How To Remove Beans From Bean Bags

Bean bags can be an incredibly fun and functional piece of furniture. Yet, a lot of the time, people may think that they are more casual and fun than anything else. When looking to buy bean bags with beans, it’s important to make sure that you have made the right decision. It’s safe to say that you’ll have a lot of set needs when you’re looking for seating. So you’ll want to make sure that you are able to make the best choice. And to do that, you need all the facts.

If you’ve never bought or owned a bean bag before, you may want to ensure that you’re making the best decision. And that means knowing as much as you can about this style of seating. You may have many questions, such as how comfortable is the seating, where you can put them, and how you remove the beans. And that’s very normal. So to help you understand more about bean bags and whether they are right for you, we’re going to detail everything here for you now.

What Are Bean Bags With Beans?

First of all, you might want to make sure that you know exactly what bean bags are. You may or may not be aware that bean bags are a style of seating. You may think that they are casual furniture pieces that you can place throughout the house. But they can be formal seating – especially if you have a different style.

Essentially, bean bags with beans are chairs. They’re often used as extra seating options or for something casual and relaxing in a living space or bedroom. Whether you want a relaxing chair to read in or to add something comfortable and cozy to a child’s bedroom, you can do that with a bean bag chair. However, before you decide to go ahead and buy, you may have questions or want to know a bit more about them.

After all, if you’re going to invest in a piece of furniture for your home, you’ll want to know that it’s right for you. That might mean that you want to understand the benefits of bean bags or how you can get one of your own. You may even want to know how you can style it and then also, how you are able to remove the beans from the bag too. So let’s get started.

What Makes Them Great?

Maybe you’re not sold on why you, or whether you actually do, need a bean bag. So it helps to understand the benefits and what makes them great. There are many positives to a bean bag chair. And if right now you’re feeling that they’re not for you, you’ll be glad to know that they make perfect chairs.

Whether you’re searching for seating for the outside or something for your living space, bean bags can be perfect choices. As a great alternative to traditional seating that can be uncomfortable and ridged, bean bag chairs are incredibly comfortable. There’s nothing like relaxing on one while reading or watching a movie. They’re also very versatile and can be moved from room to room should you wish to enjoy the comfort all around the house.

Why Buy A Bean Bag?

Now, you know a little more about why they’re so great, and now you need to understand what makes them so essential around the home. There really is such a wide range of ways that you can benefit from buying a bean bag chair – or several. They look fantastic around the home, and that’s always a huge selling point for people. They are great when you want to add a level of comfort or character into a space. Maybe in a den or bedroom.

Next up, you’re going to want to appreciate the comfort that you can get from a bean bag chair. Sometimes, you need to have extra seating – particularly for special occasions. But you don’t always want to have formal seating stored around the house. Maybe you don’t have the room. But if you have bean bags elsewhere in the house, you can then bring them into a space and voila, you have extra seating that’s incredibly comfortable.

Finally, you’re going to have to admit that bean bags do look extra cool too. They add a certain funky or relaxed or boho vibe to space. So when you want to create an area of calm, they’re great to go with.

Where To Put Your Bean Bag

The next thing that you might be thinking is where you’re going to actually put your bean bag. Whether you’ve just moved into a new house and you need to decorate every single space or you’re trying to get a better understanding of the versatility of bean bags with beans, you’ll learn a lot in this section.

First of all, you’ll be glad to know that you can style your bean bag in just about any location in the house and it can look fantastic. Adding a bean bag to your entryway can give an instant calming look to your house the second you walk in. Likewise, choosing to place a bean bag in your kitchen can make it feel more relaxed and give you someplace to rest between cooking.

Now, let’s run through some of the most popular locations around the house.

Living Area

To begin with, you’ve always got the living space to work with. Bean bags are very comfortable chairs and they’re perfect to lounge around in watching TV or reading. So, it makes sense for you to pick one out to style within your living space. You could even pick out a whole set for a snug room that you want to have very calm and casual vibes.

