What a Big Mac Cost the Decade You Were Born — Eat This Not That

Have you heard of the Big Mac Index? The Economist’s genius creation shows how various foreign currencies are valued against the U.S. dollar. For example, this past June, the magazine found that the British pound is “25% undervalued against the U.S. dollar,” because the exchange rate between the cost of a U.K. and a U.S. Big Mac is less than the actual exchange rate.

As it turns out, there’s a lot we can learn from the varying prices of Big Macs over the years. The burger’s price has risen with inflation over time, but it’s still a fairly affordable (and majorly unhealthy) fast-food sandwich. Here’s how the cost of a McDonald’s Big Mac has changed in the 53 years it’s been available.

And for more, don’t miss these 15 Classic American Desserts That Deserve a Comeback.

1960s: 45 cents

The Big Mac hit the fast-food scene in 1967, and it cost less than a dollar. The three-bread-pieces sandwich was created in Pennsylvania before becoming a part of the nationwide McDonald’s menu in 1968.

1970s: 65 cents

A vintage McDonald’s menu from the 1970s lists Big Macs for just 65 cents each. It’s an especially good deal when you think about the fact that an order of fries cost 46 cents, almost as much as the sandwich.

RELATED: The easy way to make healthier comfort foods.

1980s: $1.60, or $2.59 for a Big Mac Value Pack

By the 1980s, McDonald’s was focused on selling meal deals, not just individual sandwiches and sides. A Big Mac, fries, and a Coke would set you back just $2.59 in the ’80s, as this throwback ad so hilariously demonstrates.6254a4d1642c605c54bf1cab17d50f1e

And according to Seeking Alpha, a Big Mac by itself cost just $1.60 in 1986. Now that’s a bargain.

1990s: $2.45, or $4.59 for a Big Mac Extra Value Meal

A photo of a McDonald’s menu from the ’90s shows a Big Mac listed for $2.45, with a Big Mac Extra Value Meal listed at $4.59. And Seeking Alpha noted that the average price of a U.S. Big Mac was $2.50 in 1998. Ah, the good old days.

2000s: $2.39

According to a menu photo shared on Cockeyed, a Big Mac cost $2.39 in 2002. (That doesn’t necessarily mean it was cheaper than it was in 1998, though; the other figure was an average of prices from multiple cities, and it’s not clear what city that $2.39 is from.)

2010s: $4.19

The same post from Cockeyed shows a 2013 menu displaying a Big Mac for a $4.19 price point. That’s a pretty steep increase from the 2002 price!

2020: $4.95, or $7.89 for a Big Mac Meal

In New York City, at least, a Big Mac will cost you a solid $5 these days (and more, after tax). It’s still cheaper than a sit-down restaurant, but if you’re paying $7.89 for a Big Mac meal, you might be better off eating somewhere else.

Hamburger sold by McDonald’s

The Big Mac is a hamburger sold by the international fast food restaurant chain McDonald’s. It was introduced in the Greater Pittsburgh area in 1967 and nationwide in 1968. It is one of the company’s flagship products and signature dishes. The Big Mac contains two beef patties, trade secret Big Mac sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, and onions on a three-piece sesame seed bun.

History

The Big Mac was created by Jim Delligatti, an early Ray Kroc franchisee,[1] who was operating several restaurants in the Pittsburgh area. It was invented in the kitchen of Delligatti’s first McDonald’s franchise, located on McKnight Road in suburban Ross Township.[2]

The Big Mac had two previous names, both of which failed in the marketplace: the Aristocrat and the Blue Ribbon Burger. The third name, Big Mac, was created by Esther Glickstein Rose, a 21-year-old advertising secretary who worked at McDonald’s corporate headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois.[3]

The Big Mac debuted at the McDonald’s owned by Delligatti in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, on April 22, 1967,[4] selling for US$0.45 (equivalent to $3.66 in 2021).[4][5]

It was designed to compete with Big Boy Restaurants’ Big Boy hamburger; Eat’n Park was the Pittsburgh area’s Big Boy franchisee at the time.[6] The Big Mac proved popular and it was added to the menu of all U.S. McDonald’s restaurants in 1968.[5]

Product

The Big Mac consists of two 1.6 oz (45 g) beef patties, “special sauce” (a variant of Thousand Island dressing), shredded iceberg lettuce, American cheese slices, sliced dill pickles, and minced onions, served in a three-part sesame seed bun.[7] On October 1, 2018, McDonald’s announced that it would remove all artificial preservatives, flavors, and coloring from the Big Mac.[8]

