For our example, we’re going to purchase 100 3″x3″ die-cut stickers costing $65 for an upcoming art event that we’re taking part in. The cost to be a vendor will be $25, and event parking will cost $10. For the sake of simplicity, this example is assuming the venue is providing the table and chairs.

Alright, let’s break down the costs. Obviously, there’s the cost to print the stickers, the vendor fee (if they charge to take part in the event), and parking (if applicable). There are other costs to consider, but again, let’s keep it simple. If this your first time vending, then you may need to factor in some one-time costs like a small folding table and chair, maybe a table cloth, some sort of cash box, and possibly a phone enabled credit card reader like the ones from Square or PayPal. As you can see from the example receipt above, we just figured out that our overhead, or total cost, for the event is $100. Now, divide the total cost by the total number of stickers (see example). Ta-da! Now we know that it costs us $1 per sticker for the event. At a minimum, you will want to charge $2 per sticker, getting you a 50% profit margin. Not bad…not great either.

Don’t forget: These are specialty events which can typically charge premium prices. So don’t undersell yourself, and don’t forget you’re not even factoring in the time it took you to create the artwork, which we’ll touch on in a future article. You don’t want to charge too much either, as a $5 sticker will turn away a lot of potential customers. The exception to this is if the stickers are oversized (a sticker with a minimum 6-inches on the smallest side).

Ilona prints all her stickers at home using a color printer and a Cricut cutting machine, which is like a primer with a blade that can cut precise shapes out of paper and other materials.

To print the stickers, you’ll need to get adhesive sticker paper, which can be found at craft stores, office supply stores, a specialty retailer like OnlineLabels.com, or on Amazon. Make sure whatever sticker paper you get works with your type of printer, whether inkjet or laser.

Sticker paper comes in different finishes like matte, glossy, or holographic. Which one you choose will depend on your aesthetic preferences. A popular option is to print on matte paper, which is the most cost effective, then apply a sheet of self-adhering laminate for a glossy finish. This method not only adds shine, but adds a layer or protection to make the sticker water- and weather-resistant.

The printed sheet is then placed in a cutting machine, such as a Cricut or Silhouette, which cuts around the stickers to make the final product.

Ilona said she prefers this method because she can create stickers on demand instead of keeping an inventory of stickers she may or may not sell. That also allows her to have more designs on offer because she doesn’t need to make a large batch every time she adds something new to her shop.

“I’ve tried outsourcing with a printer and a supplier, but in my experience, I have way less control and quality,” she says.

The downside of printing at home is that it can take a lot of trial and error to get everything just right—from making sure the print quality is correct to calibrating the cutting machine. That means a lot of time and materials spent before you have stickers you can actually sell.

Printing stickers with YourStuffMade or StickerApp

The second option for printing stickers is paying a company to do it for you. There are several major online companies, such as StickerApp, Sticker Mule, YourStuffMade, and Sticker Giant. You can also look for local printers that may have better deals and faster turnaround times.

With these services, you upload your artwork outline and the company prints, cuts, and mails you the finished stickers. These stickers are high-quality, can come in a range of finishes, and take out the guesswork of calibrating a cutting machine and printer on your own. It’s also a sensible option if you’re doing a high-volume of orders and don’t have the time to print them by yourself or you don’t want to invest in equipment to print at home.

This is the method Christine uses now that she’s doing a higher volume of sales. She started her business by printing at home, but now uses a variety of third-party printers to print large quantities of stickers.

“In the beginning, when I received an order, I could just make it,” she says. “The business grew over time, and it was getting a little bit hard to manage all that, so I did slowly transition.”

The downside of using a printing company is that you won’t know what the final product will look like until you get it, so if you don’t like how your sticker turned out, you’re stuck with it. It also means paying for batches of stickers up front. With these printers, the cost per sticker scales with the quantity order, so you pay less per sticker the more you order. That leaves you deciding whether to order a lot of stickers you may not sell at a lower cost per sticker, or pay more per sticker and get a more manageable amount.

Printing stickers with dropshipping

The last option for printing stickers is using a dropshipping service. Shopify apps like Printful or Printify let you upload a design and they take care of the rest, from printing to cutting to sending orders directly to your customer. It takes a lot of work off your hands, but also leaves you with less control, because you don’t get to see the sticker yourself. If you choose this option, make sure to order a sample so you can review the finished product.