Bedroom

Next up we have the bedroom. Now, this could be your master suite, or it could be guest bedrooms. Either way, bean bags look great in the bedroom. Sometimes you just want a casual chair to fit inside the room. Something to rest at or store things on. And bean bag chairs can be a perfect casual alternative to anything structured.

Kids’ Room

Kids love bean bag chairs. But what they love more is chairs available in their size. Maybe you don’t want to have to go with a boring and basic looking plastic table and chairs set or you want to make sure that you can get something that is the right size for them? Then it’s safe to say that opting for a children’s sized bean bag chair is just perfect.

Pet’s Room

Do your pets have their own room? Or maybe they sleep in the living space, kitchen, or your room? Either way, they need a bed, don’t they? Why not opt for a bean bag dog bed? Yes, that’s right, you can also get a dogs bed made out of beans that they can sleep on. Whether they have their own room or not, this can look super stylish anywhere around the house.

Outside

Finally, you can also put your bean bag furniture outside. Yes, you heard that correctly. Bean bag collections are made for the outside as well as your interiors. Whether you want chairs to style on the patio, to lounge on in the garden, or anywhere else, there are bean bags to suit your needs. And not only that, but you can also take the bean bags to the pool too – as we have specific style models that were made to float in the pool!

How To Style Your Bean Bags With Beans

Now, maybe you’re wondering just how you would style a bean bag chair if you were to get one? When you’ve only ever had traditional more structured furniture, it may feel like a huge change to then deal with something more casual and cozy. However, many of the key interior design principles that you know and love still apply. And you’ll be glad to know that styling your bean bags is a lot easier than you think.

You’ll always want to think about the style of the space and what kind of bag is going to work best in it. Do you want to work with a traditional bean bag chair that is shaped like an armchair? Or maybe you want more of a lounge that can be relaxing? After you’ve thought about the style, you’ll want to consider the right size for the space so that it fits comfortably but isn’t too overbearing. You’ll then want to pick from one of the many gorgeous colours to ensure that your bean bag suits the space and really compliments your décor and design scheme.

How To Remove The Beans

Now, one of the biggest questions that bean bag owners and potential buyers can have, is how you are able to remove the beans. Maybe you want to clean the bean bag or store it away? Then you’ll find that you might need to remove the beans. When purchasing bean bags with beans, it’s important to know how the beans are put inside and how they can be removed too. So let’s run over that now.

This is a job that you’ll want to do with another person as it can be a little tricky to do alone. This is also something that you should do away from any children or pets as they could pick up the beans and ingest them. A final note before beginning is to make sure that you are away from things like fans or air conditioning units that can cause these lightweight beans to roll away.

Start by cleaning the indoor surface that you’re working on – hoovering up any dirt.

Make sure that you have a plastic bag to pour the beans into and a funnel. If you don’t have a funnel, you can make one out of cardboard or something like a plastic bottle.

To empty the beans, you’ll need to take the plastic bag (that is big enough to house all of the beans – ideally double the size of the inner bag), and tape it to the funnel.

Then you need to open the bean bag cover by using a paper clip to undo the safety zipper.

Next place the other end of the funnel inside of the inner liner bag, tightening the zipper around the funnel.

Now that the funnel is secure and tight, you can safely and slowly empty the beans out of the bag.

After this process is finished, you are free to clean the bag, move it, store it, or whatever you want to do, and then reverse the process to fill it back up again.

How To Buy A Bean Bag

How to Pick Up Bean Bag Beans

Anyone that has an accidental spillage of bean bag beans knows just how these seemingly harmless pieces of polystyrene can get into every nook and cranny around the house. Since bean bags have made their way into our lives to aid our relaxation or to add a little bit more comfort to our rooms, there’s been the small matter of accidental spilling of bean bag beans.

Whether you have a toddler who’s opened the zip to see the wonders inside or it caught on something which resulted in a significant snowstorm of bean bag beans. Learning how to pick up bean bag beans is a fine art. What is the approach to picking up bean bag beans without making a significant mess to your living space?

