How To Enable QoS On Your Xfinity Router: Complete Guide

RobotPoweredHome is reader-supported. When you buy through links on my blog, I may earn an affiliate commission. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

When I signed up for Xfinity, the representative told me that the router they were going to give me had QoS and a few other features to help me better control my network.

I usually download movies that I want to watch on Netflix rather than stream them, so I put the movie I want to watch to download on Netflix while I go about the day.

This seemed to be a bad idea because whenever I wanted to play a multiplayer game on my PS5, the game would lag a lot and not respond to my commands.

That’s when I realized I could use QoS to limit the bandwidth my computer was downloading the movie from Netflix while gaming on my PS5.

I decided to find out how to do this and if QoS could do what I was hoping it could.

I hopped on the internet and visited Xfinity’s support pages to see how QoS works and if it was possible to turn it on.

I also learnt about how QoS systems work by reading a few technical articles from router manufacturers.

I was able to make this guide with the information that I gathered so that you’ll also know what QoS does and if you can enable it on your Xfinity router in seconds.

Xfinity gateways do not allow you to turn on QoS them. However, if you use your own router, you can turn on QoS on it, which you can find out how to by referring to the manual of your router.

Read on to find out what exactly QoS is and why turning it on has more benefits than you thought it would.

What Is QoS?

QoS or Quality of Service is a general term for a set of technologies or methods that a router or any network system uses to control the traffic through it.

It makes sure that the limited bandwidth that a network can get is being utilized most efficiently so that all applications or devices on the network work correctly.

QoS is typically turned on of your network sees a lot of traffic, like IP television, gaming, streaming movies and shows, and Voice over IP.

With QoS systems, you can see how each device or application on the network performs pretty accurately.

As the name suggests, this system aims to provide the best possible experience on the network to you, who will be using the network.

How Does QoS Work?

A QoS system coordinates with its different subsystems and arranges the different types of traffic that go through your router into channels or queues.

These queues are then given to each device or application on the network, and their priority is assigned there.

You will be setting the priority order when you go to turn on QoS from the router settings.

When you set up QoS, you reserve bandwidth for your applications or device, thereby limiting them or letting them loose bandwidth-wise depending on what you need.

Why Should You Enable QoS

With the advent of remote work and learning, video conferencing apps like Zoom, Cisco Webex, and Google Meet have become more important in our daily lives.

2020 saw a massive rise in content being consumed from streaming services like Netflix, which is only set to grow as the years go on.

Besides the growing popularity and accessibility of gaming, internet usage is only set to climb higher.

So having something convenient that manages the traffic on your router is pretty good to have.

Turning QoS on can let you manage your network’s growing data and bandwidth needs while keeping the experience as smooth as possible.

QoS also finds itself right in the middle of the smart home revolution, and using a system like this can make sure that your smart home is responsive and snappy.

How To Turn On QoS On Your Xfinity Router

Even though QoS is a great feature, unfortunately, you cannot enable QoS on a gateway that you get from Xfinity.

Xfinity gateway manages QoS on their own, and you cannot set your own custom rules.

If you use your own router, however, it is possible to turn QoS on.

Refer to your router’s manual to see how to enable QoS and prioritize devices and applications.

You’ll need to create rules that set the priorities for each device from the QoS panel.

After creating the rules, save them and see if the rules get enforced by testing them out.

How To Use QoS As A Parental Control Feature

QoS can also be used as a Parental Control tool if your router doesn’t have dedicated Parental Control features.

Set a rule that restricts the bandwidth that your kid’s devices can use, and turn those rules on when you want them off their devices.

Most routers have an app with which you can do all of this, but you cannot do this with Xfinity gateways.

But Xfinity gateways have an excellent set of Parental Control features, and you’re better off using that instead of QoS.

Final Thoughts

Even if Xfinity does not let you turn on QoS on their gateway, you can still do it if you use your own router.

You can also do this on the second router if you have your Xfinity gateway extended to it.

You can connect your own router to Xfinity’s router by turning Bridge mode on the Xfinity router and using an ethernet cable to connect the two routers together.

If you are having issues getting internet while in Bridge mode with an Xfinity router, try disabling and enabling Bridge mode again on the Xfinity router.

How To Enable QoS On Your Xfinity Router (6 Steps)

With Wi-Fi becoming ever more important to our daily lives, internet service providers are widening their capabilities to meet this extra demand. And right now, in addition to providing the fastest hotspot services, Xfinity has introduced QoS.

Xfinity routers now allow you to customize the multimedia capabilities you have running on your in-home Wi-Fi network through the process they call ‘Quality of Service’ or QoS.

QoS users can prioritize one service over another, so, for example, you could prioritize Skype over Netflix by assigning the highest priority to Skype.

Here, we look at what QoS is and how it works to help you decide whether it’s the right choice for your home Wi-Fi.

If you’ve ever wanted to know about QoS, or if you’ve read this far and you’re intrigued by it – read on.

What Is QoS?

QoS stands for Quality Of Service. This service technology lets you manage the data traffic, network latency, and jittering on your in-home network to provide improved internet potential.

QoS technology is responsible for controlling and managing the network resources by prescribing priorities for specific types of network data on a particular network to help the users enjoy their favorite browsing.

Should I Enable QoS?

Many Xfinity users are perfectly fine with their standard internet speed provided.

But for those who want maximum internet speed, enabling Dynamic QoS technology on their routers could be the answer.

If your current speeds are 250 Mbps or fewer and you find uploading or downloading quite slow and frustrating, QoS could be for you.

If, however, you enjoy the benefits of 300 Mbps or more, QoS is probably not necessary.

How Does QoS Technology Work?

Quality of Service or a QoS is a tremendous suite of tremendous technology for managing bandwidth usage while data is crossing between computer networks.

Its most common use is to protect real-time and high-priority data applications. QoS provides the ultimate bandwidth reservation as well as the ability to prioritize network traffic upon its entering or leaving on a network device.

QoS On Your Xfinity Router

Your router’s configuration allows you to apply QoS technology to your Xfinity router.

If you are an Xfinity user, but you find that you’re not entirely satisfied with your current speeds and services when browsing your favorite sites, imply prioritize and manage your network speeds with a preference for the sites that you use most frequently or which are most important to you.

For example, if you are working from home, you may want to prioritize those sites which are necessary for your job, so they don’t suffer due to other users in your household accessing the internet for leisure purposes.
