How to Make THC Milk and Clean Your Grinder Simultaneously!
Are you one of those stoners that gets violently ill every time you look inside your grinder and think about all those little marijuana nugget particles (MNP) that go to waste and get lost for all eternity in the Black Hole of Vanished Pot?
I mean, hopefully you’re already collecting the kief in the bottom chamber of your grinder and saving that up for future use, but we’re talking about those stubborn, microscopic little MNP’s that won’t fall out of the grinder – no matter how hard you try. You can of course clean your grinder with some alcohol and cotton swabs, but you’ll probably just be throwing the swabs in the trash anyway, so that kind of defeats the purpose of cleaning the little micro nugs out.
In this short article, we explain how to not only clean the piss out of your grinder, but how to maximize every last MNP in there for potent, THC-infused consumption.
Enjoy.
[Credit to our German pals over at the Weedness YouTube channel for the following idea].How to clean your grinder… And make THC-infused milk at the same time
The good news here is that you only need three simple “materials” to carry out this brilliant little DIY weed hack:
A dirty weed grinder
A pot (for cooking)
Milk
If you’re clever, you’ve probably already figured out the process here: what you’re going to be doing is pouring a little milk in the pot, bringing it to a light boil, tossing the grinder inside, and letting it boil.
You don’t want to bring the milk to too gnarly of a boil because this will cause the water inside to evaporate too quickly, and you could end up with a gooey, sticky, unusable grinder. Just bring it to a very mild boil, and keep a watchful eye on it so that it doesn’t get out of control.
For optimal results, you’ll want to let your grinder bubble in the milk bath for about 20 minutes. This will not only help clean the piece to a pristine shine, but will also help decarboxylate and dissolve the THC into the milk for an optimized yield.
Here’s a video of the great folks at Weedness YouTube for putting the process into action:
Final Thoughts: Cleaning your grinder and making THC milk at the same time
To be clear, you’re (probably) not going to get super duper stoned by drinking your kief-infused milk from the grinder boiling process. In fact, you may not get high at all (after all, we’re not talking about a great deal of THC here).
Simply put, the main reason we like this weed hack is because we hate seeing weed go to waste. Grinders do a great job of collecting kief (and we’ve seen people collect A LOT of kief), but like we said, there’s always that little amount that you just can’t seem to get out of there without mopping it up and throwing it away on a cotton swab.
What you choose to do with this weed hack is up to you; clean your grinder and drink THC-infused milk, or don’t. Just don’t forget to rinse the grinder off in warm water after it takes its little bubbling milk bath.
How to Clean a Grinder
Most people who smoke weed have a single weed grinder they cherish and use constantly. Like many weed accessories, a good grinder can be an investment and improve the quality of your smoke session.
Over time your grinder can become less effective and may even be detracting from your smoking experience.
When your grinder becomes difficult to turn, has noticeable build-up in the interior, and there is less kief collected in the bottom of the grinder, you know it’s time for a grinder deep clean. Here is our tried and true method for cleaning a grinder.
How Often Should You Clean Your Grinder?
Grinders can get build-up from grinding up sticky nugs over and over until they don’t work as well anymore. A grinder’s primary purpose is to break up weed into small pieces so you can smoke it.
The teeth on the grinder cut and break up the weed as you turn the grinder. The weed particles fall through the holes in the grinder and are collected in the second chamber.
Depending on how often you use your grinder and how good your weed is, sticky deposits of kief and bits of weed will get stuck in the holes, pressed up against the walls, and condensed in the grooves of the teeth. This dense build-up of weed particles is both bad for your grinder and your weed.
As more sticky particles attach to your weed grinder, they cause additional build-up to occur even more quickly by covering the surface of your grinder. The worse the build-up, the more THC you are losing from your weed.
To prevent THC loss and get the best out of your weed, you should probably clean your grinder at least once every six months. Also, all that weed trapped in your grinder is hash, so there are ways to make use of that valuable THC and try and preserve it for future use.
How to Clean Your Grinder
A few methods can be used to get your grinder clean and to work like new. If you want to save and use the THC from the weed stuck to the walls and teeth, it will take a bit longer to clean, but you can then use the particles you yield.
For a fast clean that strips the grinder of any stuck-on bits, isopropyl alcohol is king but will ruin all the kief. For those truly adventurous, there is the milk method akin to making a light version of bhang.
Freeze Your Grinder to Help Clean
Freezing items that have stuff stuck to them is not anything new. When objects have frozen, the bonds that hold them together weaken, and so long as there is no moisture on the things, they can be separated easily.
If you make sure that your grinder is dry, you can pop it in the freezer for about an hour. When you pull it out, you will have a nice window of time where the weed and kief stuck to the grinder is brittle and will break off easier.
The key to making this helpful process is keeping your grinder free from moisture during the freezing process. Water will have an adverse effect and make it harder to clean.