The Big Mac is known worldwide and is often used as a symbol of American capitalism and decadence. The Economist has used it as a reference point for comparing the cost of living in different countries – the Big Mac Index – as it is so widely available and is comparable across markets. This index is sometimes referred to as Burgernomics.[9]

Special sauce

The name “special sauce” was popularized by a 1974 advertising campaign featuring a list of the ingredients in a Big Mac.[10]

Big Mac Sauce is delivered to McDonald’s restaurants in sealed canisters designed by Sealright, from which it is meant to be directly dispensed using a special calibrated “sauce gun” that dispenses a specified amount of the sauce for each pull of the trigger.[11]

In 2012, McDonald’s executive chef Dan Coudreaut released a YouTube video revealing the recipe of the special sauce. It consists of store-bought mayonnaise, sweet pickle relish and yellow mustard whisked together with vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika.[12][13][14]

In 2018, McDonald’s revamped the special sauce by removing potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, and calcium disodium EDTA.[8]

Packaging

The Big Mac, along with many other McDonald’s products, was first served in a collapsible cardboard container that was changed to a “clamshell” style styrofoam container in the late 1970s. Styrofoam containers were phased out beginning in 1990, due to environmental concerns.[15]

A 1974 advertising campaign featured a list of the ingredients in a Big Mac: “Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions – on a sesame seed bun.”[10]

In 2008 McDonald’s Malaysia revived the phrase. The revival includes the original prize of a free Big Mac if the customer is able to recite the phrase in under four seconds. It was released in May, along with the promotional Mega Mac, which has four beef patties instead of two.[16]

2005 advertising

In 2005, McDonald’s began offering product placement rewards to hip hop artists who namechecked the Big Mac in their music, giving US$5 to the artist for every time a song mentioning the hamburger was played on the radio.[17]

2019 EUIPO trademark revocation

McDonald’s sued the Irish fast-food chain Supermac’s for trademark infringement and claimed the name would confuse consumers in European markets.[18] On 11 January 2019, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) ruled in Supermac’s favor in what has been called a “David vs. Goliath” victory.[18] McDonald’s submitted a copy of the Wikipedia article about the Big Mac as part of its evidence, but the court found the Wikipedia page was not acceptable as “independent evidence”.[18][19]

Statistics in the United States

In 2007, Danya Proud, a McDonald’s spokeswoman, said that in the United States alone, 560 million Big Macs are sold each year. It means that approximately 17 Big Macs are sold every second.[20][21]

The Big Mac Museum in 2014

On August 22, 2007, McDonald’s opened the Big Mac Museum in North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania to celebrate the Big Mac’s 40th anniversary. The museum features the world’s largest Big Mac statue (measuring 14 feet high and 12 feet wide) and has hundreds of historic artifacts and exhibits that celebrate the Big Mac.[36][37]

Some Uniontown residents were unhappy with the selected location.[38]

McDonald’s at 75: How much would a Big Mac cost you in 1974?

How much should a Big Mac cost? Back in 1974 it was just 45p.

McDonald’s turns 75 today, but it opened its first branch in the UK on 13 November 1974 in Woolwich, south east London, and British dinners entering under the golden arches found some of the cheapest food many of them had ever encountered.

Hamburgers cost just 15p and cheeseburgers cost 21p.

The Mirror retrieved the first ever menu for the Woolwich branch and it shows many of the items have changed very little.

‘The United Tastes of America’ (McDonald’s)

The Big Mac and the Quarter Pounder – billed on the menu as being “for a larger appetite” – were both available back in 1974, while the precursor to today’s ‘fillet-o-fish’ appears to have been the ‘McMariner’.

A combined hamburger, fries and a shake was labeled ‘The United Tastes of America’ and cost 45p, and The McDonald’s apple pie – “as American as the fourth of July” – was also available.

The interior design of the Woolwich branch, which was in Powis Street, was simple, with wooden seating and an ashtray on every table, a feature that would go down much less well today.

The Metro reported that the company had wanted a West End location but “took what they could get”.

McDonald’s first UK branch was in Woolwich, south east London (McDonald’s)

In the decade following the establishment of its first London branch, McDonald’s expanded across the UK and its adverts were screened in cinemas and on television.

Inflation pushed its prices up, however, so that by the mid 1980s a hamburger cost 37p to take away and 43p to eat in. A cheeseburger cost 42p to take away and 48p to eat in.

McDonald’s celebrated its 75th birthday on Friday. The iconic chain opened its first branch in San Bernardino, California on 15 May 1940.

And in answer to the question, the 1970s Big Mac at 45p would be equivalent to £3.90 in today’s money.
