Pokemon Go Eevee Evolution | How to get all 8 Eevee evolutions
Eevee Evolutions are a regular topic of conversation for Pokemon fans – and at long last, in Pokemon Go the conversation is no longer about when the next one will be added to the game – they’re all available! No matter who your favorite is, you can now have them on your team – and on this page, we talk about how to evolve Eevee in Pokemon Go.
Eevee is one of the coolest Pokemon. It’s one of the cutest of the original Red/Blue/Green generation of Pokemon games, yes, and it’s just been promoted to starter status for Pokemon Let’s Go – but the coolest thing about Eevee is how it evolves. Eevee can evolve into more different Pokemon than any other species discovered so far – and of course that carries over to Pokemon Go.
From the newest Eeveelution, Fairy-type Sylveon, to the original elemental three, Jolteon, Flareon and Vaporeon, there are guaranteed ways to get each and every evolution – here’s what to do.

Eevee Evolutions in Pokemon Go: Sylveon, Glaceon, Leafeon, Umbreon, Espeon, Vaporeon, Flareon and Jolteon
Eevee Evolution is meant to be a random process in Pokemon Go. Once you press evolve on an Eevee, you have a random chance of getting one of the original three eeveelutions. The others can be obtained through other means, all of which require a bit of effort. There’s also some useful shortcuts and cheats of a sort to get around the random factor. We’ll detail all of that below.
There’s seven Eevee Evolutions in the game so far. Vaporeon, Jolteon and Flareon from generation 1 are completely down to random chance. Umbreon and Espeon from generation 2 and Leafeon and Glaceon from generation 3 are obtained in specific ways. The final Eevee Evolution is Sylveon, from generation 6, and it was finally added to the game in May 2021.
So, which Eevee Evolution do you want? You’ll want to carefully consider this – each evolved form of Eevee is a different type, so you’ll want to consider strengths and weaknesses with our Pokemon Go Type Chart, at least. Plus which you think is cutest.
How to evolve using Nicknames to guarantee your choice of Eevee Evolution
If you evolve an Eevee ‘raw’ by spending 25 candy, it’ll just evolve into one of the different available evolutions at random. However, you can actually force a specific evolution by renaming your Eevee of choice to a special nickname – and the whole thing began as an easter egg nod to a classic set of Eevee evolutions found in the Pokemon anime TV show.
So, basically, all you have to do is rename your Eevee to a specific name and then evolve it the regular way by spending 25 candy. Here are the names and the Eevee Evolutions:
Eevee Evolution Image Name to Evolve Type Eevee (#133) Original Form.. Normal Vaporeon (#134) Rainer Water Jolteon (#135) Sparky Electric Flareon (#136) Pyro Fire Espeon (#196) Sakura Psychic Umbreon (#197) Tamao Dark Leafeon (#470) Linnea Grass Glaceon (#471) Rea Ice Sylveon (#700) Kira Fairy
An important note about this little cheat: it only works once per Eevee Evolution. Once you’ve renamed one Eevee as Tamao to get Umbreon, for instance, you’ll only be able to get another Umbreon through ‘natural’ means – with that exact method depending on the eeveelution in question. This is why you should check your CP values and IV values before evolving an Eevee – make sure it’s a good one, as you only get one shot.

How to Evolve into Espeon and Umbreon
The first time you want to get your hands on Espeon and Umbreon, you can use the name trick detailed above. Evolve an Eeevee called Tamao to get an Umbreon, or an Eevee named Sakura to evolve it into Espeon. After that, you’ll need to evolve them the old-fashioned way, by completing certain goals.
For Espeon and Umbreon, you can also evolve into them based on their in-game method of evolution in Pokemon Gold and Silver back on the Game Boy – based on the time of day. In order to do this, you’ll first need to build a relationship with your Eevee. Set them as your buddy Pokemon and walk with them as much as you can.
