How to breathe, and not breathe, while skydiving
Is it possible to breathe while skydiving? Absolutely!
In your quest for information, we know you’ve probably come across the term ‘breathtaking’ to describe skydiving more than once. While the experience is designed to “take your breath away,” we promise this isn’t a literal description. We mean it in a more metaphorical, in a leave-you-speechless-and-astounded kind of way.
Concern over breathing while skydiving is common, but it’s nothing to worry over. This writer can even attest that before her first skydive, she was perturbed by the idea of breathing while in freefall, but it turned out to be no big deal. If you’re worried over how to breathe while skydiving, we have you covered with some first-hand advice!
Keep reading for a few tips on how to breathe, and how not to breathe, during a skydive.
How to Breathe While Skydiving
A regular tandem skydive with Skydive Perris will take you to 12,500 feet above ground level (AGL). From this altitude, the air is slightly thinner, but for an average, healthy individual, breathing should pose no problem.
At Skydive Perris, we also offer High Altitude Low Opening Skydives (HALO), which reach heights of 16,500 feet AGL. At this height, the air is considerably thinner, and without assistance, it would be difficult to breathe. This is why, for HALO skydives, supplemental oxygen is required and provided during the ride to altitude.
When jumping from either altitude, the following suggestions will apply:
While in the plane, take slow, steady breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. This mindful breathing will not only ensure that you have a proper amount of oxygen to remain alert, but it will also help to keep you focused and calm.
Take a deep breath and let out a yell as you leave the aircraft. Intermittently, during freefall, if you start feeling like you cannot catch your breath, yell again! Although seemingly counterintuitive, the yell technique is pretty effective. After all, if you can yell, you can breathe.
In freefall, keep your head up and your eyes on the horizon. This allows you to take in the sights and helps the air to spill around you instead of having it rush into your nose and mouth.
How Not To Breathe While Skydiving
The thought of your first skydive can be overwhelming, but worries over breathing while skydiving don’t need to get you worked up. Below are two skydiving breathing mistakes to avoid:
Do not intentionally hold your breath on a skydive. Not only would the experience of freefall be far less pleasant, but you want to ensure that you are alert, maintaining a good body position, and able to take instructions from your skydive instructor. Do not take quick, shallow breaths. If you breathe in this manner, you could induce hyperventilation. It’s better to take measured, conscious deep breaths. Even while everything is rushing by during freefall, you can still focus on your breathing.
Can You Skydive With Asthma?
While we cannot offer medical advice — and encourage you to address any concerns over skydiving with asthma to your primary care physician — we can tell you that plenty of individuals with asthma participate in tandem skydives and many even go on to become licensed skydivers. As a general rule, ask your doctor about any specific health-related skydiving questions.
Once you’ve been given a clean bill of health, contact our dropzone and come check us out. Schedule your jump with Skydive Perris today!

Can You Breathe While Skydiving?
Curious if you can breathe while skydiving? Yes, you can! A common misconception about skydiving is that you can’t breathe during freefall, but breathing during a skydive is actually not much harder than breathing on the ground. So why do some first-time tandem skydivers say they had trouble breathing? Here, we’ll answer all your questions about breathing while skydiving and share some handy tips from the pros so you can have a successful first skydive.
Is it Hard to Breathe When Skydiving?
If you’ve ever flown on a commercial airplane, you may remember watching the flight attendant demonstrate how to use the yellow oxygen masks that drop from the ceiling in case of pressurization loss in the cabin. Luckily, you won’t have to worry about that happening on your skydiving airplane. Commercial jets typically cruise at altitudes above 30,000 feet. The airplane you’ll use for skydiving, however, will take you to a much lower altitude.
Your skydive will be taking place at an altitude of 14,000 feet, where there is still plenty of oxygen for breathing. If you feel that it’s hard to breathe during your skydive, it’s not because there’s a lack of oxygen.
So Why Do Some People Say They Had Trouble Breathing While Skydiving?
Well, they probably just forgot to breathe! Weird, right? When you skydive, there is so much going on that something as simple as taking a breath can be easily forgotten. It can be pretty overwhelming up there when you’re jumping out of an airplane for the first time. Your mind and body are in sensory overload, so some first-time jumpers unconsciously hold their breath as they exit the airplane. In addition, there’s a lot of wind rushing into your face as you dive toward the ground at 120 mph, so you might instinctively want to keep your mouth closed and hold your breath.
Tips to Help Your Breathe While Skydiving
You can still breathe during activities such as jogging, biking, and singing. Breathing while skydiving is similar to these activities in that it just requires a little bit of technique to do so effectively. Keep these tips in mind to have a great first skydive:
Keep your chin up. If you look straight down at the ground while skydiving, you will inhale 120 mph winds! Keep your chin up and look out toward the horizon so the winds hit your neck and the bottom of your chin instead.
If you look straight down at the ground while skydiving, you will inhale 120 mph winds! Keep your chin up and look out toward the horizon so the winds hit your neck and the bottom of your chin instead. Breathe in through your nose. You’ll want to remain calm and relaxed while skydiving to avoid increasing your chances of having difficulty breathing. The trick to achieving this is to inhale through your nose and exhale out through your mouth.
You’ll want to remain calm and relaxed while skydiving to avoid increasing your chances of having difficulty breathing. The trick to achieving this is to inhale through your nose and exhale out through your mouth. Scream to your heart’s content. Screaming is a great way to express your excitement when you skydive, and it can also remind you that you are able to breathe. Let out a holler while you’re diving toward the earth! If you can scream, you can breathe.
Your first skydive should definitely take your breath away, just not literally! Ready to begin your life-changing journey to the sky? Book your tandem skydive today!

3 Hot Tips To Help You Breathe While Skydiving For The First Time
Nervous about making your first tandem skydive? You are not alone! A common question first time skydivers have for us is, “Is it hard to breathe while skydiving?” Lucky for you, breathing on a skydive is not much harder than breathing on the ground. You will have a successful first skydive if you can remember these 3 hot tips:
1. Keep Your Chin Up
Keeping your chin up while you skydive will ensure that the 120 mph air will hit your neck and bottom of chin. If you look straight down and open your mouth to scream you will inhale 120 mph wind!
2. Eyes On The Horizon
A good tip to help you keep your chin up is to keep your eyes looking outward towards the horizon. This is where you see all the beauty of the ground below. Looking straight down limits your perspective during your tandem skydive and also increases your chance of having difficulty breathing.
3. Breathe In Through Your Nose
What is the trick to enjoying your first skydive? Remain calm, relax and enjoy the thrill. One easy way to achieve this is by breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth during your skydive. Once under an open parachute you will have no trouble breathing and can talk with ease to your skydive instructor.
