How Much Water To Put in a Hookah Base
How Much Water To Put in a Hookah Base by mehdi marrakchi
Hookah has been smoked for years, and is one of the most popular waterpipe smoking methods out there.
Water pipes like hookahs are so named because they filter their smoke through, you guessed it, water. In a hookah, this happens in the base or vase of the hookah, where a portion of the stem, called the down stem, sits in a pool of water.
But it’s not as simple as just putting any amount of water in your hookah and lighting it up. The amount of water in your hookah significantly affects your smoking experience.
It’s not always easy to know how much water to use in your hookah, it is something that many people forget to teach new smokers. If you never learned the proper water level for your hookah, then this is for you.
Here is a quick start guide to let you know how much water to put in your hookah base for the optimal smoking experience.
Why Is There Water in a Hookah in the First Place?
Well, the origin story of the hookah answers some of this question for us. The predominant origin story that we find for the advent of the hookah is in 16th century India, during the reign of the Mughal empire.
The Portuguese at this time were expanding their global trade network and transporting all sorts of goods all over the world. One of these goods was Brazilian tobacco, and there turned out to be quite the market for it in India. Tobacco spread through the port cities, and then through trade to the whole of India.
Eventually, Emperor Ahkbar was given tobacco by one of his ambassadors. The Emperor’s chief physician, Abul-Faith Galani, was worried about the health effects of smoking tobacco, and wanted to find a better way for the emperor to enjoy his gift.
His idea was the hookah, a water pipe that would filter the smoke through water before inhalation.
While it turns out that filtering the smoke through water isn’t really an effective way to filter out toxic chemicals or carcinogens, it is a good way to make the smoke less harsh and cool it down, leading to a wonderfully textured and more enjoyable smoke.
Can You Smoke Hookah Without Water?
Short answer, yes… but long answer, why would you?
The whole point of smoking from a hookah is to give yourself a delicious-tasting, smooth, and easy-inhaling smoke that doesn’t burn when you inhale.
If you have ever smoked a cigarette or cigar, then you are probably a bit familiar with the burn that you can get in your throat and lungs from hot smoke.
If you aren’t going to use water in your hookah, you may as well smoke a cigarette or cigar, as your smoking experience will become much closer to those anyway, and setting up a hookah is a pretty long process to not reap the full benefits.
How Much Water Should I Put in My Hookah?
The short answer is, you should cover about one inch of your hookah’s downstem with water.
Depending on your hookah base’s volume and the size of your hookah and downstem, this exact amount will vary.
For particularly short or small hookahs, you can get away with as little as half an inch coverage in water.
Submerging your downstem one inch in the water of the vase or base of your hookah will give you the best possible smoking experience.
What Happens If There Is Not Enough Water?
Since the exact amount of water that is necessary for a quality smoke session is going to change with every hookah you use, you should also understand the signs of having too much and not enough water in your base.
Let’s start with the symptoms of too little water.
If you have too little water in your hookah, you are going to have some of the same sensations that you might get from having no water in your hookah. You might notice that the smoke you are pulling gets harsher and hotter, perhaps even burning your throat.
Your first reaction to this sensation may be that your shisha is burning too hot, or it is time to rotate your coals. But if you find that rotating your coals is not helping to fix the problem, make sure to check the water level in your hookah, and consider adding more water to alleviate the problem.
You may also notice that the draw is more open than usual, meaning that it is easier to draw smoke on the hookah than normal. The water acts as a buffer for the air to travel through and when there is not enough, it can give you a more open draw.
What Happens If There Is Too Much Water?
If there is too much water, then you may notice that the draw on your hookah is much more closed than you are used to. When there is too much water, it can make drawing air into the hookah much harder with more resistance, and lead to difficulty producing smoke.
Another sign that there is too much water in your hookah is if you get water in your hose when you draw on the hookah. There should never be water entering the hose during a smoke session, and if it is happening to you, you need to let some of that water out.
You may also find that water gets into the bowl, which will dampen the shisha and prevent it from smoking. This can stop a good smoke session in its tracks.
So in summary — you should be covering your downstem between half an inch and one inch with water for the best smoke experience.
If there is too little water, your smoke will be harsh and hot, and the draw will be open. If there is too much water, the draw will be tight, and you may get water in your hose or bowl.
Final Tip
Here is one final tip for the water in your hookah from MOB Hookah.
