How to Draw a Telescope
Today in this super simple drawing tutorial the team of Drawingforall.net will show you how to draw a telescope. In this drawing instruction, there will be a lot of straight lines, and we hope that you will be able to draw them without difficulty. Of course, you can use the eraser, but to become a real pro artist, try to do without it.
Step 1
Any drawing guide begins with preparatory steps, and the lesson about how to draw a telescope is no exception. So, first of all draw out a long cylinder, this will be the body of our telescope.
Step 2
Draw two curved lines on the body of the telescope, as shown in our example. Of course, telescopes come in all sorts of different kinds, so you can draw other additional lines that will distinguish your telescope drawing from ours.
Step 3
Draw out the focuser and eyepiece at the left side of the telescope. This step seems to be quite complicated, because there are a lot of lines and details, albeit small ones, but if you are careful, you can easily repeat everything you see in front of you.
Step 4
At the top of the telescope draw out the finder scope. This detail also comes in many different styles and sizes, so you can slightly modify the “sight” of the telescope.
Step 5
At the lower part of the telescope draw out the mount. It essentially consists of two simple circles and a cylindrical figure between them.
Step 6
Below the mount draw out a tripod using clear and straight lines. By the way, in our tutorial about how to draw a tripod you can learn to draw it in detail.
Step 7
Now, using hatching add shadows. This will make our telescope drawing more three-dimensional and realistic.
So, in this drawing lesson we showed you how to draw a telescope. Here we applied an unusual technique of drawing – we drew a telescope without the use of guidelines, that is, we immediately drew clear and dark lines. The telescope is an instrument which allows a person to see great distances, even into outer space. The word “telescope” actually means “far-seeing.”
The first telescope was invented in 1608. The scientist and astronomer Galileo Galilei recorded some of the first observations of celestial objects. For the first time ever, people could see mountains on the moon, dark spots on the sun, moons around Jupiter, and the individual stars that made up the Milky Way.
Optical telescopes like the one in this drawing guide can range from small telescopes used in your backyard to massive scientific observatories. Do you have a telescope? Who knows, maybe you can observe a spaceship!

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Telescope
How to Draw a Great Looking Telescope for Kids, Beginners, and Adults – Step 1 1. Begin by sketching the telescope’s objective lens. Draw a pair of straight lines, diverging from one another slightly. Connect them with curved lines on each end. From the narrow end, extend another pair of straight lines, and connect them with a curved line. At the wide end, detail the lens using two curved lines to enclose a partial oval shape.
Easy Telescope Drawing – Step 2 2. Draw the optical tube. Extend a pair of curved lines from the base of the lens. The lines should converge gently. Connect them at the end with a curved line, and band this end of the tube with an additional curved line.
Easy Telescope Drawing – Step 3 3. Draw the mount, erasing as necessary. Use curved and straight lines to sketch a “Y” shape surrounding the telescope tube. Draw curved and straight lines down the “Y” shape to give the mount a three-dimensional appearance.
Easy Telescope Drawing – Step 4 4. Draw the finder scope. Extend a pair of short straight lines from the top of the telescope. Connect them at the top with a straight line. Draw another straight line above the previous, and connect them with a pair of parallel curved lines. Extend straight lines on each side of this shape, and connect them at the end with curved lines. Band the scope with curved lines. Use two curved lines to enclose the shape of the lens at one end.
Easy Telescope Drawing – Step 5 5. Continue the tube by extending a pair of straight lines. Then, enclose a cylinder shape using two straight and two curved lines. Draw a “C” shaped line across the shape. This is the focusing knob. Finish enclosing the tube using a curved line. Then, extend two more straight lines and connect them using a curved line.
Easy Telescope Drawing – Step 6 6. Draw the star diagonal. Enclose a trapezoid at the end of the tube, partially hidden by it. Draw a straight line through it, giving it a three-dimensional appearance. Extend two lines above it and connect them with a curved line; then, extend two more and connect them. Draw a curved line around the end of this shape. This forms the telescope’s eyepiece.
Easy Telescope Drawing – Step 7 7. Continue to draw the mount. Enclose a small cylinder using two curved and two straight lines, erasing as necessary. Draw a “C” shaped line across it. This is the altitude fine adjustment knob. Then, enclose a five-sided shape, partially hidden by the knob. Draw a straight line down its length to give it a three-dimensional shape.
Add More Details to Your Telescope Picture – Step 8 8. Draw the legs of the tripod. For each leg, extend a pair of straight lines and connect them with a curved line; repeat. Use a curved line to enclose the foot of the legs.
Complete the Outline of Your Telescope Drawing – Step 9 9. Draw the remaining tripod leg.

How to Draw A Cartoon Telescope using perfect cylinders
Learning to draw a cartoon telescope is an easy task if you are able to sketch great rectangles and cylinders. In this lesson, I will show you how to assemble a few basic shapes to create a cool telescope in just a few minutes.
The universe is fascinating. There is nothing more thrilling than looking at stars in the sky at night with a telescope. With billions of potential planets to observe, this is a cool hobby that does require patience and dedication. Our comprehension of our world wouldn’t be as accurate without the help of this precious instrument.
You can start with the video tutorial below to get familiar with this object before proceeding with the written version. Ready? Let’s see what the universe has to offer.
let’s start with a basic cylinder
We can start this basic lesson with the creation of the telescope tube using a cylinder. This one is displayed from a particular angle. Indeed, the shape is not quite horizontal. We also need to see the tip of the object (as shown on the left of the illustration). Once this shape is done, we can proceed with the second step.
Adding two more rectangles to form the main part
This cartoon telescope is not made from one cylinder, but rather three similar parts. Make sure all these new elements are perfectly aligned with the original shape. Notice how the last one on the right of the illustration is much smaller than the two others.
creating more parts using smaller shapes
Below the cylinder located in the middle of the object, you can draw the mount using small rectangles and circles. Make sure that the last rectangle in the bottom is horizontal. Nice work. This object is progressing nicely.
building the tripod of the cartoon telescope
It’s time to put this massive object on a basic tripod made from thin rectangles. Below the mount, you can draw three long rectangles as shown below. Smaller rectangles are inserted in all three original shapes. Small feet made from simple circles are added on the ground. A simple pattern is added on the main cylinder.
adding basic colors to the object
This cartoon telescope is filled with simple gray colors. The lens can be colored in blue. The feet and the pattern can be black. This object is nice, but we can make it better by adding gradients to this illustration.
going one step further with the addition of a simple effect
Gradients can be applied to create more depth and volume easily. If you don’t have access to a vector application, then you can achieve this effect manually too. Notice how the cylinders now have a 3D aspect. The lens is also visually more appealing.
Good work! I hope you had fun learning to draw this simple telescope using all steps found above. You can now try more cute lessons related to astronomy below. It’s time to explore more planets, more galaxies and create things that are literally out of this world! Enjoy! 🙂
