Lady Tremaine
Lady Tremaine is a fictional character who appears in the Disney film Cinderella , based on the eponymous tale by Charles Perrault . She is the main antagonist in Cinderella and Cinderella III: A Twist in Time , acting as the minor antagonist in Cinderella II: Dreams Come True .
She is the evil stepmother of Cinderella, a cruel, calculating, cold and ambitious woman. She is also the mother of Anastasia and Drizella Tremaine, Cinderella’s two evil stepsisters. She is a high class lady, elegant and very serious. When Cinderella’s father died, he left the entire fortune to Tremaine, his second wife. Gaining power, he made his stepdaughter Cinderella work on the toughest chores around the house.
Lifetime
Cinderella’s widowed father, married Lady Tremaine so that his daughter Cinderella could have the love of a second mother, since Cinderella’s mother, his first wife, died when Cinderella was still a little girl. Lady Tremaine has two daughters from a previous marriage with her deceased first husband (named in the remake as “Sir Francis Tremaine”), the same age as her stepdaughter Cinderella : Anastasia and Drizella Tremaine , these two daughters being hers a year younger and one year older (respectively) than his stepdaughter Cinderella.
However, after the sudden death of her second husband, Cinderella’s father, Lady Tremaine reveals her true character: cold and cruel. She inherits the estate and the house and all the money from her late second husband, which was originally to ensure the well-being of her stepdaughter Cinderella, her two daughters Anastasia and Drizella and herself, as well as to take care of the mansion, but ends up being wasted by her and her two daughters, the mansion falls almost into ruins, and Cinderella becomes the servant due to the jealousy of her evil stepmother and her two evil stepsisters for their beauty and charisma, knowing her evil stepmother that she surpassed that of his two daughters.
Years later, a ball is held to find a wife for the prince, which all the marriageable maidens of the kingdom must attend. Cinderella claims this right, and Lady Tremaine, instead of confronting her, tells her that she can go ‘as long as she finishes her tasks’. She and her two daughters enforce her orders throughout the day until it is time to go to the dance, so Cinderella cannot prepare her beloved late mother’s dress so she can attend the dance. However, the mice she was helping managed to prepare it, using some objects rejected by Cinderella’s two evil stepsisters. Seeing her come down dressed and ready to go, Lady Tremaine is amazed, but then realizes that the trinkets she is wearing belong to her two daughters.
But Cinderella manages to attend the ball with the help of her fairy godmother, and although her appearance was unrecognizable to courtiers, Lady Tremaine seems to recognize her when she sees her dancing with the prince.
The next morning he learns from a proclamation of Cinderella’s flight from the ball and of the king’s order to have all the maidens of the kingdom try his glass slipper to identify her. When he finds out, he returns to the mansion and tells his two daughters, and Cinderella, who was there. Seeing the reaction of the latter, and seeing her hum the song of the dance, he realizes that the mysterious princess of the dance was really his stepdaughter Cinderella and locks her in the attic, not caring how she could have managed to attend. However, neither of his two daughters manages to put on the glass slipper, and before the duke leaves after assuring him that no other maiden lived there, Cinderella appears.
Without giving up, not wanting her to become happy because of her increasing jealousy, she tries to prevent her from trying on the shoe, first by telling the duke that she did not attend the ball, and then by breaking the shoe. Believing to have won, she outlines a victorious smile, which transforms into an expression of horror when Cinderella takes out the other glass shoe, proving that it was she who danced with the prince and achieving her happy ending.
A frustrated Lady Tremaine blames her two daughters and sends them to replace Cinderella with housework, albeit with disastrous results.
In Cinderella II , her youngest daughter, Anastasia, falls in love with a baker. Obsessed with his status, she forbids him to see him arguing that he is lower class. However, Anastasia, with the help of Cinderella, manages to reunite with him. When his mother tries to separate them, she stands up to him defending her love, and attends Cinderella’s ball with him and, later, Anastasia and the baker marry, much to the annoyance of her mother and older sister Drizella.
In Cinderella III , Lady Tremaine takes possession of the magic wand of Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother and performs a spell to go back a year in time so that her daughter Anastasia will have the glass slipper on her foot. He also casts a spell on the prince so that in his memories at the ball he believes that he danced with Anastasia, and not with Cinderella. But their plans fail as Cinderella and her friends the mice Jaq and Gus manage to get the prince to regain his lost and erased memories with Cinderella. He then turns Anastasia into a Cinderella clone, but she at the altar says no, as she wants someone to love her for who she is. Then she casts another spell with the wand against Cinderella and Anastasia to turn them into frogs, but the prince with his sword manages to dodge the spell and falls in front of her and her other older daughter Drizella.
