How to perform a Chrome virus scan

Google Chrome virus scan usually runs automatically if you download a file or if it suspects some malicious activity. However, it does not perform real-time background checks like more advanced anti-malware software – it just scans your system when asked.

Using this tool is easy, but are there any risks involved? Find out below.

How to run a virus scan on Google chrome

1. Open Google Chrome;

2. Click the three dots in the top-right corner and choose Settings;

3. Scroll to the bottom and click Advanced;

4. Scroll further down and pick Clean up computer;

5. Click Find. We recommend that you untick the Report details field below to avoid giving additional info to Google;

6. Wait for Google to report whether any threats were found. If Chrome finds any malicious software, it will prompt you to remove it;

7. Just click Remove to get rid of malicious items. You might need to restart your computer afterwards.

This tool looks for threats that do not comply with Google’s unwanted software policy. It’s Windows-only, too, so if you have MacOS, be sure to check our articles on how to deal with bloatware on Mac.

Privacy issues

While it might seem like a convenient tool, we know that Google is always hungry for any data they can get. In this case, they can obtain an unprecedented access to the depths of your system and see its vulnerable areas. There is also a high chance that this info might be used to bombard you with ads or passed to third-parties.

We recommend using an antivirus scanner, and any other software that improves your protection. For example, NordVPN comes with a built-in Threat Protection feature, which helps to prevent malicious file downloads, limit invasive tracking, and boost overall privacy. Instead of having to remove malware after it’s been installed, services like this can prevent your device from being infected in the first place.

How to clean your Chrome browser

Maintaining your browser’s hygiene is essential for its proper performance, so running a full Chrome cleanup is always a good idea. If it is acting slow, try clearing the cookies or cached info. Just do the following:

1. Open Google Chrome;

2. Click the three dots in the top-right corner and choose Settings;

3. Scroll to the bottom and click Advanced;

4. Click on Clear browsing data in the Privacy and security section;

5. Tick everything you want to clean under the Basic or Advanced sections, choose the Time range for the data wipe, and click Clear data.

For a safe browsing experience, it’s important to take advantage of all the cybersecurity tools and systems available to you. Data breaches and malware are continually effecting unsuspecting internet users, so scan for viruses regularly and be proactive about online safety.

Ads by BBQLeads

What is BBQLeads?

The BBQLeads app claims to make Internet browsing more productive by helping users to find the best service professionals in their area and compare offers. While this added functionality may seem legitimate, BBQLeads is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted application.

Developers of this add-on employ a deceptive software marketing method called ‘bundling’, and therefore, computer users often install this plug-in inadvertently without their consent when downloading free software.

Following installation, BBQLeads tracks users’ Internet browsing activity by recording demographic information, browser types, operating system types, and IP addresses.

Furthermore, this potentially unwanted application generates intrusive ads (marked as “Ads by BBQLeads” and “Brought to you by BBQLeads”) including, for example, banners, pop–ups, pop-unders, coupons, price comparison, in-line text, and display advertisements.

At time of research, this browser extension performed no malicious tasks, however, be aware that its presence on your system may lead to privacy issues. Furthermore, clicking third party ads generated by this software can lead to malware and virus infections. For these reasons, you are advised to remove BBQLeads from your Internet browsers.

BBQLeads is similar to other adware that infiltrates Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) via free software downloads and causes intrusive ads. Examples include Surfing Safeguard, BatterMarkit, Crime Watch, and RapidyWeb.

To avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications, express caution when downloading free software since, today, most free software download websites employ ‘download clients’ – programs offering installation of advertised browser extensions together with the chosen free software.

When downloading free programs, inspect each download step and opt-out of installation of any advertised browser plug-ins by clicking the ‘decline’ button. Computer users who observe ads generated by BBQLeads should use this removal guide to eliminate adware from their Internet browsers.

Previously discovered adware, which was identical to BBQLeads, was named DonutQuotes.

Deceptive free software installers used in BBQLeads adware distribution:

In this paper we present BBQ (Blended Browsing and Querying), a graphic user interface for seamlessly browsing and querying XML data sources. BBQ displays the structure of multiple data sources using a paradigm that resembles drilling-down in Windows’ directory structures. BBQ allows queries incorporating one or more of the sources. Queries are constructed in a query-by-example (QBE) manner, where DTDs play the role of schema. The queries are arbitrary conjunctive queries with GROUPBY, and their results can be subsequently used and refined. To support query refinement, BBQ introduces virtual result views: standalone virtual data sources that (i) are constructed by user queries, from elements in other data sources, and (ii) can be used in subsequent queries as first-class data sources themselves. Furthermore, BBQ allows users to query data sources with loose or incomplete schema, and can augment such schema with a DTD inference mechanism.