The whole point of having water in your hookah is to cool down the smoke. So, an easy way to increase the cooling properties of the water is to put ice in your base with your water.
Adding ice will give an extra smooth, extra cool sensation to the smoke, which can be very pleasant. Just make sure that adding ice doesn’t significantly raise the water level in your vase. Even with ice, you should only have one-half to one inch of the downstem submerged to get a good smoke.
Hookah Water: The Takeaways
The water in your hookah base is the key part of the hookah that makes it a hookah.
The optimal level of water for your hookah is to submerge the downstem one-half to one inch in water.
If there is too much water you will have a tight draw and get water in your hose or hookah bowl.
If there is too little water, you will have a harsh and hot smoke that can put a burning feeling in your throat, and give you a suspiciously open draw.
For an added cooling effect, try using ice water in your hookah to cool the smoke even more before it enters your lungs.
MOB Hookah is here to support you in your hookah endeavors with the equipment, tools, and expertise you need to get a great smoke session every time.

Why Does a Hookah Need Water?
Why Does a Hookah Need Water?
What’s up Cloud 9 Fam! If you’ve ever smoked from a hookah before, you know that water plays a key role in providing smoke that’s dense, flavorful, and smooth upon inhale. Though you know that water is essential, have you ever wondered why a hookah needs water?
If that question has been heavy on your mental, don’t sweat it. Cloud 9 Smoke Co is going to teach you all you need to know about why a hookah does need water!
Let’s boogie in.
What Does the Water Inside of a Hookah Do?
When you’re with the homies and you’re prepping for a hookah session, one of the first steps you’ll take is filling the base of your hookah with water. After you’ve filled your hookah with water, and all other preparations have been completed, you’ll notice that when you pull from a hookah during a sesh, the water inside the base will bubble.
It only makes sense, right? You’re pulling air through the base of your hookah, and in turn, the air is creating bubbles inside of your hookah. Why does this happen? Do the bubbles inside your hookah do anything?
As you’re sucking air through the hose of your hookah, the bubbles and water in your hookah are working to cool, diffuse, and filter the smoke inside the base. The constant speed and contact your smoke has with air and water allows the smoke to lower in temperature and smoothen out in consistency, meaning that your throat and lungs will remain in good condition during a hookah session.
Imagine if your hookah didn’t have water inside of it. You’ve packed a bowl full of shisha, loaded up hot charcoal, and dry pull from the hookah without the aid of water in the process. More than likely, you’re going to experience a hit that’s extremely hot, harsh, and rather unpleasant. You’d be coughing up a lung, feeling as if your throat is on fire, and feeling as if you’ve inhaled chimney smoke opposed to the dense, flavorful, smooth smoke you’re used to.
Believe it or not, the water works to also moisturize the smoke to allow you to enjoy a hit that’s milky, dense, and thunderous upon exhale!
Why is the Water of Hookahs Beneficial?
Besides providing you with amazing hits, the water inside your hookah base has a pretty significant job to do! As your smoke is percolating through the stem and base of your hookah, the aeration and filtration process allows for your smoke to be reduced in the amount of byproducts your respiratory system is exposed to .
Sure, there’s no such thing as a healthy hookah session, because after all you are smoking tobacco leaves. However, the idea that you’ll be able to enjoy hits that will reduce your exposure to some byproducts can allow you to smoke comfortably during a hookah sesh.
Think about what the base of your hookah looks like after a session. Do you see a difference in the color of the water? Do you see remnants of pieces of ash and tar inside the water?
If you’ve answered yes to any of these questions, know that the reason why the water changes in quality is due to the fact that the water has worked to filter out some of the harsh chemicals and tar!
Do I Really Need Water Inside of My Hookah?
To simply answer this question, yes! You do need water inside of your hookah. Without water inside of your hookah, you’ll be left with hookah sessions that are not up to par and may leave you never wanting to use a hookah again. Think about inhaling super hot, dense smoke. It doesn’t sound appealing, right?
You’re exactly right! Water is the quintessential part of a hookah sesh because it allows us to enjoy dense, cool, flavorful clouds of smoke without feeling like we need to go to the emergency room after a hit. Believe us when we say that water is crucial to smoking from a hookah, and we highly recommend never trying smoking from a hookah without water inside the base!
