self that skydiving represents. Ultimately, the cost to become a skydiver cannot be compared to the price of happiness. You’ll be glad you made the choice!
Questions? Call us today or start your journey with that first tandem skydive.
Learn To BASE Jump
Learn To BASE Jump
BASE Jumper Landing
First,
BASE Jumping is probably the most dangerous sport in existence. It is also, we think, one of the most intense and amazing experiences that a human can have.
If you decide to embark upon a BASE journey, then The Great Book of BASE may serve as a reference during your training and your BASE career. But you can’t learn to BASE jump from a book. Really, you can’t. It would be ridiculous and completely stupid to try.
The path is not too long and not too complicated. It requires a bit of patience and a bit of training. First, you will need to learn how to skydive. People have skipped the skydiving step, but no one has ever claimed that doing so is a good idea. Skydiving provides the foundation of canopy skills and freefall control that will be a part of every BASE jump that you make.
Skydiving can be expensive and inconvenient. You have to travel to a dropzone and pay for lessons. You’ll then need to purchase skydiving equipment because you’ll be doing more jumps than you’ll want to do with rented equipment. And you’ll have to pay for all of those jumps, of course…
But, the truth is that skydiving is a lot cheaper and easier than BASE jumping. If you think skydiving is expensive, wait until you want to travel thousands of miles to some of the world’s best BASE sites. While it’s easy to get 10 skydives in a day, you’ll be lucky to get just 1 or 2 BASE jumps in a day, most of the time. So if the expense of skydiving is a turn off for you, then you’re not ready to BASE jump, either.
BASE jumping requires a massive commitment in terms of time, energy, and mental focus. It’s a bit like dedicating your life to risking your life, and you should expect it to take up a lot of your time and energy.
1Become an experienced and accomplished skydiver: This involves taking an AFF course from your local skydiving center (dropzone), and then making 150-250 skydives, or more.
2Find a First Jump Course:
NEXT LEVEL provides cutting edge instruction from a large and diverse team.
Contact NEXT LEVEL to be referred to the right course for you (not all available BASE courses are listed on the website, contact them for more info).
3Find a Mentor:
Once you have completed your First Jump Course, you still won’t know enough to BASE jump safely on your own. It is very important to become a part of the BASE community and find people who will help you to begin your career safely. Expect to ‘Ground-crew’ for local BASE jumpers, which may entail helping them setup and execute BASE jumps, driving for them, or providing other logistical support.
4Train consistently:
BASE jumping makes a terrible part time sport. It is highly important to maintain a level of currency with skydiving and BASE jumping in order to jump safely.
5Keep an open mind:
You will learn something from every BASE jump and from every interaction with other BASE jumpers if you pay attention. In BASE, knowledge is safety. Ignorance and complacency are the leading causes of fatal accidents.
