What we know from canon is that the enlistment took place in 847. What we know from the official information translated by papermoon2 is that Mikasa, Armin, Eren, Historia, Jean, Connie were 12 when they entered the military; Annie, Sasha, Marco, Bertholt were 13; Reiner and Ymir were 14. We also happen to know when their birthdays are.

Originally, I took Berhtolt’s age at face value and just subtracted it from 847, but later I realized that, Bertholt’s birthday being on December 30, it was more likely that he was 13 because he wasn’t YET 14; he was turning 14 later the same year. And now this is a possibility we’ve got to keep in mind for a lot of people, including Armin! Because either Armin was 12 because the ceremony was after November 3, OR he was 12 because he hadn’t yet turned 13 on November 3.

Have I mentioned that this is a giant headache? 😀

In the enlistment chapter, Eren, Mikasa and Armin are shown to be working the fields in the winter (and the soldiers specifically mention winter) and a fellow labourer asks them if they’re going to join the military, since they’re old enough. Eren’s birthday is March 30, so, if he was born in 835, in January 847 he would still have been 11. Not yet old enough to join. And the very end of March doesn’t count as winter, surely? So maybe this is taking place in the later cold months of 847, November-December. If they’re all born in the same year, this would mean that Armin has caught up to the others in age and has just turned 12. So then the enlistment ceremony is, like, in December—everyone’s old enough, and Bertholt is still 13, but about to turn 14.

… This seems to square together, but it would put enlistment at the very end of the year, which sounds kind of weird to me, especially given that it doesn’t look at all like winter when they’re enlisting. Granted, maybe they’re that much further south…

The other option is that Eren was born in 834, and so he was already 12 in early 847. And Armin was 12 because he was also born in 834 and had recently had his November birthday. And Mikasa… whatever, let’s say they were all 834 kids; anyway, in this scenario, the enlistment ceremony has to happen at the very beginning of 847, before either Eren or Mikasa can turn 13. This option comes with several problems, one of them being that it presupposes that Eren has spent like a year working in the fields when he was already old enough to join the military. Even assuming that there’s only one time per year that you can join up… I’m somewhat sceptical.

Also, I’d just like to say that putting the recruitment ceremony early in the year screws up counting the birth years for, like, almost everyone, because most people in the 104th have their birthdays in the spring or summer.

Personally, I’d like it best if the enlistment ceremony was in, like, September (because it’s the usual start of studies, haha). This would make Armin 12-about-to-turn-13, and Bertholt 13-about-to-turn-14, but everyone else would be of an age that is easy to subtract from 847… 😀 However, the whole ~working the fields in the winter and being old enough to join up~ thing is kind of really putting a spoke in my wheel there. His retaliation against such pressures triggered all this fury, which led to a major introduction to the core of his traits. After Eren’s death, Armin recovers his lost memories of a conversation where Eren reveals his true plan, which was to have his friends being celebrated as saviors for killing him. As a result, all surviving Titans and Titan Shifters revert to human form permanently. Having destroyed most of the world’s population and assets, he helped to prevent any major attempt of retaliation against Paradis or the Eldian race. His head is buried under a tree in a place only known by Mikasa and Armin.

In the parody manga Attack on Titan: Junior High, Eren is presented as a junior high school student who is obsessed with the Titans.[38] In the visual novel Attack on Titan: Lost Girls an alternative take of the character shows his relationship with Mikasa, who fears that, regardless of changes in history, Eren is fated to die. He is a playable character in Attack on Titan: The Last Wings of Mankind for the Nintendo 3DS.[39] His Titan form also makes an appearance in the game.[40] Jin Haganeya’s visual novel Burning bright in the forest of the night has Eren and Levi as the leading characters. He also appears in the mobile game Granblue Fantasy.[41]
Eren also makes an appearance in the parody spin-off manga Spoof on Titan.

