How much in parts & labor to install some apes?
We put 12″ mini apes on my wife’s 08 1200 custom. All together it was around $560 including bars, wiring and labor at the dealership.
With the Burly install kit you don’t have to cut any wires. The wire extensions included in the kit simply clip onto the existing wire and then into the connector. It’s still a good idea to put a drop of solder on the clip connection and then heat shrink it to ensure it’s a good, firm connection.
I have road6customs and the burly kit waiting to go on. Im scared to cut the wires myself, but my friend is going to internally wire them, and install for $200. Im not scared of installing the easier stuff like air intake and exhaust, but wiring makes me hesitant.. Otherwise i would have had new bars for a couple weeks
learn to do it yourself. Use youtube to watch how they do it. Youll kick yourself if you find out how easy it is to change bars. Dont be scared its way easier than you probably think it is.
Crap. That’s a chunk out of the upgrade budget. I’m trying to bobber-ize my bike as much as possible for 1500….
It depends on the height, and if you want internal or external wiring, but you’re looking at anywhere from $600 on the cheap end to $1200 or more. A lot varies on what type of cables you get, how complicated the bars are to wire, etc.
So, I want some apes on my 08 xl1200c. But I’ve never changed a brake or clutch cable, so I think I should have a tech do it. I was wondering for those who have done it, what did it cost you in parts & labor to install a decent sent of apes on your bike? Post pics if you got them too!

Should You Put Ape Hangers on Your Harley?
At Black Gold Harley-Davidson® in Allen TX, our September special allows you to get 15 percent off installation when you buy new handlebars. So if you’ve been thinking about switching out your factory handlebars, now is a good time. But what type of handlebars should you get? Should you put apes on your Harley®, or will that change the way you feel about your bike?
Handlebar Types
Before we focus on ape handlebars, let’s talk about all the types you have available. Our special applies to new handlebars in any of these options:
Drag bars – Some people call these café racer bars. They’re narrow and flat, causing the rider to lean forward in a more aggressive riding stance. Because the rider’s torso is leaned into the wind, there’s less resistance and slightly improved acceleration. They’re available in zero drag, low drag, and high drag variations. We can position them with straight risers or curved risers to place them wherever it’s comfortable for individual bike owners.
Beach handlebars – If you ride to relax and your arms are longer, you’ll love the feel of these low, swooping bars that allow the hands to rest just outside shoulder width.
Mustache handlebars – They’re shaped like their name implies, like a handlebar mustache. They lend a classy look and sit lower than stock handlebars, so if you choose this type of installation, you won’t need to change your bike’s stock cabling or wiring.
Z-bars – Again, even if you’ve never seen them, you can imagine what they look like based on their name. They look a little like a lightning bolt. Z-bars are very edgy looking and angular, and made for narrow bikes like Sportsters or custom bikes.
Chizeled handlebars – These are pretty cutting-edge, crossing the Z-bar with a mini-ape.
Ape Hangers – This iconic style looks good on practically any bike. They get their name because they require the rider to reach up and grab them like an ape hanging from a tree. Some are extreme, others are more moderate. Ape hangers are all about style.
Ape Hangers and Comfort
Some people swear ape hangers are the most comfortable handlebars, others say exactly the opposite. For most, it depends on the bars.
If you choose the highest, most extreme you can buy, you’ll get the pinnacle of in-your-face attitude, but your arms will go numb on road trips. It’s just common sense – when your arms are waaaaaay above your head, your heart has to work harder to pump blood to your fingertips. Hands will get cold faster, and vibration can cause your fingers to fall asleep.
For tall riders, ape hangers might be the most comfortable choice hands down. Your arms are longer, anything that allows you to stretch out is a plus. Where they might be above the shoulders and heart for an average height rider, they’re just right for you.
People with back issues sometimes prefer ape hangers over handlebars that create a lower riding profile. Ape hangers encourage a more upright posture instead of creating the need to hunch over. On long rides, apehangers that fit your body type also decrease strain on the wrists, elbows, and shoulders.
Ape Hangers and Handling
The same principle applies here. Moderately high and wide apes give most riders additional leverage. If you go too wide, you may face challenges maneuvering the bike at low speeds. You’ll likely notice it takes more effort or more time when cornering or making tight turns. You’re also a bit of an upright sail, so you’ll create more wind resistance for yourself when riding at speed.
When you buy handlebars from us, we help you choose based on the rider’s triangle, the three points of a triangle as made by your feet on the pegs, your hands on the handlebar grips, and your rear on the seat. We can talk you through the choices that will give you a correct weight distribution for comfort, safety, and handling.
To get an idea of what might be the best ape hanger handlebar height for you, sit on your current bike, close your eyes, and reach up to what feels like a natural position, with your elbows slightly bent and hands outside shoulder width. Play around with it, but most people find a range of what’s too high and what’s not high enough.
How to Know if Ape Hangers are Right for You
The bottom line? Handlebar choice is extremely personal. What works for one rider won’t work for another.
For some people, ape hangers are the best possible look on a bike, and the attitude and riding posture they want. If you’re in that group, you’re sold already. You may have to shop around a little bit and make some adjustments if you pick ape hangers that are too extreme, but it’s also possible to modify your seat and some other parts of your bike to make up for some of that.
