How to Become a Male Stripper (with Pictures)

Headshots are as beneficial for strippers as they are for actors. Full-body shots are also necessary for this business. Agencies will use these to advertise you. They must not look cheap. Let a professional take them. Don’t use lots of makeup or gimmicks. Smile and focus on the camera so your eyes look lively.

A good agency is vital for getting your name out there. There are many reputable agencies, but also some bad ones. Search online for information before calling or emailing a company. Check to make sure they’re a registered Ltd or PLC company with liability insurance. Also ensure that they have good reviews from clients and performers.

Search out establishments that offer male stage performances. Tell the show organizer that you’re interested in joining them. They can guide you in the right direction. Many times they’ll let you into shows for free and let you watch. Sometimes they’ll give you an audition.

Go out to the shows to see how they work. Speak to other performers. They’ll be happy to guide you in the right direction and give you tips on how to improve. They might also be able to set up interviews with their organization or with venue owners.

5

Show up for bookings. In the beginning, work will be hard to find. You will have to perform as a topless waiter or pick up work on short notice. If you want to get in the business, you need to show up to these events. Don’t cancel at the last minute. A company that trusts you will give you more work. Losing that trust can be the difference between success or falling out of the industry.

11 Things I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Male Stripper

Magic Mike brought the world of male stripping to the big screen, but the job requires a lot more hard work than memorizing a few minutes of sexy choreo. For starters, you have to hustle to get hours—most male strippers freelance, hopping from club to club to make coin. Befriending clients is key for raking in tips, so flexing your personality can be just as important as flexing your biceps. And while having people fawn over you makes you feel pretty damn hot, sleeping with clients is completely off the table. Some nights you’ll be showered in cash, but don’t expect every customer to make it rain.

If you’re curious to know what it takes to become professional dancing hunk, look no further: Axl Reigns and Zackery Cross are here to give Cosmo the scoop. Hailing from Texas, Reigns worked as a dancer at LaBare Dallas, the first ladies-only male strip club and bachelorette party destination for celebs like Jessica Simpson and Anna Nicole Smith. From Las Vegas to New Orleans, Cross has performed at clubs across the U.S., including popular male revues like Kings of Hustler and Men of Vegas Live. Below, find their top tips for aspiring male strippers.

You’re probably not the whole package, but you’re going to have to become the whole package—fast.

Everyone deals with their own challenges and insecurities. “I didn’t have a background in dancing at all. So I struggled a little bit,” says Reigns. While some male strippers pump iron to attain the shape that they want, others might have to adjust their diets. According to Reigns, it also requires a certain disposition. “I didn’t really have the personality to be a [stripper] at the start,” explains Reigns. “I had to create a persona that was more of an entertainer.”

Your personality is (almost) as important as your body.

As a stripper, getting immediate feedback is pretty simple: Just look at how much money you make. If you’re doing something wrong, your income will suffer. “It’s a very powerful motivation,” says Reigns. “If you’re shy, you say, ‘Okay, what are the subjects that women would want to talk about and how can I learn about these subjects to carry on a conversation?'” A self-proclaimed introvert, Reigns admits he had to learn to be a little more social. “I had to loosen up a bit, and it was great. Working as a male dancer allowed me to flourish into somebody who I enjoyed being, versus someone who wasn’t as socially comfortable very easily.”

Most male strippers are independent contractors.

Unless you want to perform exclusively at private house parties, working independently for multiple clubs is the best way to maximize your income. Some independent contractors, like Cross, are even willing to travel for the right job. “We’ll fly places, driving, whatever it takes,” he explains. Cross and his colleagues pick locations based on seasonal demand. For example, Vegas is an ideal “summer city” for bachelorettes, while Florida is the place to be in the spring and fall. Working for a touring company is another deal entirely—strippers for popular troupes like Chippendales or Thunder from Down Under don’t make any tips at all. “You’re an employee, so you get a salary,” says Cross.

You have to audition to get work.

Strippers, regardless of their gender identity, have to audition for a club before taking the stage. Club managers assess dancers not only on their rhythm, but also on their physiques—some places even have height requirements (we’re talking 6 feet and up, only). Muscles also factor into the equation, so Cross and Reigns recommend bulking up where you can.

Stripping at certain clubs will cost you.

Depending on where you work, you may have to cough up a house fee in order to perform. Make sure you have some extra cash on you so you can spot the club $40 to $50, and heads-up: This fee can be larger if you show up late. Some house fees are percentages taken out of what you make each night, meaning you could have to hand over 30% of your earnings to the club in order to use their space. On the bright side though, selling VIP dances can be lucrative: Cross says he charges $400 or $500 per customer.