Following the manga’s ending, the newspaper Asahi Shimbun put a fake advertisement of Eren’s character becoming part of a manga from the isekai genre.[42]

Critical reception to Eren’s character has been varied. Jacob Hope Chapman of Anime News Network referred to Eren as “almost deliberately not a ‘likable’ protagonist, even by 15-year-old boy standards” due to reasons of being violent, impulsive, and not especially smart or strong. However, he liked that he inspires people by believing in his feelings, hopes, and dreams, making him the “heart of humanity”.[43] Theron Martin noted that while Eren initially has hardly any emotion besides anger,[44] in later episodes he eventually does have emotions beyond that.[45] Jeffrey Kaufman of Blu-ray.com calls Eren “a compelling character, and once a really surprising development crops up a few episodes in, he becomes even more compelling.”[46] Ken Iikura Anime Now highly acclaimed Eren for the way his emotions are shown in the series due to his constant rage regarding his desire to take vengeance for the Titans who ate his mother as well as his reaction to the discovery of the two Titans who have been posing as his friends. As a result, Iikura said Eren was more appealing due to his emotions rather than the powers he reveals across the series to fight.[47] While acclaiming the episode “Warrior”, the site MANGA.TOKYO praised Eren’s interactions with Reiner and Bertolt due to the two latter characters opening themselves to Eren as enemy Titans but the three remains as calm until their eventual fight.[48]
Kyle Charizanis of The Fandom Post found the anime portrayal of Eren’s transformation to be amusing, starting from his “almost pitiful” look while declaring how he’s going to kill all of the Titans. When the anime portrays him as capable of controlling his transformation, Charizanis adds “Maybe one day he’ll be able to contort his body to be used as a bridge, or heal other people’s wounds, or morph his arms into sharp blades like a certain other anime character.”[49] In the final anime episode, when Eren is fighting the Female Titan, he describes Eren’s internal monologue as changing “from the usual violent determination to a kind of gleeful madness.” and likens his tone to that of The Joker.[50] Elijah Watson from Complex magazine liked the plot twist of Eren’s titan form turning on the other titans that he called it a Worldstar moment.[51] Bamboo Dong of Anime News Network was fond of Eren’s Titan abilities as “there has not been anything as uncomfortable for me to watch as Eren chomping into his own hand, trying to transform. There is something visceral and real about Eren drawing blood from his own hand, and boy, it gave me the chills,” and later praised his thoughts when fighting the Female Titan due to the portrayal of Eren’s humanity despite being a Titan.[52][53]
Other writers were more critical on the character. Nicoletta Browne of THEM Anime Reviews found him “a frustrating protagonist” based on how his angry fits and exclamations “can be seen as highly childish”.[54] Elliot Gray from Japanator called him a “typical shonen manga lead” and instead found Mikasa and Armin more appealing.[55] Similarly, Anna Neatrour from Manga Bookshelf called him “in many ways a fairly typical brash and opinionated shonen hero” and considered the manga design of the humans to be “drawn stiffly and not in proportion. For much of the time Eren and his comrades are yelling at each other, with facial expressions that don’t have very much variation”.[56] On the other hand, Justin Wu from The Artifice saw Eren’s hotheadness as a positive trait of the character.[57] Chapman found Papenbrook’s child Eren forced but noted his performance once the character grew up was far better.[13]
IGN found Eren started to have a notable character arc in the anime’s third season as he learns from his past thoughts, but found it painful in comparison to other characters due to how harsh Eren is with himself.[58] MangaTokyo acclaimed Eren’s growth across the anime series’ until the finale of its third season due to how he realizes the amount of enemies he has to face changing from having angry tantrums to a more collected mind seeking the freedom of his people.[59][60] The Fandom Post noted that one of the major twists of the third season was discovering the relationship between Eren and Zeke, but lamented the narrative to focus more on Erwin and Armin rather than Eren and Mikasa.[61] Another reviewer praised how the development of the characters and discovery of the truth behind Grisha also reflected on the childhood moments from Eren, Mikasa and Armin.[62] For the final arc, Den of Geek and IGN noted that while Eren becomes a darker character due to his harsh interactions to Mikasa and Armin to the point he comes across as a fallen villain with Zeke being the apparent cause.[63][64] IGN still remained ambiguous when he talks to Mikasa in a flashback about their bonds.[65] The Fandom Post commented despite his aggressive comments, Eren’s new characterization might include lies as some generate a major impact on Mikasa’s feelings for her.[66] His appearance as the Attack Titan in the final frames of the opening of the anime’s final season were compared to that of Hideaki Anno’s Shin Godzilla movie (2016) by Anime News Network due to how threatening it looks.[67]

