A new Pew Research Center poll says we apparently can’t get through the day without the internet.

Overall, 73% of Americans say they use the web “on a daily basis”. Of that number, one in five, or 21% report going online “almost constantly.”

42% say they use the web several times a day. And 10% go online about once a day. By age: 36% of 18 to 29 year olds say they spend most of their free time online.

Among people 65 and older, just 6% report going online that much.

The Pew Research Center says this is the first time it has included “almost constantly” as an answer option in its survey of internet usage. Their phone survey polled more than 2,000 Americans over two months last summer.

Common topics and model responses for IELTS speaking part 1.

In part one of the speaking test, you will be asked questions on 3 different topics. There could be up to 12 questions. It lasts about 4 to 5 minutes.

The topics are pretty general and are mainly about you. The aim of this part of the test is to get you to speak in a natural way without hesitation. If you are memorising answers or scripts, the examiner will notice that and you could lose points. Make sure you speak naturally.

Tips:

Don’t give one word answers or simple basic answers, however, it’s not necessary to go into too much detail with very long answers as this part of the test is only 5 minutes long. The examiner won’t lower your score for very long answers but it’s overkill for part 1. Part 3 is where you ought to be giving more details.

It really depends on the question you are asked. In some cases, you may need to go into a little more detail (4 or 5 sentences), but in other questions, one sentence answers might be enough. Use your common sense and give a natural full response to the questions.

Answer: When I have time off I prefer to either watch TV or chat with my friends online. I’m not an active person to be honest, so I’m not really into sports… and I’m just too tired for exercise or going to the gym.

No, I don’t own a computer, but I have a laptop. I do all of my work on the laptop, including writing notes, paying bills, reading papers, and playing games. I find that a laptop is more convenient and easier to use than a computer and that it does the same tasks.

Google.com is my favourite website because it is the largest and most famous internet search engine ( a software system designed to carry out web searches), providing information about everything in just a fraction of a second. Another reason I like google is that it helps me get a plethora of (a greater amount than you need) information on the topics which interest me.

Do you think children should be allowed unsupervised access to the internet?

No, I think children should be allowed to access the internet only under an adult’s supervision because there is dangerous content online. Besides, one can never rely on (=count on, depend on) the internet as there are so many wicked (=morally wrong) people around who take undue advantage of children.