How to Clean a Grinder and Save Kief
The basic strategy for cleaning your grinder and saving the built-up kief is choosing the right tool and being diligent about getting into every area of the grinder. Regardless of what method you choose, it will always be helpful to have a scrapping tool of some kind to help dislodge the stuck-on particles of weed.
A scraper tool can be something like a small screwdriver, a craft knife, or what works best is a basic dental scraping tool. If all else fails, you may be able to go through a few toothpicks to get the job done, but a metal tool is best.
You should also have a stiff paintbrush or old toothbrush handy to clean out the hardest-to-reach areas. Also, have your rolling tray ready to catch all the particles that you loosen.
How to Collect the Stuck-on Kief From a Grinder
Disassemble the grinder into its parts. If the screen is easily removable or replaceable, then remove it as well. Starting with the kief chamber, tap out each part of the grinder over your rolling tray to free any easily loosened particles. You can do this by hitting the pieces together or tapping them with a butter knife or similar tool. Once all the loose particles have been knocked off, take your cleaning brush and scour each part of the grinder. This will knock off additional kief build-up. Make sure to get into the holes and threading of the grinder. What’s left is the compacted and stuck-on pieces of weed, and they need to be scraped off with your tool. This may take some time and the THC you collect will look dark and dense but be aware that this is the stuff that’s been compounded and made stronger over time. After scraping the concentrated kief from your grinder collect all the material that fell to your rolling tray. You can place it in a small jar for saving or immediately sprinkle it on a bowl of ground weed for an enhanced experience. If you have a good amount, here are some other ideas in our What is Kief article.
How to Clean a Metal Grinder With Isopropyl Alcohol
If you are not concerned about making use of the weed stuck to the walls of your grinder, then you can focus on stripping everything from the grinder in one process by using alcohol to clean it.
Alcohol is a solvent and helps dissolve the bonds that hold sticky THC particles to the grinder. Here are the steps to cleaning your grinder with Iso.
Disassemble the grinder into its relative parts and give it a quick tap and brush off to free up any easily removable build-up. Use a microwave-safe container and fill it halfway with alcohol. Then heat the container with the alcohol in a microwave for about 20-30 seconds. Do not overheat the alcohol. Be careful. The alcohol’s temperature will be hot to hot. Gently place each piece of the grinder into the alcohol and let it soak for 30 min. Carefully pull out each part of the grinder and scrub it with a heavy brush under warm water. You’ll notice that the stuck-on material has become loosened and washes away easily. Repeat this process as needed, then let your grinder thoroughly dry out before use.
How to Clean a Plastic or Acrylic Grinder with Soap
If you have a plastic or acrylic grinder, solvents can weaken the durability, so you’ll just want to focus on scraping and brushing your grinder clean with soap and water. This is pretty much like hand washing a nice piece of dishware. Here is what to do.
Disassemble the grinder into its relative parts and give it a quick tap and brush off to free up any easily removable build-up. Place the pieces in a bowl or container that can handle the heat. Run the water from your kitchen faucet on hot, fill the container until the pieces are submerged, and let them soak for 15min. Add some dish soap to the water and use a cleaning brush and other cleaning tools that won’t damage the plastic or acrylic. Clean off the grinder making sure to keep the parts submerged while you scrub. Wash off the parts with warm water and let them dry out thoroughly before use.
Boil a Weed Grinder in Milk (Yes, Really!)
One of the most curious ways of cleaning your grinder, preserving the kief, and making it into an ingestible all at once is by boiling the grinder in milk. Milk contains fat that helps break down and absorb the THC that is on the grinder’s surface.
The THC from the kief will be infused into the milk leaving any plant material stuck to the grinder free to be cleaned away. Metal grinders are the only suitable types for this method. Here are the steps.
Disassemble the grinder. Create a double boiler using a pot with a small amount of water and another pot that sits inside of that pot. Fill the interior pot halfway with milk. Whole milk works best. Place the grinder parts in the milk and turn the stovetop to medium-high heat, ensuring it never reaches above 150-degrees. Let it simmer between 1-2 hours, then cut the heat off and let it cool. Remove the grinder parts and clean any remaining material off with soap and warm water. Strain the now THC-infused milk to remove any particulate matter. You can drink this now if you dare.
Wrapping Up
A clean grinder makes your smoke sessions better because you get to enjoy the full flavor and potency of your weed. Removing the build-up from your grinder will make it rotate better, keep the teeth sharp, and just make it look better in general.

How To Clean Your Grinder
How to Clean a Grinder
Your trusty grinder is a handy tool for helping you to have a better session with your favorite herb. But even your grinder needs a little love and care every now and then.
Every once in a while, it is a good idea to clean all the grit and gunk out of your grinder. It will help keep your device sharp and functioning at peak performance, as well as lessen the resistance you encounter when trying to use it.