Preparing your space for a bean bag beans pick up operation

It can be quite an operation to get your wayward bean bag beans picked up as easily as possible. The great news is that it’s not as difficult as you think. There are a few tried and tested tips that you can use to your advantage. But what you need to do first is to make sure that the space with the spillage is as contained as possible.

Ensuring your space is clear is priority number one. And while it may not be so straightforward to pick up every single bean bag bean, especially if it’s been some time, you should take the following into account.

> When was the last time you cleaned the room?

> Have the windows been open a lot recently?

> What type of flooring is in the room (carpet or laminate flooring)?

> How much traffic is in that room? (For example, if it’s a spare room and you are looking to renovate the space the beans can stay contained in one area.)

The most important thing to make sure that your space is ready for bean bag cleaning is to close all of the windows and doors. The slightest breeze will cause a flurry of bean bag beans to go everywhere, and this only serves to make your clean up operation longer and more frustrating.

Luckily, there are a few different options so let’s break them down.

Using a dustpan and brush

Using a dustpan and brush is the easiest method. Before you grab a dustpan and brush or a broom, you need to get rid of the static. When the beans have a significant amount of static on them, it stops you from directing the beans on to the dustpan. You need to make sure that you get rid of the static before you attempt any cleanup operation. You can do this with a handful of methods.

1. Spraying anti-static spray over the beans is the easiest option. You can purchase anti-static spray from supermarkets. You only need to give the beans a quick spray, and you can scoop them up into the dustpan.

2. Using bicarb soda. If you’re not able to find anti-static spray, this cupboard staple is a perfect option. You don’t need to use much. A little sprinkling will help to neutralise the static.

3. Using water. You don’t need to douse the beans in water. The most important thing to remember is that you spray the water as finely as possible. Get yourself a sprayer and sprinkle the water over the beans to get rid of the static.

Once you’ve neutralised the static, you can sweep the beans on to the dustpan with the brush or broom. If you don’t have a brush, you can use a large piece of cardboard. Using cardboard can work to your advantage because smaller brooms can move the air in various directions meaning that your beans might blow everywhere.

Make sure your movements are slow when sweeping the beans into the dustpan. You need to minimise the breeze. If you are in a hurry and work with rapid sweeping motions, you will cause more problems for yourself. Keep it slow and very steady.

Using static to your advantage

You can use static to get the beans on to a dustpan, as long as you do it properly. Because static is a magnet of sorts, this can work wonders if you’re struggling to get the beans on to a dustpan. While static can be incredibly annoying one of the best things you can do to use static in your favour is to get a balloon.

1. Grab a balloon (the bigger, the better).

2. Rub your hands over the balloon to create static.

3. Hold the balloon over the dustpan. The static you have made will bring the beans on to the pan.

Static can lose its potency. So if you are using this method, you may have to top up the static on the balloon by giving it another rub. As a way of attracting the little beans that have disappeared from your sight after a major cleanup operation, this can work wonders.

Using a lint roller to pick up bean bag beans

There are, of course, other methods to pick up bean bag beans. Using a lint roller isn’t a great way to remove annoying little bits of materials from your clothing. Taking this approach and using them to pull up small bean bag beans can work if there’s only a handful to grab.

Make sure that when you are are using the lint roller to apply slow movements. When we remove material from our clothing, the temptation can be to do it quickly. Taking it slow and steady will guarantee you pick up more beans from the floor. If you do it too fast, you could roll over them.

There are numerous types of lint rollers out there. You need to use the sticky ones. These will guarantee you get as many bean bag beans as possible when going over the floor.

Making a sticky tape system

It’s also possible to make your version of a lint roller. If you don’t have access to a lint roller, you can use good old fashioned “painters tape.” This type of tape goes over windows and skirting boards, and is ideal because it’s not as strong as duct tape. Using duct tape on carpets or wooden floors you can pull up the polish or materials. If you use “painters tape” this is strong enough to pick up the beans.

It is your choice on how you want to use the tape. The most effective approach is to take one line of tape and roll it into a big ball. The bigger the ball, the more bean bag beans you will get from the floor. Start rolling the ball over the area, making sure that you press down slightly to pick up everything in your path.

