Faux Fur Wolf Tail!
Faux Fur Wolf Tail!A fluffy wolf tail is a fun dress up prop or addition to a big bad costume!Faux fur is actually quite easy to work with if you know the tricks. When cutting faux fur…or fur for that matter, only cut the backing, that will leave the fur long and natural.Otherwise you will get “Bad Haircut” blunt chunks.Take little nips with the scissors across the back to cut the size of tail you want.Fold fur in on itself in half.Sew along the edge, tucking the fur inside as you go.Sew it down to a point at the end. Then roughly cut the fur about a 1/2 inch away from the sewn line.Flip the tail right side out!Use a stick or pen to reach inside and push the end out completely! Now add some batting. Not a lot…unless you want it to stick straight out!Whipstitch the end closed with a needle and thread.Voila!Perfect tails! Now you can just safety pin them on the backside of your wolf. It’s easy to pin them through a belt loop…if you have some.Perfecto!Great for a big bad wolf costume!Or just for fun!Matches our wolf hat from Target a few yearsago…could probably DIY one too!
Giant squirrel tail
Thanks so much for such a thorough, helpful response!
The Worbla/Wonderflex idea is an interesting one, but I could see that getting pretty pricey, and I wouldn’t want to completely reconstruct the tail. Unless you meant just putting the support in the base, which would be doable – it’s sewn together pretty shoddily (it’s hard sewing fur!), so I could always rip that apart and shove something in there. I’ll have to think on this some more! I guess my biggest concern would be making sure the support isn’t noticeable underneath the leotard (and I’m not exactly skinny, so I wouldn’t want it add more bulk).
I would prefer the tail to be removable, on the off chance I need to drive or use the bathroom or something, so I wouldn’t want to sew it on (and honestly, I’m not sure how easily it would be to sew it on, since I had so much trouble just sewing it shut). I’m okay with having the top the way it is now, because as long as the bottom detaches easily, I can just swing it sideways to sit – though making it completely detachable (and easily attachable) would certainly be nice.
I had actually left the crotch unsewn and added snaps, but the placement was bad and since I was short on time, I just ended up removing them and sewing it shut. I’ll probably try to add them back in at some point (or a zipper), because if I need to use the bathroom… the entire thing has to come off, haha. Fortunately I did think ahead and bought a separate top and leggings instead of a full unitard. As for the opening, right now it’s in the back (the hole the harness strap goes through is right under the zipper end) and I don’t know if I’d want to move it to the side instead. I could see that making it easier to put on, but I don’t really trust my sewing skills (i.e. I don’t want to accidentally ruin the unitard and have to remake it.. for a third time).
I do really like your button idea. I’d worry that a circle button might just slip out, but if I got one that was more oval shaped, or even rectangular… hmm… that might possibly work! 😀
[Help] Attaching a heavy tail to a dress : cosplay
Though my costume is not nearly as fancy as the ones on this subreddit, I’m hoping that you all can help me. For Halloween I’m dressing up as a dinosaur. I made the head piece and the tail, and then I’m just wearing a black dress.
The tail is pretty long, about 3-4 feet and is filled with stuffing. I’ve been trying to attach it to my dress, but nothing seems to work. The dress is a pretty light material, so it definitely cannot support it alone. I have also tried belts with it and they work okay, but the tail still droops quite and bit and is not flat against my back.
I’ve attempted adding some wire in it, but that didn’t seem to do much. Any suggestions that you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
