11 Ways to Be a Good Partner for an INTJ in Life and at Work

INTJs are the “Architect” or the “Mastermind” type of Isabel Briggs Myers’ personality types. They belong to one of the rarest groups in the population, comprising only 2% worldwide. INTJ females are especially rare with only 0.8% of the world population, making it hard to find like-minded individuals and be understood by people around them.

In general, INTJs are rational, confident, original, idealist, curious, decisive, privately ambitious, mysterious, and strategic. However, they can be bitter and cynical when the surrounding isn’t accommodating, such as “full of lazy and self-serving people.” If you happen to meet an INTJ and have him or her as a partner in life and at work, consider yourself fortunate. You’ve got yourself a loyal and highly capable confidante.

INTJs have a keen interest in anything intellectual, and they’re proud of their “nerdiness,” even during their childhood. They are confident of their massive bodies of knowledge and love sharing what they know with people who want to listen. However, due to their Intuitive (N) and Judging (J) traits, they prefer to remain private when executing strategies than being overly public about their plans.

Now, if you have an INTJ partner, what should you do and expect?

1. Share your long-term vision.

Do so in a way that’s favorable to them, such as offering them to take part actively in materializing that vision. As one of the most confident MBTI types, INTJs appreciate confident and visionary individuals who know where they’re heading and what they’re getting into early on in a relationship. So, be open with them on your vision about the relationship. It’s the first step to earn the trust and respect from an INTJ.

2. Be prepared to keep up with their formidable logic and willpower.

INTJs are one of the most logical types, whose insightful observations and original ideas can be quite surprising and powerful. Combined with their forceful personality and mysterious aura, they have the capability to deconstruct and reconstruct conventional ideas. A good relationship with them can be quite transformative in the long run.

3. Understand their complex minds.

INTJs have complex minds and are often misunderstood. Take the time to get to know them in person, bond with them, and understand how their beautiful minds process information. They appreciate deep questions and are always happy to share information and “show” people “the right way” in doing things. Once you’ve understood them fully, you’ve earned their lifelong respect and can tap into their knowledge at any time.

4. Discuss the future.

INTJs live in the future. They don’t waste time being melancholic after an adverse incident. They like to think about the future, so ask them what they think about the future of your business or personal relationship. In one year? In 5 years? In 10 years? Being a rational person, INTJs take into account the macro situations of a relationship, such as the economy, politics, and approvals from people around them.

5. Ask them about their “theory” on everything.

INTJs’ complex minds continuously work in a way that most people don’t, such as connecting the dots between things, timeframes, situations, people, and everything in between. They’re analytical by nature, which can be a bit intimidating to others. They observe patterns of the past to better understand the future. They respect people who appreciate their “theories.” INTJs can come out a bit too strong for those who don’t get and don’t appreciate their hypotheses.

6. Listen to their contingency plans.

INTJs are the eternal optimist because they’re confident in their problem-solving skills and bodies of knowledge. In an INTJ’s eyes, a “problem” is merely a disruption that requires some tweaking. Their eyes remain fixated on the goal, because the vision of the future has been embedded in their mind. If you’ve partnered up with an INTJ, listen to their back-up plans, as they might have the most “outrageous ideas” that work. The goal has been achieved in their minds; they only need time to make it happen in the physical realm.

7. Be straightforward, never be passive-aggressive.

INTJs appreciate bluntness and refrain from emotional drama when discussing about things that matter to them. They’re known for their bluntness and honest feedback. Thus they expect others to do the same. Be clear about what you wish from the relationship and the things to be done. They may sound tactless, but it doesn’t mean they’re disrespectful, as they also expect you to do so.

8. Be prepared to earn their trust and loyalty.

In INTJs’ rational minds, it’s logical that trust and loyalty only come after they’ve been proven. During formative years, INTJs trusted people a lot and were disappointed, so they had to let them go. This explains the need to earn their trust and loyalty. Moreover, this is the only way to earn an INTJ’s trust and loyalty.

9. Be prepared to be encouraged to be your best.

This is one of the most satisfying things about being in a relationship with INTJs. They would literally push you to be a better person, if not the best version of yourself. It will occur after you’ve earned their lifelong trust and loyalty, of course. INTJs will do whatever it takes to make you a better person, since they believe that every person has an abundance of potential within. Consider yourself blessed for having them in your life.

10. Be prepared to discuss and argue about abstract ideas.

INTJs discuss and argue a lot, because they have so many contingencies to consider. And they can talk about deep and abstract ideas, like politics, philosophy, and spirituality. However, they aren’t good with personal quarrels and fights as they might not “get” that it was actually offensive. In INTJs’ minds, being in a constant state of thinking is expressed with discussing and arguing on various issues. So, if you’re an INTJ’s partner, don’t take their arguments seriously. They’re not upset or angry with you, they are just being an INTJ.

