How Much Horsepower Does a Camshaft Add?
Wanting more power out of the engine is a situation we’ve all been in. No matter the displacement or power it already delivers, squeezing out a bit more is always a good thing.
You’ve likely come to a conclusion that you should replace the camshaft through forum discussions and youtube videos. It’s a sound strategy, as installing a performance camshaft is proven to increase horsepower, but the real question is, just how much power does it add?
While it’s true that camshaft adds horsepower, it’s only 10-20 horsepower and generally less than a 10% increase. The often-quoted 50-100 horsepower gain is only possible with a series of accompanying modifications through Stage 1 and Stage 2 mods.
In this article, we’ll discuss how camshaft works and why swapping to a high-performance option increases power, but also ways to further boost the horsepower output. Keep reading if you want to find out more!
How Does The Camshaft Work?
The camshaft is a rod that can be located at the bottom, or more commonly the top of the engine. It has a set of precisely machined cams that are timed perfectly to open and close the valves.
Camshaft located towards the bottom of the engine block is a part of a pushrod cam system. As the name implies, the camshaft pushes a set of rods that extend towards the valves and operate them.
If the camshaft is located at the top, we call it an overhead camshaft. You’ve heard of a dual overhead camshaft – it’s a system with two camshafts, one handling the exhaust valve, while the other controls the intake valve.
When you hear the term 16-valve four-cylinder engine, it means that the camshaft has four sets of four cams, each responsible for operating the two exhaust and two intake valves. Alternatively, a dual-cam design will have two camshafts with eight cams on each.
Does The Camshaft Affect Power?
The engine generates power by igniting an air-fuel mixture once it has been properly mixed and pressurized. Because the camshaft opens and closes the intake valve, modifying it can create a mixture richer in oxygen and more powerful ignition.
The stock camshaft has been precisely engineered to ensure longevity, optimal power, and fuel economy. The reason why a results in an increase of only 10 to 20 horsepower is that it doesn’t affect the amount of fuel sprayed into the cylinder.
Getting more power out of the engine is a never-ending cycle of improvements. The new camshaft will get bottlenecked by the fuel injectors. Add better fuel injectors, and you’ll need better valves. Swap those out, and you need a better intake and exhaust manifold to deliver and expel all the air. Once you’ve done all of that, you can get the 50-100 horsepower boost, but at that point, the question becomes if the whole upgrade is even worth the money.
How To Replace The Camshaft
If you’ve been reading the guides I’ve written, you’ve likely learned a lot about DIY maintenance and repairs. However, you’ve also picked up that I don’t teach what I don’t know, or at the very least know how to convey properly.
Replacing the camshaft is certainly one of those jobs, doubly so when a custom camshaft is involved. If you want to upgrade the camshaft, find a trustworthy mechanic and ask them if the camshaft you’ve found would work well. This guide will show you just how much work and skill it takes to replace the camshaft.
How Much Does It Cost To Replace The Camshaft?
The cost of an aftermarket camshaft depends on the brand and type of vehicle – $200 to $600 dollars is the general range, but it can easily go into thousands with the best options. You can also get kits that include all the parts you can exchange along with the camshaft. In terms of labor costs, mechanics can charge $1000-2000 because the task is very time-consuming and complicated.
Should You Swap The Camshaft
Replacing the camshaft purely for an increase in performance is a very expensive and inefficient way of getting more horsepower, especially if you’re driving an older vehicle.
Over time, the powertrain loses power through wear and the accumulation of dirt and carbon deposits. Cleaning out the system manually where you can, and adding fuel additives will restore more power to the engine than what a new camshaft adds.
That being said, if you have to replace the camshaft anyway, choosing a high-performance aftermarket option over expensive stock camshafts is not a bad idea.
If you’ve set your sights on getting more power from the engine, then consider going all in and replacing several components, from intake to the exhaust. Depending on what’s legal in your state, you can start by deleting the exhaust catalytic converter and installing a new exhaust manifold.
Modern cars are hindered by emission regulations, so deleting as much as you legally can will let the engine breathe better and output more power. It’s a topic we’ve covered in-depth in this article, so make sure to check it out.
FAQs
How much HP does a Stage 2 camshaft add?
Stage 2 involves upgrading the camshaft, but it also requires you to upgrade the intake and exhaust system as well as remap the ECU to complete Stage 1. When both stages are completed, you can get 20-25% more power out of the engine.
How much HP does a Stage 3 cam add?
Stage 3 will have up to 40% more power compared to the stock setup, but to get there, you’ll have to complete the Stage 1 & 2 modifications, and mild big bore of the engine.
Does a camshaft increase horsepower?
Yes, a camshaft adds 10 to 20 horsepower depending on the setup. To get the full potential of the high-performance camshaft, you’ll have to swap out additional components like the air intake, exhaust manifold, injectors, and valve heads.
Summary
Replacing the camshaft is very expensive as it can’t be easily done at home, and the power gains are minimal. For that reason, I recommend not upgrading your camshaft until you need to replace the stock one, and while you’re there, you can upgrade a few other parts and get the power boost you’re looking for. On its own, a high-performance camshaft will not give you a power increase greater than 10%.