In the Newtype anime awards for 2013, Eren was voted as eighth best male character.[68] In Animage’s Anime Grand Prix 2014 polls, Eren ranked as the fourth most popular male anime character, behind Levi who was voted the most popular. However, his Japanese voice actor ranked first among all voice actors, with Eren as his primary credit for that period.[69] In the Animedia Eren was nominated for multiple categories including “Most Valuable Player”, “Darkness”, “Hot” and “Brave”; He only won the “Hot” award, but took high places in the rest.[70] Anime News Network also listed his Titan form as one of the weirdest power ups seen in anime.[71] In a Newtype poll, he was voted the 10th most popular male anime character from the 2010s.[72] In July 2021, he once again appeared in the Newtype polls.[73] At the 6th Crunchyroll Anime Awards, Eren won the award for Best Antagonist, while also being nominated for both Best Protagonist and “Best Fight Scene”. The character’s voice actor Yuki Kaji won the award for “Best VA Performance (JA)”.[74][75]
Eren is featured in a variety of merchandise. In December 2013, the Good Smile Company released the Eren Picktam! strap along with straps of other characters from the series.[76] The official Eren Yeager nendoroid and figma were also launched after the series’ success. These figures exist via a variety of figurine and merchandise companies. Eren’s figma was released in May 2014, and the nendoroid was released in April 2014.[77] [78] In addition to figures, Bandai has released Eren plushes, a smaller one in December 2013 and a larger one in July 2014.[79][80] Eren Yeager, along with many other characters from the series, also has a dedicated perfume inspired by his character traits. His perfume was released by Koubutsuya in fall of 2013 along with the perfumes for Mikasa Ackerman and Levi.[81][82] In an Akiba Souken poll, Eren was voted as the most popular character from the series with 50,143 votes.[83]

Other character ages have to be based on context and comparison to the rest of the characters in the series.

Eren Jeager is only 15 years old when the main events of season 1 occur, but 10 when his hometown is attacked. There is a 4-year time skip between seasons 3 and 4, making Eren 19 by the time he is seen again in season 4.

The same applies to Mikasa Ackermann, Armin Arlelt, and most of the other 104th Training Corps cadets who joined the Corps at 15. However, not all of them made it to season 4.

Eren Jeager – March 30th

Born on March 30th, Eren Jeager is 15 years old during most of seasons 1 – 3, set in 850. This then makes him 19 in season 4 after the 4 year time skip in which Eren underwent a substantial growth spurt, growing from 5’7″ (170.2 cm) to 6″ (182.9 cm).

When season 1 begins with Eren’s hometown being attacked in 845, he is only 10 years old, and Eren swears revenge on the Titans responsible for his mother’s death.

So, once season 1 is in full swing, he joins the 104th Survey Training Corps at 15 years old in the year 850.

Mikasa Ackermann – February 10th

Mikasa Ackermann joins the Training Corps at the same time as Eren at 15 years old, though she is a month older than him, born on February 10th. Like Eren, Mikasa is 19 years old once season 4 starts.

Out of all the characters, Mikasa is often thought to be older than she is. From the moment she is introduced in season 1, she is very emotionally mature and acts more level-headed than many of the adult characters.

Armin Arlelt – November 3rd

Like his friends, Armin is 15 years old when he joins the Training Corps in season 1. This makes him 19 years old in season 4.