How do I sell stickers online?

When you’re ready to set up shop, you have a few options for where to actually sell your stickers. You can set up your own standalone online store, sell on Etsy, or use a dropshipping marketplace like Redbubble. Here’s what you need to know about each one.

Selling stickers on Etsy

Etsy is a marketplace for crafters and vintage shops, where you can find a lot of stickers for sale.

When you sign up for Etsy, you get a standard storefront you can list your products on. The advantage is that Etsy has a built-in base of customers who browse the site for new goods. People are already searching Etsy for stickers, so if you optimize your product pages, there’s a chance for potential customers to easily find your stickers.

But Etsy comes with fees. Each new product added will cost you a $0.20 listing fee that renews at a set time. Then, when a sale is made with a basic account, Etsy takes a 5% commission, then charges a further fee for the transaction. When you’re selling stickers that may only cost a few dollars to begin with, the fees add up quickly and cut into your profit.

While Etsy is simple to set up, you also have very few customization options to make your shop stand out from others, so having great product descriptions, optimizing your listings, and having high-quality product photos will be key to succeeding.

Both Christine and Ilona started their shops on Etsy, as many sticker sellers do.

“Etsy would be an option to start for beginners who are maybe having a small amount of listings, or are just kind of feeling it out,” says Christine.

Ilona said that Etsy is a good way to test out your business, see if there’s a demand for your products, and build a customer base.

Both women now operate standalone shops on Shopify in addition to keeping their Etsy listings running as an alternative sales channel.

Selling stickers on a marketplace like Redbubble

Websites like Redbubble or Society6 let you upload your art, and when a customer purchases something, the website prints and ships the product for you.

It’s a very no-fuss way to sell your sticker designs without worrying about running a business, doing marketing, or dealing with customers.

The downside, of course, is you have very little control over the process and don’t actually create the finished product yourself. This makes sense if you’re looking for a simple side hustle that generates passive income, but the potential for profit is also lower. Because the website takes care of most of the process, your profit will only be a small fraction of the sale price, and because stickers are typically inexpensive, your profit per sale might only be $0.50.

But on the other hand, these sites let you put your design on a number of template products, including art prints, mugs, t-shirts, and phone cases, without you ever having to source these products yourself.

These marketplaces could be a good way to test a design or two to see if they generate interest. To really scale your business, though, you’ll want to move to your own website so you’ll have the most flexibility and revenue opportunities.

How to price stickers for sale

It’s hard to put a price on art, especially art you’ve made yourself—but you’re going to have to do it now!

Stickers sold online typically range from $2 to $6, but can be sold at higher prices for larger or more complex designs. It’s a good idea to look at other sticker shops and compare their prices and sticker sizes to your own to get a general idea of how to price your collection competitively.

You also need to take into consideration the cost of your materials, your labor, and your packaging. Also consider your experience and artistic talent—are you new or well established? If you’re just starting out, look to the market to ensure your prices are staying within an established range.

“I made a whole spreadsheet of everything, like all the costs of all the materials, and also making sure my labor and time was paid, along with shipping,” says Christine.

Christine’s stickers average $3.50 each, but that may not be the right price for you. Take stock of all your costs before setting a price to make sure you come out on top.

How to ship stickers

One of the best things about selling stickers is that they’re a breeze to ship. For an average order, all you’ll need is a stamp, which also keeps shipping costs low for customers.

Some customers may want tracking or speedier delivery, so Christine also offers first-class priority shipping as an option.

To send stickers, it’s best to look for rigid mailers that won’t bend and damage your stickers, or envelopes that include rigid cardstock inside. Some sellers also place a Do Not Bend sticker on the envelope.

Sticker shops are also known for creating fun packaging that looks like a beautiful gift when it arrives at your customer’s door. It’s not uncommon to include a short, handwritten thank you card or a branded sticker with an order. Some people also get creative with packaging, like branded tissue paper, but you need to keep your costs in check. There’s no point in having beautiful packaging if it eats away all your profits.

Ilona packages her orders with adorable custom wrapping and stickers. This makes her deliveries memorable and special and keeps her customers coming back for more. But she also orders supplies in bulk to keep costs down, and keeps a budget sheet to make sure she’s not overspending.

