How do I check my groundwater level?

The most reliable method of obtaining the depth to the water table at any given time is to measure the water level in a shallow well with a tape. If no wells are available, surface geophysical methods can sometimes be used, depending on surface accessibility for placing electric or acoustic probes.

Is there an app to find underground water?

IGRAC has recently launched an updated version of GGMN – Groundwater Monitoring app. This app enables users to georeference and register groundwater monitoring stations and groundwater level monitoring data in the Global Groundwater Monitoring Network (GGMN) Portal.

What is the level of groundwater?

Groundwater level is a term that is used in a relatively loose way, normally referring to the level, either below ground or above ordnance datum, at which soil or rock is saturated. This is also referred to as the water table and represents the top of the saturated zone. Above the water table lies the unsaturated zone.

How deep do I have to dig to find water?

You will need to dig at least 30 feet below the surface to find high-quality water. But you’ll need to dig even deeper to find better water that will be the safest for your family to drink. The water table rises and falls throughout the year.

What is 2 inch water in Borewell?

What does this ‘2 inches’ of water mean? It is actually the free, unrestrained flow of water from a borewell over a 90 degree ‘V’ notch. Rainfall is measured in typical standard rain gauge as prescribed by the Indian Meteorological Department.

How do hydrologists locate groundwater?

As a first step in locating ground water, the hydrologist prepares a geologic map showing where the different kinds of rock come to the land surface. Some of the rocks may be so cracked and broken that they provide good openings to carry water underground.

Where is groundwater found?

Groundwater is found in two zones. The unsaturated zone, immediately below the land surface, contains water and air in the open spaces, or pores. The saturated zone, a zone in which all the pores and rock fractures are filled with water, underlies the unsaturated zone.

  3. Keep the Well Away from Animal Pens.
  4. Look for an Absence of Large Rocks.

Can coconut detect water underground?

Dowsing is a traditional way of searching underground water stream. The examples of traditional methods of dowsing are forked stick, L-shaped metal rods, coconuts, key wires, hangers, pendulum, etc. Many researchers have shown beyond a reasonable doubt that water dowsing does not work.

How do you find water for a well?

To retrieve the water, old wells used simple buckets on ropes. More modern wells use pumps that suck the water up the hole. Pumps can be driven manually by hand action, by an attached windmill, or by an electric motor. When digging a new well, you don’t have to locate an underground river.

How do I find my water table level UK?

One of the basic methods for determining water table levels is the water table test. This test consists of drilling a hole to a depth of 3 metres, allowing the water to stabilise, then measuring the distance from the groundwater to the water level.

How can I find the depth to the water table in a specific location?

The depth to the water table can change (rise or fall) depending on the time of year. During the late winter and spring when accumulated snow starts to melt and spring rainfall is plentiful, water on the surface infiltrates into the ground and the water table rises. When water-loving plants start to grow again in the spring and precipitation gives way to hot, dry summers, the water table falls because of evapotranspiration.

The most reliable method of obtaining the depth to the water table at any given time is to measure the water level in a shallow well with a tape. If no wells are available, surface geophysical methods can sometimes be used, depending on surface accessibility for placing electric or acoustic probes.

Databases containing depth-to-water measurements can also be helpful, though they don’t always have current data:

The USGS National Water Information System (NWIS) has depth-to-water measurements made in the present and the past. A convenient way to find data for your area is by using the NWIS Mapper and selecting “Groundwater Sites” in the menu on the left. Click on any red groundwater pin to access the data (need to zoom in to change the dots to pins).

The National Groundwater Monitoring Network is a compilation of groundwater monitoring wells from federal, state, and local groundwater networks across the nation. Use their Data Portal to zoom in to your area of interest and click on any site.

Your state government probably maintains a database of drillers’ logs that have water levels recorded when a well was drilled, and hydrologic consultants often have reports that contain water level data from shallow boreholes.

Consulting any or all of these sources is a good first step in finding out the depth to the water table.

The app is now available for Android devices and can be downloaded here.

Start Monitoring!

To start using the app, first you have to register at https://ggis.un-igrac.org/account/signup/ and then send us an email to: [email protected], so we can set up a virtual space within the GGMN app for you to store your wells. Afterwards you will be able to create new groundwater monitoring stations and periodically add new readings.

In addition, you could use this same account to access to the Global Groundwater Information System (GGIS) platform as well.

MyWell

The GGMN App was inspired by MyWell, which is a smartphone and SMS app developed in the framework of the MARVI (Managed Aquifer Recharge and Sustaining Groundwater Use through Village-level Intervention) project funded by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR). In the MARVI, MyWell assists ‘groundwater informed’ volunteers, or Bhujal Jankaars (BJs) in the monitoring of groundwater levels, rainfall, checkdam water level and water quality in rural communities in India. More information about MyWell and MARVI in: http://www.marvi.org.in/home.
