Seek wisdom from God
Wisdom is immensely valuable ‘My benefits are worth more than a big salary even a very big salary; the returns on me exceed any imaginable bonus’ (vv18–19 MSG) This wisdom is worth more than all the material wealth in the world Apart from anything else unlike material wealth it lasts for ever (v18)

1 Wisdom comes from God
Wisdom begins with a relationship with God It starts with the ‘fear of the Lord’ (v13) ‘Fear’ means ‘respect’ and a deep awareness of God that is the foundation of all wisdom
2 Wisdom is pure and beautiful
The writer of Proverbs says ‘To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance evil behaviour and perverse speech I walk in the way of righteousness along the paths of justice’ (vv1320) This is the test of true wisdom that comes from God As the apostle James writes ‘Wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving considerate submissive full of mercy and good fruit impartial and sincere’ (James 317)

36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping she began to wet his feet with her tears Then she wiped them with her hair kissed them and poured perfume on them
39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this he said to himself “If this man were a prophet he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner”
40 Jesus answered him “Simon I have something to tell you”
“Tell me teacher” he said
41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender One owed him five hundred denarii and the other fifty 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back so he forgave the debts of both Now which of them will love him more”
43 Simon replied “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven”
“You have judged correctly” Jesus said
44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon “Do you see this woman I came into your house You did not give me any water for my feet but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair 45 You did not give me a kiss but this woman from the time I entered has not stopped kissing my feet 46 You did not put oil on my head but she has poured perfume on my feet 47 Therefore I tell you her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown But whoever has been forgiven little loves little”

Have you ever made a misjudgement about somebody based only on outward appearances
In today’s passage we see a woman with a past who sold her love by the hour as the town sex worker washing Jesus’ feet with her hair kissing them and pouring perfume on them The Pharisee’s reaction was the natural one ‘If this man were a prophet he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is – that she is a sinner’ (739)
But Jesus ‘filled with wisdom’ (240) right from his earliest days could see beneath the surface He saw the fact that the woman was expressing her immense love for him because she knew how much she had been forgiven You may have had a negative past but you can have a positive and blessed future
We see the wisdom of Jesus both in his insight into people and in the way he chose to teach He tells a parable about an eccentric bank manager He has two customers One owes £5000 another £50000 He lets both of them off completely No human bank manager is likely to act like that But that is exactly what Jesus’ love is like All your sins are wiped out You receive total forgiveness The greater the debt the more grateful you will be and the greater your love for Jesus
This parable enabled Simon the Pharisee unwittingly to answer his own concern (743) Jesus wisely and gently points out that Simon had not given him a very warm welcome nor shown a great deal of love Simon’s problem was that he didn’t realise how much he needed forgiveness
On the other hand the woman loved Jesus much because she knew she had been forgiven much (v47) She was willing to risk rejection and give of herself practically emotionally and financially
She wept so much that she ‘wet his feet with her tears’ (v38) In order to wipe his feet she let her hair down in public (something regarded as shameful) She was in the grip of her emotions and oblivious to what others thought She did not stop kissing his feet out of deep reverence
Then she poured rare and expensive perfume (normally reserved for the head) on his feet She loved Jesus with all of her heart Jesus sees your heart rather than your past He said to her ‘Your faith has saved you; go in peace’ (v50) Your love is a result of your faith As the apostle Paul wrote ‘The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love’ (Galatians 56)
You may not have had a good beginning in life but this does not mean you cannot have a great finish Whatever your past life was like with Jesus you can make a completely new start and have a great future You do not need to go around burdened by guilt – from previous relationships or from incidents in your past The moment you repent and put your faith in Jesus all your sins are wiped out It is important that what you know in your head drops to your heart
Jesus wants you to acknowledge that you are a sinner You can’t pay off your debts But Jesus forgives you Ask the Holy Spirit to fill you today with an overflowing love for God and love for others

How to Have Wisdom from God According to the Bible

Wisdom is the ability to discern what’s right from what’s wrong. It is a gift that gives us the capability to make the right choice or decision. If knowledge is power, then wisdom is using that power the right way.

We can be educated or intelligent, but without wisdom, our education or intelligence may only be in vain. An intelligent person could earn more fame, money, and fortune, but a wise one could earn more friends, honor and God’s favor.

