My PC3’s sustain pedal is no longer functioning. How can I correct that?

Answer:

Probably a simple fix.

First, power off your unit and verify that the pedal you are attempting to use is plugged into the jack marked “Switch Pedal 1” (Sustain) and NOT into “CC Pedal1”. Once this is verified, turn the unit on. Do NOT step on the pedal while it boots up.

Try the pedal again. If things are still not operational, next go into the MIDI XMIT page. Press MIDI, then [XMIT ].

Verify that the ControlSetup parameter (top of the screen) is set to “126 Internal Voices”. This item is the very thing that determines what all of your sliders, pedals, buttons, wheels, etc. do while outside of Setup mode.

If changing the ControlSetup back to 126 does not help (or if it is already on 126) then next try doing a Hard Reset (press MASTER/Page2/Reset). This will clear all the user RAM and put the machine back to factory defaults so be sure to back up any custom data to before proceeding. At that point, any settings changed on the unit will be back to “new” condition.

Short of something being physically broken, you should now have sustain functionality back. If not, the next test would be to borrow/purchase another switch type pedal as a comparison. Pedals fail far more often than jacks do. If a second, known-working pedal also fails to operate, following the above guidelines, then the unit may have a problem and will need service to rectify it.

If a sustain pedal plugged into a Yamaha keyboard is producing the opposite effect – sustaining when the pedal is not depressed, and not sustaining when it is depressed – it’s usually because (a) the pedal was plugged in while the keyboard was turned on, or (b) the pedal was depressed while the unit was powering on. This tricks the keyboard into thinking the default state of the pedal is depressed, resulting in a reverse polarity or reverse function. A sustain pedal or sustaining pedal (also called damper pedal, loud pedal, or open pedal[1]) is the most commonly used pedal in a modern piano. It is typically the rightmost of two or three pedals. A device similar to the sustain pedal in effect was invented by the piano pioneer Gottfried Silbermann; it was operated by the player’s hands rather than a pedal. A later builder, Johann Andreas Stein, may have been the first to allow the player to lift the dampers while still playing; his device was controlled by a knee lever.

Until the onset of the Romantic era in music, the sustain pedal was considered a special effect, used only in particular circumstances. Only with the Romantics did a fairly constant use of the pedal come to be regarded as an essential element of piano sound.

Appropriate use of the pedal is often left to the musician’s discretion, but composers and music editors also use pedal marks to notate it. A common symbol for this is a horizontal line below the grand staff, which lifts up and down with the pedal. An alternative (and older) notation is the use of indicating where the sustain pedal should be depressed, and an asterisk showing where it should be lifted (see Für Elise for a famous example). Occasionally there is a general direction at the start of a movement instructing that the sustain pedal be applied continuously throughout. This may be marked with senza sordini (“without dampers”), or similar wording.

In General MIDI, the sustain pedal information is controlled by Control Change number 64 (CC 64).[2]

The sostenuto pedal is a similar device that sustains only notes that are depressed at the time the pedal is depressed. It is the usual middle of three pedals; but in some upright pianos the middle pedal instead lowers a veil of felt between the hammers and the strings to function as a mute.

For mechanical pianos it is possible to press down the sustain pedal only partially such that the dampers just touch the strings very slightly. This technique for the advanced pianist is called half pedaling and allows a fine variation of the sound. It can be observed that with half pedaling the damping is more effective for the higher tones.
