Cosplay Photography Editing: Tips & Tools

If you take interior photos, keep in mind that artificial light is hardly suitable for a pro-level photoshoot. Make sure to avoid it especially if you need to take photos during various events.

When shooting photos, it’s better to use natural light that looks especially beautiful in the afternoon and during the golden hour. This is the last hour before sunset and the first hour after sunrise. To create a moody atmosphere, try taking photos during the blue hour. It starts 20–30 minutes after sunset and before sunrise.

When taking cosplay photos, use a creative approach. For instance, you may use various lighting techniques to give your images a more eye-catching look. Some photographers use light flares or overexpose their photos to give them a softer look, or use harsh light to emphasize textures.

Besides, you may use a shoot-through umbrella to ensure that your subject is well lit. Thanks to this accessory, you can even emphasize the background using soft light that doesn’t produce harsh shadows. Photographers also use the strip softbox when they need to illuminate a specific part of the frame or emphasize the main subject.

Tools for Cosplay Photo Editing

In this day and age, where self-image means everything, cosplay is no different. Compared to its humble beginnings decades ago, technological advances have made it possible to bring our favorite fictional characters to life.

Lighting, photo quality, angles, posing, and execution are taken into consideration. The costume, wig, props, accessories, and makeup are also factors. Whether it’s re-enacting a scene, focusing deeply on your character’s motifs and aesthetics, or you just want to enhance your cosplay to the best it can be, and all of these things aren’t enough… that is where photo editing and manipulation come into play.

Normally, when you hear about photo editing and manipulation, the first thing that would come into mind is Photoshop or any of the Adobe programs such as Illustrator. While it’s true that I do use Photoshop to enhance my cosplay photos, it is not the only program I use. I tend to use more than one program for editing when I’m in the mood for meticulous perfectionism.

In this article, we will focus on what photo editing programs can be used on your smartphone. As I am an Android phone user, I will be referring to the apps I’ve downloaded from the Google Play Store.

However, let me throw in a disclaimer: you don’t have to use the apps I’m recommending here. I’d say go explore in the app store, choose the editing apps you want (make sure to check out the reviews too!), and see how it’ll work out for you.

Without further ado…

Meitu

Meitu was one of the first photo editing apps I’ve downloaded. I still use it occasionally. I mainly use it to help with lighting (you can either adjust the lighting manually or have it be done automatically), to bring certain special effects in the photo, and even has the ability to let you add text in different fonts and formats. Sometimes, I do use its filters too, in order to help certain things stand out. It has a variety of stuff to choose from, depending on what you what you want to do.

Initially, I had used this to help my skin or makeup look better in photos. But I feel there’s a limit to it if you keep layering filters and such; otherwise, it’ll show in the photo that it was obviously edited. In my case, I know that the photo quality gets compromised once I see my eyebrows and nose look blurry after a certain point in editing (which is why I end up getting picky until I found some apps that don’t have this problem). Keep in mind that I don’t turn on the beauty cam feature on my phone camera if I shoot for cosplay selfies, so make sure to turn that off (or not go all the way to maximum effect) before you start shooting and editing.

However, I do encourage you to use the beauty editing function in Meitu. It does help get rid of pimples (and dark spots), wrinkles, dark circles, and eye bags.

Toolwiz Photos Pro Editor

This app, in my opinion, is the equivalent of Photoshop on your phone. It’s actually handy for me when I don’t have immediate access to my laptop.

Like Photoshop, it has useful features such as Patch (which acts like the Clone Stamp tool in this app), Healing, Blending Mixture, and others. My favorite feature here would have to be Resize because that helps me get the exact size I want when I upload photos on Instagram, so the whole photo doesn’t get cropped (which is a problem for most people when they submit through the Instagram app).

Another favorite feature I like in this app are the collages. You get different designs and different formats, so you get to pick and choose how you see fit if you have multiple photos from cosplay photo shoots.

I’d recommend this for cosplay photos that are not selfies since a lot of photo editing apps tend to focus on selfies. So, some things can look off or flawed in other apps (like, for example, if you want to change your eye or hair color and it looks awry because it’s at a different angle).

Airbrush

This is the app I use when it comes to touching up on my skin and makeup, especially if my makeup looks worn down in photos of certain lighting. It manages to erase my flaws without compromising the photo quality, so I can stop fussing about how my eyebrows and nose looked like they disappeared.

While it does have filters and certain makeup looks, I don’t use them. There are other apps I use for makeup and overall appearance enhancement, so I’ll get to those in a bit.

NiceEyes

If you can’t afford contacts or don’t want to wear them for cosplay, this is the app for you! This app has different eye colors under the rainbow and beyond (you can even get rainbow colored eyes too!) as well as different pupil shapes and how light enters the eyes. You can even choose how much you want to cover your real eye color as well as resize the eyes. You can choose to color either individual eye or both. You can also give yourself heterochromia eyes.

They also have special effect eyes such as Sharingan (in all forms), Byakugan, and Rinnegan from Naruto. They also have Lelouch’s Geass eye from Code Geass. Sadly, there’s not a lot of variety in the special effects library and I feel there should be more since a lot of fictional characters have a special eye.

A few examples…

Lucina’s Brand of the Exalt from Fire Emblem: Awakening.

Allen Walker’s Cursed Eye from D.Gray-Man.

Ciel Phantomhive’s Faustian Contract Eye from Black Butler.

Another nitpick I have is while I did say you can choose to color one eye individually, the other one that’s not chosen is automatically colored. This serves as a problem because if you have only one eye open (when you’re winking or wincing) or you’re posing at an angle where only one eye is showing, the unedited eye that is unseen will obviously show an edit of the eye color.

