5 Tips from a Psychologist on Finding Peace In Chaos (When It Feels Like The World Is Falling Apart) — Exploring Therapy
Global pandemics, social injustice, the climate crisis, and now, terrorists attacking The Capitol? I know it can feel like the world is getting worse and worse each day. Finding peace in chaos seems like a challenge we must face far too often.
When dystopian nightmares become today’s actual news, and you find yourself facing the unimaginable, how do you deal with all the bad in the world and even begin to manage your wellbeing?
How can you find peace in chaos, contempt, antagonism, and violence?
Finding peace may sound daunting right now because it is. It’s vital to remember that peace within yourself is still possible in tough times like these.
Here are some ways to help you protect your wellbeing when you feel like the world is crumbling.
1. Look for stabilizing forces.
If you’re in the midst of a stormy sea, clinging to what is solid can help you stay sane. Seeking out sources of stability and comfort is a way to help you foster peace within yourself.
Stability can be found in the most mundane of comforts – re-watching your favorite TV series or puppy videos, for example, or baking your favorite chocolate chip cookies, or having a phone call with Grandma.
5 Ways to Bring Peace and Calm to Your World When It Is in Chaos
Life is unpredictable. Our endless responsibilities, goals and relationships can become significant stressors if not adequately handled. Even when we seem to have our lives under control, we can still experience hectic moments.
Chaos isn’t a strange phenomenon to anyone. It can occur when things aren’t going according to your plans. During these times, it’s common to feel as if you’ve lost control of your life.
Fortunately, there are things you can do to maintain peace amid life’s storms. Here are 5 ways to bring peace and calm to your world when it is in chaos.
1. Focus on Progress – Not Perfection
Achieving your personal and professional goals is an important part of life. While pursuing your goals, try to enjoy the process. Learn to derive pleasure from the little things, small wins and the relationships that you build along the way.
Your life doesn’t have to be perfect in order for you to be happy. Understand that you can experience peace, even while you’re taking steps to straighten out the chaos in your life.
Acknowledge your progress by:
Keeping track of your victories.
Practicing gratitude for small wins.
Taking short breaks throughout the process.
Being kind to yourself when you experience setbacks.
2. Maintain a Good Attitude
In many instances, your attitude determines your experiences. Maintaining a positive attitude is the key to a good life regardless of your circumstances. The secret to staying calm is managing your emotions and how you react to different situations.
Decide to have a positive attitude and channel good energy into the right things. That way, your days will be filled with tranquility and peace. If not, you will remain in the same rabbit hole of chaos as the days go on.
3. Implement a Daily Plan
It’s common to feel more peaceful when you have a certain level of order in your life. That’s why you should implement a daily plan. You must be intentional if you want to reduce the amount of chaos in your life.
Work on goals that reflect your values and what you really want from life, not those that someone else has set for you. Whether it’s work, family or health, set personal goals that resonate with you. Do something each day that pushes you towards achieving them.
4. Just Say ‘No’
You don’t have to agree to every request from friends, family members and colleagues. It’s easy to get caught up in the needs of others. However, you should take time to contemplate each request before you get involved.
Don’t feel pressured to say ‘yes’ all the time. Agreeing to something that you don’t want to do can cause stress and contribute to chaos. This may cause you to neglect your personal needs.
Questions to consider before you agree to a request:
How much time does it require?
Do you have the energy and resources to complete the task?
Does fulfilling the request align with your mission?
Do you really want to do it?
Is there another person who is better equipped to handle the task?
5. Get Moving
Exercising can have a positive impact on your emotional state. It can help you manage stress and anxiety. Instead of getting hung up on challenging situations, participate in exercise to get your mind off the noise and chaos. Activities such as yoga, meditation, CrossFit and swimming can help you remain calm throughout the day.
Building resistance to chaos and life’s stressors can be challenging. It takes determination and consistency to look past life’s irregularities to find peace and calm.

Find Your Peace in the Midst of Chaos
Have you ever been in stuck in traffic on a busy street and felt like it was just too much or caught up in an argument that was going nowhere? Ed and Deb Shapiro reveal how to focus on finding peace when the small stuff keeps getting in your way.
A great meditation teacher once said there should be no difference between meditating in a cave or in the center of a city, because peace is inside us and is not dependent on external circumstances. Although this is undoubtedly true, it is definitely put to the test when your life is full of chaos or anger.Being in touch with your inner peace is not the same as being happy. When difficult or painful things happen, such as the loss of a loved one, you will not feel happy, that’s for sure. But it doesn’t mean you have to lose your peace. Beneath the tears and grief, there can remain a steadiness—an inner stillness—independent of the circumstances.Maintaining that peace, especially when confronted with difficult situations, means being able to let go all the time, constantly, in every moment. You might say, “Don’t even pick it up,” for as soon as you begin to hold on, whether to resentment, irritation, hurt or anger, you create suffering for yourself. Your mind gets caught up in the emotion and you lose your balance. Letting go does not deny your feelings. You can feel all sorts of things, including sadness, joy, anxiety or laughter. The difference is you’re not holding onto these feelings. They come, and then they pass. Like birds in the sky of your mind, let them fly away. One of the greatest spiritual teachings is the awareness that all things are impermanent, that all things come and go, that you cannot cling to anything—not even pleasure—without also creating suffering. As you integrate the truth of this teaching, it’s wonderfully liberating, for it brings you back into the present moment. If everything is so impermanent, including yourself and your feelings, then there is no purpose in holding on and trying to make those feelings last longer. Rather, there is far greater joy in releasing them and reconnecting to sanity and peace.Chaos is natural—if you look at the world, it’s everywhere—but to find your peace in the midst of chaos is something you have to deal with. Life is unpredictable and will bring about many different emotions and mind states that can be challenging and difficult, even unbearable at times. But beneath all the dramas, distractions and problems, there is a still and calm place you can rest in.If, amidst the turmoil, you can find just one moment of peace in each day, then your whole life will become more joyful. Like the water in a lake, when your mind is calm, you can see the depths below; but when your mind is disturbed, it is easy to get caught up in the waves. Through meditation, you can become more aware of when emotions arise so you can take some time to chill out before they take over.
