The linings on the shoes are comparatively narrow at only 30mm width, the drums are small, and the “thickness” of the lining material is unusually thin.

Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Brake Drum

Drum brakes are a common type of braking system found on the rear wheels of many vehicles. While they serve the same purpose as disc brakes to slow the vehicle, they do so in a slightly different manner. Instead of using calipers to squeeze pads onto a rotor, brake drums use wheel cylinders to push brake shoes against the inside of a brake drum to slow the wheel. As they function using friction and contact, they eventually wear out over time and need to be replaced. When they do go bad or begin to have a problem, usually brake drums will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver that a problem has occurred.

1. Unusual brake pedal feel

One of the first symptoms of bad or failing drum brakes is unusual brake pedal feel. If the brake drums are worn excessively they can cause vibrations that may be felt in the pedal. Worn drums may also cause shuddering or pulsating that will become noticeable once you step on the pedal.

2. Scraping noises when brakes are pressed

Another symptom commonly associated with bad brake drums is abnormal sounds. If the brake drums become excessively worn, they may give off a scraping or scratching sound when the brakes are depressed. This usually means the brake shoes have also become severely worn, and a close inspection would be required to determine the exact cause of the noise.

3. Loose parking brake

A loose parking brake is another symptom that is commonly associated with bad or failing drum brakes. As the drum brakes wear, the shoes may not be able to squeeze against the inside of the drum as easily, and as a result, the parking brake may not work as efficiently. When the drums are worn, you may notice that the car will slip a few inches after the parking brake is engaged. This may also be caused by a misadjusted brake cable, as well as potentially worn shoes. So it is recommended to have the vehicle properly inspected if you suspect this may be the case.

The brake drums are an important component that is critical to the proper operation of the vehicle’s braking system. For this reason, if you suspect that they may be worn, or may be having an issue, have the brake system inspected by a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, to determine if the drums should be replaced.

How to Check Brake Pads

Believe it or not, most of the time you can check pad wear without taking off the wheels. And you don’t need a mechanical engineering degree to do it. Usually, you can see the brake pad through the wheel and won’t need to remove it. Once you find the brake pad, notice its thickness. If it appears to be very thin, it’s almost used up. Some brake pads have a slot in the center that serves several engineering purposes, but also doubles as a wear indicator. Check to see how much of that slot is left. If it’s almost gone, you need new pads [source: CDX eTextbook].

In some instances, you may need to remove the wheel but can inspect your pads through an inspection opening on the caliper itself. This is a small window that gives you a cross-section view of the rotor and pads. The less material you have left, the closer you are to needing new ones. (You can see a diagram of a disc brake here.) With the wheel removed, you should be able to determine the pad’s thickness pretty well. If you want to take it a step further and inspect the condition of the pad itself, you’ll need to remove the caliper from the rotor. If you’ve never done this before, pick up an automotive repair manual, or take the car to a mechanic.

Brake dust is the most obvious sign of brake wear. The heavier the car, the more brake dust you’ll see on the front wheels versus the rear. If you start to notice less brake dust, that’s a sign that you may have worn your brake pads down to the metal backing.

Your ears can help determine brake pad wear as well. If you hear a screeching metallic noise when you hit the brakes, it could be the wear indicator. Wear indicators are small metal tabs designed to come into contact with the rotor once the pad wears to a certain point. Wear indicators are great in that they give you a heads up that it’s time for a change before the pad wears too thin [source: CDX eTextbook].

So far we’ve talked about how sight and sound can help detect brake wear. Let’s look at how feeling can help too in the next section.

How Long Does a Brake Drum Last?

The front and rear brakes on a car take a lot of abuse over time. On most older vehicles, the front brakes will be discs, while the rear ones will be drums. The drum brakes on a car are an essential part of having maximum braking power. Over time, the drums and shoes on the rear part of a vehicle will have to do a lot of work and may begin to show some signs of wear. When the brake pedal on your car is pushed, the brake shoes on the rear of the car will press against the brake drums to bring the vehicle to a stop. The drums are only used when the brakes of a car are applied.

The brake drums on your car are built to last for about 200,000 miles. In some cases, the drums will wear out sooner due to worn out internal components that put more strain on the drum. As your brake drums begin to wear down, they will actually become smaller. A mechanic will measure the drums to gauge whether or not they need to be replaced or if they can be turned instead. If the damage to the brake drum is bad enough, it will begin to cause problems with the brake shoes.

In most cases, brake drums will be replaced in pairs due to the issues that have one new and one worn drum can cause. When a professional is hired to replace the drums, they will check the wheel cylinders and other parts of the wheel braking system to ensure the drum has not damaged them. Here are a few of the things that you may notice when it is time to replace your brake drums.

The back of car is shaking when trying to brake

The car pulls to one side when applying the brakes

A lot of noise from the rear of the car when trying to bring the car to a stop

As soon as you start to notice that you are experiencing issues with your brake drums, you will need to get the brake drums checked and/or replaced by a professional mechanic.
