HOW TO CARE FOR A SURFBOARD OR STAND UP PADDLE BOARD
Proper surfboard care is the difference between a surfboard that lasts for one season and a board that lasts for decades. Simple things like rinsing your board after you surf, using your surfboard bag for storage/transport, and repairing dings and cracks the right way will extend the life of your board significantly.
If you care about your fiberglass or epoxy surfboards and paddle boards, just follow the five tips below to ensure they’re in perfect working condition for the next big swell or SUP adventure. If you want to learn how to care for a foam surfboard, the same steps will apply to this type of board. But remember that your soft top surfboard is far more durable than a hard board.
USE A BOARD BAG
TRANSPORT:
Sun rays and heat destroy surfboards and paddle boards. If you transport your board long distances on top of your car via roof racks, it’s a good idea to use a day bag or a board sock. The sun will turn the foam in your board yellow if it’s left exposed for too long. Yellow foam is a clear sign that the material is degrading.
STORAGE:
No matter how carefully you store your boards, they’re bound to fall over or get hit by a hard object. It’s not fun, but this is a simple fact of life. A padded board bag is the easiest way to minimize wear and tear and keep your surfboard or paddle board out of harm’s way. If you own a large collection or quiver of boards, you could purchase or build a surfboard rack exactly like the ones you’d find in a surf shop. REMOVING YOUR SURF WAX
Keeping your board clean might not make its life longer, but cleaning it incorrectly will do a lot of damage. Never use harsh chemicals or metal tools to clean or dewax your board. The proper way to dewax your surfboard is with a plastic “wax comb” that you can pick up at any surf shop for about $2.00. We recommend simply leaving your board in the sun for about 5 minutes (don’t forget about it) to let the wax get soft, then gently scrape it off. Many of the dents and dings your board gets will come from sources outside the water. Buy a board bag when you buy your board and keep it safely ensconced within whenever you’re not on the ocean.

Repair the Dings
If you ding your board—and you will—don’t wait to get it repaired. Dings and cracks weaken the integrity of the board and leave it open to delamination. Dry the ding completely, maybe with the use of a hair dryer, and pull out some sand paper and UV solar resin. Sand the area until you have a good, clean pocket then apply the solar resin to fill it back in. Let the resin dry in the sun then use the sand paper to smooth it down and make it flush with the rest of the board.
Most surfboard repair kits will come with everything you need. Better yet, just take it to a professional and let them handle it.
Transport it Properly
Add a surfboard rack to the top of your car or jeep and set it up so your surfboard isn’t hanging over the sides of your vehicle. You don’t want another driver to swipe it and turn it into a boogie board. Consider throwing on some extra padding on the rack to make it softer. 5. Wax in Dings
Once, a ding repair dude got angry with me in Hawaii as I’d put wax in my dings.
‘What’s that shit in your dings?’ he asked.
‘Wax’ I replied, meekly, realising I’d committed an infringement.
‘It’s a nightmare to get out… Don’t!’
He had two huge dogs that might have been dobermans and when he said ‘Don’t’ their hackles stood up and they snarled baring massive yellow fangs. That was the last time I ever did that.
6. When Should I Wax?
The wax-before-wetsuit, still in clothes vs. wax-in-wetsuit last thing before paddling out debate rages on, with more heat than light. It’s one of those topics they say never to talk about over dinner, along with politics, religion and Stand Up Paddling.
We’ll say this: Wax is almost always a finite resource, so get your raft waxed a.s.a.p, so when crew inevitably ask ‘Dude, got any?’ you’re already taken care of. Look after no.1!