There is wisdom from people and there is also wisdom from God. The first may be packed with eloquence but less in substance, while the latter may not sound beautiful but full of power.

God’s wisdom can make one wise man more powerful than ten rulers in a city (see Ecclesiastes 7:19). It also preserves the life of its possessor (see Ecclesiastes 7:12).

What is the Difference Between Wisdom and Knowledge?

The difference between wisdom and knowledge is:

Wisdom is the ability to apply knowledge.

Knowledge is the awareness of information gained through observation, experience, or study.

Through learning and experience, we gain knowledge about our surroundings and how to handle various situations during life.

But without wisdom to apply that knowledge, it isn’t very valuable to us or others.

Someone may know a lot about something, have all kinds of information in their mind, but if they do not have the wisdom to apply it, then they really don’t have much value in their mind or from others.

God’s knowledge guides us towards peace, not hostility, gentleness instead of an argumentative spirit.

3. Godly wisdom is considerate.

God’s wisdom is giving and full of compassion.

It helps us to see things from another person’s perspective without judging them.

False wisdom causes us to be inconsiderate of others, which leads to stress, bitterness, and a closed heart.

4. Godly wisdom is submissive.

God’s wisdom submits to His will and does what He wants. It allows God to change us for the better.

5. Godly wisdom is full of mercy and good fruit.

6. Godly wisdom is impartial.

God loves everyone the same. He doesn’t want us to be prejudiced towards anyone, which is shown in His impartial wisdom.

7. Godly wisdom is sincere.

It comes from a pure, genuine source that wants nothing but good things for us and those around us. Therefore, to have God’s wisdom within ourselves, we must live honestly and sincerely, just as God does toward us.

10 Ways to Have Wisdom from God

So how can we have wisdom from God according to the Bible? Here are 10 biblical ways to be wise:

1. Ask for wisdom from God.

“If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.” – James 1:5 (KJV)

The first thing you can do to gain wisdom from God is to ask it from Him. Admit that you lack wisdom. Overcome your arrogance and admit that you have also been a folly.

2. Ask faithfully.

“But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.” – James 1:6-7 (KJV)

Be faithful when asking and praying for wisdom from God. Cast all your doubts away and believe in Him. In other words, don’t ask wisdom while you disobey His commands – that is an act of hypocrisy and unfaithfulness. Believing in God and being faithful to Him means you also keep and obey His commandments.

3. Be a God-fearing person.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.” – Psalm 111:10 (KJV)

When you have fear in God, you follow His teachings and obey His commands. You avoid committing sins that will displease Him. You stay away from acts that will inflict harm upon yourself and other people. And then you will realize that these are good – these are right – and that is wisdom.

4. Be humble.

“Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. If you want to have wisdom from God, live a humble life. Humility will help you overcome envy and selfish ambition that lead to wicked practices. So choose humility and wisdom, not foolishness and wickedness.

5. Be prudent.

“I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion.” – Proverbs 8:12 (ESV)

Wisdom is the ability to make good judgments. Hence, always practice prudence. Don’t be hasty in making decisions. Always expand your knowledge. The more you know, the better your judgment will be.

6. Be peaceful and considerate.

“But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.” – James 3:17 (KJV)

Always observe awareness and practice peacefulness. Be gentle and slow to anger. Learn how to forgive and show mercy. Be considerate of the feelings of the people around you. How to Be Wise

What does it mean to be wise? To me, it has nothing to do with a person’s IQ or degree. A wise person is someone who applies common sense.

That sounds paradoxical, right? Common sense is common after all. It’s about the insights, lessons, and wisdom everyone knows. But the problem is that not everyone applies what they know.

In fact, it’s very uncommon to see people applying common sense. I know a few people who I consider as wise, and none of them are considered geniuses. They’re just reliable, experienced, calm, and good people who live normal lives.

In this article, I share six habits/behaviors I’ve observed from watching them.

1. Rely on facts, not assumptions

Most people make assumptions without realizing it. Every time we’re not sure about something, we’re making assumptions.

If I send someone an email about a business proposal, and they don’t get back to me in two days, and I think they’re not interested, I’m making an assumption. The belief that someone is not interested because they don’t instantly respond is just an idea that’s not based on facts.