Can’t we use a vacuum cleaner?

Most people would automatically think about grabbing the vacuum cleaner for this particular problem. While it can get the job done very quickly, unfortunately, it’s not so straightforward.

Firstly, static can cause issues. As the beans can stick to the outside of the vacuum, this can clog your vacuum cleaner quickly. You can get rid of the static using the points mentioned above, or you can apply a dryer sheet to the offending area.

As vacuum cleaners only have a small bag to collect dirt the beans can fill up the vacuum cleaner very quickly so you will keep going back and forth to the bin to empty the bag before starting again. Having to empty the vacuum cleaner frequently can add a significant amount of time to your cleaning operation. The way to fix this would be to prevent the beans from going into the vacuum. By putting a stocking over the vacuum nozzle, you can keep the beans in one place while you can brush the beans into a bucket. If you want to get rid of the static at this point, you can use anti-static spray or baking soda over the end piece.

If you have a vacuum with a large bag, it is possible to clean everything up quickly. Still, you must remember that because these little critters can get caught in so many different parts of the vacuum nozzle as soon as you turn the vacuum off a few beans may come back out again.

Picking up bean bag beans

Looking after your bean bag is essential. But picking up stray bean bag beans from the floor can prove to be very frustrating. But as long as you go into it with the right mindset and keep yourself organised it won’t be so difficult. As long as you focus on minimising the static, reducing airflow in the room, and focus on slow movements, you will be able to collect the beans.

How to Stop Bean Bags from Going Flat

A high-quality bean bag is designed to be almost indestructible, and, if cared for properly, can last you a lifetime. It’s filling, however, is not. After a while of prolonged use, your bean bag may begin to look flat and feel less comfortable, and this may you leave you wondering, “How do I stop my bean bag from going flat?”.

To stop your bean bag from going flat, you should be following a simple method known as “fluffing” your bean bag. If you perform this procedure to your bean bag on a regular basis, even while it’s still in perfect condition, you may be able to prevent it from going flat.

If you’ve left it a little too late, and your bean bag is already feeling and looking flat, you can try the fluffing method to see if you can revive the filling in your bean bag – if you’re lucky, this may just work. However, at times, it may be a little too late and you may instead need to fix your bean bag by replacing the filling.

In today’s article I will teach you all about how and when to fluff your bean bag, how to know if this procedure has revitalised your bean bag, and how to know when it’s time to replace your filling instead.

So, are you ready to learn all about how to take good care of your bean bag by fluffing, refilling and fixing? If so, read on.

Why Do Bean Bags Go Flat?

I must first give you some insight as to just exactly the reason behind the question, “Why do bean bags go flat?”. You see, the filling of bean bags tends to be made from what is known as expanded polystyrene (EPS) beans, which is a material that is very closely related to Styrofoam.

EPS beans are 98% air. This means these beans have multiple pockets of air inside them, as this makes them more comfortable to sit on. However it also means that they will greatly reduce in size after many uses as the air squishes out of them.

Issues begin to arise after you have sat on them for extensive periods of time as the air pockets get emptied, which reduces the size of the beans and they become compressed. This problem with compression not only gives your bean bag a flat appearance, but also leads to issues with its comfort and ergonomics (that is, its assistance with your productivity).

4 Steps to Stop Bean Bags From Going Flat

If you have a bean bag chair that has gone flat on you, the first thing you can do is attempt to rejuvenate it by “fluffing” it. It’s quite a simple process – just follow the below 4 Simple Steps on How to “Fluff” Your Bean Bag

1. Unzip your bean bag – Open the childproof cover of your beanbag to expose its inner core. Please do this in a safe environment, away from pets or animals – if the bean filling is exposed to kids or animals, they can be injured or suffocated from ingesting or inhaling the filling.

Your bean bag may have a secondary lining, known as your inner liner. If so, you can simply remove this as all your EPS beans will be contained inside the inner liner. However, if the filling is loose, empty it out carefully into a bin bag, trying not to let any of it escape as you do.