Stripping isn’t easy money.

“There’s less of a demand for [male strippers],” warns Cross. He estimates that women can earn up to $500 a night when they’re just starting out, whereas guys might make $300 to $400 a week for the first few months. It all depends on the market you’re in.

Building relationships with potential clients is vital for ensuring you never have a slow night, advises Reigns. “If there aren’t a lot of girls there and I’m not making a lot of money, I know I could be making more,” he says. “I could have called people and said, ‘Hey, why don’t you come in and see me?’ or I could have cultivated a relationship with different people who would continually come in and support me.”

You might have to work multiple jobs.

Which is honestly not that uncommon—according to the Census Bureau, about 13 million U.S. workers have more than one job. On top of being a dancer, Reigns is an author, model, and an actor. “We have a lot of guys who will personally train girls,” he says. “Guys will give them discounted time if they come see the shows. It’s another job, but it’s also good for getting clients.”

This content is imported from Instagram. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.

You can’t try to please every person in the club.

You’re not going to be everyone’s type, and that’s okay. Don’t get discouraged if you’re not getting attention from the client you want, and instead channel that energy into someone else. ” If a woman doesn’t like me best,” says Reigns, “then it’s not even worth wasting my time because no matter what I do, she will still like that other guy more than me.” That’s why Reigns recommends finding your niche, and sticking to it. “I usually cater to an older crowd,” he says. Adds Cross, “If you’re good to customers and you’re confident, things are gonna go well for you.”

You better make friends with the other guys—they’re not the competition.

It’s easy to feel like you’re competing for tips, but befriending your co-workers is key for attracting customers. Everyone has a different type, so if your buddy at work finds a client who’s into you, he’ll hook you up.

Of course, some will try to steal your clients.

Not every guy will try to step on your toes, but sometimes things can get cutthroat. “You’ll be texting a girl to come by, but then another guy will be like, ‘Let’s grab dinner before work,'” explains Reigns. “Then, she’s going to come in and get some dances from him, not you, and there goes your money.”

Don’t sleep with your clients.

While becoming a stripper might seem like a solid way to meet potential hookups, in reality, you’re there to do your job, not collect phone numbers. Some clients might mistake your attention for affection, so remaining professional at all times is a must. “I don’t want someone to believe there is a romantic relationship between us when there’s not,” Reigns cautions.

Male Stripper Fitness Tips

Ab-solutely blown away by Channing Tatum’s abs in the new Magic Mike XXL movie?

Strippers have to ensure their fitness is on point, to ensure they’re able to perform demanding choreographed routines night after night

Whether on film or IRL, male strippers have to ensure their fitness is on point, both to ensure they’re able to perform demanding choreographed routines night after night, and to guarantee they look hot enough to have the ladies drooling.

Marshall Arkley, 28, is an entertainer who gets butt naked every week as part of Adonis Cabaret, ‘the world’s leading male stripping troupe’. He also works as a muscle model and a personal trainer. Here are his fitness tips from a bloke who strips (and plays the piano with his penis) on stage – for real…

1. Use targeted training to create the illusion of a better body

Meet Marshall. No longer a chubby Geordie kid

“It’s entirely possible to adapt the shape you were born with – you don’t have to just sigh and settle for what you believe your chromosomes have dictated.

I weighed a ridiculous 12.5lbs at birth, so it’s no surprise I was a chubby blighter as a kid

“I’m part Geordie, part Bulgarian and weighed a ridiculous 12.5lbs at birth, so it’s no surprise I was a chubby blighter as a kid. But while I accept that genetics can have some effect upon your body shape, I’m living proof that having so-called ‘bad genes’ is no excuse for not making the best of yourself.

“Targeted training can help make a body that’s naturally ‘wonky’ look more in proportion. I’m predisposed to having an inordinately broad, thick back, which can make me look like a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle. I try to balance out my physique by developing my chest so my front matches my rear, size-wise.

I’m never going to be a Skinny Minnie, so I train my shoulders and legs to create the illusion of a tapered waist

“Likewise, my trunk has always been thick. I’m never going to be a Skinny Minnie, so I train my shoulders and legs to create the illusion of a tapered waist.”

2. Eat buffalo and, err, python

Mix up your lean proteins and try out buffalo steak

“It’s hard to stick to a high-protein diet [which body builders follow to build and repair muscle] if you’re bored out of your skull eating grilled chicken and tuna day in, day out. Varying your meals keeps things fresh.