As long as I don’t get a response in that scenario, I can’t say whether we have a deal or not. In our daily lives, we make countless of these assumptions. And most of our judgments are based on our personal beliefs. The problem is we can’t trust our beliefs simply because they are so subjective.

Instead, rely on facts and avoid interpreting everything based on your ideas, beliefs, and feelings. A quick shortcut you can apply is this: Observe your thoughts and ask yourself, “How do I know what I’m thinking is true?” You often find that you either need to ask more questions, do research, or simply wait until you receive feedback.

2. Think from first principles

Thinking from first principles was coined by the Ancient Greek philosopher, Aristotle. Elon Musk explained this idea really succinctly in an interview with Kevin Rose.

Some people assume that thinking from first principles means you don’t make assumptions. But for Musk, it means you go even beyond looking at facts.

In the interview he gave an example of how people looked at the cost of batteries: “People would say, ‘Historically it cost $600 per kilowatt-hour, and so it’s not going to be much better than that in the future.’ And you say, No, what are the batteries made of? First-principles means you say: Okay, what are the material constituents of the batteries?”

Sometimes the facts of today will limit you. At some point, the cost of batteries was at a certain level, but that doesn’t mean the cost cannot decrease. Thinking from first principles is a way to challenge the status quo. It’s looking at what is, and thinking what could be, keeping the laws of human nature and physics in mind.

Wise people constantly ask, “Is there a better way we can do this?”

3. Read a lot and read widely

Every wise person I know has a very broad set of knowledge, ranging from history to economics to psychology. We’re all equipped with this fascinating brain that’s the perfect instrument for solving problems.

But that instrument needs energy and food to properly function. Feeding your body is easy: You eat.

But what about feeding your mind? This is something not a lot of people take seriously. Most people’s days consist of work and leisure. At what moment do you nurture your mind?

It’s when you’re intellectually challenged. That doesn’t happen a lot at our work or social interactions. And it sure as hell doesn’t happen when we’re consuming entertaining content.

The best way to challenge yourself on an intellectual level is to acquire knowledge. The easiest way to do that is to read a book. You can also listen to a book or take a course.

Wise people do something that challenges their minds every day. They read a lot. And they read widely because most mental stimuli comes from learning about new things.

4. Take enough time to make decisions

In our fast-paced world, many people think that smart people are “quick on their feet.” But making good decisions is not always a product of quickness. In some situations, it pays off to be a quick decision-maker.

You might have heard about this investment fund called Archegos. The fund got a lot of press in April 2021 when they borrowed billions of dollars to make several risky bets on stocks.

Archegos borrowed the money from a bunch of different investment banks like Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Credit Suisse, and Nomura. The American investment banks acted quickly when they learned that Archegos’ bets didn’t pay off.

They dumped all of their stocks before the market opened and before the other banks acted. As a result, Credit Suisse and Nomura took major financial damage in the excess of billions of dollars. That’s an example where quickness paid off.

But we often become quick decision-makers by first becoming slow decision-makers. This sounds counterintuitive, but it’s the same process as running a marathon. No one runs a marathon on their first run. Similarly, no good decision-maker can be quick at the beginning of their career.

It’s important to take as much time as you can to decide. But no more. Otherwise we risk procrastinating for no good reason.

5. Listen to other people

I find it funny that the most ignorant people have difficulty listening to advice while the smartest people are usually the first to listen to everyone. I remember when one of my mentors asked me about my opinion about the 2008 financial crisis when I was in college.

“Where do we go from here?” He asked me. What did I know as a college student back then? And yet, my mentor took the time to listen to what I had to say. And he was really curious as well.

Ever since that moment, I’ve been extremely aware of how often I’m curious about other people’s opinions and insight. My experience is that almost no one cares. Most people just love to listen to their own voice and don’t care about what others have to say.

The wise people I know are the opposite. They love to learn from others and are always open to different ideas.

6. Learn from your mistakes

Wise people see mistakes as lessons. Ralph Waldo Emerson said it best: “Good judgment comes from experience, and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.”

We all make bad judgments and mistakes. That’s not what matters. How do you respond after you make a mistake? That’s the key.

Do you use it to learn? Or do you become more risk-averse after every mistake you make? The former will help you grow, the latter will advance your decay.

As you go through life, it’s important to realize it’s okay to make mistakes. The smartest people in the world don’t necessarily make fewer mistakes. They just don’t let their mistakes go to waste.