(A little tip – whilst you have the beans out, this would also be a good time to do a little maintenance on your bean bag cover by cleaning it as per your covers instructions).

2. Fluff your bean bag – Once you have your bean bag open, hold it so the opening is facing upwards. If you have removed the filling and put it into a bin bag, place it back into the bean bag. Otherwise, simply shake the bean bag for 2 – 5 minutes.

This activation will refill the air pockets in the beans and allow them to regain their original shape.

3. Check for fluffiness – Close the bean bag chair and evaluate its appearance to see if it still looks flat. Also, try sitting in it to see if it provides you with the satisfactory support you require. If not, reopen it and try fluffing it (Step #2) again.

Please note – if your bean bag does not regain its original shape after a second fluffing, unfortunately the filling is beyond the point of rejuvenation and it is time to refill your bean bag – another procedure which I’ll elaborate on further below (just see the section “How Do I Refill a Flat Bean Bag Chair”).

4. Replace the cover – Put the filling back in the shell of the bean bag just like your found it (that is, either in the inner liner or loose). Zip your bean bag back up, sit down and relax – your job here is done!

This method should be something you do on a regular basis, such as every 2-3 months, even if your bean bag is still looking good.

By fluffing your bean bag every time you give it a clean, you can prevent it from going flat and keep it looking like new.

However, if it’s too late and you bean bag has already gone flat, follow the fluffing method to try and repair the damage that has been done. Under many circumstances, the stimulation may revive the air pockets in your filler and make your bean bag look and feel brand new again.

Unfortunately, bean bag filling is only designed to last so long (generally less than 5 years for the standard EPS beans) so fluffing your bean bag will not always work. If this is the case, it means your bean bag requires new refilling.

How Do I Refill a Flat Bean Bag Chair?

Unfortunately, there comes a time when the only way you can completely fix your bean bag after it goes flat is by doing a complete refill. Refilling a bean bag means replacing the filling in your bean bag with new filling – generally the expanded polystyrene (EPS) beans.

As mentioned, EPS is typically the chosen filling for most bean bag chairs as their main benefits are that:

• They are lightweight, so your bean bag remains versatile.

• They are rigid enough to keep their shape for roughly 5 years.

• They are unaffected by both moisture and heat.

Although EPS beans are not biodegradable, they can be reused and recycled in several ways, including being sold, donated to regional recycling centres, used for craft projects or as a soil filler in the base of pot plants. When you need to refill your bean bag, I recommended that you use virgin (that is, brand new) beads rather than recycled beads, as recycled beads may have a shorter lifetime.

Refilling a bean bag is thought by many to be a messy, time-consuming and complicated process. However, if you follow our 7 Simple Steps for Filling a Bean Bag, it can be quite easy, straightforward, and even fun.

Conclusion

If you purchase a high-quality bean bag, such as the one at Bliss Bean Bags, it may come with a Lifetime Warranty which covers everything from our workmanship to our zippers and our thread. That is because high-quality bean bags such as ours are extremely durable and designed to last. However, one thing that warranty for a bean bag will not cover is the filling inside them.

The filling of bean bags tends to be made from what is known as expanded polystyrene (EPS) beans. These have multiple pockets of air inside them, making them more comfortable to sit on. However, after time, the air pockets get emptied, leading to compression problems and giving your bean bag both a flat appearance and feeling.

To prevent your bean bag from going flat, you should perform the “fluffing” procedure on your bean bag on a regular basis, even while it’s still in perfect condition. This involves unzipping your bean bag and shaking it to reactivate the air pockets in the beans.

This method can also be performed on a bean bag that has already gone flat in an attempt to revitalise it, and if you’re lucky, it just may work.

However, there does comes a time when the only way you can repair a flat bean bag is by completely replacing all the beans with new ones. If you follow our recommendations in this article, you’ll know how to refill a bean bag, where to buy your bean bag filling, and alternative, DIY options for bean bag filling as well.

So if you are ready to take good care of a bean bag, fluff it regularly and not have any issues with refilling it, start designing yours at Bliss Bean Bags today!