“I used to upgrade and change the packaging every other month to make it interesting, but I’ve since stopped doing that because I realized that it’s not really cost efficient for me,” she says.

How to Price Your Stickers on Etsy – Jobless Hustler

If you open Etsy and search for stickers, you’ll find tons of listings for stickers for $2 or less. You might assume that in order to compete with these stickers you’d have to sell yours for equally as cheap. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

You should aim to charge at least $4 with free shipping per listing you have on Etsy. At first glance, this may seem overpriced, but using certain strategies discussed in this post, you can connect with customers who would be more than happy to buy your stickers for $4.

Can I really sell my stickers for $4 a piece?

When I first started selling stickers on Etsy, I couldn’t imagine anyone paying $4 for one of my stickers. I thought the price was outrageous, and that I would never sell any stickers.

Four months after opening my shop, I had sold exactly 106 stickers, and not one of them sold for anything less than $4 (well, technically $3.99, but we’ll get into that later in this article). In fact, I had even sold some of the stickers for $5 a piece.

I had proven my own ideas about a fair price for a sticker wrong.

I want to stress the fact that this happened during the FIRST four months of my shop’s existence. In the first few months of any shop’s existence, making sales is significantly more difficult because the shop has (1) relatively few listings posted on Etsy and (2) relatively few sales and reviews on Etsy to make your shop seem credible and reliable.

The fact that I sold 106 individual stickers within the FIRST four months of my shop’s existence means that 106 different people were willing to pay $4, what I would consider to be an exorbitant price, to a brand new shop that doesn’t even really seem credible yet. Imagine how many people would be willing to pay that price to a well established shop.

The truth is, both you and I are individuals with unique experiences and demands. Personally, I would NEVER pay $4 for one sticker, but that is a reflection of my own personal experiences and biases. Of course I wouldn’t pay $4 for a sticker; I don’t even use them. I don’t use planners or decorate any of my things with stickers. In short, I am not a good representation of my target market.

As a business owner and marketer, you need to throw your own personal biases out the window. As of January 5, 2021, there are over 7.6 billion people alive on Earth, and not one of them thinks and feels EXACTLY like you. In fact, probably less than a million of them even think and feel similarly to you.

So just because YOU would never pay $4 for an individual sticker does not mean that NOBODY would ever pay $4 for a sticker. There is a large group of people who would be more than happy to do so.

You might be like me and doubt the quality of your artwork, doubt the quality of your stickers, and doubt the demand for $4 stickers. That’s okay. Try it anyway, and see what happens. You, like me, might be pleasantly surprised.

But won’t I make more sales if my stickers are cheaper?

Are there potential customers who will see your $4 price tag and decide not to buy your stickers because they think that is too expensive? Of course there will be some customers like this, perhaps even many customers like this.

Maybe if I had priced my stickers at $2 a piece, a price that I consider to be far more reasonable and realistic for a single sticker, I would be sitting here and telling you that I made not 106 sales within my shop’s first four months, but rather 212 sales!

But let’s do the math:

Quantity Sold Price Gross Income 106 $4 $424 212 $2 $424 Guess what? Selling 212 stickers for $2 a piece earns you $424, the same amount you’d earn selling half that amount of stickers for $4 a piece. Woohoo.

As you can see from the table, selling twice the amount of stickers for half price earns you the same amount of money.

And that’s just gross income. Etsy takes a $0.20 listing fee in addition to the set percentage it takes per sale. This means that every time you make a sale, Etsy will charge you $0.20 to relist the item regardless of whether your item costs $2 or $200.

Look at this table to see how much you’d be paying Etsy for listing fees at $2 vs. $4 sales.

If you price your stickers at $2 and make double the sales that you would make when your stickers are priced at $4, you’d make the same gross income, but you’d actually make less net profit because you’d have to pay double the listing fees.

In my example, this results in earning about $20 more if you sell half the amount of stickers for double the price.

$20 may not seem like much of a difference to you now, but this adds up month after month.

