How I managed to climb from gold to masters in 2 months
Hey everyone, hope you all are doing well! Anyways, I came on the forums to share my experience with climbing out of gold and reaching very high diamond/masters. So basically I posted a while ago that I was considering buying a smurf account… Well I did that exact thing. I bought a brand new account, I did placements, and overall everything was going well! I was playing against mid diamond players and I won 3/5 games. I got placed gold and I wasn’t to happy (note I was solo queuing)… For a moment I was just about to give up and realize maybe I really do belong in gold. But part of me said that I know I’m better than the average player, and I was right!! I took a break for a few days came back to the game with a different mentality, and once the new season came out I grinded, won all 5/5 of the new placements and I was in plat before I knew it!!! I was dominating in plat up until around 2900… I noticed that the intensity was picking up a bit and I was still doing decent in my games. I was frustrated and I didn’t know how to get better. My friend in gm told me to watch my replays, and analyze what I was doing wrong. I did that and I didn’t think much of it at first and it almost felt like it was making me worse… I started watching streamers such as SamitoFPS, and I learned how to position myself, practice my game sense, etc. I was quickly able to climb the more hours I put into the game. I peaked masters then quickly fell back down to 3400 ( I was most likely lucky with the teammates I had). So my point is that anyone can climb and even if it seems impossible try to improve on things that you do wrong, put in the time to want to get better! I hope some of you learned from my experience and I thank you all for your time!
Edit: I appreciate every single one of you for defending me in the comments <3! Remember the point of this post is to tell my story and how I was able to achieve my goal. I encourage everyone that has difficulty climbing out of a lower rank to keep practicing and set yourself a goal!
Hard Truths to Climbing
I went from a 2800 peak to now hitting 3417 in this season alone.
I decided that I was gonna set a goal for me, and that was to hit Masters. I’m getting very close, but I’m not there yet. But this journey so far has taught me a lot about what it means to climb ranked and improve as a player. Everyone improves and learns differently, so this guide may not apply to you. Don’t take my word like gospel, but only as a grain of salt.
This is the steps that I used to climb 600 SR in a season.
~~~
Take the advice of those who’re better than you
If someone has peaked higher than you, then that means they’ve reached a point you haven’t. They’ve gotten to a rank that you haven’t be able to achieve, so that means that they most likely know or have something that you don’t. Listen to the advice of those that are better than you, and take it to heart. Find people you can trust and trust their word.
Too many times I’ve played against people who get hardstuck at their rank and get angry at everyone else because they think that everything they think is right. That mindset is fucking stupid, even Top 500s learn something new all the time. Listen and pay attention, write down notes if you have to.
~~~
Work on your mechanics
Mechanics can, quite literally, climb you all the way to Diamond. High Diamond, too. If you are cracked enough, you can even reach Masters. My Top 500 friend, Texasmoneyjr, has told me that mechanics is one of the most under appreciated parts of someone’s game when it comes to climbing.
For me, I had to work on my Ana aim. I also had to work on my sleep dart aim and my nade placement. Mechanics single handedly helped me climb 200 SR alone, and I only practiced my mechanics for around 2 weeks. Who knows how high I could climb if I keep training my aim?

Watch pro players/study VOD reviews
I’m a Flex Support, that means I play a lot of Ana and Bap. So I would go on YouTube and watch Ana and Bap videos. Specifically, I would watch the Ml7 Unranked to GM series. Seriously, these Unranked to GM series are literally your best friends. There is just about a series for every single hero. Literally, go watch these things. Just search up “Unranked to GM (insert your hero here)” and you can learn so much.
Also, Jayne has plenty of VOD reviews. These things are great for someone who’s trying to climb. They teach you things you wouldn’t normally get from just playing. And don’t only watch VODs on your hero or your role, you can learn a lot about how the game works from understanding the basics of other heroes. And if you understand the game better, you can learn better gamesense. And gamesense is always SUPER good.
~~~
Find a consistent partner to play with
For me, one of the easiest ways for me to climb was to find a good player to duo with. I’ve played with multiple tank players, all of which are good and can fill their role. You don’t need a carry, just someone who can do his role and not fuck it up. That makes your job easier and helps you learn how to play your role better.
One good way to find duo partners is to join an Open Division team. I’ve met plenty of good friends playing for teams and have always improved my fastest playing for Open Division teams.
Another good way is to go find public Overwatch Discord servers. I personally don’t use them, but they’re very easy to use and not as intimidating as joining an Open Division team. I still say that joining a team is the best option, though.