Mirrors are often easier to use on ape hangers. With a lot of handlebars, your arms might get between your eyes and your mirrors. If you’re on the broad side, your body mass might obscure what’s behind you. With ape hangers, mirrors are higher than obstructions.

How to Choose Ape Hangers: 5 Essential Tips to find the right Handlebar
Are Ape Hangers comfortable? How do I choose a size? How are they on long rides? Are they practical?
These are the types of questions you may be asking when considering installing Ape Hanger Handlebars on your motorcycle.
The driving factor in all of these questions relates to height . The height of the Ape Hangers you choose is going to have the greatest influence on bar comfort, riding style and the looks of the bike.
Let’s explore some elements you should consider:
1. Choosing Height
Ape Hangers generally come in a set range of heights: 8 inch, 10 inch, 12 inch, 14 inch and 16 inch. Some can go as high as 18 or 20 inches, but at this height they can be a bit impractical and uncomfortable.
To eliminate the guess work in choosing which height is best for you, start by taking a few easy measurements before purchasing a new set of bars.
To decide what height you would like your bars, it is important to consider the ‘riders triangle’. The three points of the triangle are made by your contact with the seat, the Handlebar grips and the foot pegs.
The Riders’ Triangle is formed between the contact points of the Seat, Grips and Foot Pegs
Your body weight will be distributed between these three points, placing different amounts of pressure on each body part. Incorrect distribution can lead to pain in the rider’s wrists, back, neck and shoulders.
To get a feel for your ideal riders’ triangle, a simple exercise you can do is to sit on your bike with your eyes closed.
When seated on your bike lift your arms up with elbows slightly bent and hands in a fist shape as if holding onto bars and take note of the position your body naturally takes. In general, your hands will be most comfortable at some height below your shoulders, with hands spread slightly wider than shoulder width. Run a tape measure down from one hand to the height of the risers on your bike to get an approximate height that you find comfortable.
It should be noted that the same height Ape Hanger may put the rider in a different position on different bikes, due to variances in seat heights and fork length.
For example, compare the mounting points on this Harley Davidson Sportster 72 and a Honda Fury:
The distance between seat and risers can vary on different bikes.
As seen in the illustration, there is a large difference in heights between the surface of the seat, and Handlebar risers. As such, the same size Ape Hanger (say, 12”) on the Honda Fury will put the riders’ arms up much higher than the Sportster.
2. Will my cables reach a set of Ape Hangers?
In most cases, extended cables will be needed to fit any Ape over 10” or 12″ in height, depending on the bike. It’s always a good idea to measure your cables before you purchase a set of Ape Hanger Handlebars, especially if you’d like to avoid extending the cables.
Simply measure the amount of free cable from your riser to the switch housing, stretching it out straight, and compare this measurement to the dimensions of your favourite Handlebar.
We have listed the cable length for each Handlebar at the bottom right hand corner of its dimension sheet. It’s always a good idea to allow an extra 1-2 inches cable length to route along the curved bar, as the dimension listed is a straight-line distance.
BarCraft lists the cable length for each Handlebar. See The Different Heights of Ape Hangers Here
3. Do you prefer leaning forwards or sitting up-right?
If you suffer from sore back, shoulders or neck and are currently running low stock bars you may want to consider Ape Hangers as they will raise your riding position, shifting more of your body weight from your hands to the seat. This will also create a more upright posture for the rider, reducing bending and strain on the back muscles and neck.
If you find yourself preferring a lower riding profile but like the bobber look, a good compromise can usually be found with a set of mini Ape Hangers, 8 – 10 inches in height.
4. How about long distance riding?
If you commonly find yourself on rides that extend for hours, especially on the highway, you are more likely to be aware of any little niggles that cause you to end up sore, uncomfortable and in need of another coffee break before continuing along the next stretch of road.
Take note next time you find yourself on one of these rides to which parts of your body are becoming sore. Would shifting more weight to the seat and sitting more upright alleviate the issue?
The overwhelming response is that the change in weight distribution that Ape Hangers offer dramatically increases comfort and reduces pain in the wrists, back and shoulders.
5. Do Ape Hangers affect handling?
If you go for a tall Ape Hanger (14” – 18”) you may notice that the turn-in on your bike feels slower to react. This is due to the fact that you will have to the lean the bars over a longer distance to tip the bike into a curve. It won’t affect the safety or handling of the bike, but changes the responsive feel of agile cornering and performing tight radius turns.
Finding a trade-off
Generally speaking, adding more height to your Ape Hangers gives the following characteristics:
Pro’s
– Can increase comfort by straightening back, lifting chest, relieving weight from arms
– Improves visibility in mirrors
– Looks awesome!
– Fun to ride
– Reduces reaching towards the handlebars
Con’s to consider include;
– More wind resistance at speed
– Increased vibration at handle grips
– Can cause numbness and cold hands if above shoulder height
Keep a trade-off between these factors in mind when choosing your ideal height. Consider the type of riding you do most, whether it’s a daily commute, long distance touring or backroad fun, to decide how the above factors are going to influence you. View Your Range of Custom Ape Hanger Options
Conclusion: Is it worth it? Yes! Ape Hangers are the most popular modification on Harley and cruiser motorcycles for good reason. They’re fun to ride, and just make you feel damn good when looking at that machine. Being able to change the look, feel and comfort of your bike is just as enjoyable as riding it. Experimenting with new parts and refining the look of your bike helps you to get the most out of the whole experience.
