How To Easily Extend BNC Cables For Security Cameras
You know the ideal position for your security camera, but you’ve run into a problem: the cable from the DVR to the camera isn’t long enough. More importantly, if you move the camera’s position you won’t have complete coverage. Wouldn’t it be helpful if you could extend the BNC cable as much as you needed?
How to easily extend BNC cables for security cameras or splice them. You can easily extend a BNC cable using a coupler. In most instances, you won’t even need to splice the wires, but it is a possibility. Luckily splicing BNC cables is an easy and routine task.
Using a coupler will extend your BNC cable but you may wonder what they are, and what are the steps to follow if the wires need to be spliced? In the case that you need to splice some of the wires to get everything running correctly, follow the guide and information laid out in this article after familiarizing yourself with some of the components and how they work.
BNC Cable Components
A Bayonet Neill-Concelman (BNC) cable, which contains two 18-gauge wires along with a coaxial cable, is designed to send video from a security camera to the monitor or DVR. It is also the camera’s power source. When the cable is too short, a BNC connector, which is fairly inexpensive on Amazon, will easily extend it by attaching two cables.
This coupler features quick-connects on both ends, so all you need to do is attach the original BNC cable to the new one. You’ll want to pay attention to the cable ends because they’re used for different purposes. Case-in-point, one is coaxial and the other is for power, so be careful not to mismatch them.
If you do mix the ends up, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to get your security camera to turn on or be able to transmit images to the DVR properly. Most BNC cables also connect to the devices via the male ends, so you’ll also want to take note of this when you’re attaching the two BNC cables to opposite sides of the connector.
Extending BNC Cables
When you’ve run out of cable before connecting it to the camera, it’s not a big problem. You don’t have to move the camera from its prime position, you just need to extend the BNC cables with a BNC connector (on Amazon). However, before you attach the BNC connector, you do want to consider the distance. If the original cable was over 300 feet, you will need to move the camera closer. When longer cables are used signal interference and other problems can develop.
Extending the BNC cable isn’t only easy, it’s also inexpensive. The extra cable comes with the connector so you don’t have to purchase anything else. To connect the cables, remember that there are two different ends. Do not mix up power and coaxial. The connector should have come with instructions that include diagrams.
You can also find packages that come with several cables and BNC connectors so you can handle multiple cameras. Having extra cables and connectors also allows you to string longer runs, so you might not have to move a security camera that is over 300 feet away.
Splicing BNC Cables
Sometimes, a BNC connector doesn’t work and this can have a few causes. The most common one is that your security camera run is extremely long. You may have one on a garage roof away from the house or you’re monitoring a large perimeter. Whatever the reason the connector isn’t working, your next option is to splice the BNC cables.
It is a little more complicated than using a connector, but only because you’ll also have to get an adapter. You’ll have to get more of them if you have several security cameras you want to connect. With an adaptor, you’ll have to add male ends to the cables but to do this, you’ll need to know how to slice cables.
Here’s a great video showing how splicing BNC cables works, and you can also reference our written instructions below. With a little time and effort, you’ll be able to splice these cables to create your own customized security system.
How to Splice BNC Cables
An easy method to use when you want to splice two BNC cables together is to start by stripping off the covering over the wire. A small, sharp knife works best, but be careful you don’t accidentally cut the wires. After the covering is removed, you want to start carefully removing the shielding so as not to sever the wires.
The shielding is comprised of multiple layers of insulation and wire wrapped together. The inner wire is the one responsible for transmitting the signal, while the outer one is a shield that helps to prevent interference which is a common problem when functioning at long distances. To remove the shielding, you want to carefully pull the interwoven wires out of the cable using a twisting motion.
After the wires are out of the cable, cut the insulation away from the center wire, and repeat these steps on the new cable. Next, you need to connect the center wires from each cable which you can do by crimping the wires together and using a butt connector. If you want to avoid buying any additional components, you can also solder them.
Finishing Steps
If you’re not using a butt connector, you want to tape the wires together, followed by twisting the pieces into a braid. Once the wires are twisted into one, solder them together. For additional security, seal the splice with heat-shrink tubing.
Now, you’re ready to connect the two cables. You want red wires connected to red ones and the same for black wires because if you mismatch the colored cables, you could cause shortages. You can solder the wires in place or use a connector, preferably a BNC one. Once the two cable wires are connected seal it with another piece of heat-shrink tubing.
Conclusion
The cables aren’t always long enough to connect your security camera to the DVR and in this case, you’ll want to use a BNC connector and also make sure your camera is compatible with DVR in the first place using our article. It’s surprisingly simple to use the connector, and if it doesn’t work there are other options including splicing the cables together. It does take a little more time but you won’t have to move your security cameras, even if it’s more than 300-feet from your house.