Once you’ve walked 10km with that Eevee as your buddy Pokemon, it’s ready to evolve into either Epseon or Umbreon. Just evolve in the day for Espeon and night for Umbreon – and this isn’t limited, you can do it as often as you like!
How to get and use the Glacial Lure & Mossy Lure to get Glaceon and Leafeon
The final current Eeveelutions available in Pokemon Go are Glaceon and Leafeon, and this duo has the most specific evolution method yet.
First of all, don’t forget that you can do the name trick once again to get Glaceon and Leafeon for the first time. As detailed above, name your Eevee Rea to have it evolve to Glaceon, and name your Eevee Linnea to have it evolve to Leafeon. After that, however, you’ll need to fulfil special requirements to evolve more of these Pokemon.
Specifically, in order to evolve more Eevee into Glaceon or Leafeon, you’ll need some new items: the Glacial Lure and the Mossy Lure. These two new types of Lure Module are available in the shop and will soon be appearing as Field Research Rewards. These lures exist to make you more able to catch different Pokemon – the Glacial lures in Water and Ice type Pokemon, while the Mossy attracts Bug and Grass types. (As an aside, the Magnetic Lure has no impact on Eevee Evolution, but also attracts Electric, Steel and Rock Pokemon.)
There’s an added benefit to these, however: when they’re placed, they can impact Eevee Evolution. Simply place one of the lures in a Pokestop; if you place the Mossy Lure you’ll be able to evolve any Eevee you have into Leafeon while standing in that Pokestop’s radius (close enough to spin it). If you place the Glacial Lure on a Pokestop, that’s when you’ll be able to evolve into Glaceon – just remain within the Pokestop’s radius. This works even if you didn’t place the lure, too, so you can share this chance with other players.
How to Evolve Eevee into Sylveon in Pokemon Go
Pokemon Go currently has Pokemon from several generations… and the most recent Eevee Evolution added to the game is Sylveon, a Pokemon added in generation 6. In the main Pokemon games, Sylveon evolves based off your Affection and Friendship stats, which maps to the Pokemon Buddy Feature that Pokemon Go has.
First of all, the nickname trick continues to work with Sylveon. To get it first, take an Eevee and rename it to Kira – then evolve it. The first time you do this, you’ll get a Sylveon. After this, however, you’ll have to evolve into Sylveon in the traditional way, as this is a one-time trick per eeveelution.
For further chances to evolve Eevee to Sylveon, you’ll need to get 70 Buddy Hearts with an Eevee – which puts your relationship with that Pokemon at the ‘Great Buddy’ level. After this, you simply need to evolve that Eevee with 25 Eevee candy, and you’ll get the fairy-type Sylveon in return.
All of these work with the Flower Crown Eevee or Shiny Eevee – so you can use these tricks to get yourself a Shiny Sylveon or a Flower Crown Sylveon.
How to get Shiny Eevee Evolutions
Which is the best Eeveelution? Eeevee Evolutions Ranked
If you want to get your hands on a, there’s unfortunately only really one way to do it – to catch one when they spawn in the wild, or to likewise catch or otherwise get your hands on a shiny Eevee and then use one of the methods on this page to evolve it to the Eeveelution of your choice. That might mean that you want to hold off on using the name method of evolving Eevee in order to get a guaranteed shiny Eevee evolution – otherwise, you’re going to be waiting and crossing your fingers for the gods of random chance to shine on you, at least for the truly random evolution options. Good luck…
If you’ve got your hands on only one or two Eevee, you’re thus faced with a difficult choice: which of the five Eevee Evolution forms you can currently get is the best one to have? Several of the Eevee Evolutions rank decently in our list of the Best Pokemon for battles in Pokemon Go – in Attack Espeon is ranked 13th and Flareon 18th, while in Defense Umbreon clocks in at 16th. Vapoeron ranks a respectable 10th in HP and Stamina, too – but those are just basic stats. What about beyond that?