Of course, it is impossible for me to know how many sales I would have made if I was selling my stickers for only $2 instead of $4. Perhaps I would’ve only been able to sell 80 more stickers at $2 instead of selling 106 more stickers. In that case, I made less profit, both gross and net than I would have selling my stickers for $4 a piece:

Unfortunately, it will earn you around $70 less than selling 106 stickers at $4. (Note that the Net Profit column does not take Etsy’s set transaction fees into consideration, so it is not a perfect representation of the net profit you’d make selling that quantity at that price point. The column is simply meant to demonstrate the difference in net profit due to listing fees.)

Of course, maybe I’d sell many more than twice the amount of stickers at the $2 price point than I did at the $4 price point. For example, maybe I’d be able to sell 180 more stickers. In that case, I’d make more profit, both net and gross:

While it’s true that selling more than double the amount of stickers at $2 than you’d be able to sell at $4 will earn you more profit, it still might not be worth it because of the most valuable resource of all: your time.

Fulfill Less Sticker Orders to Save Time and Money

Fulfilling orders takes time. At the very least, you’ll have to print shipping labels and put stickers into envelopes. If you take the time to cover the stickers in protective packaging or add notes or decorations to your envelopes, that will take up more of your time. If you print your own stickers instead of ordering them online, that will take up even more of your time (and trust me, this step can take A LOT of time).

Let’s be generous and assume that it only takes you 1 minute to fulfill an order if you order your stickers online and 3 minutes to fulfill an order if you print them yourself. Let’s also assume you’re able to make 30 sales a day selling stickers for $4 a piece and 60 sales a day selling stickers for $2 dollars a piece:

If you order your stickers online, the time commitment it will take to fulfill your Etsy orders is reasonable, even if you’re making as many as 60 sales per day! Most people have an hour a day they can devote to their online business. However, is that hour best spent fulfilling orders?

Fulfilling orders does not grow your business; you already made the sale, so you’re not adding anything creative to your business that will generate more sales. Of course, fulfilling orders is a vital step for any business, but it is a step that anyone could do. Why not spend that hour designing new stickers, writing better copy for your listings, taking great photos for new listings, or creating pins on Pinterest? Those are the actions that will ensure that you’ll be able to continue to make 60 sales per day, not fulfilling orders.

You could always hire out help and maybe spend $8 a day to save that hour of time. However, if you print your stickers yourself, you’d likely have to spend 3 times as much time or money to fulfill your orders. This means that if you’re making 60 orders per day, you’ll have to spend either 3 hours or $24 dollars a day just to fulfill the orders.

I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t have 3 hours a day to devote to my online business. Okay, I MIGHT be able to squeeze them in by sacrificing activities that improve my quality of life such as exercise, healthy home cooked meals, quality time with friends and family, and sleep. But is it really worth that much to me?

If you’re fortunate enough to be able to squeeze those 3 hours into your schedule, think of how much you’d be able to grow your business if you spent those 3 hours on more valuable actions like designing new stickers or marketing.

Once again, you can hire these 3 hours out, but you’d be spending $24 per day, or $8,760 per year, for this service. I would argue that it is well worth it to $8,760 per year to save 1,095 hours per year, but why spend that much when you could sell your stickers for as twice as much, make half the sales, but still make the same gross income?

As demonstrated in the section above, because of Etsy’s $0.20 listing fee, you make less net profit for selling twice as many stickers at $2 than you would selling half as many stickers at $4. This gap in net profit is further increased if you plan on hiring out your order fulfillment.

If you make only 30 sales per day at $4 per sticker, you’d only pay about $12 per day, or $4,380 per year to make the same amount of money. You’d have to spend $8,760 per year, $4,380 more, in order to fulfill 60 orders. Why spend more money on fulfillment when you can increase the price of your stickers, make less sales, but make more net profit due to money saved in fulfillment costs?

But I’ve Checked my Competition: There’s Many Stickers on Etsy Selling for $2 or Even Less!

Open Etsy right now, and search for any kind of sticker. I guarantee that you’ll be able to find multiple stickers for $2 or less.

In fact, I’d bet you’d be able to find multiple sticker packs for sale for $2.

Every single one of these listings is less than the $4 I suggest, and 4 of 6 are $2 or less.

Even worse, 5 of 6 of the listings are for sticker packs, not individual stickers. Notice that the Baby Yoda listing offers 50 stickers for $2. Those are some cheap stickers!

Granted, I DID search for “cheap stickers”. Other phrases like “plant stickers” or “cowboy stickers” won’t return quite as many cheap results, but you’ll still be able to find some ridiculously cheap options for those keywords and most other sticker key words.

