I figured out how Raikage and Killer Bee mange to defend against the instant attack that is Amaterasu. Before using Amaterasu both Itachi and Sasuke close the eye they are going to use it with, the eye then bleeds, and when opened becomes blood shot; you can see this here:

So as soon as you see these indications you use a speedy jutsu to counter; Such as something to block the Uchiha’s line of sight, a Bushin Feint, or escaping with Shunshin or Doton.

With this method in mind;

If you are Intelligent or Experienced enough to realized that the closing of the eye, bleed, and the eye becoming blood shot are a sign of a Dojutsu being used you have the ability to attempt a counter.

This means intelligence and experience matter a great deal because more intelligent/experienced shinobi would be able to realize the Uchiha is using a Dojutsu quicker then less experienced/intelligent ninja. The quicker you realize it the more time you have to prep or think up a counter and put that counter into effect.

If you realize it when the Uchiha closes his eye then you have more time then, if you realize it when the Uchiha’s eye bleeds, and more time then when the Uchiha opens his eye and its blood shot.

Or You can simply have Knowledge on how the MS works and thus don’t have to figure it out and as soon as you see the Uchiha close his eye or it starts to bleed you can immediately use a counter, which is a bit easier depending on your intelligence and experience level.

Now you have to have quite high physical Speed or Hand-Seal Speed combined with a speedy jutsu to counter, but its not impossible if you use this method. This is how i believe Raikage was able to time his Shunshin right to dodge Amaterasu and this is how Killer Bee was able to put his Tentacle in front of his face to defend against Amaterasu.

So i wouldn’t be surprised if some one like Kakashi with insanely fast hand-seals could Doton underground or throw down a Doton wall before the Jutsu hit him; if he used this method, which he should be able to given his intelligence and experience with the MS. Kakashi is just one example mind you.

While this gives some ninja a chance to counter Amaterasu that we didn’t think had a chance before; this does give me a scary thought. If the way people have been countering Amaterasu so far in the series is by following these indicators of when the technique is going to be used then what about when an Uchiha has EMS?

You would think that with EMS an Uchiha might not have to close his eye to use the Jutsu and his eye wouldn’t bleed or become bloodshot; meaning there could be zero warning as to when an Uchiha uses Amaterasu when he has EMS which adds an ambush factor to it making it virtually impossible to counter. If true thats horribly Hax and i can see how Naruto would need the full kyuubi chakra to counter EMS Sasuke.

Edit: I also think the reason why Sasuke couldn’t capture Raikage in Genjutsu is because the pupils of the Sharigan tend to dailate when they use Genjutsu, with his insane reflexes he probably could look away after noticing it before being captured; this of course takes even higher speed/reflexes to counter then Amaterasu, but i think thats the logical explanation their as well; though i haven’t researched it as well as Amaterasu so don’t kill me if i’m wrong.

Lask 10 years ago #1 should it not be possible for all kinds of various expulsion jutsus to counter it as well? Perhaps an explosion from Deidara or a self inflicted rasenshuriken blast. Presumably it would still take edo-level regenerative abilities or a totally protective chakra shroud to survive whatever ground-zero explosion a burning shinobi is placing at their feet.

Seriously, Sasuke burned slow enough to produce a new body, that samurai was perfectly fine after his armor was removed minutes later, and it barely got through Nagato’s clothes during that lengthy conversation. The only problem is having something in between you and the flame before it hits you.

By that same token when talking about jutsu counters, any jutsu that has enough mass to shield your body could directly counter it IF you could produce it between you and the flames path before it his you. It also takes a moment to charge apparently as they always have to close their eyes for a few moments and someone usually has time to call out that’s its going to happen.

It barely did anything to the toad stomach after it instantly burned a big enough hole through it for Kisame and Itachi to escape. The flames just sat there and burned slowly after Itachi left and didn’t care about or was even looking at the toad stomach anymore.

BigandJuicy 10 years ago #9 I’m not ignoring anything, I’m simply using more recent examples that contradict that earlier one from BTS. Kishi has changed alot of things, its not really a huge shocker that he would change how fast the flame burns. We also never actually see Amaterasu burn through that toad stomach, nor do we have a comparison example to tell how durable it is. We simply see the result. If you want to go by old examples fine, but in a manga where retcon is a breakfast side dish, I’ll go with the more recent and numerous examples. Ameterasu burns slow.