There are also health risks associated with dirty grinders, with old debris providing a potential breeding ground for bacteria, mold spores and other allergens.
Cleaning a grinder doesn’t take much time, yet is well worth the couple minutes it takes to get the job done right.
Here are the basic steps to cleaning a grinder….
What you Need to Clean a Grinder
At the first sign of your grinder working less efficiently or when the screen is visibly clogged, that is a good sign that it is time to clean your grinder.
But before we get started, there are a few items you should gather to help with the cleaning process:
A paper plate – This will be used to catch loose debris and keep the mess contained.
Toothpicks and Q-tips – These can help get into hard-to-reach areas.
Toothbrush or paintbrush – This will be your cleaning tool.
Paper towels – You can set your grinder on this to try or poke it into the grinder.
Isopropyl alcohol – For metal grinders only!
Rubbing alcohol – For deep cleans
Hair dryer – Impatient for a dry grinder? Put your styling tool to use!
Now that you have all your tools gathered, we can go through the basic cleaning steps for your grinder.
The Steps to Clean a Grinder
Whether your grinder is metal, plastic, or acrylic, there are a few simple steps you can take to give it a decent cleaning.
Beyond these basic steps, however, each type of grinder has its own step that needs to be applied. We’ll cover both the basics and specifics below. Feel free to skip ahead if necessary.
1. Disassemble Your Grinder
After you completely pull your grinder apart, stick the pieces in the freezer for about thirty minutes. You may need to wait up to an hour. This will allow any dirt that may be sticking to the screen or to the sides to harden. Now take these pieces and tap them vigorously over a paper towel to remove all the debris.
2. Sweep Your Grinder Out
Using a toothbrush, or a soft paintbrush, brush out any remaining particles. Make sure to get in between the nooks and the threads, getting into every individual groove.
TIP: If the grinder is in need of a deep clean, apply a little rubbing alcohol to the brush while you sweep.
3. Special Step for Metal Grinders
If you are using a metal grinder, you will also want to clean it with isopropyl alcohol. Place the pieces of your metal grinder into a Ziploc bag, and use just enough isopropyl alcohol to cover the grinder.
Let the grinder soak in the alcohol until the liquid turns a muddy color, and you can see particles floating in the liquid. A higher concentration of isopropyl alcohol will work faster.
After the grinder is clean, rinse it out and let it dry. Then you can re-assemble your metal grinder.
WARNING: Do not use isopropyl alcohol with plastic or acrylic grinders, or even metal grinders that have an acrylic window at the top. For these, use the next method.
4. Special Steps for Acrylic or Plastic Grinders
Isopropyl alcohol can dissolve these grinders, so boiling water is the way to go. You can also choose to use soap and warm water.
Boiling Water Method – Place all the pieces in a large pot of water and bring it to a boil. After this, remove the pot from the heat, and let it cool for 10 minutes. Remove the grinder pieces from the pot and run a toothbrush through each one to remove any particles. Then, set them out to dry.
WARNING: Do not use this method with a metal grinder, or the grinder may rust.
Soap and Water Method – It’s as easy as it sounds! You can use your toothbrush or a Q-tip to scrub soap into every nook and cranny. After this, rinse your grinder pieces with warm water and let them dry.
The Importance of Keeping Your Grinder Clean
Look, we get it…cleaning your grinder is probably the last thing on your never-ending to-do list. And it probably doesn’t seem all that important in the grand scheme of things.
Why bother when it works, am I right?
But there are actually a number of good reasons for cleaning your grinder on a regular basis. Ones that can affect everything from your health to the flavor of your herb.
Why you Should Clean your Grinder Regularly:
You extend the life of your grinder. Allowing your grinder to stay full of gunk increases the risk of parts breaking. By cleaning your grinder, you save money that would be spent on a new one.
You increase the efficiency of your grinder. A dirty grinder becomes hard to work with, and more of your herbs may become stuck within the grinder, meaning that you may lose some in the process.
The grinder will not be able to achieve a fine grind. When the nooks and threads get dirty, it will be more difficult to turn large pieces of herb into a small, fine grind. By cleaning your grinder, you ensure that you will continue to get a fine grind to work with.
Metal grinders can begin to lose metal shavings into your materials if not kept clean. This poses a variety of health risks.
Bacteria can also accumulate in a dirty grinder. These bacteria may end up in your lungs. Keep those grinders clean!
Closing Thoughts
Cleaning your grinder doesn’t take a lot of effort, yet doing so can have a big impact on your next smoking session and frankly is well worth the little time it takes.
If you haven’t done so recently, take a few minutes today to perform this important task. Extend the life of your grinder by taking the time to care for it, and it will reward you with the perfect grind for years to come.
Not to mention you might just notice your next session is a little bit fresher and more flavorful than before.