And my final suggestion is using the”Looking For Group” system. I’ve used that a couple of times to fuck around and honestly it’s fun. Not my ideal method but it works for some people who want a quick duo.
~~~
PLAY COMPETITIVE AND PLAY IT A LOT.
A lot of people are scared to play competitive, but honestly it’s just quick play with Golden guns. I play the same exact way in competitive as quick play, because SR doesn’t represent your actual skill. Really think about it. Does your actual physical and mental skill change whenever you lose? No, your skill stays the same. The only thing that changes is a number inside of a system. That number shouldn’t mean anything to you besides a general estimate of your ability to perform.
If you have bad Competitive anxiety, like I used to, then get an alternate account. That helped with me a little bit. I can’t really help with that because I just played and it just went away with time as I forced myself to play and be relaxed. There’s probably plenty other tutorials and guides on the internet to help with that, so go read those. I’m just some 3.4k support player that can heal and not die.
~~~
Do NOT one trick, be flexible
One thing that helped me climbed was learning which heroes to play in which comps. If you one trick a hero, then you might play in a comp which you won’t get a lot of value. For example, I learned that an Ana is much more valuable than a Bap in a Rein comp. So I play Ana in those comps, which gives me a advantage because she naturally synergies more with Rein.
You’ll see these GM players one trick certain heroes in Unranked to GM series, but you need to remember. You’re not GM. You do not have the skill of these gaming warlords. So don’t try it. This actually brings me into my next point.
~~~
You are NOT a Grandmaster.
If you are actually a Grandmaster, why’re you reading this? But if you’re not, then don’t act like you are. GMs reached that rank because they get a tremendous amount of value every single fight, and have a deep understanding of their heroes and the game. So don’t try and do crazy shit because you saw a Grandmaster do it.
I used to wanna do some of the crazy plays that Ml7 did because he inspired me. But the reason why Ml7 can make these crazy plays is because he understands his heroes and the game at such a deep level that he knows he can get away with it and can pull it off. Someone like me or you doesn’t have that understanding. So until you can think like ML7, then don’t do it.
~~~
This is just about everything that I used to climb.
If any of this advice helped even one person win one more game, then I have done my job. I wish you all good luck in your ranked games, and maybe one day we’ll see each other in ranked. Goodnight, and Merry Christmas!
Bronze Overwatch streamer explains how he climbed to Grandmaster
Michael Gwilliam . 1 year ago
Overwatch Twitch streamer Asa has been playing the game since all the way back in Season 4 where he began his journey down in Bronze. Despite placing so far down the rank totem pole, he managed to eventually reach GM, but how?
Ranking up in Overwatch can be a serious grind. After playing five placement games on a desired role, the game will put you in a skill rating tier ranging all the way Bronze to Master with players then having to win to reach Grandmaster.
This grind can take a long time, however. Wins earn players around 20 SR, so the journey from say a 2,500 Platinum Rank to 3,500 Master can take many matches.
For Asa, he first began with only 800 SR, but over time, he managed to climb through multiple ranks to reach the highest peak he’s at today with 4,018.
Speaking to Dexerto, the 16-year-old explained how he managed to pull it off and the challenges he faced along the way.
One major problem he had to overcome was hardware limitations. “The hardware I used was awful. Dealing with an awful setup was the main thing that held me back,” he explained.
“Hardware improvement was a very gradual process, and although it helps, it doesn’t define a player,” he added. “You can play on 60fps with a $10 mouse and be better than someone with a decked out setup.”
Blizzard Entertainment Going from Bronze to GM is an impressive feat.
According to Asa, his biggest improvement method came from playing in an organized setting and joining a team. “I found coaching there and over the years it has shaped me as a player the most out of anything. I highly recommend looking into organized teamplay if you’re trying to improve because it truly is an incredible source for learning.”
Despite going from Bronze to Gold in just two seasons, he did face some difficulties in Platinum and Diamond before eventually breaking through to reach Masters and Grandmaster four seasons later.
That all said, the Canadian believes the best way for anyone stuck in low ELOs to “realize that you’re no better than your teammates and you deserve the rank you have.”
Blizzard Entertainment Ranking up can be a serious grind.
“A lot of players in all ranks struggle with ego, and I used to as well. The only true way to climb is to understand what level you’re at and working hard at trying to improve. It’s a pretty simple formula: you get better than the people at your rank, you win more games. Simple as that,” the streamer stated.
For anyone currently stuck in ELO hell, following in Asa’s footsteps could be as simple as setting your ego aside and focusing on yourself. After all, if he can do it, what’s stopping you?