“I work with a company called Wildefeast who sell a variety of healthy yet unusual meats, including bison, camel, llama, zebra and python. You can even buy a Widefeast selection box called ‘Marshall’s Well Hung Meat Package’. It contains horse.”

3. Don’t opt for the heaviest weights

“I see too many people at gyms doing bicep curls with enormous weights, but they swing the things like an old lady with her handbag. That might lift the weight into the air, but it won’t do much to pump your arms.

“When you’re doing any type of exercise, don’t be afraid to choose a smaller weight and try to connect your mind with your muscles. Focus on what’s moving inside you.”

4. Keep a food diary

Marshall, living for treat days

I couldn’t stick to any regime that didn’t allow me to have cheat days where I do obscene things with Nutella

“A lot of people think they’re eating more healthily than they are. Keeping a food diary is a great method of getting a clear, honest picture of your true habits. The free app MyFitnessPal helps you easily track your meals, snacks and workouts. You can use it to scan the barcode of products to get nutritional info on them when you’re out and about, too.

“Plus, if you’re trying out different diet or exercise plans, it’s a good way to monitor what’s working for you, because no one approach to fitness will suit everybody. Personally, I couldn’t stick to any regime that didn’t allow me to have cheat days where I do frankly obscene things with jars of Nutella.”

5. Make healthy choices on the go

Marshall is a fan of the, rather appropriately named, nakd bars

“We’re always travelling up and down the country for shows, fitness expos and photo shoots. Taking pre-prepared homemade foods in Tupperware is the best way to ensure you’re not consuming rubbish but it isn’t always practical, and can feel wang-witheringly dull.

Many cereal bars are cleverly marketed as being ‘all natural’ but they’re often glued together with liquid sugar

“If you end up having to buy food on the run, try to choose low glucose, minimally processed items. Fittingly, I rate Nakd bars as good on-the-move snacks, because they only contain raw fruit and nuts. So many cereal bars are cleverly marketed as being ‘all natural’ or ‘long-lasting energy sources’, but they’re often glued together with liquid sugar. They make your insulin levels spike, and can lead to you gaining weight.”

6. Join the resistance

A resistance band is an excellent bit of mobile workout kit to carry

“Exercising can be tough if you travel a lot. A resistance band is an excellent bit of mobile workout kit to carry. It takes up very little space and is hugely versatile. You can attach it to almost anything, and perform a wide variety of moves that work all sorts of muscle groups.”

7. Your own body is a free weight that you always carry with you

Press ups of peace ✌️ #gym #fitness #pressup #pressups #onehanded #plyometric #calisthenics A video posted by William Marshall Arkley (@marshallarkley) on May 5, 2015 at 9:54am PDT

“There’s a muscle model I know who’s an ex-marine with the most incredible body. His training pretty much consists of variations on pull-ups, altering his positions and handgrip to target different muscles, but just using his own body weight to create a challenge.

Your body is one piece of kit you take wherever you go

“Your body is one piece of kit you take wherever you go, so it’s worth learning exercises that rely upon you shifting your own weight rather than a dumbbell or bar.

“In addition, as you build muscle, you’ll become heavier, and thus bodyweight exercises will become tougher – they’re inherently progressive.

8. Develop your selfie-esteem

Unashamed selfie taking. Unashamed

“I publish selfies every day on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The outrageous outfits are the source of much affectionate mockery at my gym.

The selfies genuinely help my fitness in a number of ways

“I’m well aware that the number of selfies I post could be interpreted as egotistical, so I make sure I have a real hoot with them – because in truth, the selfies genuinely help my fitness in a number of ways…

“Fitness models are notorious for sending retouched, months-old images to agencies, then rocking up to shoots looking out of shape and podgy. I don’t use filters on my snaps, so clients can see what I really look like; followers can see what I really look like, so I’m not promoting unachievable body standards; and I can see what I really look like, so I can tweak the bits that are lacking.

Keep your sense of humour. After all, laughing is great for your abs

“My tip is to take a pic at the same time every day, in the same light, so you can track your progress. You don’t have to publish it, although many people feel they gain motivation and support by posting to social networks. If you were studying for a maths test, you’d have no shame in whipping out your textbook to study in public, so if you’re working hard on your body, don’t be ashamed to show it!

“Just don’t be a douchebag – respect those around you at the gym, and keep your sense of humour. After all, laughing is great for your abs!”