11. Be aware that sometimes INTJs can take deconstruction too far.

Due to INTJs’ deconstructing nature, they’re in the permathinking mode, thus they’d question, evaluate, investigate, and act one-sidedly, which can sometimes be interpreted as “insensitive.” As partners, understand that INTJs aren’t impulsive when they act swiftly and, often, alone. Again, it’s just an INTJ being an INTJ. However, as a partner, you can talk with them rationally, so they’d slow down a bit and be more accommodating to others’ ideas. INTJs would listen.

In conclusion, partnering up with an INTJ can be both a blessing and a curse. It depends on the dynamic within the relationship and how you, as the partner, understands how an INTJ’s mind works. Your INTJ partner will analyze your personality type as well, as it’s already built in their nature. Once both parties have understood each other well, respect would grow and lifetime loyalty follows.

INTJ Compatibility & Relationships

INTJ relationships

In relationships, INTJs are loyal and independent. They are measured, logical people who never fail to have a backup plan (or five!). Deep connections are essential for people of this type. They are steadfast and devoted in a relationship. You can count on an INTJ to stick by you through thick and thin.

They are one of the most strategic personality types and they have a clear idea of what they want in a partner. INTJs aren’t the type to play games and they place little importance on traditions such as Valentine’s Day or anniversaries.

INTJ compatibility

INTJs are most compatible with partners who are honest and intelligent. Being able to fully trust their partner is essential for people of this personality type. Looks aren’t enough for INTJs and they need a mental connection in order to feel attracted to someone.

INTJs work best with partners who are easy-going with a spontaneous, playful side that balances out their more serious nature.

INTJ dating

INTJs find casual dating exhausting and would much prefer a long-term partner with whom they share a meaningful connection.

People of this personality type always think ahead and if they don’t see the potential for a lasting relationship, they’ll view it as a waste of time. If an INTJ is spending time with you, you can be sure they like you. Attraction for INTJs goes far beyond the surface and they show love by helping their partner achieve their goals.

INTJ strengths in relationships

The following strengths are typical of INTJs:

1. Loyal. INTJs are one of the most loyal personality types. They have a knack for working things out and solving problems. They follow through on their plans because…why wouldn’t they? They’ll only say they’ll do something if they mean it because that’s what makes most logical sense to them. They see it as both practical and ethical.

2. Pragmatic. INTJs are pragmatic personality types. They take a logical approach to most things and are unlikely to overreact. INTJs are good at handling criticism and if you give them feedback, they’ll look at it objectively and work out whether they think it’s something worth changing or working on.

3. Quietly confident. INTJs have a quiet confidence. They carefully consider different options before deciding on a path, so when they do decide something, they are confident in their decision. INTJs are often highly accomplished due to their mixture of raw intelligence and strategic nature but they aren’t ones to go shouting about their successes.

4. Independent. INTJs are highly independent individuals. Of course, they do appreciate affection but they also enjoy having their own space and spending time alone to recharge. INTJs will offer the same in return and they aren’t going to be the type to completely smother their partners.

INTJ weaknesses in relationships

The following weaknesses can be typical of INTJs:

1. Closed-minded. INTJs can be closed-minded in certain situations. When they think they’re right, it can be hard to get them to see different perspectives. This is because INTJs will have carefully considered everything before coming to a conclusion, but this doesn’t mean that they can’t be wrong.

2. Insensitive. INTJs can be insensitive and find it difficult to offer emotional support. They are exceptionally logical and can find it hard to deal with partners who have emotional outbursts and if this happens frequently, they can lose respect for them. This can make their partners feel unloved.

3. Very private. INTJs are one of the most private personality types. They feel little need to share even small details of their lives, let alone big details. INTJs tend to avoid small talk. They can live without drawn-out conversations about your second cousin’s birthday party because…what’s the point? They do share aspects of their lives with their partners though, but it takes them a long time to fully open up.

4. Perfectionists. INTJs can be perfectionists when it comes to love. They have extremely high standards for everything they do in life and dating is no exception. They have a clear vision of what they want in a partner, which isn’t a bad thing in itself, but they sometimes don’t give people a chance because they don’t meet all of their criteria, or they foresee a problem that might arise years down the line.

INTJ love

INTJs fall in love slowly compared to most other personality types. They are cautious people in general and even more so when it comes to one of the greatest risks of all: love.

INTJs rarely meet people with who they see a future and when they do meet someone who ticks all their boxes, they’ll cherish them and be a devoted partner.

INTJ flirting

INTJs are not particularly flirty individuals. They tend to be direct and the nuances of flirting don’t come naturally to them. However, if an INTJ likes you, they’ll ask a lot of questions to try and determine if you’d be a good match long-term.

They like to plan far into the future and they won’t waste their time with someone they don’t think is right.