Appearance
Lady Tremaine, Cinderella’s wicked stepmother, is an elegant, middle-aged lady. His eyes are green and his hair is gray-gray. She normally wears a red dress that alternates with another purple dress. She always wears a green brooch on her chest and two large greenish pearl earrings. Once Upon a Time Reveals Rapunzel is Lady Tremaine
Once Upon a Time revealed Rapunzel’s (Meegan Warner) cursed identity and it completely changed the game.
It turns out that Rapunzel was actually the very young version of Lady Tremaine (Gabrielle Anwar) — meaning that her cursed identity is also Victoria Belfrey.
In flashbacks, Gothel (Emma Booth) found a young Rapunzel traipsing through her garden one night in search of food for her dying husband Marcus (Matty Finochio) and their two daughters, Drizella and Anastasia. When Rapunzel confessed she’d do anything to make sure that her family would have a better life, Gothel locked her in the infamous tower in the hope of proving that Rapunzel would have the true heart of the guardian — the one person able to take the Dark One’s power without killing him or turning evil themselves.
Rapunzel eventually used her hair to escape from the tower and make it back to her family. Six years had passed before she was able to return to them though and her daughters were nearly grown. Marcus had moved on by marrying Cecilia (Cindy Luna) and adopted her daughter, Ella (Alejandra Perez). Rapunzel was then forced to try and reconnect with her daughters as she watched another woman take her place in the family.
Meegan Warner, Once Upon a Time Jack Rowand, ABC
Mother Gothel arrived once more with another test for Rapunzel. She offered the distraught mother a way to get rid of Cecilia and make it easier to reclaim her place as matriarch of the family. Rapunzel initially refused to take the bait, but when Drizella — who was too young when Rapunzel initially left to have any warm and fuzzies about her return — refused to accept Rapunzel back into her heart, Rapunzel caved and used Gothel’s Wonderland mushroom to send Cecilia off running.
That could have made Rapunzel’s happy ending, but all magic comes with a cost. Later, Rapunzel and Marcus took all three of the girls to play on a frozen pond. The thin ice cracked and both Ella and Anastasia went tumbling through the ice. Marcus jumped in to save them but was only able to save Ella from the frozen depths. Rapunzel fetched her own daughter and took her frozen body to Mother Gothel who trapped the girl’s last breath to allow Rapunzel time to reawaken her. Instead of a thank-you though, Rapunzel locked Gothel herself in the tower where she’d eventually meet Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) — and you know how the story goes from there.
That’s an awesome backstory! But what does it mean for everyone in the non-magical Hyperion Heights still trying to figure out what’s going on?
For one thing, we now have a deeper insight as to why Victoria and Ivy (Adelaide Kaine) have such an icy relationship. Ivy, the Hyperion Heights version of Drizella, still feels bitter about her mother leaving the family when the girls were so young and Victoria favored Anastasia because Anastasia was the only one to welcome back Rapunzel as if nothing had ever happened.
In the more practical sense, Victoria teamed up with Weaver (Robert Carlyle) to get out of jail and was able to use her plight as a deceived mother to win Lucy’s (Alison Fernandez) sympathy. Once Lucy was on her side, Victoria dashed Lucy’s dream of her own family reunion with a video of Jacinda (Dania Ramirez) and Nick (Nathan Parsons) kissing, making it seem like there was no chance for Jacinda and Henry (Andrew J. West) to ever get back together. She conned Lucy into giving up her belief and then woke comatose Anastasia with Lucy’s tears. Again, all magic comes with a cost, so once Lucy’s belief was used to wake Anastasia, Lucy fell victim to some sort of sleeping curse in Jacinda’s arms.
Is it possible for Anastasia and Lucy to exist at the same time or will one mother have to give up a beloved daughter for the other? We’ll have to wait for those answers and more when the witches face off in next Friday’s winter finale.
Once Upon a Time’s winter finale airs next Friday at 8/7c.
Lady Tremaine
Fictional character
Lady Tremaine is a fictional character who appears in Walt Disney Productions’ 12th animated feature film, Cinderella (1950) and its direct-to-video sequels Cinderella II: Dreams Come True (2002) and Cinderella III: A Twist in Time (2007). In the original film, Lady Tremaine is voiced by American actress Eleanor Audley, who would later voice Maleficent, the evil fairy, in Sleeping Beauty (1959) and Madame Leota in The Haunted Mansion. For the sequels and subsequent film and television appearances, Audley was succeeded by American actress Susanne Blakeslee who also currently voiced Maleficent, Cruella de Vil, and the Evil Queen. She is given the title of Lady in the original film (her first and maiden name unknown).
Lady Tremaine treats Cinderella, her step-daughter, like a scullery maid and focuses all of her attention on her own two daughters, Anastasia and Drizella. She is based on The Wicked Stepmother character from the original fairytale by Charles Perrault. Lady Tremaine was animated by Frank Thomas.