Armin’s maturity is clearly shown in his character’s physical appearance change between seasons 3 and 4.

When we see him again in season 4, his hair is shorter, and he looks more mature despite only growing an inch in 4 years (5’4″ – 5’5″).

Levi Ackermann – December 25th

Although Levi is short 5’2″ (157.5 cm), the writer and illustrator of the Attack on Titan mangas (Hajime Isayama) confirmed Levi to be in his early 30’s during season 1. His shortness is all the more evident in season 4 when he is in his late 30’s and is still only 5’2″.

Levi is an important commanding officer with much experience fighting and protecting against the Titans despite his height.

Bertholdt Hoover – December 30th

As an upper-classman to Eren in season 1, Bertholdt Hoover is 17 years old. In season 4, he is 21.

During most of season 1, Bertholdt is often overlooked despite his height. But once he is discovered to possess the Colossal Titan, he becomes a more prominent character.

At 17 years old, he is not as naive or persuadable as some of the younger characters, affecting his story arc.

Hange Zoë – September 5th

Compared to other leaders in the series, Hange Zoë is estimated to be slightly younger. In season 1, they are approximately in their early 30’s, reaching mid 30’s in season 4.

Hange clearly has some experience under their belt as the leader of the 4th Squad for most of seasons 1-3.

While not as strong as their fellow Corpse leader Levi, Hange is declared the 14th Commander of the Scout Regiment after Erwin Smith’s death.

Historia Reiss – January 15th

In season 1, Historia Reiss joins the 104th Training Corps making her the same age as Eren – 15 years old and then 19 years old in season 4.

Despite being one of the younger characters on the show, Historia is constantly praised by fans for her emotional resilience. She was still only 15 years old when crowned Queen in season 3.

Erwin Smith – October 14th

Based on some flashbacks, Erwin Smith is one of the oldest characters in Attack on Titan. He is estimated to be in his late 30’s during season 1 but is killed in season 3.

Erwin is already an established Commander of the Scouts when Eren joins the 104th Traning Corps in season 1. He is older than lower leaders like Levi, but not significantly.

This is all but confirmed when he is shown to have been in grad school (later teens – early 20s) when his father died around the year 825; this is 25 years before season 1 starts.

Sasha Braus – July 26th

Sasha Braus is first introduced to the series when Eren joins the 104th Training Corps in season 1 as part of the same group. Therefore, she is 15 in season 1 and 19 in season 4.

Unfortunately, Sasha isn’t able to make it past 19 years old as she is shot and killed in season 4.

Connie Springer – May 2nd

From the moment Connie Springer is introduced at 15 as part of the 104th Training Corps in season 1, he is used as comedy relief. This doesn’t change even when he turns 19 going into season 4.

Connie’s comedy case isn’t helped when he suddenly grows from 5’2″ in season 3 to 5’9″ in season 4. If anything, it just makes his incompetence even more hilarious.

Jean Kirschtein – April 7th

Starting season 1 at 15 years old, Jean Kirschtein joins the 104th Training Corps at the same time as Eren. He is 19 when season 4 begins.

Jean is one of the more hot-headed characters of the show, especially in the earlier seasons where he and Eren do not get on well together. He does seem to mature as the series progresses.

Reiner Braun – August 1st

Like Bertholdt, Reiner Braun is a few years older than the main cast in season 1 at 17 years old and 21 in season 4.

Reiner has had his Armored Titan for a lot longer than most of the other Titan shifters. Though he has always been a skilled cadet, having been picked to join the Marleyan Warriors as a child.

Zeke Jeager – August 1st

Zeke Jeager is not introduced until season 2, but he looks to be about 25 by the time he appears. That makes him 29 during season 4.

Part of his age estimation is based on his connection to Eren. Zeke is Eren’s older half-brother, related by Eren’s father Grisha Jeager.

There is a few years difference between Zeke and Eren, which makes sense regarding Grisha’s relationship timeline with various women.

