How to fill a cup for baking
I asked my followers on social media about how they fill cups. The majority scoop ingredients such as flour or sugar out of the bag and then level the top, so that’s the approach I’ve taken when measuring similar ingredients for my calculator. I also like to give the bag a little squeeze beforehand to break up any lumps.
Many conversion charts give 1 cup of flour as 120g. However, I’ve found the only way I can get it that low is to sift the flour and then use a spoon to fill the cup with the sifted flour. I don’t know about you, but I prefer to sift flour after it’s been measured, not before. So in my conversions, you’ll find a cup of flour weighs more as it reflects how I fill a cup.
For ingredients in smaller packets, I pour them into the cup straight from the bag and level the top.
For soft ingredients such as butter or cream cheese, I push them into the cup with the back of a spoon to ensure any gaps are filled and then level the top.

Tips for Measuring Butter
Since most sticks of butter come with measurements printed on the outside of the wrapper, it should be somewhat simple to decipher how much you need. One stick of butter is marked by teaspoons and tablespoons, and also shows the tablespoon-to-cup equivalents. The front of the wrapper also reads 4 oz. and 113g net wt.
If you are using softened butter, however, you will not have these guides. To measure softened butter, scoop and press it into a measuring spoon or dry measuring cup, pushing down with a spatula to remove any air. Then level the top with the spatula or the flat side of a knife.
Maybe you have stick butter but only leftover, odd-shaped pieces. Not to worry—there is a simple method you can use to measure out the amount you need. Take a two-cup liquid measuring cup and fill it up to the one-cup mark with water. Then begin submerging the butter pieces, poking them down if needed, until the water level reaches the amount of butter required in your recipe. For example, if you need 1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) butter, add butter pieces until the water level is up to 1 1/4 cups. Drain out the water and you are left with the amount of butter you need.
Converting Metric Measurements Without a Chart
The only metric measurements that can be converted to U.S. customary measurements are those that fall into the categories of temperature, length, volume, and pressure.
If you remember that 1 tablespoon of butter is 14 grams, then you will be able to calculate almost any butter measurement. Keep in mind that 4 tablespoons equal 1/4 cup and 3 teaspoons equal 1 tablespoon.
If you find yourself cooking recipes where the same ingredients need to be converted over and over again, then it may be worth it to memorize (or write down) a few other ingredient equivalents so you are not searching for conversion charts. Just remember that because these conversions only work for butter, you can’t use them universally.
Simple Ways To Measure Butter
Is there anything more marvelous than butter? It perfectly complements all foods and makes even the most ordinary recipes taste like out of this world. Over the years, it has become an all-time favorite ingredient, and many people cannot imagine their lives—or fridges—without it.
Measuring butter, on the other hand, is not as dreamy and pleasant as is its taste. You’ve probably found yourself in a situation where you cannot measure the exact amount of butter and you add too little, or too much, and the flavor is just not right. Well, we are here to help!
Read on to find out how to measure butter without a scale with ease, how many tablespoons are in one stick of butter, and all other butter measurement information.
How to Measure Butter Without a Kitchen Scale?
Cooking and baking with butter can sometimes be a bit of a hassle. Although butter is the ultimate ingredient that enhances the flavor of each recipe and makes it even more delicious, it creates a bit of a sticky mess around the kitchen, and it can be really hard to measure to add to recipes, especially if you don’t have a kitchen scale.
However, there are three simple and easy ways to measure butter without using a scale:
Melted butter measuring method
Measuring melted butter is pretty straightforward. First, you let the butter soften, scoop it with a measuring spoon, and level off. The same goes for measuring whipped butter.
Water-displacement method
This method is a great solution for measuring cold butter without a scale. Take a bigger liquid measuring cup and fill it with water equal to the amount of butter you need for the recipe. Add chunks of butter until the water doubles in volume. Be sure that the measuring cup is big enough to handle twice the volume that you wish to measure out.
For example, if you need a 1/2 cup of butter, fill in the cup with 1/2 cup of water, add butter until it doubles to 1 full cup.
Butter Twist method
Butter Twist has markings at 1 tbsp increments, which makes it easy for you to measure the butter amount accurately. Set it to the right tbsp amount and simply turn the cutting ring 180 degrees to cut and dispense your butter.
Not only does it help you follow the recipes by accurately adding butter, but it also makes kitchen cleaning a whole lot easier since there’s no more sticky mess!
Butter Measuring Made Easy
Most butter wrappers are printed with measurement information—this keeps the process simple. That is, if the recipe calls for the same measures as written on the wrapper. But, what happens when a recipe calls for ounces or grams?
By following this conversion table for butter, you will be able to accurately measure the right amount to add to your recipe each time.