Pokemon Types are of course absolutely vital in Pokemon Go, and an important thing to consider is how each Eevee Evolution ranks when compared to other Pokemon of its type – and also how easy they are to obtain compared to their powerful peers. Let’s take a look at that:
Flareon isn’t as powerful as Moltres or Entei, but those two are legendary Pokemon that can’t be found, caught or powered up as easily. It’s still definitely the best non-legendary fire Pokemon option in the game, all things considered.

It outclasses the likes of Weavile and Jynx with ease.
The story behind Pokemon Go’s Eevee Evolution names
If you’re wondering where the above names come from, they’re actually a deep-cut nod to fans of the Pokemon anime – a nice little easter egg for players who have been particularly dedicated in their following of the series.
Rainer, Sparky, Pyro, Sakura and Tamao are actually the names of the ‘Eevee brothers’ that appear in the Pokemon anime. The first three Eevee evolutions and their owners – all siblings – show up in episode 40 of the show, meeting Ash and Pikachu. Each brother has a unique Eevee of his own, and it’s after the brothers that the Eevee take their names.
Sakura later has an Espeon of her own later on in the series – thus that nickname – and Tamao, one of the five Kimono sisters, uses an Esepon.
For Glaceon and Leafeon, the names Linnea (Leafeon) and Rea (Glaceon) are taken from NPCs that use those eeveelutions in the Eevium Z quest of Pokemon Sun & Moon. That’s all the names explained!
Eevee evolutions: how to evolve Eevee in Pokémon Sword and Shield, Pokémon GO
An age-old problem for Pokémon players since the very first games has been how to choose between the multiple Eevee evolutions. Back then, of course, there were only three choices, but nowadays you have to choose between eight different Pokémon, known as Eeveelutions.
Finding an Eevee is easier in the modern games than in the original Red and Blue, but knowing how to evolve Eevee is another question altogether – and the answer is slightly more complicated than you might think. You see, Eevee doesn’t evolve like most Pokémon simply through levelling up and each of the Eevee evolutions have a unique way to obtain them. Depending on the Pokémon you want Eevee to evolve into, you’ll have to try a different tactic.
To make things even more complicated, the rules for how to evolve Eevee in Pokémon GO are completely different. But we’ll get to that later, after we’ve covered the eight different ways to evolve Eevee in Pokémon Sword and Shield. Whether you want to use Jolteon in Pokémon Sword and Shield ranked, Umbreon in Pokémon GO ranked, or just a Sylveon to join you on your travels, we’ve got you covered.
We’re here to help you choose which Eeveelution you want and help you get it! Don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as it sounds.
Eevee evolutions: how to evolve Eevee in Pokémon Sword and Shield
You’ve got a choice of eight potential Eevee evolutions in the modern games, each representing a different type. You’ll need one of each to complete your Pokedex, so the first thing you’ll have to do is catch enough Eevee!
Where to catch Eevee in Pokémon Sword and Shield
In Pokémon Sword and Shield, you can find Eevee on Route 4. After you exit Galar Mine, you’ll come across some rolling fields that lead to Turffield. Eevee will appear randomly in the tall grass in this area.
Alternatively, head to the Wild Area and take part in some Max Raid Battles to get your hands on an Eevee. Jumping into battles in Bridge Field, East Lake Axewell, Motostoke Riverbank, or Rolling Fields could land you an Eevee. Defeat the powerful Dynamax Eevee using Fighting-type Pokémon (more on this in our Pokémon type chart guide) and then throw your best ball to capture it. We find Dusk Balls or Ultra Balls work best on Dynamax Pokémon.
How to evolve Eevee in Pokémon Sword and Shield
Now, you’ve got the chance to evolve your new Eevee. Here are all of Eevee’s evolutions, their types, and how to evolve them.
Jolteon
Evolve Eevee into Jolteon, the electric-type Pokémon, using a Thunder Stone. To use it, open your item bag and navigate to the Other Items pocket. Select the Thunder Stone, press ‘use this item’, and select Eevee from your Pokémon. Confirm you want to use the item, and let the evolution commence.