Ymir – February 17th

Despite being born years before season 1 starts, Ymir is in her late teens when introduced in season 1. In season 4, she is technically in her early 20’s.

Ymir was transformed and stuck as a Titan when she was an early teen. She then spent the next 60 years as a Titan, only turning human again in the year 845.

When she was human once more, it was as though she hadn’t aged. So when she is introduced in season 1 (850), she looks to only be in her late teens.

Kennedy Ackermann – Feburary 4th

Kennedy Ackermann is one of the older characters in Attack on Titan. When he is introduced and killed in season 3, he seems to be in his early to mid-40’s.

This is based on a few scenes we see of him pre-season 1, in the year 829, which is 21 years before the main events of season 1.

During these scenes, he looks significantly younger, estimated to be in his early 20’s.

Annie Leonhart – March 22nd

In season 1, Annie Leonhart appears to be a year or so older than Eren and his friends at 16 years old. But how old she is in season 4 is unclear.

Annie was still frozen in her crystal cocoon entering season 4. Technically, she would be 20 years old, but it is unclear if she can age while frozen.

Marco Bodt – June 16th

As a member of the 104th Training Corps in season 1, Marco is the same age as Eren: 15 years old. He is a few months younger than Eren, born on June 16th.

Marco is not lucky enough to make it to season 4, dying at 15.

Floch Forster – October 8th

Another member of the 104th Training Corps, Floch is 15 years old in season 1. He is still alive in season 4, too, reaching 19 years old.

Miche Zacharius – November 1st

Miche may not be as strong as Levi or as high up in the Corps’ ranks, but he is a skilled Titan tracker. This skill was fine-tuned through years of experience, hence why he is estimated to be older than Levi.

Moblit Berner – April 24th

Based on his rank and secure place in the Survey Corps, Moblit Berner is in his early 30’s during seasons 1 – 3. However, he sacrifices himself to save Hange during season 3.

There has been much speculation about Molbit and Hange’s relationship amongst fans ever since season 1.

Molbit was Hange’s vice-captain, but their interactions and his unwavering sacrifice led fans to believe that there was a romantic element to their relationship.

Petra Rall – December 6th

Though one of the smaller adult characters in Attack on Titan (5’2″ – 157.5 cm), Petra is still significantly older than the 104th Training Corps during season 1 in her early 20’s.

Petra was hand-picked by Levi to be part of his Special Operations Squad. But her rank and overall treatment within the Corps puts her a few years younger than Levi.

Their age difference didn’t hinder their romantic relationship, which was confirmed after Petra’s death in season 1.

Dot Pyxis – September 13th

Dot Pyxis’ is undoubtedly one of the older leaders to appear in Attack on Titan already in his late 40’s when season 1 starts. This makes him in his 50’s in season 4.

Unlike some of the older characters in the show, Dot’s age is clear from his appearance. His greyed mustache and wrinkled face reflect his time as a senior leader of the Garison Regiment.

Gabi Braun – April 14th

When Gabi is introduced in season 4, she is only 12 years old – one of the youngest main characters to appear in Attack on Titan.

Falco Grice – February 10th

He is the same age as Gabi, though slightly taller, standing at 4’7″ (139.7 cm) compared to her 4’6″ (137.2 cm). Falco is also a few months older than Gabi, born on February 10th, whereas Gabi’s birthday is April 14th.

Lara Tybur – April 3rd

A minor character to appear in season 2, Lara Tybur is roughly in her mid 20’s but died in the same season.

Like many of the Attack on Titan cast, Lara’s minor role has major effects. She was in possession of the War Hammer Titan, which Eren then inherits, setting many events into motion.

Freida Reiss – February 2nd

Though her story is told in season 3, Freida Reiss died at 18 years old before the event of season 4 began.

Freida was in possession of the Founding Titan when Grisha Jaeger pleaded with Freida to help him. When she disagreed, Grisha attacked Freida with the intent to steal her Titan abilities.