Also consider how the water inside of your hookah base works to reduce the amount of harmful byproducts you’re exposed to during a session. Without water, you would have 100% exposure to every byproduct contained inside of the smoke. To us, it sounds like a lot of future doctor’s visits and unpleasant news. Nobody wants that! We want to be able to enjoy our extracurricular activities comfortably, and you can do that with water inside of your hookah’s base.
Why Does a Hookah Need Water? Now You Know!
Now that you have an understanding of what water does inside of your hookah base during a session, it definitely seems like a “no-brainer” to continue incorporating water into every hookah sesh! In case you forgot, we’ve got you covered with a quick recap of why a hookah does need water.
Hookahs need water because water works to cool and diffuse your smoke so you can smoke from a hookah comfortably. Without having water to cool and diffuse your smoke, you’d be left with extremely hot and harsh hits that may make you feel like you need to go to the hospital ASAP.
Hookahs need water because water filters your smoke to reduce the amount of byproducts you’re exposed to during a session. Think of routine doctor’s appointments, follow ups, and a lot of uncomfortable sensations you’d experience without water filtering out your smoke. No one wants that!
It’s safe to say that water inside of your hookah base is the key part of your hookah session that provides cool, filtered smoke for you to enjoy your hookah comfortably and safely. Without water, there would be no reason to have a hookah in the first place. Ya feel?
Always remember to keep your hookah’s base filled with water, smoke responsibly, and have fun during a session! If you ever need any hookah help or guidance, hit up our LiveChat. We have enthusiastic experts ready to help you along your hookah journey!

How Much Water Should You Put in Your Hookah Base
This post was updated on 12/19/2018
In order to have the best smoke each time you set up your hookah it is very important that you put just the right amount of water in your hookah base. Too much water and you will find it difficult to draw on the hookah. You also run the risk of getting water into your hose, or in a worst case scenario, your hookah bowl, which will ruin a good hookah session before it even gets started.
Not enough water in the base and you will get little to no filtration which will result in some of the hottest, harshest vapor you are likely to ever encounter. Don’t fret though, determining the correct amount of water to add to your hookah base is very simple.
5 Simple Steps To Determine How Much Water To Add To Your Base
Step 1: Assemble your hookah with no water in the base.
Step 2: Peer through the glass base and notate where the bottom of the downstem is. When you add water to your base you want to make sure that the bottom of the downstem is submerged anywhere between 1-2″ into the water. This is the ideal amount of water for maximum filtration without a restricted draw.
Step 3: Remove the stem from the base and add enough water to properly submerge your downstem.
Step 4: Place the hookah stem back into the base and confirm that the water level is correct. If you have added too much or too little water, repeat steps 2 and 3 until it’s perfect.
Step 5: Load your favorite flavor, light up some coals, and enjoy a fantastic hookah smoke!
A Few Helpful Tips
Not all hookahs are created equal, specifically when it comes to hookah base sizes and shapes. If you have a painted glass base which is not see-through, or a hookah with a particularly small, or oddly shaped base, these tips may help you out.
Tip # 1: If your base is painted or otherwise prohibits you from seeing inside, hold your hookah stem up next to the base at the same height it would sit naturally. By doing this you can see approximately where the bottom of the downstem will sit, thus allowing you to determine where the water in your base needs to be filled to.
Tip # 2: If you have a hookah with a particularly small base (such as a mini hookah, pumpkin hookah, and the like) there will likely not be enough room in the base for you to fully submerge your downstem underwater by 1-2″ as we recommend. In these cases, you can usually get by with as little as 1/2″ of the downstem underwater. If you fill the base with more water than that, you will likely end up with a wet hose or some soaked shisha.
Tip # 3: If you have a hookah with a long, slender neck at the top of the base (such as the Sahara Smoke Genie hookahs) be careful not to add too much water as it will restrict air flow and could lead to water getting in your hose or bowl. Make sure there is a gap between the spot where the neck of the base begins to taper and the top of the water in your base. Without sufficient space you will get a poor smoke from your hookah.
Tip # 4 – Once you have your water in the base you can attach your hookah stem to the base, attach your hose to the stem, and plug your bowl on top of the hookah. Give your hose a light inhale to draw air in to the hookah and listen for the water to bubble in the base. If the water bubbles normally and the airflow feels as it should then you are in good shape to go ahead and load your tobacco in the bowl and heat your coals for an awesome session.