If you’re anything like me, you might assume that if there’s similar looking stickers for sale for $2, no one will pay me $4 for my stickers. That assumption is wrong.

Etsy shops that sell stickers for $2 rely on quantity of sales to make money. It’s a viable strategy that does work, but it’s not the only strategy.

As demonstrated in the sections above, a larger quantity of sales accrues more listing fees and fulfillment expenses, which means that in order to make more money selling your stickers for cheaper, you’d have to make many more sales: well over twice as many sales in many cases.

While this is possible to do, it isn’t easy.

A far more attainable strategy is to focus on quality and specificity instead of quantity.

Sticker Quality

Believe it or not, the pricing of your stickers primes your customers to make certain assumptions about your product.

A 50 piece sticker pack for $2 primes your customers to expect a large quantity of small, perhaps even low quality stickers.

A single sticker for $4 primes your customer to expect a thick, durable, weatherproof, quality sticker.

Price alone can help customers make this assumption, and you can further support this assumption by writing copy that emphasizes the quality of your stickers and by taking great pictures that show the quality of your stickers.

Of course, if your prices, copy, and pictures lead your customer to expect a high quality sticker, you had better deliver a high quality sticker to meet their expectations.

If you order vinyl stickers online from professional printers, your stickers should be high enough quality to sell for $4 a piece.

If you print your own stickers, there are multiple things you can do to produce high quality stickers that are worth $4 each. I am working on a post to explain this process, and I will link to it here as soon as it is finished.

Sticker Specificity

Specificity is another strategy you could use to sell stickers for $4.

Look back at the Baby Yoda sticker pack. This pack is a dream come true for anyone who loves Baby Yoda. If you have a listing for a $4 singular Baby Yoda sticker, you likely won’t be able to compete with this sticker pack.

But what if you made your sticker more specific? Instead of just featuring a simple Baby Yoda, it could be a particular Baby Yoda meme. For example, it could be my personal favorite Baby Yoda meme:

If you were to make a sticker of Baby Yoda with a spatula that is captioned, “6 year old me waiting for my mom to tell me to flip the pancakes” I would greatly prefer that one specific sticker over an entire 50 piece pack of random, less specific Baby Yoda stickers.

You can also make your stickers more specific by cross niching two separate concepts into one sticker.

For example, someone who loves Baby Yoda might also be a fan of Doctor Who. You can incorporate these two interests into one sticker by drawing Baby Yoda perched on the Doctor’s shoulder or peeking out of a TARDIS.

This sticker would be super attractive to someone who loves both The Mandalorian and Doctor Who. Making your sticker more specific by cross niching it would allow it to compete with more general Baby Yoda or Doctor Who stickers.

Disclaimer: I am using both Doctor Who and The Mandalorian as examples to cross niche simply because they are familiar concepts that are easy to understand. Never create Mandalorian or Doctor Who stickers without permission because these shows are copyrighted and doing so is illegal and could get your shop shut down.

Really, any two concepts can be crossed to create a cross niche. For example, one cross niche sticker I’ve created crosses worms with cowboys:

Sell Your Stickers for $3.99 to Capitalize on a Psychological Marketing Trick

I’m sure you’re familiar with going to the store and seeing products priced $19.99 instead of a simple $20 or $99.99 instead of a simple $100. Why would stores choose to use these uneven, weird numbers instead of their pretty, whole counter parts?

The answer is psychology, and I’d suggest you follow suit.

Brains process information quickly, so seeing a sticker for $3.99 instead of $4 might make a customer more likely to consider the sticker as a similar price to one priced anywhere within the $3 range. Just seeing the 4 can make a customer think of that sticker as more expensive even though it is only a penny more.

Your customers are not dumb, so they will not be “tricked” into thinking your stickers are less than they actually are. A customer who thinks long and hard about their purchase will likely treat your sticker as what it is: a $4 sticker.

However, those who are shopping less carefully and more impulsively may be subtly influenced by this marketing trick to perceive the sticker as cheaper and therefore be less concerned about buying it.

This strategy won’t dramatically increase your sales, but it may help influence a few shoppers, so why not go ahead and do it? Price your stickers at $3.99 and see what happens.