INTJ sexual energy

INTJs are intense and passionate lovers with the right person. They don’t tend to enjoy casual sex for a number of reasons, including the health risks, and they value having a meaningful connection with someone.

Sexual attraction is based on more than just looks for INTJs and they need an intellectual connection in order to feel deeply attracted to their partner.

INTJ communication

INTJs have a direct communication style and they certainly aren’t afraid to challenge people, especially if they think that they’re wrong.

INTJs are unlikely to share details of their life unless they’re directly asked, and even then, they’ll sometimes avoid the question. They are objective and are able to explain their reasoning in a measured and logical manner. INTJs like to get to the point right away and they can get frustrated by people who beat around the bush as they see it as inefficient.

INTJ compatibility with other personality types

INTJs are imaginative and determined individuals who are attracted to intelligence. INTJs are attracted to partners who help them relax and have fun

So who is an INTJ most compatible with? ENFPs and ENTPs are the best matches for an INTJ.

The Flirting Style of the INTJ Personality Type

Coy. Gregarious. Vulnerable.

Just kidding, that’s definitely not the INTJ’s flirting style.

If your idea of being swept off your feet involves intellectual discussion deep into the early morning hours, intense gazes, and raw honesty (even when it hurts) the INTJ is the man or woman of your dreams. These types forego sweet-talking and flirtation to get right to the meaningful matters of life.

Think Mr. Darcy in Pride & Prejudice. Brooding, serious, but ultimately heroically romantic. Or if you’re looking for the woman of your dreams, think of Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs. Now that’s a rom-com for the ages….

So without further ado, let’s take a look at how INTJs show affection.

Estimated reading time: 5 minutes

#1 – They Will See the Best You Could Be

INTJs have a gift for seeing the potential in people. Some of us find that annoying, and some of us find it inspiring. But for INTJs, self-improvement is an integral part of existence. These types can’t stand the idea of being stagnant. When they love someone, they want to inspire them to evolve WITH them. Not alone.

They’ll invite you to a class together.

They’ll buy you a book about personal growth.

They’ll ask you about your dreams and goals and come up with the perfect strategy for their achievement.

While some might respond with, “Hey! Can’t you just love me for who I am?” Others will see the INTJ’s true intentions. INTJs want the people they love to know they believe in them, hands down. They see a potential that they don’t want you to miss out on because they genuinely care about your happiness.

#2 – They’ll Give You Autonomy

INTJs believe that one of the best gifts anyone can receive is the gift of independence. If they’re into you, don’t expect them to overload your phone with text messages or show up at your door unexpectedly. They will respect your time above all.

In fact, for some people, the respect might be a little too excessive (we’re looking at you, ExFJs). It’s important for partners of INTJs to know that the space they give isn’t out of lack of interest, but merely out of courtesy. INTJs crave independence and they tend to figure most other people do as well. They don’t want to push themselves on other people or interrupt them, because that seems disrespectful and annoying to them.

But they will show up on time for your dates. They will text you before calling. If they care for you, they will be there for you. Point blank. They will show generosity with their time, which is really one of their most prized resources.

I mean, seriously. Most INTJ moms would rather have alone time for Valentine’s Day than diamonds or fancy massages.

#3 – They’ll Be Honest With You

INTJs are extremely private people in most situations. If someone asks them something too personal, they’re likely to respond with a steely gaze and a shrugged off, “Why is that any of your business?”

However, when they are invested in you, they know that their history and life is significant in establishing trust. They’ll be deeply honest with you and hope for the same in return. They hate the idea of wasting emotional energy and time on someone who isn’t what they promised to be. They’ll respect you enough to be real and authentic with you.

#4 – They’ll Ask You Meaningful Questions

Small talk and casual conversation is the bane of the INTJ’s existence. They want to know what gives your life a sense of meaning and purpose. Your goals, dreams, ambitions, and motives are what interest them. The state of the weather or the status of a celebrity couple will hold little to no interest for them, and they hate the idea of wasting their time on such matters.

Date: “Did you hear about Kim Kardashian and Kanye West?”

INTJ: “Did you hear those crickets chirping? Time for me to leave.”

#5 – They’ll Find Ways to (Respectfully) Touch You

If you’re looking for someone cuddly to lavish your affection on, don’t look for an INTJ.

Unless they like you romantically. Then, by all means, lavish away.

INTJs are very protective of their personal space, so if they’re casually touching you a lot then it’s a good sign that they’re interested in you. They might start small, like brushing your hand as they reach for something. Eventually, this could lead to lingering hugs or a hand on your shoulder as you navigate your way through a crowd.

At the end of the day, INTJs will probably just tell you if they’re interested in having a relationship with you. After all, they hate wasting time and being direct is more in their nature than sending mysterious signals. And if an INTJ likes you, enjoy the ride – you’ll be the recipient of deep loyalty, rare honesty, and intense, imaginative discussions about the future and your life together.
