While every boat model has a differently thick hull side, we think it is important to learn what materials and process Sportsman Boats uses to build your hull.

The outside layer component of a boat is called gelcoat which is a pigmented layer of resin. Gelcoat is one single tough layer. This allows it to be sanded and buffed throughout its life to bring back the original finish.

Once the gelcoat has been sprayed on the mold, to ensure proper thickness and consistency, a quality technician takes measurements using a mill gauge. This is a small metal tool that allows our team to measure the thickness of the gelcoat. Proper thickness of gelcoat is key. Improper thickness can cause gelcoat to be translucent or brittle. The results are closely recorded using a tablet at each of the quality stations.

The skincoat layer follows the gelcoat and is a big defense against water penetration. Sportsman Boats use a vinal ester resin, which is tough and resists blistering. To finish this layer, the team will use special rollers called “bubble rollers” which are small, spiked tubes, to remove any air that was trapped between the first and second layer. This prevents any air voids in the future.

The next step consists of various composite materials which are added to the construction. The hull sides receive a full layer of hi-density PVC foam coring. This is great for sound dampening and adding rigidity to the boat. To finish off the lamination process, bulk fiberglass pre-cut to each unique boat is hand laid. This step helps to ensure proper thickness across the hull.

The coring foam offers strength and rigidity at a significantly higher level than fiberglass alone. (The image above shows a demonstration of coring foam’s strength and does not reflect the amount of coring board in any of our boats. It is simply for demonstration purposes.)

One of the most importance pieces of composite material is at the transom. This area feels the stress and weight of the boat’s engines. In this area, we use a no-rot composite material called Coosa board. It will never rot, mold, or mildew.

These materials significantly strengthen the boat while providing better performance and reducing the overall weight. Each boat will have a different level of necessary thickness, but rest assured, our team of qualified engineers and technicians ensure each boat is built correctly and safely so you and your family can enjoy your peace of mind and time while out on the water.

This is because boats are actually fairly complicated structures, and they are designed for the internal structure, the shape of the bottom, and the speed of the boat. It takes engineering analysis and a series of calculations to figure out a boat laminate.

Having said that, however, a fairly good guideline to refer to is Dave Gerr’s book “Elements of Boat Strength.” This is not an engineering guide per se, but it will illuminate some of the science that goes on in engineering of boat structures.

I have one more question which was related to the first queries. How accepted is wood/ composite construction in North America. Our current boat uses 10mm thick cedar strip planks with 2 layers of fiberglass cloth on both sides,and West system Epoxy on the outside. adding about 7-8 mm to the thickness. The Duflex Balsa composite board bulkheads are 22 inches apart from each other. In Australia this construction is widely accepted but i am worried that this is not the case in North America. One would argue that our fiberglass is too thin, but our trial test in the water have proven otherwise.

So I am trying to make a test panel to compare the impact strength between the panel that reflects our current construction and the Fiberglass panel. But i am just not sure how thick the fiberglass panel should be.. AndamanSS, #3 Joined: Dec 2001

You can get Elements of Boat Strength in many places, one being www.amazon.com which is an on-line book seller here in the US. They will ship anywhere. That book will likely give you enough guidance to compare laminates. Another resource that you might consider is High Modulus in New Zealand. They supply composite materials for many composites industries, including both production and high-tech custom boats. They can probably give you a closer idea of a suitable fiberglass laminate that would work in your boat based on a description of the boat.

Here in the US, wood-epoxy is very well known, although you would most likely find it in custom boats, do-it-yourself boats, or limited production boats. The vast majority of production boats here in that size would be solid fiberglass on the bottom and perhaps cored fiberglass on the sides and deck. Foam core is probably the most popular, although balsa is very common. On my CC20 speedboat design for Cherubini Yachts, the whole boat is solid fiberglass with the bottom being about 5/16″ to 3/8″ thick (8-10 mm). It has a mix of mat on the outside, and various layers oriented at 0/90 deg and +/-45 deg. Boat speed is mid 40 knots, although one version has been up to about 60 knots. Fiberglass thickness depends a lot on the speed of the boat and the size and orientation of the internal framing–we have a lot of structure in the bottom of the CC20.

Thickness Gaging of Fiberglass Boat Hulls

Background: Fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) is used extensively in the boating industry for both work boats and recreational craft. Boat manufacturers and marine surveyors need to obtain accurate hull thickness measurements. In the past, unless there was a place to put a micrometer, there was no way to determine thickness except to drill a hole in the hull. Modern ultrasonic thickness gages, however, make it easy to check the thickness of boat hulls.

Ultrasonic thickness measurements are particularly useful with fiberglass mat/roving lay-ups. Variations in layer thickness make it necessary to periodically check thickness. Sometimes boat hulls are made of fiberglass skins sandwiched around an inner core of balsa wood, cork, or foam. In those cases, the core material makes it impossible to make total hull thickness measurements, since it does not transmit ultrasound, but the outer fiberglass layers can be measured very effectively with ultrasonic equipment.

Equipment: The Olympus 38DL PLUS® with the High Penetration software option and 45MG with High Penetration software are portable gages capable of making digital thickness measurements on fiberglass. They are commonly used with an M2008 transducer (500 kHz) to maximize the penetration of ultrasound in thick or attenuating fiberglass, providing a thickness measurement range of approximately from 0.150 in. to 3 in. (4 mm to 75 mm), depending on the type of fiberglass. In especially challenging cases, the advanced 38DL PLUS thickness gage with the high penetration transducer option and large waveform display is recommended. This configuration enables operators to adjust setup parameters on site. Transducers such as the M1036 (2.25 MHz) or M109 (5 MHz) can measure down to approximately 0.050 in. (1.25 mm) in fiberglass.

Procedure: The 38DL PLUS gage with the HP option and the 45MG gage with the HP option both have pre-programmed default setups for the two transducers most commonly used for fiberglass measurement, the M2008 and M1036. In many cases, these default setups can be used with no further adjustment, just the two-point velocity and zero calibration that is recommended for all ultrasonic thickness measurements.

The fiberglass used in boat construction is generally of high quality, and unlike some other fiberglass laminates it usually does not produce high amplitude internal reflections that can cause false readings. However, if false readings are observed in a particular case, the situation can usually be corrected by small adjustments of the initial gain and TDG slope as outlined in the gage operating manuals. The 38DL PLUS thickness gage waveforms below show a typical hang up on internal reflections, and a correct reading of total hull thickness following a simple gain adjustment.

Any delaminations that may occur in the hull will appear as strong, well-defined reflectors accompanied by a complete loss of the back wall echo. While ultrasonic flaw detection should always be performed with instruments specifically designed for that purpose, such as the EPOCH® series, a trained operator can use the waveform display of the 38DL PLUS and 45MG gages to make initial judgments about the presence of delaminations in a hull. Gelcoat measurement: A closely related application is measuring the smooth gelcoat applied over fiberglass.