In the 2015 live-action remake of the 1950 animated film, Tremaine is portrayed by Cate Blanchett and is given a backstory where she hears Ella’s father say that he loved his first wife more. This explains her hatred toward Cinderella.
Development [ edit ]
Animators Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas, in their book The Disney Villain, describe animating Eleanor Audley’s voice as “a difficult assignment but a thrilling one, working to that voice track with so much innuendo mixed in with the fierce power.”[1] Audley, who later performed as Maleficent, the evil fairy, in Sleeping Beauty, provided some live-action recording for both of these characters, to inspire the animators.
In contrast to the broad treatment given to some of the other characters, Lady Tremaine was animated in malevolent and subtle realism. A cruel, cold, and calculating tyrant, Lady Tremaine wants nothing more than her daughters to succeed. Unlike most Disney villains, who sport fiery personalities and desire power and the spotlight, she possesses a more cunning, subtle, passive-aggressive personality with a shrewd intelligence and ability for manipulation, particularly towards her daughters. She rarely yells, speaking in a calm, collected voice, even when angered. She wishes her daughters to succeed so that she may reap the benefits when it best suits her, although she becomes much more physically and emotionally abusive towards not only Cinderella, but also her two genetic daughters, as it becomes increasingly clear that she’s only using them to gain access to an opulent lifestyle in the Palace.
Appearances [ edit ]
Cinderella (1950) [ edit ]
In the animated film, where she is voiced by Eleanor Audley, Lady Tremaine is introduced in the prologue of the film. Cinderella’s father, a widower anxious for his daughter to have a mother figure, married Lady Tremaine, whom the narrator describes as “a woman of good family”. She was a widow herself, with two daughters from her first marriage. After an unspecified amount of time living happily together as a family, Cinderella’s father tragically died and Lady Tremaine revealed her true colors. She lets the chateau fall into disrepair while pampering her own selfishly spoiled daughters and forcing Cinderella to become a maid in her own home. Lady Tremaine allows Cinderella to attend the Royal Ball, on the condition that Cinderella finishes all her chores and finds a suitable dress. When Cinderella actually finishes her work and appears ready for the Ball in a suitable dress, Lady Tremaine mildly mentions the beads and sash that Jaq and Gus found after Anastasia and Drizella threw them out. Enraged, her daughters cruelly tear apart Cinderella’s dress, leaving her unable to attend the ball. When Cinderella, with the help of a Fairy Godmother, nevertheless attends the ball, her stepfamily does not recognize her, but Lady Tremaine notes a familiarity about her appearance as she dances with Prince Charming.
News promptly arrives by way of a Royal Proclamation that the Prince will marry the girl whose foot fits the glass slipper accidentally left behind by Cinderella at the ball. Lady Tremaine overhears Cinderella dreamily humming the song “So This is Love” as she heads to the attic, and realizes that she was the mysterious girl at the ball. Hoping to pass off one of her daughters as the mysterious girl, Lady Tremaine follows Cinderella up to the attic and locks her in her room, putting the key in her pocket. However, two of Cinderella’s mice friends, Gus and Jaq, steal the key from the stepmother’s pocket (after Lady Tremaine almost boils Gus in a tea cup) and succeed in returning the key to Cinderella, who rushes downstairs to the Grand Duke just as he and the footman are about to leave. Lady Tremaine attempts to convince the Duke that Cinderella is merely a lowly scullery maid who did not even attend the ball. But the Duke, who is required by the King’s Royal Proclamation not to skip a single maiden in the kingdom on his quest for the mysterious girl the Prince danced with, solemnly rebuffs Lady Tremaine. The Duke also finds Cinderella strikingly familiar to him. He proceeds to try the glass slipper on Cinderella. In a last-ditch effort to foil Cinderella’s dreams, Lady Tremaine trips the footman bearing the glass slipper, causing it to smash. She deviously grins with wicked satisfaction as the Duke wails in despair and fear of the King’s reaction when he finds out that the slipper was broken. But Cinderella still manages to come out on top by revealing that she has the other slipper, and that it fits her foot, proving that she is the girl who danced with Prince Charming, much to her stepmother’s appalled horror. Beyond a single brief close-up of her appalled face, the movie does not dwell on her defeat, how she and her daughters further reacted or what happened to them; instead there is only a quick resolution where Cinderella is shown as the Prince’s happy bride, her stepfamily out of the picture.
Cinderella II: Dreams Come True [ edit ]
In this film, where she is voiced by Susanne Blakeslee, Lady Tremaine only appeared in the An Uncommon Romance segment, where she plans to have both Drizella and Anastasia find wealthy suitors for Cinderella’s incoming ball. However, she finds out that Anastasia has fallen in love with a likable, slightly plump humble baker, and furiously forbids Anastasia to ever be with the baker as she hates commoners. Lady Tremaine and Drizella do everything they can to thwart this romance, but Cinderella encourages Anastasia to follow her own heart (which she does). In the end, Anastasia finally cuts all ties with Lady Tremaine to be with the baker, and Lady Tremaine furiously disowns her on the spot before leaving with Drizella.