You can find a Thunder Stone at the highest point of North Lake Miloch, overlooking the water. It will look like a Poké Ball on the ground.
Vaporeon
Evolve Eevee into Vaporeon, the water-type Pokémon, using a Water Stone. Follow the same steps to use it as you would with Jolteon.
You can find a Water Stone in the most western part of Bridge Field. Navigate to the Nursery (or take a Corviknight Taxi if you’re able) and head directly away from it. Keep the large bridge on your right-hand side and head towards the cliffs in front of you. Travel through the long grass to what appears to be a dead end, and pick up the Water Stone right in the corner. It will look like a Poké Ball on the ground.
Flareon
Evolve Eevee into Flareon, the fire-type Pokémon, using a Fire Stone. Follow the same steps to use it as you would with Jolteon.
You can find a Fire Stone in Motostoke Riverbank. After crossing the bridge from North Lake Miloch, take an immediate left before you hit the Snorlax. Keep between the two patches of grass and you’ll see the Fire Stone ahead of you, between some large pipes and the red brick wall. It will look like a Poké Ball on the ground. You can also find one at the northernmost spot in Potbottom Desert if you have the Isle of Armor DLC.
Espeon
Evolve Eevee into Espeon, the psychic-type Pokémon, by levelling up during the day when Eevee has reached 160 happiness. Happiness is a hidden statistic in Pokémon Sword and Shield based on how much your Pokémon likes you. Putting Eevee at the front of your party, battling with them, and never letting them faint will gradually increase their happiness, but there are other ways to manipulate the stat.
If you’re still looking for your Eevee, try to catch it in a Luxury Ball or Friend Ball to increase its base happiness. If not, don’t worry, give your Eevee a Soothe Bell to hold as this will gradually increase its happiness as you go about your normal actions. Next, you can try making Eevee some curries in Pokémon Camp, or feed it certain berries. The berries you’ll want are: Pomeg Berry, Kelpsy Berry, Qualot Berry, Grepa Berry, Hondew Berry, and Tamato Berry. Be careful, as these will slightly lower Eevee’s stats – but if you use them as soon as you catch it, there will be no adverse effects.
You can check on Eevee’s friendship by talking to the boy opposite the first Pokemon Center in Hammerlocke. If he says any of the following things, your Eevee is friendly enough to evolve:
“You two get along great! Together is always better—am I right?”
“You two are almost best friends! I can see you really care about each other!”
“Oh wow, you’re best buddies! I can tell you’re so happy to be together!”
Make sure to level Eevee up in the daytime to get Espeon – and visit the Move Deleter in any Pokemon Center to forget any Fairy-type moves before levelling up or you’ll find yourself with a Sylveon!
Umbreon
Evolve Eevee into Umbreon, the dark-type Pokémon, by levelling up during the night when Eevee has reached 160 happiness. See Espeon’s entry for full details of how to increase Eevee’s happiness.
Make sure to level Eevee up in the nighttime to get Umbreon – and visit the Move Deleter in any Pokemon Center to forget any Fairy-type moves before levelling up or you’ll find yourself with a Sylveon!
Leafeon
Evolve Eevee into Leafeon, the grass-type Pokémon, using a Leaf Stone. Follow the same steps to use it as you would with Jolteon.
You can find a Leaf Stone in Turffield. Start at the Pokémon Center and head left towards the huge chalk artwork of Gigantamax Toxitricty on the eastern side of the city. Just before you arrive at the neolithic hillside art, turn left and left again (going back on yourself) into a tiny cul-de-sac. There should be a sparkling item on the floor – your Leaf Stone.
Glaceon
Evolve Eevee into Glaceon, the ice-type Pokémon, using an Ice Stone. Follow the same steps to use it as you would with Jolteon.
You can find an Ice Stone on Route 9. Head south from Circhester onto Route 9, and follow the road until you come to some water. Hop on your bike and follow the water to the right – watch out for the Grapploct that will try to pounce on you. Keep your eyes peeled for a sparkling item in the water to your left – this is your Ice Stone.
