Need Imperial & Metric conversions for recipes? These US Cups to Ounces Cooking Conversions charts will help you convert from cups to grams and ounces.
From my research, I have found that the United States is one of three nations (Liberia and Burma being the others) that have not adopted the metric system as their official weights and measures system.
In the U.S. Customary System (also known as the inch-pound system), more than 300 different units exist to measure various physical quantities. Many of those units use the same name but have very different meanings.
All this can make it really tricky to convert measurements.
To try to make things a bit easier for you, I am adding conversion charts for commonly used ingredients.
Check back from time to time because I will update when I have new items to add.
Please note: All conversions are approximate weights.

Why do I need this?
Cooks in the USA usually measure recipe ingredients by volume. The rest of the world favors measuring by weight. Since food items vary in density, you can’t use a simple arithmetic formula to translate from one to the other.
To take an obvious example, a cup of alfalfa sprouts will weigh much less than one of sugar. Less obviously, all-purpose white flour weighs less than wheat meal or rye flour. Hence the need for this table.
You should use the table as a rough guide only, as several factors might affect the results: How firmly the flour is packed, how finely the cheese is shredded, and so on. For most recipes, the approximation won’t matter. If you’re making eggplant parmigiana, for instance, the exact quantity of mozzarella won’t be critical (there will be a greater variation in the size of the eggplant). But for other dishes – especially bread, cakes and the like – accuracy is more important.
Note that the chart is based on a standard US cup, which is 240 ml. The metric cup (used in Australia and elsewhere) is about 4% larger.
Other conversions
What if you need to convert between ounces and grams? To do an exact conversion, you would multiply the number of ounces by 28.35. In practice, multiplying by 25 gives a figure that’s close enough for most recipes – at least, those that involve small quantities. To convert larger quantities, multiply the number of pounds by 450.
Liquids
In most cases, you won’t need to use our table for milk, apple juice, olive oil or other liquids, as most recipes list liquid ingredients by volume. You might occasionally see a recipe that calls for so-many grams of, say, yogurt, but this is rare.
Just keep in mind that a US cup is 240 ml, which is almost exactly eight fluid ounces, a fluid ounce being approximately 30 ml.
By the way, you don’t need to worry about any of this if you are using the excellent recipes here on Veg World. These all list their ingredients in cups, imperial and metric.

How Many Almonds in an Ounce?
579 shares Pinterest
If you’re looking to stop an attack of the munchies, grabbing a serving of nuts is a great way to fill your hand — nuts contain fiber, protein, and heart-healthy fats. But that doesn’t mean you should start eating almonds all day long — even healthy snacks should be consumed in moderation.
You might’ve heard the common recommendation to stick to a handful of nuts per day, which is about an ounce. But that’s pretty vague: What size hand are we talking about, anyway? And how many almonds — and other nuts — are in a one-ounce serving?
Read on to find out how many nuts you should pour out into your hand — and to see quick and easy photos of serving sizes for each type of nut. (Keep in mind that nuts vary in size and weight, so these pictures are just a general guideline.)

1. Almonds
It takes about 23 almonds to make up an ounce, which will get you about six grams of protein. Bonus: A recent study suggested that almonds are indeed a filling, healthy option that don’t necessarily cause weight gain. (As always, portion control is key.)
2. Cashews
About 18 cashews will yield a one-ounce serving, and about 157 calories. Native to coastal Brazil, cashews belong to the same family as the mango and pistachio nut.
3. Walnuts
You’ll hold about 14 walnut halves to get an ounce, which will net you about 185 calories and more than four grams of protein. Go for walnuts with their skins intact — their skins are believed to contain the phenols, which are thought to provide numerous health benefits.
4. Macadamias
Coveted for their sweet, buttery flavor, macadamia nuts are among the fattiest of all nuts — and the tastiest. You’ll want to pour about 10 to 12 into your palm for one ounce, which adds up to about 204 calories.
5. Hazelnuts
Hazelnuts are good for more than just making Nutella. They contain a significant amount of vitamin E, providing nearly 20 percent of the daily recommended intake. It’ll take about twenty-one hazelnuts to make one ounce, and that’ll add up to about 178 calories.
6. Pistachios
Pistachios make a great, gratifying snack because you can eat so many of them — if you buy them in the shell, you can occupy yourself for quite some time as you crack 49 of them open to get your ounce. Grand total: 159 calories.
7. Pecans
Ah, pecans. A handful of about 19 halves will net you one ounce and about 196 calories. Fun fact: Pecans are the only tree nut that is native to the United States.
8. Brazil Nuts
Keep an eye on especially close eye on portion control here — just six Brazil nuts (give or take) gets you to your one-ounce serving, and to 187 calories. They also contain a significant amount of selenium, according to the National Institutes of Health.
9. Peanuts
Peanuts might not be the first thing that come to mind when you think of protein, but one ounce — or around 42 peanuts — contains more than seven grams (and about 161 calories).
The Bottom Line
Raw, unsalted nuts are a great choice for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up.
As with any other foods, you just want to keep an eye on portion control — you don’t want to eat a whole bag of chips in one sitting, nor do you want to eat a whole bag of nuts, even if they’re healthier. All you need is twenty-three almonds to get to an ounce.
