How to Become a Shriner – The Ellsworth American
To become a Shriner, a man must first become a Master Mason in what is known as the Blue Lodge. The only way to become is a Freemason, which involves taking a series of three degrees, Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft and Master Mason, is to ask one. The Masons do not conduct membership drives or actively solicit members. The process is as old as the fraternity itself and ensures that the individual seeking the degrees is doing so of his desire and will. Although some continue to think of Masons as a “secret” society it prefers to be seen as a society with secrets. It is open, publishes the days and times of its meetings, and its members do not hide their participation. Most Masonic Halls occupy prominent places in the community and many of its meetings are public or semi-public events.
Qualifications
The mission of Freemasonry is to promote a way of life that binds like-minded men into a worldwide brotherhood that transcends all religious, ethnic, cultural, social and educational differences. The craft teaches the great principles of Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth. It demonstrates the outward expression of these, through its fellowship, its compassion and its concern, to find ways in which each may serve his God, his family, his country, his neighbors and himself.
Keep in mind, Masons do not solicit for members, the decision to become a Mason is your own.
If you are seeking membership you must ask a Mason or a Masonic Lodge for an application.
You must be a man at least 21 (18 in some jurisdictions) years of age.
You must be of good moral character.
You must have a personal belief in a Supreme Being (the definition of a Supreme Being is up to you).
You must be a resident of your state for 12 months (in most cases).
You must decide to become a Mason of “your own free will and accord.”
You will need to express your personal interest in joining the Fraternity.
You must be loyal to your country.
You must be dedicated to providing for your family.
You must have a sincere determination to conduct yourself in a manner that will earn the respect and trust of others and possess a desire to help others through community service and universal benevolence.
You must be willing to sign a petition, stating your age, occupation and place of residence.
There are no religious, political or racial restrictions for membership other than the aforementioned belief in a Supreme Being, as any discussion of religion or politics is strictly forbidden in an open Masonic Lodge.
Admission is decided by ballot. To be accepted, the ballot must be unanimous.
To petition a lodge, the first step is to find one close to you, which you can do by visiting the website for the Grand Lodge of Maine (http://www.mainemason.org/) and follow the contact information. Once you have selected a lodge (or several) reach out and make contact. This is particularly important if you do not know a member of that lodge. Reach out and contact the lodge secretary, who would be happy to speak to you about upcoming activities and/or open houses.
Once you become a Master Mason you are eligible to apply to take another series of degrees and become a Shriner.

In many parts of North America, Masonry does not solicit members. In these areas, no one is asked to join, and a man must seek admission of his own free will — he must ask. In some areas, Masons are permitted to solicit new members. In all cases, a man interested in becoming a Mason, if he has not been asked, should consult a friend whom he believes to be a Freemason to secure his good counsel and recommendation concerning this important undertaking.
For men who would like to receive additional instruction and explanation regarding the allegory and symbolism learned in the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite or the York Rite bodies elaborate on the basic tenets of Freemasonry.
The Shrine of North America is a fraternity that grew out of Freemasonry over a century ago. Because of this, the Shrine is dedicated to Masonic principles. The Shrine Fraternity provides Masonic brothers a means to widen the fellowship first enjoyed in the Blue Lodge. It also offers men, their wives and their families an opportunity to meet new friends who have similar interests, tastes and feelings.