Sylveon
Evolve Eevee into Sylveon, the fairy-type Pokémon, by levelling up with a fairy-type move when Eevee has reached 160 happiness. See Espeon’s entry for full details of how to increase Eevee’s happiness.
You can teach Eevee TM29 Charm if you have it, or level them up to Level 15 when they’ll learn Baby-Doll Eyes. If you accidentally overwrote or deleted Baby-Doll Eyes, head to the Move Relearner at any Pokemon Center to teach Eevee the fairy move again.
One final tip for getting those evolution stones: you can also find any of them at the foot of the standing stones in the Lake of Outrage. Here, they’ll look like glittering items on the ground, and respawn every 24 hours. There’s no guarantee of which stones you’ll find, so keep checking back until you find the one you’re after.
You can also receive evolution stones from the Digging Duo – head to see the brothers near the Nursery in Bridge Field. Pay either of them 500 watts to dig up some items for you, and you might be rewarded with an evolution stone.
Eevee evolutions: how to evolve Eevee in Pokémon GO
There are completely different rules for evolving Eevee in Pokémon GO. First, you’ll need an Eevee and 25 candy to evolve it. But before you press evolve, make sure you know which evolution you want Eevee to evolve into.

However, there is one handy trick for each Eevee evolution: using specific nicknames. If you use one of the following nicknames, your Eevee will be guaranteed to evolve into the corresponding Pokémon. However, this is a one-time only trick for each nickname, so be sure to save it for your best or most-loved Eevee.
Jolteon – Sparky
Vaporeon – Rainer
Flareon – Pyro
Espeon – Sakura
Umbreon – Tamao
Leafeon – Linnea
Glaceon – Rea
Sylveon – Kira
However, if you’ve used the nickname trick already – or you’re saving it for a shiny or something special – there are some other ways to guarantee which Pokémon Eevee will evolve into.
For Espeon and Umbreon, set Eevee as your buddy and walk 10km. You need to have earned two candies while doing this, so it’s easiest to do it all at once, but can be completed in two separate 5km bursts. Then, with Eevee still as your buddy, evolve during the day to guarantee Espeon or during the night to get Umbreon.
Similarly, you can guarantee to evolve Eevee into either Leafeon or Glaceon using special Lures. If you spot a Pokéstop with a Grassy Lure – or put one there yourself – spin the stop and stay in range, and Eevee will evolve into Leafeon. The same goes for Glaceon with a Glacial Lure. You’ll notice that the shadow next to the ‘evolve’ button on Eevee turns from a question mark signifying a random evolution, to a silhouette of Leafeon or Glaceon.
The final eeveelution to come to Pokémon GO, Sylveon, arrived on May 25, 2021. To evolve Eevee into Sylveon, you need to set it as your buddy and earn 70 hearts – enough to get to Great Buddies.
Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee Eevee’s evolution into Jolteon, Vaporeon, or Flareon other than the one-time nicknaming method. You’ll just have to keep your fingers crossed and hit that ‘evolve’ button.
Getting to Level 42 in Pokémon GO
Since increasing the level cap to 50, each level after 40 has certain requirements in addition to the mountains of exp required to level up each time around. This is relevant, we promise…
To get from level 41 to level 42, one of your tasks is to evolve Eevee into all of its evolutions. There are only seven sections to this challenge as Sylveon wasn’t available when Pokémon GO Beyond (level 50) was released, but we’ll let you know whether Sylveon counts as one of the evolutions as soon as we know.
To complete the challenge, just follow the steps above to evolve Eevee seven times. Be warned: if you’ve already used the nicknaming trick on Jolteon, Vaporeon, and Flareon, it could take you a lot of tries to get all three evolutions as they are entirely random. But once you do, you’re well on your way to the big four-two.
Now you know how to evolve Eevee into all of its different evolutions in Pokémon Sword and Shield and Pokémon GO, all that’s left to do is choose which you’d like! Our vote goes to Jolteon…