6.2L LS Camshaft Dyno Test: Stock vs Comp vs Summit Stage 4
L92 6.2L Test Engine
While we might not be able to pick the best cam for every 6.0 or 6.2L LS engine, we can provide you with several to choose from. Although our test was run on a 6.2L L92 Gen 4 LS, the basic principles hold true for any cam selection. (See our LS engine spotters guide here.) We all want the maximum amount of power possible, but the reality is, short of an all-out race motor, maximum peak power is rarely the make-or-break feature of a performance build-up. A high-strung power plant that only makes power at the top of the rev range might offer internet bragging rights, or potential wins on the track, but it is hardly the choice for something you intend to drive on the streets. The important point here is that cam choice is dictated by the application and intended use. After all, a 4.8L (or 283 SBC) will certainly respond to different cam timing than a 7.0L LS7 or 454 BBC LS7 for that matter.
See all 24 photos See all 24 photos Our test motor started out life as an all-aluminum, 6.2L L92.
Baseline LQ4 Cam 445 hp/460 lb-ft
If you were less concerned about maximum power and more about having 450 hp with a dead-smooth idle and optimized drivability, the factory Gen 3 LQ4 camwould be the obvious choice. This was the starting point for our 6.2L L92, as we ran the motor on the engine dyno first with the non-VVT Gen 3 (6-liter) LQ4 cam (to replace the 6.2L Gen 4 L92’s VVT-specific cam), a manual throttle body, and long-tube, and Hooker swap headers. So equipped, the junkyard 6.2L produced 445 hp at 5,600 rpm and 460 lb-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm. The next two cams would be both more powerful, and more difficult to choose from.
See all 24 photos See all 24 photos The first cam we tested against the LQ4 cam was this custom profile from Comp Cams. The Comp cam offered a .608-/.610-inch lift split, a 230/235-degree duration split, and 114 LSA.
Comp Cams 230/235 duration, 550 hp/512 lb-ft
Having established a baseline with the LQ4 cam, we installed the first of our two cam upgrades. The custom cam from Comp Cams offered a 0.608-/0.610-inch lift split, a 230/235-degree duration split, and 114 lobe separation angle (LSA). This is also called lobe centerline angle, or LCA. The cam was teamed with a suitable valve spring upgrade consisting of 26526-16 (dual) springs. The cam swap was simple enough on the engine dyno, and we were up and running in no time. Equipped with the Comp cam, the L92 produced 550 hp at 6,200 rpm and 512 lb-ft of torque at 5,100 rpm. The cam swap was worth over 100 hp (even more out at 6,500 rpm), but the most impressive thing about the swap was that it came with no loss in power down low in the tested rev range. What’s not to like about an extra 100 hp and 50 lb-ft of torque? But was there even more power to be had?
See all 24 photos See all 24 photos Next up was the even wilder Stage-4 cam from Summit Racing. The Stage-4 cam offered .625-/.605-inch lift, a 234/247-degree duration split. and 113-degree LSA.
Summit Stage V 234/247 duration, 568 hp/510 lb-ft
Installation of the more aggressive Summit Stage 4 cam quickly answered that question. The Summit cam offered a 0.625-/0.605-inch lift split, a 234/247-degree duration split, and 113-degree LSA. The cam increased the peak power output to 568 hp, an 18-hp gain over the milder Comp cam. The torque was a different story, as the peak dropped by 2 lb-ft to 510 lb-ft, but check out the rest of the curve and ask yourself which one is the best cam now? If you are all about peak power, it’s hard to beat that Stage 4, but it’s equally hard to argue with a cam that offered more torque up to 5,500 rpm where 90 percent of driving takes place. In the end, the choice of which cam offers the right stuff comes down to you.
See all 24 photos See all 24 photos
LQ4 Cam vs Comp Cam
Run with a stock LQ4 cam, the 6.2L L92 produced 445 hp at 5,600 rpm and 460 lb-ft of torque at 4,600 rpm. After installation of the Comp cam, the power output jumped to 550.3 hp and 512 lb-ft of torque. The cam swap improved the power output by more than 100 hp, but the gains were even greater out near 6,500 rpm. Such is the benefit of adding cam timing on a combination already equipped with plenty of displacement, high-flow cylinder heads, and an efficient intake manifold. Basically everything was present except the cam timing to make 550 hp.
See all 24 photos See all 24 photos
LQ4 vs Comp vs Summit Stage 4
The Stage-4 cam offered four extra degrees of intake duration (234 vs 230 degrees), 12 degrees of extra exhaust duration (247 vs 235 degrees) and 1 degree tighter LSA (113 vs 114) over the Comp cam. Basically, the Summit cam was more aggressive and responded just as you would expect a wilder cam to. Equipped with the Summit Stage-4 cam, the peak power output jumped to 568 hp, but peak torque dropped slightly to 510 lb-ft. If you look at the curves, the wilder cam offered more power above 5,500 rpm, but it lost out to the milder Comp cam below that point. Such is the trade-off inherent in wilder cam timing. Choosing between these two would be difficult indeed.
