How do I adjust my headrest?

How do I adjust my headrest?

Headrests are actually head restraints, designed as a safety feature to help protect both the drivers and passenger(s) from injury should the vehicle be involved in a collision. To help minimize the risk of neck injury in the event of a crash, the head restraint must be adjusted properly.

Here are guidelines for proper positioning of head restraints:

The top of the head restraint should be as high as your head .

. The head restraint should be positioned as close to your head as possible.

Before you start, ensure your seat is in a comfortable position.

Sit in an upright position with the base of your spine as far back as possible.

Do not recline the seat back more than 30 degrees from the vertical position.

Make sure that your driving position is comfortable and that you can maintain full control of your vehicle at all times.

Here’s how to adjust your head restraint:*

Adjust the top of the head restraint so that it’s level with the top of your head. Pull the head restraint up until it is level with the top of your head.

Note: Some head restraint adjustments require you to push a button at the base of the headrest to release and drop it to its lowest position before raising it to the desired position. Adjust the head restraint so that it’s as close to your head as possible. Grab the top of the head restraint and pull it forward. When you release it, it will spring back to the upright position.

Then you can tilt or pivot it to the optimum position.

*For the exact adjustment of your vehicle’s head restraints, please see your Owner Manuals.

WARNING:

To minimize the risk of neck injury in the event of a crash, the driver and passenger occupants should not operate the vehicle until the head restraint has been adjusted to its proper position. The driver should never adjust the head restraint while the vehicle is in motion.

The adjustable head restraint is a safety device. Whenever possible, it should be installed and properly adjusted while the adjoining seat is occupied. It’s important to install the head restraint properly to minimize the risk of neck injury in the event of a crash.

Why Are Car Seat Headrests Uncomfortable? The Reason It Contours Awkwardly

Why Are Car Seat Headrests Uncomfortable? The Reason It Contours Awkwardly

Even in the most luxurious models, sitting in a car seat never feels wholly comfortable due to the frustrating, unnatural contour of the headrest. While the rest of the seat is ergonomically shaped around your body, the headrest awkwardly juts out. Why is that?

Here’s why car seat headrests are uncomfortable and feel very different than resting your head in a La-Z-Boy.

Break-Neck Speeds: Reasons why you’d love owning a pre-owned Mustang

The reason car seat headrests are angled weirdly

The reason car seat headrests are uncomfortable is because they’re designed for safety, not coziness.

In 2008, the Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration established a rule that vehicles must provide sufficient protection in collisions to reduce whiplash injuries in rear-end collisions. That includes “a requirement limiting the distance between the back of an occupant’s head and the occupant’s head restraint.”

To prevent your head from yanking backward in a rear-end collision (reward hyperflexion), the headrest pushes your head forward and down to keep it close to your spine. Though, some headrests do admittedly protrude much further than they should (which some people think is because of inaccurate crash test dummies).

It’s also possible that your car’s headrest is far more uncomfortable than it should be because you never adjusted it properly. The bottom of the headrest should touch the base of the skull where it merges with the upper neck, and be 2-3 inches behind your head.

In addition to lowering and raising, the headrests also can tilt forward and backward based on your preferred seat angle. Also, you’re not supposed to have the seat at a straight vertical angle — it should be leaning back 10-20 degrees.

When you adjust your car seat angle and head restraint, make sure that your spine and head are properly aligned.

Why Does Your Credit Score Matter When Buying a Car? Here’s the reason you need to know

Hacks for adjusting your car headrest position

I haven’t personally used Gokhalemethod’s stretchsit cushion, but it looks like it could be helpful.

There is a more aggressive and radical approach, shown in this video. It might be the best solution for some people, but well,… maybe not for everyone:

If you’re stuck with a poorly designed car seat, perhaps the solution for most people will be found by doing a Google search for

car back support for headrest problem.

At least you’ll then be able to find something that allows you to rest forward of your misaligned headrest while still giving you the best support for your back.

Example of car seat back support made by Feagar. No business relationship with Easy Spine.

If you’re about to get a new car, some manufacturers make their headrests so they can be adjusted forward or back, as well as up and down.

Before concluding that the tilt of your headrest cannot be adjusted, it’s worth checking with your dealer. All too often the option is there but obscure and unknown to its owner.

Of course, height is also important. If you’re too short, the solution is easy – finding the right auxiliary cushion to sit on. If you’re too tall, sad to say, best option might be to trade in your car. But for your posture, sanity, and comfort, at least keep the following checklist in mind when shopping around for a new one:

Fully adjustable headrest

Headroom

Legroom

Height-adjustable seats

Tilt and telescoping steering wheel