For such cases, it’s why I go to Photoshop to do eye color changing. I’ve yet to see if I can achieve this on Toolwiz, so I’ll be testing that.

And while the developers say we can e-mail them if we want to add other eye colors/effects, unfortunately, they don’t respond. I’ve e-mailed them about adding Lucina’s Brand of the Exalt Eye some time ago and I never got an answer from them.

See what a huge difference photo editing and manipulation makes!

Anyone can do it, you just need to practice and have patience as well as perseverance. If you want to stand out from other cosplayers, these are only a few things you can do!

If I do have any more apps to add, I’ll go back and edit this article.

I hope this helps you all!

5 tips to edit your cosplay pictures with Photoshop when you are a beginner

5 tips to edit your cosplay pictures with Photoshop when you are a beginner

Is Photoshop really that hard to use ?

I am not going to lie : you can do very complex things with Photoshop. There are so many options and tools, that sometimes it can be overwhelming. There are many tutorials out there but some of you might still feel lost. The aim of this article is to give you some tips on how to edit your pictures with simple tricks. In just 15 minutes, you can make a blah picture look professional and much more nicer.

Tip 1 : beauty retouching

You look beautiful no matter what, with or without makeup, but maybe there are some details (dark circles, pimples..) that you would prefer to erase. You don’t have to be ashamed if you want to edit those details

How to erase bags under your eyes without looking like your face is made from plastic

My tip is to never erase them completely. Your face has a shape, and very often your under eye area is a bit more hollow than your cheeks. So it is NORMAL to have a small shadow in that place. What we want to erase is any weird shadow that would have been created by a bad lightning, or blueish marks that your concealer couldn’t conceal.

Duplicate your main layer by dragging it to the copy icon

Choose the PATCH TOOL in Photoshop

Select the area Drag the area you want to modify towards an area that is light/smooth Voila !

Change the opacity of the layer (around 50%) to create a more natural look. Then you can merge your layers with CTRL + E (if you want to keep your original layer, make sure to create another copy first)

This method works also for shadows around your nose, mouth, chin etc …

Spots, scars and others

If you have a spot, a scar or a mole that you want to remove, it is actually very easy ! We are using the same technic, but this time we will leave the second layer with a full opacity at 100%

Select the PATCH TOOL

Select the area Drag the patch to a smooth area And voilà !

Before / after

Tip 2 : make your eyes sharper

Very often, the camera doesn’t focus on the eye but rather on the tip of your nose, or your bangs. It’s very annoying and it makes the whole picture look kinda blurry. And it’s even more annoying when it is THE picture where you make the perfect pose.

If the picture isn’t too blurry, you can fix it by making your eyes look sharper.

Create a copy of your main layer

Apply sharpening filters on your new layer

Filter > SHARPEN > SHARPEN

Adjust the filter so your photo look good but not too sharp either

Do another one : Filter > SHARPEN > SMART SHARPEN

Adjust the filter so your photo look good but not too sharp either

Now, we don’t want the picture to be sharp everywhere.

Select the layer you have been working on

Go in the menu Layers > New LAYER MASK > HIDE ALL

Your layer will « disapear » and a black layer mask will appear next to your picture thumbnail in the list of layers (see screenshot). Make sure you click on the layer mask to select it.

Select the brush and white paint

And paint where you want your « sharp » layer to appear again : on the eyes (make sure you are on the layer mask, and not your picture. If you see white paint on your picture, you haven’t selected the black layer mask). You can see white little bits appear on the layer mask.

If you make a mistake, you can just use black paint to make the layer dispapear again

CTRL + E to merge your layers : you know have one layer

Copy your main layer again

We will use Color Burn and Color Dodge to make the eyes more shiny

Select the tool COLOR DODGE and set it for LIGHT TONES and EXPOSURE around 25%

Use the tool to lighten the eye iris. Don’t do it too much or it will look weird. You can also use it on the white reflection inside your pupil

Use the COLOR BURN tool to darken your pupil and your make up/lashes

Tip 3 : make sure your composition is showing your cosplay to advantage

On a picture, you can have a great pose / expression, but if the composition isn’t good, it can spoils everything.

I’m not saying that you should follow strict rules, sometimes a little bit of fantasy can be good, but when you look at your picture, ask yourself if it looks professional. You can look at ads or other photographer works to see how they usually frame their picture.

There are tons on information about composition on internet, it can give you some inspiration for your own pictures ! (for example here)

Tip 4 : fix the light

Finding the right lightning is very hard. If you took your picture inside and doesn’t have professional lightning, your picture might be all yellowy and dark. If you took your picture outside, it might be too bright. There are easy way to fix those problems and they will make your picture look so much better!

Correct the white balance

When you correct the white balance, you want white stuff to look… white. Pictures taken with artificial lights inside will often look yellow. If this is what happened to you, don’t worry, you can correct this easily.

Create a blue layer with the blend mode « overlay » with an opacity between 10 and 20%

You can also play with a color balance layer (layer > adjustement layer > color balance) and adding more cyan and blue in the highlights tones balance

Correct the darkness/brightness

You can adjust the darkness or brightness of your pictures with the level adjustement layer (layer > adjustement layer > levels) in photoshop. It’s a simple trick but most of the time, adding more light will make you picture look SO MUCH better.

Tip 5 : play a little bit with the colors

Cosplay is all about making people dream and making them believe you are the character you embody. So when you take pictures, you might want them to look a little bit more … dramatic.

You can use the color balance layer (layer > adjustement layer > color balance) to enhance some colors in the highlights or the dark tones.

You can use the selective color layer (layer > adjustement layer > selective color) to modify a specific range of tones : reds, yellows, greens..

There are so many things to do with colors that this might require its own article. You should play with the adjustement layers until you find something you like!

And don’t forget to have fun!
