2 CONNECTION

3 CONFIGURATION

Spirit Wifi-Link offers you user friendly configuration from any device that support WiFi connection and web browser.

To open it, you can proceed in this way:

Connect to the Wifi module. Default SSID (Wifi site name): Spirit Wifi-Link. The module is by default in the Access Point mode. You can connect to the AP directly in a normal way. After connection, your device will get IP address automaticaly. Open your web browser. Usually any modern web browser with JavaScript support can be used. Enter the module with this address: http://192.168.4.1 By entering „192.168.4.1“ you will get into the configuration.Here you can change any parameter including changing SSID,password or wireless mode.

With the latest module firmware Spirit Settings is available directly from your web browser!

For beginners we recommend default settings.

AP+Client Mode (For experienced users only)

Module is able to connect to an existing WiFi station (e.g. your home network). By entering the configuration interface, you can set the AP+Client mode. In this mode you can find your network and connect to it. In this way, module can be accessed from any device, that is connected to the same network, even via an ethernet cable.

If you are connected to an existing WiFi station, the module will receive second IP address. You can find such IP address in the configuration interface. You can connect to the interface from the second IP address when accessing from your network. You can also access the internet or module at the same time.

Connecting to an existing network

Connect to the Spirit Wifi-Link. Enter the WiFi Client section in the web interface. Click the „Switch to AP+Client mode“ (if not already). Wait a few seconds to display all available Wi-Fi networks. In the WiFi Association select Wi-Fi network you want to connect. Enter password of the Wi-Fi network (if required). Click the Connect button and wait for the success notification. Remember the address that will appear in the „WiFi address“ entry – this IP address should be used to connect the module through the network you are connected to.

3.1 Auto Turn-Off feature

To allow operation of the Wifi-Link module during a flight you can enable the Auto Turn-Off feature. This feature will automatically turn off the module if no device will connect to it (at the Access Point created by the module) or if the module itself will not connect to any infrastructure (any other WiFi network that pilot can program).

After power up of the model the module will start counting the time. If there is no connection until configured period of time the Status LED will turn Off which mean that the module is completely turned off. Then it is completely safe to fly with the model.

Unfortunately that doesn’t quite mean that all of Spirit Airlines’ fleet has Wi-Fi, though. Spirit Airlines hasn’t installed Wi-Fi on its Airbus A319s, and no decision has yet been made as to whether or not these planes will get Wi-Fi.

Spirit Airlines’ fleet currently consists of roughly 180 planes, and 31 of those are Airbus A319s, meaning that currently around 80% of the fleet has Wi-Fi. Spirit has well over 100 A320neos & A321neos on order, and those will all be delivered with Wi-Fi as well, so the percentage of planes with Wi-Fi will continue to increase.

Spirit Airlines has partnered with Thales for Wi-Fi, and the high-speed connectivity works across Spirit’s network in the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. This Wi-Fi is fast enough to offer streaming, and Spirit promises an “at-home level of experience in the air,” though I imagine that might be a stretch at times.

Installing inflight wifi services aboard its “fit fleet” of all relatively new Airbus A320 family aircraft has taken the better part of the last three years but is nearly complete at this point. The “Ka” band receivers offer the promise of high-speed internet inflight.

Neither Frontier nor Allegiant (America’s other ULCCs) has installed wifi aboard their aircraft. Southwest, one of the nation’s leading low-cost carriers installed its internet capability as it began to compete for business traffic. Adding wifi is among other business-friendly changes Spirit has made in the last couple of years.

Fast, and Cheap

I sampled the service on a trip from Pittsburgh to Fort Myers and was shocked by both the affordability and the speed offered.

Connecting to the service on my laptop I navigated to spiritwifi.com and found a standard inflight wifi connection screen and the following two pricing levels. Initial speculation was that internet access would be offered at a price of $6.50 but on my Spirit Airlines flight, I was able to connect at two different speed levels for either $3 or $5 for a higher rate of speed.

Compared to other prices for US carriers, Spirit wifi was surprisingly inexpensive. For comparison, short flights run between $8-15 domestically on other carriers like United Airlines, around $25 for transcontinental flights. Light internet usage for a phone was just $3 for this flight with about two hours of usable internet based on our flight time.

Unlike most carriers, Spirit advertises that guests can stream from their services (Netflix, Hulu, HBOMax, etc.) whereas others prohibit such. However, that would take a reasonable amount of download speed to achieve. Only JetBlue advertises a competing level of services.

In my experience, download speeds consistently hovered just shy of 10mbps, which was a welcome surprise from GoGo service offered elsewhere.

I was busy with work so I didn’t have a chance to try streaming though I regret not at least firing up a streaming app for long enough to see if it would work. That said, standard definition typically requires 3-10 mbps, 1080p HD needs 10-18 mbps so that would be a greater challenge based on my speed test results.

Our trip was domestic, but as the Spirit network extends extensively throughout the Caribbean and Latin America. I couldn’t speak to coverage en route or within foreign markets.

Conclusion