Cinderella III: A Twist in Time [ edit ]
Lady Tremaine’s latest animated appearance is in this film, where she is once again voiced by Blakeslee. This time, she acquires the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand after Anastasia finds it after accidentally turning the Fairy Godmother into a statue. Still bent on ruining Cinderella’s life (in what she believes to be revenge), Lady Tremaine uses the wand to reverse time to undo Cinderella’s “happily ever after”; she manipulates the glass slipper to fit Anastasia so that Cinderella never gets to try on the slipper herself, then she brainwashes the Prince into forgetting Cinderella and marrying Anastasia. Even when Cinderella tries to set things right, Lady Tremaine uses the magic wand to thwart her efforts before having her send off from the kingdom on a ship.
Despite this, Prince regains his memories (thanks to the mice using the broken glass slipper as proof) and rescues Cinderella before telling the King of what really happened. As the King orders the arrest of Lady Tremaine and her daughters, Lady Tremaine makes one final attempt for revenge: having Anastasia to pose as Cinderella for the wedding while sending the real Cinderella to her supposed doom. However, Cinderella escapes witnesses Anastasia rejecting the Prince at the altar, feeling guilty that she can’t marry someone who doesn’t love her for who she is. Furious at Anastasia’s sudden conscience and Cinderella’s interference, Lady Tremaine emerges from her hiding place and begins turning some of the palace guards into farm animals. On Drizella’s advice, Lady Tremaine resolves to punish both Cinderella and Anastasia by turning them into toads, but the Prince defends the two from the spell and reflects it back with his sword, turning Lady Tremaine and Drizella into toads instead. Anastasia then gives the magic wand to Cinderella so that she can revive the Fairy Godmother and undo all the wrongs that her stepmother has committed.
During the end credits, Lady Tremaine and Drizella have been restored back to their human forms, but they are horrified to learn that they are holding brooms and wearing scullery clothes identical to those Cinderella used to wear, implying that they have been demoted to palace servants as punishment for their villainous actions.
Cinderella (2015) [ edit ]
In this film, Lady Tremaine is portrayed by Cate Blanchett. A woman of grace and refinement, she married Ella’s father for the sake of her daughters; shortly after her first husband Sir Francis Tremaine died. At first, Lady Tremaine did not seem to bear any particular animosity towards Ella, but her jealousy and spite was incited after overhearing a private conversation in which it was confirmed that her second husband loved his biological daughter more than he did her, and that he still cherished the memory of his first wife. After he died while on a business trip, Lady Tremaine was hurt and jealous that his dying words had only been of Ella and her mother. Revealing her true colors, she takes her jealousy out on Ella, firing all of the servants and forcing Ella to take up most of their duties. She even joins in her daughters’ childish taunting of Ella, and mocks her as “Cinderella”. When she and her daughters are getting ready to go to the ball, Ella comes downstairs at the last minute, wearing a gown of her mother’s. Lady Tremaine rips one of the sleeves and encourages her daughters to help her tear the dress apart. At the ball, she is as mystified as all the other guests when a mysterious girl in a blue gown enraptures Kit (the Fairy Godmother having cast an additional spell to prevent Ella’s step-family recognizing her), but realizes that it’s really Ella based on her attitude after the ball. The next morning, she discovers a glass slipper hidden in the attic. Knowing that the other slipper will fit Ella, she demands that Ella make her the head of the royal household and to ensure that Drisella and Anastasia find proper husbands. Ella rejects this out of hand, telling her that she isn’t about to let Kit fall into her stepmother’s clutches after she failed to protect her father. An enraged Lady Tremaine locks Ella in the attic and shatters the slipper. She then blackmails the Grand Duke into ensuring that she will become a countess and that her daughters will get wealthy husbands, in return for keeping the secret so that Kit can be married to a princess from another kingdom, as his father had originally intended. When the Captain finds Ella hidden in the attic, Lady Tremaine initially tells the Captain that as her mother, she will not allow Ella to try it on. Ella curtly tells her that she is not, nor will she ever will be, her mother. Ella leaves with Kit after forgiving her stepmother. The Fairy Godmother narrated that the Tremaines leave the kingdom with the Grand Duke never to return.

After the slipper fits Cinderella, Lady Tremaine gives into her fury once again and her negativity transforms Cinderella’s pumpkin coach into a giant Unversed, the Cursed Coach, who is then sent to murder the now-freed Cinderella. When Aqua jumps in and rescues Cinderella, the Cursed Coach accidentally drops a fire bomb in front of Lady Tremaine and her daughters, which explodes and (as revealed in Kingdom Hearts III) turns them into Heartless.