What is a BNC female connector?
This BNC adapter provides the ability to interconnect two devices with BNC male interfaces. A common use for this device is to provide a coupling between two cables with BNC male connectors for when you need to extend the length of your BNC cables and can be used to join two male BNC plugs, or as gender changers.
Are all BNC cables compatible?
Types. BNC connectors are most commonly made in 50 and 75 ohm versions, matched for use with cables of the same characteristic impedance. The 75 ohm types can sometimes be recognized by the reduced or absent dielectric in the mating ends but this is by no means reliable.
What does BNC stand for in BNC connector?
(Bayonet Nut Coupling) A commonly used plug and socket for audio, video and networking applications that provides a tight connection. Using a mount somewhat similar to the way a bayonet (knife) is mounted onto the end of a rifle, BNCs are used to connect a variety of different coaxial cable types.
Can you splice a BNC cable?
How to Splice BNC Cables. An easy method to use when you want to splice two BNC cables together is to start by stripping off the covering over the wire. Next, you need to connect the center wires from each cable which you can do by crimping the wires together and using a butt connector.

Is BNC and coax cable the same?
BNC connector is used in coaxial cable for quick connector of radio frequency. BNC is known as Bayonet Neill-Concelman. BNC connector is used for composite video on commercial video devices. RG6 is a type of coaxial cable used for residential and commercial application and has a characteristic impedance of 75 ohms.
Why is it called BNC cable?
A little bit of history: The connector was named the BNC (for Bayonet Neill–Concelman) after its bayonet mount locking mechanism and its inventors, Paul Neill and Carl Concelman. Neill worked at Bell Labs and also invented the N connector; Concelman worked at Amphenol and also invented the C connector.
What is a BNC connector used for?

What is the difference between these pre-made security camera cable and RG59 Siamese coaxial cable?
Pre-made Siamese security camera cable comes various lengths with the BNC male connectors pre-attached both ends of the cable. The security camera power portion of the pre-made cable has a female 2.1mm power connection on one end and a male 2.1mm power connection on the other end. RG59 Siamese coax cable comes in raw spools with no BNC connectors attached. This allows installers to custom cut the cable length so there is little or no leftover slack. It is also easier to run cable through walls when there are no BNC ends (because the hole can be smaller).
The video cable on the pre-mades is stranded copper so that it is more flexible. The video cable of RG59 Siamese is a solid copper center conductor. The solid center conductor allows the video signal to be run longer distances. For example, you can run analog CCTV camera video 700 feet using RG59, but are limited to around 250 feet with pre-made cable.
The power cable in RG59 Siamese is 18 gauge. The power cable in pre-made cables is typically thinner and can not carry low voltage power as far.
In summary, CCTV Camera Pros recommends using RG59 Siamese when possible. If the distance from your DVR to your security camera is 150 feet or less, pre-made cable works well. For cable runs above veiling tiles or other applications that are simple, pre-made cable is a good choice. If you are running your cable through drywall, wood, brick, concrete, or outdoors we usually recommend using RG59 Siamese cable. It is much more durable and can run much longer distances.
Can two security camera cables connect together to extend the length?
Yes, but this type of application should be used with caution. Installers can use one of these double female connectors to connect the BNC male connectors of two cables together. The power cable is male on one end and female on the other, so no additional connector is needed to connect the power portion of the cables.
The problem that many installers run into power drop. The power cable in pre-made security camera cable should generally only be used for cable distances of 150 feet or less depending on the voltage requirement of the camera.
Can pre-made BNC camera cable be used with 12V DC and 24VAC security cameras?
Yes, BNC camera cable is made for both low voltage types.
Can pre-made cable be cut and BNC connectors re-attached?
No. Pre-made security camera cables are not meant to be cut. If you cut then, you will NOT be able to attach new BNC connectors and the cables will be useless. Same goes for the power portion of the cable. DO NOT CUT pre-made cable!
Can pre-made cables be used with a multi-camera power supply?
Yes, these cables can be used to wire to a single power transformer or multi-channel power supply box.
Are these cables compatible with cameras and DVRs from other manufacturers?
Yes, these cables can be used as longer replacement cables and cable extensions from all manufacturers including Swann, Lorex, Night Owl, FLIR, Samsung and all others. We have helped many customers who want longer cables or higher quality cables that the ones included with their box store systems.
Do these cables work with 4K security cameras?
Yes. Our pre-made cables have been tested with 4K security cameras including AHD and HD-TVI format.
We now have a complete premade Siamese cable wiring guide. Please reference it to see many examples of how pre-made cables can be used to wire analog CCTV and HD CCTV cameras that work over coax.
Follow these instructions to learn how to connect pre-made Siamese cables to CCTV cameras, power supplies, and a video surveillance DVR.
Reference this diagram to note which end of the cable connects to the camera and which connects to the DVR.
The BNC connector on the camera end of the cable simple pushes and twists onto the BNC connector of the camera. The power lead of the camera simply pushes onto the power lead of the Siamese cable.
This is what it looks like when the cable is connected to the camera.
If you are using an single security camera power supply, this is what it looks like when you connect the power supply to the cable. The BNC connector will plug into one of the BNC video inputs on the back of your DVR.
If you are using a CCTV power supply box with pre-made cable, you need to attach a PT-3 power lead to the DVR side of the cable. This is because power supply boxes do not use the 2.1mm plug connector on the cable. Power supply boxes have + / – screw terminals.
The wire end of the PT-3 connects to the s crew terminals of the power supply box
Power supply boxes are typically wall mounted near the DVR. This image shows how the video and power cable can be pulled apart so that the cable can easily reach both the power supply box and the DVR.
